Tushar Jani awarded Late P.K. Srivastava Memorial Award by AMTOI
MUMBAI: Shri Tushar Jani was recently awarded Late Shri P.K. Srivastava Memorial Award (Ex-CMD of Shipping Corporation of India) by Association of Multimodal Transport Operators of India (AMTOI) for his immense contribution to the Logistics industry over last several decades.
In his speech, he said "Now is the time for all the entrepreneurs in logistics industry to come together and collectively build infrastructure to counter the might of giant Shipping Lines and Airlines.”
“All the Shipping Lines, all Airlines, have made huge sizable profits during the last few years. For whatever reason, business cycle has led to a massive, big wealth. And their ambitions are going beyond sea level and they're exapanding into all areas like ground operations and even railways".

Cochin Shipyard has orders for 65 vessels worth Rs. 22,000 crore, eyes green ships
COCHIN: India's leading shipbuilder Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) is focusing on building modern vessels powered by green energy, as it looks to deliver 65 ships worth over Rs. 22,000 crore from global and domestic clients, including the India Navy, its Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S. Nair said. The move comes amid global concerns over carbon emissions that exacerbate climate change, with the focus now gradually shifting to building 'green ships' - vessels that run on less-polluting fuels such as methanol, electricity, green hydrogen and hybrid batteries. “CSL has an all-time high order book of around Rs. 22,000 crore, involving building 65 ships, with bulk of the orders for making 14 Naval ships and 22 coastal ships for the European clients including those from Germany, Norway, Cyprus and the Netherlands. Apart from these, we have our focus on making green ships and are already fulfilling orders from abroad for hydrogen fuel cell and methanol ships, electric ships, hybrid ships and other sophisticated ships - commissioning, support and operations vessels (CSOV) for a British and GermanCyprus clients,” Nair said.
Piyush Goyal announces new overseas ofces to assist global investors
SINGAPORE : Union Commerce and Industry Minister
Shri Piyush Goyal announced plans to establish offices in various countries to support global investors seeking opportunities in India. This initiative aims to streamline the investment process and enhance India’s attractiveness as a destination for global capital.
Inauguration of the Invest India Singapore Ofce
The first of these offices, under the auspices of Invest India the national agency dedicated to promoting investment was inaugurated by Goyal in Singapore This office will serve as a dedicated contact point for companies in the region looking to invest in India, thereby fostering collaboration across various sectors.
The establishment of the Singapore office is a testament to India’s commitment to strengthening investment partnerships and simplifying the engagement process for global investors.
According to a statement from the Commerce and Industry Ministry, “The Singapore office will act as a dedicated point of contact for companies from the region looking to invest in India.”
Importance of the Singapore Ofce
The Singapore office also includes the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Ltd, highlighting the strategic economic initiatives that are being undertaken.
Goyal emphasized that Singapore is a vital partner for India and that this office represents a new chapter in enhancing economic cooperation, not only with Singapore but also with the broader ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) region.
New Expansion Plans
Minister Goyal stated, “We plan to open more overseas Invest India offices in the coming months with the aim to provide global investors seamless access to India’s dynamic and growing economy.”
The opening of the Singapore office is particularly significant, as India received the highest foreign direct
investment (FDI) from Singapore in the fiscal year 2023-24, attracting USD 11.77 billion.
Since 2018-19, Singapore has been the largest source of FDI for India, surpassing previous leaders like Mauritius, which dominated in 2017-18. Other major sources of FDI include the US, UK, UAE, Cayman Islands, Germany, and Cyprus.
Emphasizing Industrial Growth
During the inauguration, Goyal highlighted India’s ambitious plans for industrial growth, mentioning key sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing and shipbuilding.
He noted that investments are flowing into India due to its robust economic framework, and the Invest India office will serve as a one-stop solution for businesses looking to engage with the Indian market.

Deendayal Port Authority to oat tender to build three oil jetties on PPP mode
GANDHIDHAM : Deendayal Port Authority, the stateowned entity that runs the port located at Kandla in Gujarat, will soon float tender to build three new oil jetties on public-private-partnership (PPP) mode with an investment of Rs 632 crores to boost the port’s liquid cargo handling capacity, a top official has said.
“We have received approval from the Government to build three oil jetties 9, 10 and 11 on PPP mode,” Shri Nandeesh Shukla, Deputy Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, said in an interview “We will shortly be floating a tender for building the new jetties,” he said.
The location of the oil jetties is in front of the area earmarked for developing green hydrogen plants.
