MUMBAI: The Adani Group is set to invest $3 billion to expand its global ports capacity, targeting substantial acquisitions to strengthen its position along the vital trade corridor connecting India to Europe via Central and West Asia, according to a report. The strategic move aims to capitalise on the rising demand for iron ore and coal imports, as well as the export of finished goods.
To fund this $3 billion capital expenditure, Adani Group plans to use a mix of cash, internal accruals, and debt. Additionally, proceeds from an upcoming fundraising effort may also be allocated towards acquiring new overseas ports.
The conglomerate plans to increase its overall port (container-handling) capacity from approximately 600 million metric tonnes per annum (MMT) to 800 MMT within the next two years, primarily through international acquisitions Currently, 420 MMT of this capacity is domestic.
The group aims to boost port revenues in international trade routes that are currently dominated by China. Strategic acquisitions and revenue goals
Adani Group has set its sights on acquiring at least three large ports on the coastal borders of Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. This expansion aligns with the company’s strategy to enhance its international presence and increase the contribution of its overseas ports to total revenue from the current 10 per cent to approximately 20-25 per cent over the next three years.
This plan also supports the Indian government's vision to strengthen trade ties with Europe, West Asia, and Africa. The Centre has recently signed agreements with several
G20 countries aiming to establish the India-Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor This corridor will enhance transportation and communication links between Europe and Asia via rail and shipping networks, presenting an alternative to the Suez Canal route, which has been affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Current operations and future plans
In India, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), the country’s largest private port operator, manages 15 ports and terminals. The company handled a record domestic cargo volume of 420 MMT in FY24, representing a 24 per cent year-on-year increase This volume accounts for about 25 per cent of India’s overall cargo volume of approximately 1,540 MMT, as reported in APSEZ’s regulatory filings.
APSEZ currently operates in countries such as Israel, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Tanzania, and Australia It has also signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for port-related activities in Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines
The mega port expansion plan has been under internal discussion for the past three months. Adani Ports is focusing on increasing cargo traffic in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean through strategic acquisitions and partnerships over the next 3-5 years.
With this expansion, Adani Ports aims to achieve revenues of Rs 30,000-31,000 crore in the financial year 2025. APSEZ’s consolidated revenue for FY24 grew 28 per cent year-on-year to Rs 26,711 crore, while net profit surged by 50 per cent to Rs 8,104 crore, both record highs.

NEW DELHI: India has exported more than 45,000 tonnes of onion since the ban on outbound shipments was lif ted early this month, a top government official said recently. These exports provided relief to farmers after curbs were imposed to keep domestic supplies steady ahead of general elections.
The world's biggest vegetable
exporter banned exports of the bulb last December and then extended it in March, after a rise in prices triggered by sluggish production.
"Since the ban was lifted, more than 45,000 tonnes of onions have been exported, mostly to the Middle East and Bangladesh," Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Ministry said.
To keep onion prices affordable during the election period, the government on May 4 lifted the ban but imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne.
Khare said the forecast of a good monsoon this year will ensure better sowing of kharif (summer) crops, including onion from June onwards

