MSC Gemma, designed by HudongZhonghua with their self-developed expertise, stretches an impressive 399.99metersinlength,boastingabreadth of 61.5 meters and a depth of 33.2 meters. With a staggering load capacity of 24,116 standard containers,thisvesselbelongstothe24KTEU+sizeof containerships which are the largest in the world basedontheircarryingcapacity.

Classed by DNV, the mammoth vessel has also set new benchmarks in energy efficiency and sustainability. The vessel incorporates a range of innovative features that reduce its environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency including a small bulbous bow, large diameter propellers, and energy-saving ducts. Furthermore, the giant containership is fitted with an air lubrication systemthateffectivelyminimizesdragonthehull.

The air lubrication system creates a layer of bubbles between the ship’s hull and the surrounding water, significantly reducing friction and hydrodynamic resistance. Experts estimate that this technology alone will provide energy savings of three to four percent, leading to a substantial decrease in CO2emissions.

The delivery of the sea giant follows the vessel’s completionofseatrialsatthebeginningofMay.

The sea trials encompassed a range of crucial tests, including the ALS (Automated Life-Saving) system, side thrust test, anchor test, main engine durability test, scrubber system, and unmanned cabin.

Among the key aspects evaluated during the sea trialswastheinspectionoftheshaftgenerator.

This is the third ship of the same size being built at the yard on behalf of MSC. The container shipping company has taken delivery of five 24,000 TEU-class vesselssincethebeginningofthisyear.

Namely, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has already delivered the giant 24,116 TEU MSC Tessa andMSCCelestinoMarescatoMSC. The24Kvessels delivered to MSC also include MSC Raya, MSC Irina, andMSCLoreto.

MSC’s fleet build-up efforts have paved the way for

the liner major to become the first ocean carrier to surpassastaggering5millionTEUinfleetcapacity.

The liner major has effectively doubled the size of its fleet in just eight and a half years, solidifying its position as a prominent force within the maritime sector. Namely, MSC has purchased 306 containerships with a capacity of 1.2 million TEU since August 2020. what is more, the Swiss-based containershippinggianthasthelargestorderbookbyfar intheindustrywitharound130containershipsonorder.

In January 2023 MSC placed an order for ten LNGfuelled boxships with Zhoushan Changhong, a joint venture between privately-owned Jiangsu Xin Chang Jiang Group and state-owned China International MarineContainersGroup(CIMC).

The ten 11,500 TEU vessels will have dual-fuel propulsion,enablingthevesselstorunonbothLNGand conventional fuel, and they will adopt an ammoniareadydesign.

MSC is scheduled to receive a whopping 33 neopanamax and megamax ships this year. Presumably, MSC will try to channel much of its fleet growth into new standalone loops outside of the 2M as the carrier prepares for the end of the VSA with Maerskinlate2024,accordingtoAlphaliner.

Data from the market analyst indicates that with around 127 ships with a capacity of 1.66 million TEU, MSCseemstobeonatrajectorytohit6.75millionTEU intwoyears,ifnooldertonnageisscrapped.However, Alphaliner expects MSC to shrink its smaller tonnage under 8,000 TEU and stabilize at around 6 million TEU.

MSC seems to be adamant about exploring the potential of ammonia as the fuel of the future for the shippingindustry.lastweek,thelinergiantteamedup with industry majors MAN EnergySolutions, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) for a design for the ammonia dual-fuel operation of an MSC container ship.

Under the MOU, a technical specification and the associated design documents will be developed for a variant of SDARI’s twin island 8,200 TEU container ship design for a vessel contracted to LR class by MSC.

Walmart looks to source toys, shoes, bicycles from India to boost exports

Walmart Inc. is looking to source toys, shoes and bicycles from India, as part of its endeavour to increase its exports from India to $10 billion annually by 2027.

The US-based retailer also wants to develop new suppliers in categories such as food, pharmaceuticals, consumables, health and wellness, and apparel and home textiles, a company spokespersontold.

“Walmart’s growth in sourcing from India includes expanding working with existing suppliers and helping develop new suppliers in categories such as food, pharm, consumables, health and wellness along with apparel and home textiles,” the Walmart spokesperson said. “We are also exploring opportunities in toys, shoes, and bicycles.”

In December 2020, Walmart committed to triple its exports of goods from India to $10 billion each year by 2027, providing a

significant boost to micro-, smalland medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs)here.

