... and I have witnessed many great examples of how they keep lifting standards for what is possible.

“Let’s start with Pipavav, which has – for the second consecutive year–securedthepositionofIndia’s most efficient port in in the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2022 rankings published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence. Our terminal (where we provide jobs for approximately 2,500 people) plays a key role in the local economy of Gujarat. It helps diversify the state’s economy by facilitating trade, improving connectivity andultimatelyimpactingGDPgrowth.

“We continue to invest in developing Port Pipavav’s infrastructure, with significant achievements, such as establishing a new liquid berth at the port, new RoRo capabilities, or strengthening environment friendly rail connectivity at the port with the large consumption areas in the hinterland. Pipavav’s rail solution, which also allows fast and efficient inland transport of cargo from the port, will reduce cargo transit times by 50%, on top of offering safe, reliable, cost-effective logisticssolutionsthatalsogeneratelowerCO2emissions.

“In Mumbai we have a lot to be proud of. Our container terminaltopsthechartsintermsofproductivityinIndiaand is currently going through a massive upscaling process aimed at increasing its capacity by 10% to 2.2 million TEUs. This project, rightfully called “Fit for Future”,

entails a total investment of INR 8.0billion(approx.US$115million) in infrastructure development. This includes six new Ship-toShore (STS) cranes with higher and further reach and three Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes to acceleraterailperformance.

Reduced environmental impact inMumbai

“The terminal is also committed to minimising its environmental impact and has undertaken several initiatives to support this, such as recycling engine and gear box oils, solar panel installations, wind turbine ventilators, two speed engine conversiontonameafew.

In all our endeavours in India, we are lucky to have partners who share our vision and commitment to the future. I had the pleasure of meeting India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways and discussed how to further strengthen India’s maritime sector. We are thankful to the Indian government for driving regulatory reforms thathelpmovethesectorintherightdirection.Wewelcome further initiatives that increase the competitiveness of the industryandensurealevelplayingfieldforallplayers.

As always, our business would be nothing without the people working here, and I left India highly energised and moved by the enthusiasm and positive energy from my colleagues. It is always great to see and experience every heart and brain in the game and all the great things thatmaterialisewhenweareinthistogether.”

has

regained

the

Top Feedering spot : Alphaliner

LONDON : X-Press Feeders has regained the top spot from DP World unit Unifeeder as the world‘s largestcommonfeederoperator.

Alphaliner’s latest report, issued recently, said that the Singapore-based X-Press Feeders, now the 16th largest operator, has expanded its fleet by 2.1% since June 2022, and now has a capacity of 134,773 TEU,including71,232TEUofownedvessels.

Overthesameperiod,Unifeeder(ranked19th)has reduced its fleet capacity by 18%, and now operates 118,571 TEU of ships, all consisting of chartered tonnage.

Unifeeder began downsizing its fleet after AsiaEurope volumes began regressing to pre-Covid-19 levels, affecting demand for the Aarhus-based carrier’s feeder services connecting North Europe with the Baltic region. This saw Unifeeder redelivering more than 7,000 TEUs of vessels which

have since been redeployed by other carriers in the Europeanshortseasegment.

Acquired by DP World in 2018, Unifeeder is an asset-light operator, relying fully on the charter marketforitstonnageneeds.

Of X-Press Feeders’ fleet, 51% is owned, up from 42%inJune2021.

X-Press Feeders’ orderbook now stands at 90,000 TEU which represents an impressive 65% of its existing fleet. This includes six 1,250 TEU methanol dual-fuelled container ships commissioned at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding on 31 May, fordeliveryin2025and2026.

Not all of X-Press Feeders’ newbuildings will be self-operated, and two 7,000 TEU ships contracted at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding have been chartered to CMA CGM, which has been actively securing more tonnage as mainline operators continue to battle for market share.

American businesses looking at India as a place where they can diversify their supply chains: US Congressman

NEW YORK: American businesses are looking at India as a place where they can diversify their supply chains, an influential US lawmaker has said on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden state visit at the invitation of PresidentJoeBiden.IndiaandtheUS haveanenormousabilitytocooperate on technology and innovation, and this is partly because of the diaspora, Indian-American Congressman RoKhannasaidinhiskeynoteaddress totheinauguralINDUS-Xconference.

It used to be that being IndianAmerican was a challenge and rising up the corporate hierarchy, he said at the event organised by US-India Business Council in partnership with the Department of Defence and India's Department of Defence Production.

"Now, and I'm joking, you almost have to be Indian-American to run oneofthesetechcompanies. It'scome a long way, but that provides a huge opportunity to cooperate on critical research, AI, on critical research, on climate, on critical cooperation, and helping foster a manufacturing renaissance in the US and making sure manufacturing is taking place in India as opposed to China for the Asiahub,"Khannasaid.