Among the products that have b e e n i d e n t i f i e d a r e w a s h i n g machines, air purifiers, solar glass, paper, fur niture, apparel and jewellery Some of these products are on the list identified for special attention under Make in India initiative.
Inverted duty structure is a situation where inputs and raw materials attract higher tax than the finished products In cross border trade it makes imports of finished products cheaper than raw material a n d d i s i n c e n t i v i s e s l o c a l manufacturing.
In domestic taxation like Goods and Services Tax (GST) inverted duty str ucture creates hurdles for manufacturers to claim credit for taxes paid on inputs.
“There are many commodities both on the GST side and customs side where inversion in the tax regime is still require to be corrected
We can’t have an inverted duty structure which has an impact on our competitiveness and affects our export capabilities,” an official had recently said.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has shared its list of products for addressing inverted duty structure with the Finance Ministry
T
consultation with the industry associations and export promotion councils.
In the paper industry the import duty on raw pulp is 12% and on
s 5 % . This situation leads to higher imports of finished paper and its products Total imports of paper paper board and products was $ 3 6 billion in April-February of last year while imports of pulp and waste paper was $ 1 7 billion during the same period
In washing machines basic customs duty on both parts and fully
built units is 10% and with Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) and cesses it comes to 41.1%. This takes away some of the incentive for local manufacturing.
Same situation exists in air purifiers and their parts with basic customs duty on both at 7 5% In apparel and fabrics again the customs duty is the same
Solar glass attracts 15% import duty but the local industry is facing dumping from China and Vietnam.
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has started an investigation into the dumping early this year
Some of the suggestions for
Commerce and Industry Ministry during the preparations of the interim budget but they were left untouched. They may come up again when the full budget for the year is presented by the new Government.
S I N G A P O R E : A f t e r s i x consecutive quarters of falling profits, container lines rebounded in the first quarter 2024 with rate support from geopolitical disruption. Container line earnings have been on a downward t r a j e c t o r y s i n c e t h e p e a k o f pandemic-induced rate hikes in the s e c o n d q u a r t e r o f 2 0 2 2 T h e downward spiral brought a net loss across the largest container lines in the last quarter of 2023, and earnings forecasts predicted dire losses for 2024.
Total container line profits in the first quarter 2024 rebounded, however, from a $700m loss in Q4 2023 to a $5.4bn profit in the first quarter, according to figures from the McCown Container Results Observer
The main support for container line earnings was higher rates
owing to disruption in the Red Sea and the subsequent rerouting of vessels and absorption of excess tonnage – a factor mentioned in individual earnings reports and many market updates and analyses since late 2023
“The Asia to Europe] lane represents some 25% of global container miles and the one-third increase in typical voyage distance has the effect of shrinking worldwide capacity 8%,” said McCown.
The change in global trade flows has led to congestion in some Asian ports as higher volumes and shifting patterns affect infrastructure and inland operations in certain regions.
The report noted increased volumes as a favourable influence on earnings, with a 9.2% increase onyear in the Q1 2024, the strongest
quarterly growth since the pandemic.
The market continues to look positive for container lines in the second quarter, with spot container rates up by over 30% in recent weeks as peak season approaches. Analysts have also noted a difficult contract renewal period due to market uncertainty, as current tight capacity is balanced against the potential oversupply of tonnage should the Red Sea situation ease.
L i n e s w i l l t a k e t h e i r o w n approaches to managing risk in the Red Sea, but Maersk has said it will continue to route via the Cape of Good Hope for the foreseeable future.
Looking at the year as a whole, earnings for the 12 months to March 2024 were $16 4bn, down from a $171.1bn profit for the year ending Q1 2023, said McCown.
NEW DELHI: India has signed mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) with customs authorities of seven nations and is actively pursuing negotiations for such pacts with other countries, a top official said.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs and the Federal Customs Service, Russia, this month signed the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) MRA to provide reciprocal benefits to accredited and
trusted exporters of both signatories in the clearance of goods by the customs authoritiesoftheimportingcountry.
"The CBIC and the Federal Customs Service, Russia signed the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Mutual Recognition Agreement, which is a major trade facilitation boost for Indian importers and exporters. While this is the 7th MRA that has been s i g n e d b y I n d i a n C u s t o m s , negotiations are being actively
pursued with many other Customs' administrations," CBIC Chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said in a communicationtofieldformation
The AEO programme enables Customs administration to identify safe and compliant exporters and importers and to provide them with better facilitation. AEO MRA is already in place for 7 countries, including Korea, UAE, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

P o r t m a r k e d a significant milestone in its green initiatives with the docking of the LNG-powered container carrier, MSC ROSE This 365-meter-long vessel, capable of carrying 15,500 TEUs, is the first LNG-powered ship to berth at the Vallarpadam Container Terminal. LNG, or Liquefied Natural Gas, offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality
MSC ROSE’s arrival signifies a major step towards sustainable shipping practices. LNG engines produce significantly lower carbon dioxide, sulphur oxides, and nitrogen oxides compared to conventional marine fuels, making this shift critical in combating climate change and reducing the maritime industry’s
carbon footprint. This eco-friendly transition aligns with global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and demonstrates India’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions.
The event at Kochi Port highlights India’s strategic role in global trade and its dedication to adopting greener technologies The Vallarpadam Container Terminal, operated by DP World, is now positioned to accommodate more such eco-friendly vessels, enhancing its competitive edge and sustainability credentials. This development not only benefits the environment but also boosts the port’s operational efficiency and attractiveness to global shipping lines seeking greener logistics solutions.
MSC’s decision to deploy LNGpowered ships reflects the industry’s broader trend towards sustainability, driven by stringent environmental regulations and increasing consumer
demand for green practices. The successful docking of MSC ROSE at Kochi Port sets a precedent for other ports in India and beyond to upgrade their infrastructure and embrace sustainable shipping technologies.
K o c h i Po r t ’ s a c h i e v e m e n t underscores the importance of innovation and collaboration in driving the maritime industry’s green transformation, paving the way for a more sustainable future in global trade.