“We are hopeful that one or the other of the green hydrogen contenders might like to take these three oil jetties for future bunkering of green fuels This is just our hope and not based on assurance from anybody But I foresee this It is logical, it makes a lot of sense for them They are putting investments which are upwards of Rs1 lakh crores to Rs2 lakh crores in building green hydrogen plants. So, it makes sense for them to spend some Rs200croresandmakeajetty,”Shuklaadded
In August, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways approved Deendayal Port Authority’s proposal to develop oil jetties 9, l0 and 11 to handle all types of liquid cargo at Old Kandla on BOT (PPP) basis with an estimated project cost of Rs632 crore. The project is expected to add significant liquid cargo handling capacity in India.
Deendayal Port has seven oil jetties, of which five are operated by the port authority itself and one each by Indian Oil Corporation and IFFCO Work on the Oil Jetty 8 is expected to be completed soon, taking the combined capacity of the oil jetties at the western coast port to 16.32 million tonnes (mt)
and 23.49 mt by FY35. This translates into a demand supply gap of 2.45 mt by FY25 and 16.91 mt by FY35 when the liquid cargo traffic is projected to reach 40.4 mt. To cater to the rising demand, the port authority proposes to develop three more oil/liquid jetties, each with a capacity to handle 3.2 mt of liquid cargo other than crude oil, with private funds.
“Constructing oil jetties with private funds is one of the most lucrative proposals to go on a PPP basis,” a port official said.
“Generally, oil jetties have not been developed on PPP basis. Ports like to operate oil jetties on their own. This is an important decision by us to offer three oil/liquid jetties on PPP basis and that too at a time when there is great interest in Deendayal Port by green hydrogen and green ammonia companies. In view of the green hydrogen and green ammonia plants being envisaged, there would be additional demand for liquid jetties at Deendayal Port,” the official said.
Deendayal Port Authority is developing oil jetty 8 at Old Kandla at a revised cost of Rs225.85 crores, which will increase the port’s capacity to handle POL and LPG products by 3.5 mt.
The port authority reckons that the under-construction oil jetty 8 was critical for the planned oil jetties 9, 10 and 11.
“We have taken the most onerous task of constructing oil jetty 8 so that all the associated pipeline trestle etc will develop and this work is being done at a rapid pace. When oil jetty 8 comes, the bulk of the pipeline trestle, road etc will be in place along with electricity and water supply The private investor will have to build oil jetties 9, 10 and 11 and develop a short stretch of the trestle and just hook it up. So, we have taken the most difficult work upon ourselves and left all the others to our private partners,” Shukla said earlier

“I think the time has come for us not only to be co - operative but to be "corporative". We have to build our own infrastructure together, to fight this might. Even Prime Minister is talking about how supply chains are critical for country's economic growth. We have seen what happened with the Red Sea and with Ukraine War If India has to prosper, we must control our own supply chains. So we have to build self reliance in areas whether Shipping, Container Transportation, Ports, Container Yards sense of reliance on our own self. Some of us are buying ships and some investing into the port terminals. What if we can do it together? Because if we don't, either you close down or get acquired.” said Shri Tushar Jani.

NLP drives India’s efforts to improve logistics efficiency
NEW DELHI: India is marking two years of the launch of the National Logistics Policy (NLP) in 2024 with improvements in key indicators, and the economy has indeed seen positive impacts of the policy measures as part of the programme.
The targets of the NLP are to: (i) reduce cost of logistics in India; (ii) improve the Logistics Performance Index ranking –endeavour is to be among top 25 countries by 2030, and (iii) create data driven decision support mechanism for an efficient logistics ecosystem.
Unlike earlier estimates that logistics costs are high in India, it has mostly been in high single digits for more than a decade, according to an estimate by National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). The logistics cost has been estimated to be around 8.9 percent of GDP in 2021-22 by NCAER.
India’s performance on the Logistics Performance Index (LP), developed by World Bank, has improved to 38 out of 139 countries, up from 44th in 2018 and 54th in 2014, thanks to focus on developing infrastructure across the country.
“An inter-ministerial team has been formed to improve performance across all six LPI parameters: customs, infrastructure, ease of arranging shipments, quality of logistics services, tracking and tracing, and timeliness,” says a written reply by Som Parkash, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, to the Lok Sabha.