"I mean (Apple's) Tim Cook in my (Congressional) district, I mean, he is talkingaboutgoingtoIndia.Everyone in the Valley and other parts of the business world are looking at India as a place where they can diversify their supply chains," said the IndianAmerican lawmaker who represents Silicon Valley in the US House of Representatives.

Khanna in his remarks noted the popularity of Prime Minister Modi in the US. "l will tell you what the mark of how far we came when the British Prime Minister came here post-Brexit, no one really cared. No one paid attention. And when the Indian Prime Minister is coming, the entire Congress is the hottest ticket in town. Now, if you had told my grandfather that the Indian Prime Minister is going to way outshine the British Prime Minister, that would not have been a likelystory,"hesaid.

Noting that both India and the US areimperfectdemocracies, hesaidno one would describe America these days as a perfect democracy. One just has to see the gun shootings, and votingrightsandonehastolookatthe challengestheUSfaces, headded.

Fitch raises India's GDP forecast to 6.3% for current fiscal year

NEW YORK: Fitch Ratings raised its prediction for India's economic growth to 6.3 per cent for the current fiscal year 2023–2024 from its prior prediction of 6 per cent. This is mostly due to near-term momentum and a strongeroutturninthefirstquarter

The growth projection is in comparison to the 7.2 per cent GDP growth in FY23. The economy had expanded by 9.1 per cent in the

precedingfiscalyear(FY22).

"India's economy has been showing broad-based strength - with GDP up by 6.1 per cent year-on-year in 1Q23 (January-March) and autosales, PMI surveys and credit growth remaining robust in recent months - and we have raised our forecast for the fiscal year ending in March 2024 (FY23-24) by 0.3 percentage points to 6.3 per cent," theratingagencysaid.

In March, Fitch reduced its projection for 2023–2024 from 6.2 per cent to 6 per cent, noting challenges from high inflation and interest rates as well as weak global demand.

For 2024-25 and 2025-26 fiscal years, it estimated a growth of 6.5 per cent each. Since then, inflation has eased and the domestic economy has pickedup.

COSCO SHIPPING Logistics and Supply Chain Management provides Innovative Shipping Solutions for Oversize Freight Transportation

BEIJING: Over the past few years, COSCO SHIPPING Logistics and Supply Chain Management, along with its affiliated organizations, carefully examined the properties of shipments and performed risk assessments throughout the transportation process to improve their service quality, particularly regarding the difficulties faced by customers when transporting heavy and oversize cargoes. To provide efficient and high-quality service solutions, the company established a long-term contact mechanism with customers emphasizing "one-on-one" communication. This ensures the safe, high-quality, cost-effective, and efficient transportation of oversized freight, thereby relieving customers ofanyconcerns.

Expert support + personalized design = safeandscientificsolution

Penavico Shipping Logistics (Ningbo) recently set a new record in loading super-large and heavy equipment when the ship "RUN ZHOU 6" departed from the Port of Dalian carrying three unloaders and one loading machine.

The equipment, which included a ship unloader weighing 1,100 tons and measuring 85 meters long, 28.3 meters wide, and 57 meters high, presented a significantchallengeduetoitscomplexstructure.

After receiving the customer's commission, the company quickly set up a joint project team. Technical experts held meetings to discuss the loading machine's loading and unloading scheme, which was not entirely suitable for ro-ro shipment. They carefully analyzed the specifications, designedanddemonstratedhighlytechnical safe transportation data, and their previous operating experience. After dividing the equipment into two parts for loading from the ship stern and side, they finally adopted a ro-roloadingschemethateffectivelyensuredcargoloading andunloadingsafety.

Under the joint efforts of all parties, the project team successfully completed five loading tasks within six days, despite numerous difficulties and challenges, and provided scientific, efficient and high-quality service recognized by allpartiesinvolved.

Planning in advance + communication with specially-assignedpersonnel=efficientshipment

Recently, the bulk carrier "AFRICAN SISTERS", currently sailing under the flag of Panama for Penavico Fujian (Zhangzhou), left Berth No. 5 at Zhangzhou CMG Terminal for Antofagasta, Chile, with 13 sets of wind power towerbarrelsonboard.

In order to ensure a smooth export process for the equipment, the company formed a professional project team consisting of personnel with wind power equipment operation experience. This team was responsible for communicating with the customer, terminal and shipowners well in advance, leveraging their professional expertise to determine terminal storage plans and create terminal storage charts based on the vessel stowage plan. During the goods congregation at the port, dedicated personnelwereassignedtostayincontactwiththecustoms and terminal 24/7 to ensure the goods were cleared upon arrival, and that there was a seamless connection between cargocongregation, exportdeclarationandcargoloading.