Smt Nirmala Sitharaman recently opined that a policy aimed at making minerals priced at the same level across the country that existed for four decades up to 1992-93 w e a k e n e d t h e i n c e n t i v e f o r industries to be set up close to mining regions, affecting the development prospects of mineralrich eastern states.
The Minister said that the region, which once suffered due to the ‘Freight Equalisation Policy’ is now at the core of the National Democratic
Alliance (NDA) gover nment’s development strategy
“Today we say, we also said it in Parliament on the day of the vote on account, we are building a developed India by 2047 and that journey of progress will powered by all the eastern states,” said Sitharaman.
The Minister explained that the freight equalisation policy aimed to encourage factories to be built anywhere in India by subsidizing mineral transportation costs and, as a result, coal mined in Bihar cost the same in Mumbai.
This policy had disastrous effects on states of eastern India as the policy weakened incentives to set up industries close to mining regions, encouraging factories to be set up f u r t h e r a w a y a n d n e g a t i v e l y impacting these states’ economic prospects That also led to people moving out in search of employment, the Minister said.
The Minister explained that the focus on eastern part of India has been a consistent priority for the Modi government, which is captured in the interim budget for 2024-25.
DUBAI: An Indian delegation visited three major ports in the United Arab Emirates this week, including the Port of Fujairah in the Indian Ocean Region, to discuss initiating the India-UAE segment of the proposed India-Middle East-Europe E c o n o m i c C o r r i d o r ( I M E C ) , according to a report.
The visit aime d to lay the groundwork for the India-UAE segment of the IMEC, while waiting for regional stability to advance the Israel portion of the project.
India has recently signed a 10-year a g r e e m e n t t o m a n a g e I r a n’ s Chabahar Port, which is expected to enhance India’s trade relations with Central Asia and Eurasia. This agreement signifies India’s ongoing efforts to secure its strategic interests
amid the general election period.
The Indian delegation, including senior officials from the shipping and commerce ministries, Central Board of Customs, and Deendayal Port, visited Khalifa Port and Jebel Ali Port, in addition to the Port of Fujairah.
In March, the Union cabinet approved the inter-governmental framework agreement between India and the UAE to bolster the IMEC.
The agreement, signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi this year, focuses on cooperation for the development and operation of the IMEC.
It also outlines a comprehensive framework for collaboration, aiming to explore untapped potential for joint investment and development in the IMEC.
,
railroad, ship, and road transport routes, was announced in September 2023 at the G20 Summit. Leaders from India, the US, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Italy, France, Germany, and the European Commission met to finalise the corridor.
The IMEC is envisaged to rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative by connecting Asia with Europe. Along with the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor, the IMEC will serve as a vital trade corridor, b

NEW DELHI: Only a few Indian s e c t o r s e n g i n e e r i n g g o o d s , electronic goods, and drugs & p h a r m a c e u t i c a l s p r o d u c t s have seen a rise in their annual export value during FY24, a year that saw high interest rates globally curb demand and geo-political conflicts increase energy prices.
Now, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) expecting global goods and merchandise trade to recover gradually, these sectors, plus iron ore, are expected to drive exports during FY25 too.
Sectoral Rise
According to Commerce Ministry data, the export of engineering goods, which had about a 25% share in the export basket, grew by about 2.14% annually in value terms during FY24.
During the same period, the export of petroleum products and gems & jewellery, which have 18.6% and 7.6% share in the export basket, declined by 11 8% and 13 83%, respectively These sectors have the second and third largest share in the export basket.
The export of organic and inorganic chemicals, constituting about 7% of the export basket, fell by 2.78% in value terms, during FY24.
Electronic goods and drugs & p h a r m a c e u t i c a l s , t o g e t h e r contributing about 14% share in
India’s export basket, saw an annual g r o w t h o f 2 3 5 % a n d 9 7 3 % , respectively, during FY23
During FY24, India’s merchandise exports stood at $437.06 billion, down from $451 07 billion during the previous fiscal. Goods imports fell to $677 24 billion from $715 97 billion recorded during the same period.
India’s trade performance in 2024 was influenced by global events: Houthi attacks on ships on the Red Sea led to higher freight and disrupted supply chains; expensive crude oil on account of the continuing Russia-Ukraine war; US-China trade tensions leading to more expensive value chains; and the EU’s proposed Carbon Tax and Forest regulations, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said in a report.
“Going forward these sectors like electronic goods, mobile assembling, drugs and pharmaceuticals are expected to continue to do well,” said Biswajit Dhar, a professor at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University.
“However, what worries me is the threat of protectionism rising among the advanced economies These economies are following an industrial policy, and are trying to
strengthen their manufacturing base. Also, this form of protectionism doesn’t only lead to higher tariffs but also different kinds of standards like labour standards, supply chain due diligence legislature, which can impact our exports going forward,” Dhar added.
In its Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report released last month, the WTO said the volume of global merchandise trade will increase by 2 6% in 2024 and 3 3% in 2025 as economic pressures ease and incomes rise.
During 2023, global trade declined 1.2% amid geopolitical and economic turmoil, after registering a 3% growth in 2022, the WTO data showed.
In value terms, the decline in merchandise exports was more pronounced in 2023, declining 5% to $24.01 trillion, while services exports increased by 9% to $7.54 trillion during 2023, partially offsetting the decline in goods trade.
M
remained flat to top markets like North America (including the US), Europe, and West Asia North Africa (WANA) region, while falling to other regions like Asean, South Asia, North E

