NAVI MUMBAI: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s best-performing Port, in association with the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, developed a Continuous Marine Water Quality Monitoring Station (CMWQMS) & launched an Electric Environmental Monitoring Vehicle (EV) on November 21, 2022, Monday, at the Port. The monitoring station and vehicle were inaugurated at the hands of Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPA, in the presence of Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Deputy Chairman, JNPA, alongwithalltheHoDsofJNPA. Speaking at the occasion, Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, JNPA, stated, “JNPA is committed to achieving leadership in sustainability and creating value for the trade – depicted acrosstheeconomic,social,andenvironmentalparameters. JNPA always thrives on being an environmentally responsible port. The Continuous Marine Water Quality Monitoring Station and launch of E- Vehicles is yet another steptowardscommitmenttosustainabledevelopment.”

The Continuous water quality system and electric monitoringvehiclewillassistinmanagingthemarinewater and air quality in the port area, regulating the environmental quality within the port area. Through this, JNPA will be able to reduce the greenhouse gas footprint of vehicles, in addition to checking compliance with Environmental Quality around the port estate through water quality stations data, such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, conductivity, nitrate, salinity, turbidity, and TDS of marine water a database on marine water quality is essential for maintaining hygienic standards in the marine environment. The E- Vehicle also substantiatestheongoingambientairandnoisemonitoring activitiesatJNPA.

JNPA has initiated various environmental upgradations and Green Port Initiatives like a Sewage Treatment Plant,

Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAAQMS), Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Facility,LEDslampsreplacedinthePortareaandtownship, E RTGCS, Shore power supply, Rejuvenation of Water Body nearShevaTempleandShevaFoothillatJNPA,Initiativefor the ease of Traffic at Centralized Parking Plaza, Port Green Cover including Mangroves Management, Oil Spill Response, etc. Jawaharlal Nehru Port has also installed Solar Panels of around 4.10 MWp. 38% of avg. Power requirement is from renewable energy, and has also switched to LED lights at the Port area to lower energy consumption&decreasecarbonfootprint.

MUMBAI:EssarPorts&Terminals Ltd (EPTL) and Essar Power Ltd (EPL) concluded the US$ 2.05 billion (Rs. 16,500 crore) sale of captive ports and power assets located in Hazira and Paradip to Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India Limited (AM/NS). The sale consistedofinfraassetswhichincludea270MWpowerplant and 25 MPTA port at Hazira, Gujarat and a 12 MPTA port at Paradip,Odisha.

Rupee trade with Russia: RBI Nod to HDFC Bank, Canara Bank

MUMBAI:Inabidtofacilitaterupee trade with Russia, the Reserve Bank of India(RBI)hasapprovedtheopeningof special vostro accounts by two more lenders, HDFC Bank and Canara Bank, according to media reports. This paves the way for cross-border trade in the Indian currency, especially between NewDelhiandMoscow.

Three other Indian banks –State Bank of India, IndusInd Bank and UCO Bank – had earlier received the necessary permissions from the regulatortorolloutrupeetrades.

In July, the central bank had

introduced a new arrangement for settling international trades in rupees. Themechanism,enablingtheinvoicing, payment and settlement of exports and imports in rupees, is aimed at promoting trade. It would also restrict dollar outflows at a time when the local unithasbeendepreciating.

At the time, SBI had said it was openingaspecialrupeevostroaccountto handleRussia-relatedtradesettlements. The state-owned lender said it is “making necessary arrangements and processing requests received from various banks, including Russian banks,

dulyfollowingRBIguidelines”.

Unexpected delays ripple across the supply chain

AMSTERDAM: According to the InternationalChamberofShipping,90% percent of world trade is carried out through ships. Since the pandemic, average global schedule reliability for container shipping is below 40%, which has had a direct effect on the global economy. While delays can’t be prevented entirely, the ability to proactively notify cargo owners of delays would enable shippers and their consignees to prepare for the “unexpected” by making alternative operationalplans.

Enabling supply chain continuity means that shippers need to be informed and in control of what’s happening to their shipments. DCSA conducted a survey of North American logistics decisionmakers in shipper organisations who

confirmed that visibility is key to deciding which carrier they will use.

Over 80% of the respondents used multiple suppliers for ocean transport and 69% reported varying satisfaction levels with different shipping suppliers.