Digital reforms such as Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) for ease of doing business and Logistics Data Bank which has digitised track and trace of 100 percent containerised Export Import cargo, are presently operational, the government said in the reply
“In India, logistics is a $200 billion sector with 4.6 billion tonnes of freight transported annually, 65 percent of which is by road and 27 percent of which is by rail,” writes Vishnu C. Rajan & L. R. K. Krishnan in their report titled Significance and Implications of National Logistics Policy of India published in Georgetown Journal of International Affairs.
“It is estimated that last-mile delivery – the final stage of the delivery process through which the goods reach the end consumer – costs around 40 percent of the overall logistics cost. As a result, logistics constitutes 13-14 percent of India’s GDP as opposed to 8-11 percent in most major economies. However, nearly one-third of its logistics spending results from inefficiencies in infrastructure.
Additionally, consumers, who are generally not interested in paying for transportation overheads, often pay prices that include transportation costs. Hence, saving on logistics would reduce commodity prices, making India more competitive in global markets, thereby benefiting consumers and manufacturers alike. This would fulfil the NLP’s objective to reduce transportation and logistics costs, improving market efficiency.”
Key achievements of NLP include the integration of technology for smoother freight movement, increased focus on infrastructure development, and an emphasis on skill development in the sector, says Zaiba Sarang, Co-Founder, iThink Logistics. “The policy has also promoted the standardisation of logistics processes and documentation, which has helped streamline operations and improve transparency across the board.
“NLP has played a pivotal role in improving India’s ranking on the Global Logistics Performance Index By promoting infrastructure development, technology adoption and reducing regulatory bottlenecks, the policy has contributed to greater efficiency and reliability in logistics. The policy’s focus on multimodal transportation and digital integration has directly impacted performance metrics such as customs efficiency, infrastructure quality, and shipment tracking.”
Uday Sharma, Chief Commercial Ofcer, Allcargo Gati had this to say: “The operations at Allcargo Gati align seamlessly with the National Logistics Policy (NLP) and the national regulatory framework with a strong focus on efficiency, sustainability, and, most importantly, digitalisation. A key achievement has been the enhancement of our TMS, which now provides real-time shipment tracking throughout the logistics chain. This has streamlined processes, improved service accuracy, reduced turnaround times, and elevated the
overall quality of services offered to our clients.”
The National Logistics Policy has been a boon for India in its aspiration to become a $7 trillion economy by 2030, says Nikhil Agarwal, President, CJ Darcl Logistics. “Reducing logistics cost, enhancing infrastructure and trading operations in the policy are planned to make India as a global logistics hub. In the last two years, the policy has handled fundamental issues by leveraging technology, advocating for a multi-modal transport system, and enhancing the business environment.
“This policy has been effectively implemented across diverse ministries and has provided the logistics sector with a solid foundation of structural improvements and systemic transformations. The policy has provided unprecedented business opportunities and supply chain enhancements through Government-led industrial collaboration and stakeholder coordination, which could help India actualise its dream of transforming into a developed country by 2047. The changes in policy goals towards innovation, sustainability, and improving infrastructure are gradually pushing the country towards a more competitive logistics environment.”
Tech challenges
Technology can drastically reduce friction in logistics by improving real-time visibility, optimising routes, and automating key processes, says Sarang. “AI and machine learning can predict demand and adjust inventory management while blockchain can improve the transparency and security of supply chains. Furthermore, automated sorting systems, digital warehousing solutions and GPS-enabled tracking can help streamline operations, reducing human error and delays.”
“Government support has been notably proactive, addressing industry feedback and facilitating smoother interactions with regulatory bodies Investments in infrastructure and a push towards technological adoption have further bolstered operational efficiency. These changes have not only improved service delivery but also strengthened market competitiveness. As the policy continues to evolve, ongoing collaboration and innovation will be crucial in maximizing its benefits and driving further advancements in the logistics sector.”
Is sustainability a concern?
Not really, says Sarang while adding that NLP can integrate sustainability initiatives by encouraging the adoption of green logistics practices such as electric vehicle fleets, renewable energy sources in warehouses and fuelefficient transportation systems. “By aligning NLP goals with the Government’s environmental objectives, India can work towards reducing carbon emissions while enhancing operational efficiency. Infrastructure development with a focus on sustainability could also support long-term environmental goals.”
With rising environmental concerns, our logistics strategies have evolved to reflect sustainability goals, adds Sharma “Measures such as using hybrid vehicles and implementing route optimisation not only reduce fuel consumption and emissions but also align with the NLP’s focus on green logistics, offering both environmental and economic benefits.”