Fineservice+flexibleresponse=improvedefficiency

The Tai'an Branch of COSCO SHIPPING Logistics (Qingdao)recentlycompletedatransportationundertaking involving exporting 38-ton oversized equipment from the Port of Tianjin. This project has established a new transportation method for oversize goods exportation

while simultaneously enabling the client to open up a novel logisticschanneltoSouthAmerica.

Given the operational difficulties that arose due to the equipment's ultra-high and ultra-wide dimensions, the company gathered its business backbone to form a specialized team that conducted multiple on-site inspections of the goods, and engaged in frequent discussions with the client regarding specific packing and shipping details. The team tackled the shipping difficulties, from the positioning of lifting points to handling vehicle transportation licenses for large cargo, and developed a meticulouspackagereinforcementschemeandcustomized logistics transportation solutions that ensured the successfulcompletionofthetransportationmission. Comprehensive analysis + efficient management = costsaving

In a recent attempt to explore deeper into the market, COSCO SHIPPING Logistics (Nantong) secured a bid to oversee a DAP transportation project, which involved the exportation of air compressors to Thailand for a new client. The company delivered the first batch of equipment to the destination with professional, fast, and cost-effective logisticssolutions.

When the equipment was packed and ready for shipment, there was a temporary traffic control at the factory location, which caused some oversized goods to be unable to be shipped as planned. Upon discovering this issue, the project team collaborated with the warehouse to prepare for a delayed delivery. Meanwhile, the team contacted the manufacturer and leveraged their extensive experience transporting large equipment to integrate resources from various parties. As a result, the equipment was successfully transported to the designated warehouse forcargocongregationbeforethedeadline.

Moreover, as the shipping date was approaching, the customer unexpectedly requested to apply for an ASEANChina Free Trade Area Preferential Tariff Certificate of Origin(FORME),astheylackedanycommodityinspection record and it was their first time engaging in export business. The project team promptly responded to assist the customer with online declaration and prepared all the necessary materials for certificate application. With the efficient cooperation of all parties involved, the certificate was issued on the day of departure and sent to Thailand. This allowed the consignee at the destination to apply for subsequent tariff reduction and exemption, ensuring the customer'sproductionandoperationstability.

Maersk to pioneer 1st Container vessel conversion to methanol dual-fuel engine

COPENHAGEN: As the first in the shipping industry, A.P. MollerMaersk (Maersk) will retrofit an existing ship to a dual-fuel methanol powered vessel and thereby able to sail on green methanol1. The first engine retrofit in the industry is scheduled to be conducted medio 2024 and it is the intent to replicate on sister vessels when goingforspecialsurveyin2027.

“We have set an ambitious netzeroemissionstargetfor2040acrosstheentirebusiness and have taken a leading role in decarbonising logistics. Retrofitting of engines to run on methanol is an important lever in our strategy. With this initiative, we wish to pave the way for future scalable retrofit programs in the industry and thereby accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to green fuels. Ultimately, we want to demonstrate that methanol retrofits can be a viable alternative to new buildings,” said, Leonardo Sonzio, Head of Fleet Management andTechnologyatMaersk.

Maersk has signed an agreement with MAN Energy Solutions(MANES)whowillretrofittheengine.

“In 2021, we ordered the world’s first methanolenabled container vessel following a commitment to the principle of only ordering newbuilt vessels that can sail on green fuels. Concurrently, we have explored the potential in retrofitting existing vessels with dual-fuel methanol engines. Having teamed up with MAN ES,

we are now ready to demonstrate how retrofitting vessels with methanol dual-fuel capabilities can be done,” said, Leonardo Sonzio, Head of Fleet Management and Technology atMaersk.

Besidesaimingtoachievenet-zero in 2040, Maersk has also set tangible near-term targets for 2030 to ensure alignment with the Paris Agreement and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology. This translates to a 50% reduction in emissions per transported container in the Maersk Ocean fleet compared to 2020, andfurthermore 25% of itscontainervolumewillby2030 betransportedusinggreenfuels.

Projecttobeginnextyear

Replacing engine parts and thereby making the engine able to operate on methanol is a rather complex task, but only a part of the larger retrofit operation. For instance, new fuel tanks, fuel preparation room and fuel supply system are also a part of the retrofitting the vesselforgreenmethanol.

“Detailed engineering for the first retrofit is ongoing and the actual implementation will take place in the middle of 2024. Meanwhile, discussions with potential yards are ongoing,” said, Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology and responsible for the retrofit projectatMaersk.

Maersk is currently operating more than 700 vessels witharound300ofthembeingownedbyMaersk.