“The expansion in sourcing will includehelpingdevelophundredsof new suppliers in categories such as food, pharmaceuticals, consumables, health & wellness and general merchandise, along with apparel, homeware and other keyIndianexportcategories,”ithad said.

Earlier this month, Walmart Inc. President and CEO Doug McMillon reaffirmed its commitment during hisvisittoIndiaandsaidthatIndia’s unique ecosystem of suppliers will help the company in achieving its goal of exporting goods worth $10 billion from the country annuallyby2027.

Middle East ports perform strongly in latest CPPI

DUBAI: The Chinese deep-water port of Yanghshan ranked top, signaling areturntopre-eminenceforChinaafter Saudiportsledthewaylastyear.

“Looking beyond Yangshan Port, Middle East and North Africa ports performed well again this year, with three ports from the region finishing in the top five: Port of Salalah in Oman ranked 2, Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi 3 and Tanger Med ranked 4,” the report said.

“The Yangshan Deep-Water Port enjoyed the greatest year-over-year improvement in performance of the top ports in the CPPI,” said Turloch Mooney, Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

“Yangshan managed to reduce ship waiting time by a sizeable three hours per call in 2022 compared with 2021, and berth hours also improved over most call size ranges despite the challenging operating conditions in the first half of the year. Yangshan continues to build for the future with ongoing heavy investment in automation and rail connectivity.”

Theindexranks348globalcontainer ports on efficiency, measured by the elapsed time between when a ship reaches a port to its departure from the berth having completed its cargo exchange.

“The ranking is intended to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement for the benefit of key stakeholders in global trade, including government, shipping lines, port and terminal operators, shippers, logistics companies and consumers,” the report’sauthorssaid.

World Shipping Council Releases Containers Lost at Sea Report – 2023

LONDON: The World Shipping Council (WSC) has released its annual report on containers lost at sea, revealing positive developments in container safety within the international liner shipping industry. The report covers the year 2022, showing that 661 containers were lost overboardduringtheyear.

“The reduction in containers lost at sea in 2022 is positive news, but there is no time for complacency. Every container lost at sea will always be one too many and we will continue with our

efforts to make the sea a safer place to work, and to protect the environment and cargo by reducing the number of containers lost at sea,” says John Butler,President&CEOoftheWSC.

Proper packing, stowage and securing of containers, and reporting of correct weight are key to the safety of a containership,itscrew,anditscargo,to shore-based workers, and to the environment. The responsibility for container safety is shared across the supply chain, and every day liner carriers work with their partners to

prevent incidents and ensure safe containertransport.

The WSC Containers Lost at Sea Report – 2023 Update reports that in 2022, 661 containers were lost at sea. This represents less than one thousandth of 1% (0.00026%) of the 250 million containers currently shipped each year, with cargo transported valued at more than $7 trillion. Reviewing the results of the total fifteen-year period surveyed (20082022), on average 1,566 containers were lostatseaeachyear.

CBIC to introduce additional disclosures for Export-Import of medicinal products from June 1

NEW DELHI: The Customs Department is proposing to introduce additional disclosures for the export and import of medicinal products from June 1 to fast-track clearances of shipments.

These additional disclosures, once introduced, will reduce queries of Customs officials, which are frequently posed to export-import traders dealing inmedicinalplantsandchemicals.

“For the purpose of effective avoidance of queries, enhancing efficiency in assessment and facilitation,

addressingreasonsfordelaysandaiding policyformulationthroughamechanism of more complete import declarations, it has been decided to make certain additional identifiers mandatory for importsandexportsundersomespecific chapters of the Customs Tariff, with effect from June 1,” the Central Board of IndirectTaxesandCustoms(CBIC)said.

It sought stakeholders’ views on the proposed changes in import/export declarationsbyMay26.

The proposal has been brought in consultation with the Department of

Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of AYUSH and Directorate GeneralofForeignTrade(DGFT).

The information currently provided by the importers/exporters of these products is inadequate and does not provide the complete details of the product, thus, leading to insufficient inputs for devising policies, multiple queries during assessment and examinations, certifications from technical agencies etc, with a resultant delay in assessment and clearance, the CBICsaid.

Andhra CM launches Rs 5,156-crore Machilipatnam Port works

Mohan Reddy recently launched work on the Machilipatnam Port, which is estimatedtocostRs5,156croreandwill have an initial capacity to move 35 million tons of cargo. The Chief Minister unveiled a pylon and offered special prayers on the beach, marking thestartoftheworkontheport,whichis scheduled to be completed in two years, a press note shared by the State Governmentsaidrecently.