Challenges ahead
Structural reforms in the logistics sector, particularly in infrastructure and customs, were long overdue in India, says Rajan and Krishnan in their report. “In this direction, the NLP facilitates rapid technology adoption and creates synergies among government ministries in developing and implementing logistics projects. The methodology proposed to achieve a balanced modal mix by harmonising roadways, railways, airways, and waterways is promising and should yield strong results.
“The policymakers should seek to match the strategies employed by the United States and China in the logistics sector. To emulate China’s infrastructure policies during the early 2000s, India’s government must continue to encourage private participation in infrastructure development and manage the operations of logistics terminals. If not acted on promptly, logistics may remain a bottleneck in the path of development, constraining the progress in both the primary and secondary sectors of India’s economy.”
Vizhinjam Port welcomes more MSC Ships ahead of October Commissioning
VIZHINJAM: More Container ships from the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), one of the world’s largest shipping firms, have begun docking at Vizhinjam Port as the port prepares for its official commissioning at the end of October.
Port authorities have confirmed that trial runs for unloading and loading containers using the newly installed cranes are under way Following the arrival of MSC’s large vessel “Claude Girardet” last week, a steady flow of ships has started arriving. Officials noted that two
vessels of different sizes can berth simultaneously at the port.
On September 19, the vessel “Tavvishi” arrived carrying around 4,000 containers, with the unloading
process nearly complete. We expect the “Tavvishi” to depart on Sunday Additionally, the smaller vessel “Eyra” has also anchored, unloading 200 containers before its return later the same day
Earlier, the MSC vessel “Eva” visited the port. On Sunday afternoon, two more ships the 364-meter-long “Rose” and the 223-meter-long “Capetown-3” are expected to dock Furthermore, MSC’s massive mothership, “Anna,” measuring 400 meters in length and 58 meters in width, is scheduled to arrive at Vizhinjam Port early on September 25.

SCI to acquire 5 New Container Ships leading others to help Exporters reducing Logistics costs
NEW DELHI : The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) will acquire five new functional container ships and other agencies involved i n e x p o r t l o g i s t i c s l i k e C o n t a i n e r Corporation (Concor) and ports will reduce their tariffs to help exporters tide over the problems of rising freight cost, shipping delays, shortage of containers, and congestion at the ports, Government sources said.
Shri Piyush Goyal, Commerce & Industry Minister held an inter-ministerial meeting here to address rising freight cost, shipping delays, shortage & non-availability of containers, and congestion at ports, leading to difficulties that exporters face. These adversely impact trade. For immediate relief to exporters CONCOR has decided to allow empty containers to be stored for a period of 90 days in the yard at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) free of cost and has also slashed the loading and handling charges significantly
The decisions were taken at an inter-ministerial meeting called by the Ministry of Commerce to address the problems being faced by exporters due to shipping-related disruptions.
On immediate basis the SCI has also announced that they will also charter additional ships to significantly increase their capacity by 9000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
Lack of enough domestic shipping capacity has meant that 90-95% of the cargo is transported by foreign shipping lines. This gives them control over access and freight rates, limiting India’s ability to manage costs and schedules, according to a report by Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). Association of exporters have been seeking setting up of an Indian shipping line to reduce dependence on foreign shipping companies.
Charges of Rs 3000 that are being levied beyond 90 days, are now reduced to Rs 1500. Further, the storage and handling rates will be reduced for containers from Rs 9000 to Rs. 2000 (for a 40 ft container) and from Rs 6000 to Rs. 1000 (for a 20 ft container) by Concor, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board, Satish Kumar announced.

Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairman of JNPA said that steps have already been taken to eliminate any congestion and bottlenecks.
“To enhance export related processes, traffic delays near and around JNPA will be minimised and simultaneous Container scanning at JNPA will be implemented for faster clearances and reduced turnaround time,” he said.
Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) will ensure that custom clearances at the ports will be expedited by simultaneous screening of two twenty feet containers, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra said.
In the meeting it was also decided to set up a multidisciplinary help desk to support exporters. The meeting was attended by officials of Ports and Shipping Ministry, Railway Board, Department of Revenue, Civil Aviation, SCI, Concor Association of exporters, representatives of shipping and logistics companies also participated in the discussions.
“I am confident that it will result in significantly bringing down the shipping cost, improve the availability of empty containers, help faster evacuation of export consignments, and significantly reduce the congestion at ports,” Goyal said. The Government will continue to regularly monitor the situation with the next review scheduled towards the end of October, he added.