Finmin turns down proposal to expand tax remission scheme for exporters in few segment

RoDTEP not to be extended to steel, pharma and chemicals

NEWDELHI:TheFinanceMinistry has rejected a Commerce Ministry proposal to expand the scope of the flagship tax remission scheme–RoDTEP– for exporters to include sectors that are currently out of its ambit, official sources said recently. Exporters from sectors such as steel, pharmaceuticals and chemicals are not entitled to get the benefit of the Remission of Duties and Taxes on ExportedProducts(RoDTEP)scheme.

“The Revenue Department is of the view that, given the limited resources, the request for additional RoDTEP allocation can’t be accepted. There are important areas and schemes that require larger allocations more urgently, which the Finance Ministry has to look into at this stage,” one of the sourcessaid.

Acceding to industry demand that all sectors should be provided the

RoDTEP benefit to make exports truly “zero-rated” in sync with global best practices, the Commerce Ministry had proposed the expansion of the remissionscheme.

Under this scheme, eligible exporters get refunds in the range of 0.3% to 4.3% of the freight-on-board valueoftheexportedproducts.

The Government has budgeted Rs13,699crorefortheRoDTEPscheme for the current fiscal, up 10% from the revised estimate of Rs 12,454 crore for FY22.

Exports of pharmaceuticals, chemicals and iron & steel (that are outsidetheRoDTEPambit)totalled$88 billion in the last fiscal, having recorded an over 31% jump from a year before. They accounted for almost 21% of the country’s overall merchandise exports inFY22.

Analysts have argued that sustained

and adequate remission of taxes, in addition to structural reforms, will help exportersimprovetheircompetitiveness and better equip them to boost shipments at a time when demand from keymarkets,suchastheUSandtheEU, has started to falter due to an economic slowdown there. It also remains critical to India’s efforts to scale up goods exportstothetargeted$1trillionbyFY30 from$422billioninFY22.

However, given that the steel, pharmaceutical and chemicals sectors are mostly dominated by large players, their ability to push exports without official succour remains much higher thansmallandmediumbusinesses,one oftheofficialssaid.Moreover,exportsof pharmaceuticals and chemicals have performed well in the wake of the pandemic, so these sectors don’t require urgent assistance, said the source.

India may transport Russian oil to Bangladesh

NEW DELHI : India is exploring the possibilityofemergingasatransitcountry to transport Russian oil and gas to Bangladesh after Turkey pitched in to emerge as a transit Country for such suppliestoIndia’sneighbour.

Turkey has expressed interest to emerge as a transit state for Russian energy supplies to Bangladesh but it is learntthatIndiaisexploringideastoassist in transit given its geographical location andstrongpoliticaltieswithBangladesh.

Turkey would be “more than happy” to help Bangladesh by becoming a transit country for Russian energy supplies, which Bangladesh needs to tackle fuel shortages, Turkish ambassador to Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan said recently in Dhaka. It comes as Turkey is eyeing to increase its influence in Bangladesh and India has been monitoring the trajectory of Turkey-Bangladesh ties over the past fewyears.

Energy cooperation between Bangladesh and Russia will be top priority when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visits Dhaka soon for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Council of Ministers meeting. Bangladeshhasbeeneyeingdiscounted Russian oil to meet its growing energy and power sector demands. Discounts lift Russia’s fertiliser exports, becomes top supplier to India

NEW DELHI: Russia for the first time became the biggest fertilizer supplier to India in the first half of the 2022/23 fiscal year by offering discounts over prevailing global prices, cornering more than a fifth of the market share, GovernmentandIndustrysourcessaid.

India’s fertilizer imports from Russia surged 371% to a record 2.15 million tonnes in the first six months of the year started on April 1, a senior Government official who was closely monitoring the imports, was quoted in Reutersassaying.

In value terms, India’s imports during the period spiked 765% to $1.6 billion, he said. In the last entire fiscal year India imported 1.26 million tonnes fromRussia.

“India was struggling to secure fertilizers at reasonable prices after conflict escalated between Russia and

Ukraine.

Russian supplies were timely and at reasonable prices. It helped us to avoid possiblescarcity,”theofficialsaid.

Fertilizerpricesjumpedintheworld market from March onwards after Western countries imposed sanctions on the fertilizer shipments from Russia and Belarus, key exporters, in the wake ofMoscow’sinvasionofUkraine.

Combined, Russia and Belarus accounted for more than 40% of global exports of potash last year. Russia accounted for about 22% of global exports of ammonia, 14% of the world’s urea exports and about 14% of monoammoniumphosphate(MAP)–all keykindsoffertilizers.

“It was a win-win situation for India and Russia,” said a senior industry official who negotiates with overseas suppliers on behalf of Indian buyers.