“The capacity of the 4-berth deep water port would be increased to

116 million tons as the cargo traffic increasesgradually,”Reddywasquoted assayingintherelease.

In the next 24 months, he said, people can start seeing large vessels anchoringatMachilipatnam’sport.

Followinglandacquisition,finalising tender procedures and financial closures, procuring permissions and resolving all legal hurdles allegedly created by N Chandrababu Naidu, the port is becoming a reality, theChiefMinistersaid.

According to the CM, the port will propel Machilipatnam to grow like

developed ports cities such as Mumbai and Chennai, considering it is connected with national highway number 216. He said however that railway connectivity was required to enhanceaccessibilitytotheport. Machilipatnam will become the goto place for trade and commerce as well as industrial growth, as Telangana and Chhattisgarh too will make use of this port located in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishnadistrict,anditwillsparkgrowth in ancillary industries, which would create employment for lakhs of people, Reddysaid.

Indian Coal Imports rose by 106% in 2022-23 : CEA

NEW DELHI: India’s coal import increased by 106% in 2022-23 to 55,634.8 tonnes as against 26,998 tonnes in the previous year for both public and private sector thermal plants, according to the data released by the CentralElectricityAuthority(CEA).

Imported coal is used by thermal plants across the country, either as a primary source or blended with local coal. Thus, all thermal plants owned by either the Centre or state governments blend the imported coal with the local one. There are, however, private power plantswhouseonlyimportedcoal.

“Coalimporthasincreasedinthelast

financial year as the demand for power was high and Coal India was not able to supply coal to all thermal units. The Centre has advised power generators to importcoalandblendwiththelocalcoal. Thus, many power distribution companies (discoms) imported coal,” saidaseniorCEAofficial.

ThethermalunitsundertheCentral governmentimportedatotalof19,117.80 tonnes of coal in 2022-23 as against 2407.7 tonnes in 2021-22. “The thermal units of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) were advised to blend local coal with imported coal. Earlier, it used to be 6% of the imported

coal but in the last financial year it increased to 20% as there was a big shortageoflocalcoal,”saidtheofficial.

Thermalunitsownedbystatediscoms imported a total of 6,620.20 tonnes in 2022-23 against 211.2 tonnes in 2021-22. “In the financial year 2021-22, no other discomapartfromTANGEDCOimported coal.Butin2022-23,discomsownedbythe Maharashtra government as well as othersimportedcoal,”saidtheofficial.

Private generators imported a total of 9,365.90 tonnes against 5,488.40 tonnes in 2021-22. These generators imported coal only to blend it with local coal.

The vessel is carrying cargo of 15 importers which is being discharged to 9 different tank terminals.

Govt aims to list Shipping Corp of India Land and Assets on stock exchanges by June 7

NEW DELHI: The Government is looking to list the SCI’s demerged noncore business entity, the Shipping Corporation of India Land and Assets Ltd (SCILAL), on stock exchanges by June 7, multiple officials aware of the developmentsaid.

“The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has already issued 46.5 crore shares of SCILAL to eligible shareholders on April 6, and following SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board ofIndia)approval,SCILALwillbelisted on stock exchanges,” a senior governmentofficialsaid.

Headdedthatfollowingthelistingof SCILAL the government will look to invite expressions of interest (EoI) for its63.75percentstakeinSCI.

Another official added that SCILAL willbelistedoncealltheshareholdersof SCI that have held shares of SCI since April 1, 2021, agree to take the shares of SCILAL.

“Shareholders have been given till the end of May to either keep the newlyissued shares of SCILAL or acquire

additional shares in SCI by paying a premium,”theofficialsaid.

The Government expects three to fiveplayerstobidforitsstakeinSCI.

Sourcessaidthatcompaniessuchas Vedanta, DP World, and shipping firms from Norway and South Korea have shown interest in SCI in the virtual road showsthathavebeenconducted.

Based on the current stock market price, the government would rake in overRs2,800croreforitsstakeinSCI.

The company reported net Sales of Rs 1,418.14 crore in the quarter ended March 2023 up 7.91 percent from Rs.1,314.16crorelastyear.

Its quarterly net profit came in at Rs. 359.83 crore up 175.27 percent from Rs. 130.72 crore a year ago. SCI’s EBITDA stood at Rs. 498.95 crore in the quarter ended March 2023 up 32.31 percentonyear.