NEW DELHI: Five months after India started monitoring imports of major electronic hardware products, inbound shipments of personal computers (Pcs), including laptops and tablets, from China surged by 47.1 per cent to $273.6 million in March.
The month also saw a decline in the import of personal computers from Singapore by 63.9 per cent to $ 1 2 2 m i l l i o n , w h i l e i n b o u n d shipments from other marginal players, such as Hong Kong ($33.65 million) and Taiwan ($8.21 million), during the month rose 39.1 per cent and 61.3 per cent, respectively.
I n N o v e m b e r, w h e n t h e government’s online monitoring system for the import of electronic
hardware items became operational, imports from China contracted by 14 per cent, while the overall decline was 17.2 per cent. China’s share in total shipments of these items to India stood at 81.6 per cent in March. It was 77.7 per cent for FY24.
On August 3 last year, the central government announced plans to c a t e g o r i s e p r o d u c t s i n t h e information technology hardware segment, such as laptops, tablets, allin-one personal computers, ultrasmall form factor computers, and servers, under the “restricted” label.
This announcement led to a surge in the import of laptops and tablets in September (by 41.8 per cent) and October (by 29.7 per cent), amid fears
of licensing requirements. However, after the industry expressed serious concerns over the decision — which was originally aimed at reducing import dependence on China and ensuring a trusted supply chain — the g o v e r n m e n t d e f e r r e d t h e implementation until November 1.
In a further step-down, the government announced it would not restrict the import of such electronic products from any territory, while also introducing a new contactless import authorisation system. With the import monitoring system now in place, the government is able to collect data about specific products coming in from different sources.

this liquidity would facilitate development of new world class logistics assets across micro-markets”
a n n o u n c e d i t s consolidated results for the three months ended March 31, 2024.

• Average freight rate per TEU in the first quarter was $1,452, a year-over-year increase of 4%.
• Net debt of $3.11 billion as of March 31, 2024, compared to $2.31 billion as of December 31, 2023; net leverage ratio1 of 2.8x at March 31, 2024, compared to 2.2x as of December 31, 2023.
Eli Glickman, ZIM President & CEO, stated,
“We are pleased with the current positive momentum in our business. ZIM’s solid first quarter results illustrate the incremental benefits from our strategic transformation and the outstanding execution of the ZIM team worldwide, as well as a significant improvement in
global freight rates Having taken important steps to revamp our fleet and enhance our cost str ucture, which exceeded our expectations, we delivered profitable growth in Q1 2024, as ZIM generated net income of $92 million. Per our dividend policy, we declared a dividend of $0.23 per share, or $28 million, representing 30% of quarterly net income.”
Mr. Glickman added, “Given the recent improved freight rate environment currently impacting more trades, we have increased our full year 2024 guidance and today forecast full year Adjusted EBITDA between $1.15 billion and $1.55 billion and Adjusted EBIT between zero and $400 million. Looking ahead, we now expect freight rates to remain stronger for longer than initially anticipated due to a combination of continued pressure on supply and availability of equipment and a recent uptick in demand. While the rate environment during the latter part of 2024 remains unknown, we are confident in ZIM’s strategic positioning as an agile container shipping player with a competitive cost and fuel-efficient, modern fleet.”
Mr Glickman concluded, “We look forward to further implementing our differentiated strategy to create a best-in-class experience for customers and generate sustainable value for shareholders. By year’s end, we expect the delivery of the final 16 out of 46 newbuild containerships that we secured, which include 28 LNG-powered vessels. With a fleet optimally suited to the trades in which we operate, together with declining unit costs, we are well positioned to achieve our volume growth targets and deliver on our commitment to profitability over the long term.”