“Indiasometimesgotdiscountsofmore than $70 per tonne over global prices. Russia got a big buyer who can replace Europeanbuyers.”

In June, India secured diammonium phosphate (DAP) from Russia at $920-925 per tonne on a cost and freight basis (CFR), when other Asian buyers were paying more than $1,000,industryofficialssaid.

The surge in Russian supplies halved China’s exports to India to 1.78 milliontonnesinthefirsthalfof2022/23.

Exports from other destinations such as Jordan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates also fell. In the 2021/22 financial year Russia’s share in Indian imports was around 6%, while China cornered 24%. Russia’s market share jumpedto21%inthefirsthalfof2022/23, surpassing China as the biggest suppliertoIndia,theofficialsaid.

India’s Readymade garment exports likely to cross $30 billion by 2027 : Report

MUMBAI: Multiple incentive schemes rolled out by the Government, trade agreements with key nations and the declining share of China in the ready-made garment (RMG) market arelikelytohelpIndia’sexportsriseata CAGR (compounded annual growth rate)of12-13%andsurpass$30billionby 2027, CareEdge Ratings said in a recent report.

“This will help India to achieve an ambitioustextileexporttargetofUS$100 billion by 2030,” it said. CareEdge Ratings said that ready-made garments constituted a major share of around $500 billion in the global textile & RMG trade of around $850 billion in calendar year 2021.TheglobalRMGmarketisexpected toreacharound$650billionby2027.

The global RMG market primarily comprises the European Union (EU), the US, the UK, Japan, Canada and South Korea together accounting for nearly60%ofthetotalglobalimports.

Countries such as China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Spain and India dominate the export market, with China accounting

for a lion’s share of 33% of total RMG exports backed by high labour productivity along with economies of scale,itsaid.

“Having adequate raw material and a large labour workforce, India is well poised to grab the opportunity in the global RMG market. India has a very good presence across the cotton textile value chain from fibre to fabric, while it has a limited presence in man-made fibre,whichisexpectedtogetaboostby expected FTA with the UK and PLI scheme,“ said Krunal Modi, Associate Director–CorporateRatings.

“Furthermore, having presence across entire-value chain reduces transportation costs and lead time, thereby providing a cost-effective solution to the customers. With all these, Indian RMG exports are expected to surpass the US$ 30 billion mark by CY27. This shall translate into 4.6-4.9% share in world RMG exports as against the current share of around 3%,”headded.

India’s share in global RMG exports has remained sluggish from 2017 to

2021, with RMG exports at around $15 billion in CY21. Countries such as BangladeshandVietnamhavecaptured alargepartofChina’sdecliningsharein globalRMGexports.

“Competing nations have gained due to duty-free access to key export markets, i.e., EU, the UK and Canada apart from their higher labour productivity and economies of scale. India’s dependency on cotton-based textiles as against the high share of man-made fibres in the global RMG market also impacted its RMG exports,”thereportsaid.

“With a level-playing field due to trade agreements, India’s share in the UAE and Australian markets could rise and the free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK (likely to be completed in CY23) will be a game changer. However, challenges from competing nations such as Bangladesh and Vietnam remain as they have gained market share to some of the major export markets due to duty-free access amid China’s decline,” CareEdge Ratings said.

By adding KDP to the network of ports and offering land freight and value-added solutions to and from KDP, Maersk is implementing timeandcost-efficientsolutionsforitscustomers.

The long-term commercial agreement with Maersk falls in line with Asyad’s role to facilitate trade and support local merchants to do business efficiently at global standards. It further bolsters KDP’s global positioning as an import, re-export and transhipment centre as the country forges ahead to become one of the leading logistics hubs in the region. Underlining Asyad’s role as a market growth leader, this integration is yet another step in the Group’s carefully designed scheme to improve efficiencies andadopthigherstandardsacrossthelogisticssector.

Khazaen Dry Port is strategically located within easy reach of the booming economies in the region, with proximity to the Saudi-Omani border, UAE-Oman border, the Port of Sohar, the Port of Salalah, and the Port of Suwaiq. It is purposely designed and built over an area of 100,000 m2; KDP is a one-stop shop for custom clearance, inspection and handling and storage of containers, and cargomovementatMuscat’sdoorstep.

Since starting its operations, KDP has leveraged its unique value proposition in Khazaen Economic City to attract major corporations and global players to invest in Oman. As the country’s first integrated in-land dry port, it connects the City and other economic areas in the Sultanate to seaports, airports and land borders through a network of roads designed to accommodate land transport andshipment.
