MUMBAIMUMBAI:Indiahasbeenrelatively insulated from the severe headwinds intheWest. However, withathirdofthe global economy expected to slip into recession in calendar year 2023, the impact will strongly be felt on India’s exports and trade economy, leading economists said in a panel discussion at the BFSI Insight Summit held recentlyinMumbai.
An economic panel comprised offormer Reserve Bank of India executive director and former Monetary Policy Committee member Mridul Saggar, State Bank of India Chief Economic Advisor Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Citibank India Chief Economist Samiran Chakraborty, ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar, and IndusInd Bank Chief Economist Gaurav Kapoor, the topic of the panel discussion was-“No recession in sight: Is India decoupled from developedeconomies?”
“We are quite coupled with the global economy. Our combined exports and imports stood at 44.9 per cent of GDP last year.
ThisnumberisstarklyhigherthanUS or China. We are heavily integrated in terms of capital flows, trade, and financial channels. There is no way Indiacan’tbehit. However, evenifour growth slows down, it could still grow around 6 per cent next year,” Saggarsaid.
This view was echoed by his copanelists. Citi’s Chakraborty said he expects global growth in 2023 to be around 2 per cent, but if one removes China, it will be around 0.5 per cent. “The US and Europe are around 38percentofIndia’sexportsandboth these places will have negative GDP growth. That way, impact on our exports will be more magnified than what simple global GDP growth numbersmightsuggest,”hesaid.
ICRA’s Nayar said there was concernregardingtheintensityofthe export crash next year, but she was optimisticthatthedemandsentiment intheeconomywasmorepositivethat whattheRBIsurveyssaid.Nayarsaid the demand in the economy was not just the pent-up demand, and if it
sustains, the domestic economy can absorbthehitsfromlowerexports.
“There is limited degree of decoupling that we have managed to achieve. Important policy changes like inflation targeting have led to lower rupee depreciation and also lower inflation compared to the world,”saidIndusInd’sKapoor.
The International Monetary Fund in its latest World Economic Outlook has projected that a third of the global economy may slip into recession in calendar year 2023. In its October report, the IMF cut its forecast for global economic growth in calendar year 2023 by 0.2 percentage points to 2.7percent,witha25percentprobability thatitcouldfallbelow2percent.
Earlier this month, while the World Bank said India was relatively resilient compared to other major economies, it will still not be completely insulated from the spilloversfromtheUS,Euroarea, and China. For FY24, the World Bank cut India’s GDP forecast to 6.6 per cent from7percentearlier.
AMARAVATI : In what could be a big boost to the infrastructure development in the state, India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited(IIFCL)hasagreedtoextend financial support for the construction ofthreeportsinthestate.
Sources said that IIFCL had expressed its willingness to support three port projects Ramayapatnam (Nellore district), Bhavanapadu (Srikakulam district) and Machilipatnam (Krishna district). Source said that the state government and IIFCL are fine tuningthetermsandconditionsofthe financialsupport.
The IIFCL, the central government Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), recently
announced releasing nearly Rs. 8,200 crore for taking up nearly 20 port projects across the country. Three ports from AP were figured in the list of proposed funding for ports readied bytheIFFCL.
“We are expecting at least Rs.1,000croresupportfromIIFCLfor eachofthethreeprojects.Thismeans that AP’s projects alone expected to get around Rs. 2,500-3,000 crore from the total outlay spared for construction of 20 new ports in differentstates,”saidaseniorofficial.
Sources said that IIFCL set its focus on early completion of port projects in order to boost the India’s economy. Centre had directed the finance ministry to work out modalities for extending easy
financialsupporttotheinfrastructure projects in order to boost the economy.
As a result, IIFCL is reported to have readied the special package for the ports proposed by the different states. After taking the proposals of AP Maritime Board, IFFCL is reported have convinced that all the three ports projected by AP government would be a big assets in achieving big revenues once completed and hence it has included threeprojectsfromAPinthefinallist.
The state had already launched the works of Ramayapatnam port in Nellore district and set the stage ready for launching of Bhavanapadu and Machilipatnam ports very shortly.

COCHIN: The Kerala Exporters’ Forum has voiced concern over higher rates and transit time in Cochin Port, which has led to a shifting of cargo to otherports.
Taking note of the concerns of the exporters’ fraternity, the Cochin Port Authority has held several rounds of discussions with the shipping lines and the Kerala Steamer Agents’ Association.
The shipping lines, while assuring the best possible support, have agreed to discuss the freight rates with the individual shippers. They were hopeful that the rates would come down in the
comingdays,portofficialssaid.
On the transit time to the CCG countries, the representatives of the shipping lines said Cochin is connected through two direct weekly services to Jebel Ali and the transit time is five-six days. Ports of other GCC countries are generally connected from Jebel Ali in another 5-6 days. They assured special attention to time-sensitive containers, theofficialsadded.
Hameed Ali, President, KEF, said the market has been in revival postCovid. However, the exporters’ fraternity has been forced to ship its consignments from other neighbouring
ports due to the high rates prevailing in Kochi. Even after considering the transportation cost to these ports, he said the total shipping cost was higher at Kochi, besides the longer transittimecomparedtootherports.
The exporters fraternity pointed out that imports of orange and dates has been shifted to Mumbai where procedures are much easier It pointed out that banana exports can be brought toKochiifafavourabletariffisofferedin thecity.Thedelayinclearanceismainly attributed to FSSAI, forcing exporters to shift their cargo imports to Chennai orMumbai, theyadded.
NEW DELHI: Amid demands for snapping trade ties with China for its transgressions on the border, former Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya has opined that cutting tradewithBeijingatthisjuncturewould amount to sacrificing India’s potential economic growth. Instead, Panagariya suggested that India should try to enter into free trade agreements (FTA) with countries such as the UK and the EuropeanUniontoexpanditstrade.
Panagariya, currently a professor of economics at Columbia University, said both countries can play the trade sanctions game but the ability of a USD 17 trillion economy (China) to inflictinjuryonaUSD3trillioneconomy (India)isfargreaterthanthereverse.
“Now there are some who want trade sanctions on China to ‘punish’ it for its transgressions on the border… if we try to punish China, it will not sit back, as amply illustrated by its response to sanctions by even the mighty United States,” he observed. Panagariya pointed out that even a large economy such as the US has not been very successful with its sanctions eitheragainstChinaorevenRussia.
“Its close ally, EU, has had to pay a very high price of the sanctions against Russia (GDP: USD 1.8 trillion only). So, this is a very slippery slope,” he observed. The trade deficit, the difference between imports and exports, between India and China touched USD 51.5 billion during April-
October this fiscal. The deficit during 2021-22 had jumped to USD 73.31 billion as compared to 44.03 billion in 2020-21, according to the latest government data. Imports during April-October this fiscal stood at USD 60.27 billion, while exportsaggregatedatUSD8.77billion.
Explaining further, Panagariya said it so happens that for many products India imports, China is the cheapest supplier so New Delhi buys them from Beijing. It also happens that for goods India wants to export, China does not offer New Delhi the best price.
“So,wesellthemtoothertradepartners suchastheUS.Thefactthatthisresults in a trade deficit with China and trade surpluswiththeUSshouldbenoreason forworry,”Panagariyasaid.