SCI has a fleet strength of 70 vessels and is the largest Indian shipping company catering to the overseas and coastaltransportationofgoods.

The demerger of SCILAL was

approved by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in February this year, and the processwascompletedinMarch.

Aspartofthestrategic-saleprocess, the government has hived off the real estate assets of the SCI — Shipping House, a 19-storey building, and the Maritime Training Institute, both in Mumbai, and certain other non-core assets, to SCILAL. Per the balance sheet of SCI, the value of non-core assets meant for demerger as of March 31,2022,stoodatRs2,392crore.

SCILAL was formed in November 2021 to hold non-core assets of SCI, which falls under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. The SCI’s board of directors authorised a demergerschemeinAugustlastyear.

SCI had announced the demerger of its land and assets in a 1:1 ratio, which wascompletedonMarch31,2023.

Thus,ifaninvestorhad100sharesof SCI, he would get an equal amount of sharesofSCILAL.

InApril2022,theMinistryaskedSCI toexpeditethedemerger.

India Inc pays less for imported inputs, machinery imports keep pace

MUMBAI: Indian businesses are paying less for imported energy and otherinputslikechemicalswhilebuying more machinery from overseas sources,accordingtoofficialdata.

Thisindicatesthatthelossofpaceof merchandise imports in recent months, and the contraction since February, is mainly due to fall in prices of bulk commodities like crude oil, coal, LNG and fertilisers, rather than sluggish investmentdemandintheeconomy.

This assumption is also supported by the fact that the momentum of noncrude, non-oil imports is relatively intact. The fall in input prices may also help prop up Corporate India’s margins inthecurrentquarterandthenext.

After November 2022, year-on-year growth in imports had started to slow down, the shipments were flat in January, and by February, the contraction began. In April 2023,

importscontractedbyasharp14.06%on year as oil imports went down to $15.1 billion from $17.6 billion in the same month last year. In April 2022, crude oil price had averaged $107 a barrel while in the same month of 2023 it traded at $79abarrel.

In May 2023, decline in oil imports will be even steeper because the averagepriceofabarrelofcrudeis$75a barrel as against $115 a barrel in May lastyear.

Same is the case with coal where international prices fell sharply after January this year and are almost half the prices at the start of the year. India imports both thermal coal and coking coal that is used for steel production.

In March, coal imports contracted 26% on year to $3.4 billion and in April the contraction was even sharper at 28% on yearto$3.9billion.

Imports of organic and inorganic

chemicals were down 31.3% on year to $2.3 billion. Downward trend has been seen in chemicals from December onwardswhenimportsweredown20.43% to $2.5 billion after remaining positive in thepreviouseightmonthsof2022-23.

Despite the decline in imports seen across all key input commodities for industry, the businesses continued to keepupwiththepurchaseofmachinery. In April 2023 machinery imports were up15%onyearto$3.9billion.

Growth of imports of machinery have been around double digits for most months of 2022-23. One reason machinery imports have held up is because their prices do not fluctuate like those of other bulk commodities. Other reason is that orders for machinery are placed in advance and there is very little spot market or trading opportunities in them in normaltimes.

Taiwan’s Shipping Lines beating IMO carbon target far ahead of times

TAIPEI: Taiwan’s two largest shipping carriers have reduced their carbon emissions by 40 percent, seven years ahead of a goal set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai said onMonday.

Wang made the remarks at a side event on green marine transport at the 11th APEC Transportation Ministerial MeetinginDetroit,Michigan.

Of the world’s top 20 shipping firms, three are based in Taiwan, including Evergreen Marine Corp, Yang Ming

Marine Transport and Wan Hai Lines, Wangsaid.

Collectively, they account for more than 10 percent of global shipping capacity and are implementing measures to attain the ideals of green marinetransport,hesaid.

Yang Ming and Evergreen Marine havereducedtheircarbonemissionsby 40 percent, a goal the IMO said should beachievedby2030,hesaid.

Taiwanese shipping firms plan to procure 33 dual-fuel eco-friendly ships and46low-carbonships,andcontinueto increase the proportion of shore power

usedbytheirfleets,hesaid.

Yang Ming and Wan Hai joined the SilkAlliance,whichwaslaunchedbythe Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub to develop a “Green Corridor Cluster” beginning withintra-Asiacontainertrade,hesaid.

Wang exchanged views on the “GreenMaritimeCorridor”andelectric vehicles with US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and interacted with transportation heads fromChile,Indonesia,NewZealand,the Philippines and Thailand, the ministry said.
