NEW DELHI: “As of now we started our year with a target of 10% growth, but we have to wait and see how the things will pan out in the Export-Import sector. Domestic, we are getting good demand and we are hopeful that in domestic we will be able to grow. But Export-Import, we are waiting for the export-import scenario to get clear,”says VKalyanaRama,Chairman&MD,Concor.

Currently, exports are not very encouraging but I cannot predict it for the whole year because people are expecting the things to improve. But as we see the headwinds in the Western markets are not very good. We are facing headwinds for the exports going from India,exceptfortheprimaryagroproducts.

Valueaddedservices

Domestic is not having as good margins as ExportImport. But in the revenue, if we see our domestic revenuepercentageitisincreasingyearonyear.Sotoget more margins, we are trying to add a lot of value-added servicesintothedomestic.

We started first mail, last mail logistics. We started business support solutions. Now we started new products. So we call it material handling methodologies. Bulkcementwearehandlinginnormalcontainersthatis a very new product and it is picking up. So with these value-added services, we are trying to improve upon our marginsindomesticandalsowearetryingtogetintothe distributionlogisticsverysoon.

So, going forward, there may be a little strain on the marginsbutoverallIexpectthemarginsinthisyeartobe maintained. We are working towards that because in Export-Import,westarteddoingdoublestackdirectfrom our depot. We got a depot called Dadri in Delhi, NCR region that is now connected directly to DFC (Dedicated Freight Corridor). And now we are not going through hub. Earlier we used to go through the hub of Kathuwas. Because of this, there is a lot of interest generated. The transittimeshavecomedown.

So, there is a very good interest developed among the customers because it is better than road movement now, even for light community cargos, time-sensitive cargos everythingwillcomeontoDadri.

Even we started doing reefer double stack also. So, a lot of new products we are introducing into the ExportImportsector.

With all that, we will be able to maintain our volumes inExport-Importthatwillmaintainourmargins.Sotogo

with at the beginning of this financial year, the guidance will be that we will try to maintain our margins. There may be a little pressures on margins, but our aim is to maintainthemargins.

Containerisation

In domestic, we are seeing good growth that is where the containerization will come in. Exports, whatever exports earlier going on, they are going on in containers only because the western countries, they accept goods moreincontainersratherthaninthebreakbulkandbulk mode.

So there the growth will come with the export-import scenario.Howweareabletodowellinourexportsorhow much we are importing, that decides the volumes whereas in domestic, the more and more goods can be containerized.

In the domestic side, there is a very good growth potential. With the new methods and the new products we are bringing into containers, there is a huge scope, like the bulk cement – handling of bulk commodities in normal containers. The size of this market is 400 million tonsandwehavetappednoteven10%.

Sothereisahugemarkettheretoexplore,tocapture. It is a virgin market. There are certain headwinds for this, the container availability, because now we are encouraging Atmanirbhar Bharat in India and we are importingcontainers.Thecontainershortageistherefor domestic movement for us as of now. We are working along with railways and various other industrial units to overcometheshortage.

Gatishakti

WewillbeworkingwithGatiShaktischeme,wherever the new terminals are coming up, where we have to use the Gati Shakti, we are definitely using it and at the existing terminals, there is an established business practice. We have taken up a new terminal at a place called Mandalgarh near Kota under Gati Shakti so that wearedevelopingunderGatiShakti.

And even terminals which are not on railway land parcels where we are directly purchasing land parcels and developing, there also we will take the advantage of Gati Shakti in developing all the support services. So there is no time frame for implementing Gati Shakti for all the terminals. Gati Shakti is a continuous process and the main idea of PM Gati Shakti program is to help logistics improvements and to reduce logistics cost in India.

HMM enters acquisition race for Hyundai LNG Shipping

SEOUL: HMM, a South Korean shipping giant, has joined the race to acquire Hyundai LNG Shipping, the country’s top liquefied natural gas (LNG)transporter.

According to industry insiders on May 18, HMM has expressed its intention to IMM Private Equity to carry out due diligence and participate in the main bidding for Hyundai LNG Shipping. IMM Private Equity is a private investment fund manager holding a 100% stake in HyundaiLNGShipping.

At present, Hyundai LNG Shipping owns a fleet of 23 vessels, including 16 LNG carriers, six liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, and one LNG bunkering vessel. The company boasts a stable income stream,

derived from long-term contracts with Korea Gas Corporationandinternationalclients.

Last year, HMM unveiled a medium-to-long-term strategy aimed at portfolio diversification. The company’s revenue structure is heavily dependent on the container sector, directly linked to global economic trends. As part of its strategy, HMM plans to expand its fleet of bulk carriers, known for their stable profitability. Notably, the LNG shipping market is projected to see a significant uptick due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraineconflict.

Hyundai LNG Shipping was initially part of HMM’s LNG transportation division. In 2014, HMM sold this division for KRW 500 billion to improve its liquidity position.

Ban on wheat exports, curbs on rice shipments to stay

NEW DELHI: To safeguard consumers from any spike in domestic prices in the coming months, the government is understood to have decided against liftingthebanonexportsofwheatand wheatproductssuchasattathisyear.

It is not considering lifting the prohibition on shipment of broken rice either. The export tax of 20% on whitericeimposedinSeptember2022 willalsolikelystaythroughthisfiscal.

Retail inflation in wheat and rice stood at 15.46% and 11.37% respectivelyinApril.

“We are keeping the option of imposing stock-holding limits to

improve supplies,” an official told recently. “We are still competitive globally despite export taxes on certain varieties of rice,” the official said, negating the chances of any relaxationonexportrestrictions.

India’s rice exports rose by more than 15% on year to a record $11.1 billion in FY23 and 22 million tonne (MT) in terms of volume despite imposition of restriction on riceshipments.

The ban on shipment of wheat in May 2022 except on shipments under government-to-government arrangements for food security — was necessitated by a drop in the

production of the cereal in the 2021-22 crop year (July-June) and procurement by government agencies dropping 56.6% to only 18.8 MT against 43.3 MT purchased from the farmers in the 2021-22 season(April-June).

In September, India, the world’s biggest rice exporter with 40% share in global trade, had imposed ban on broken rice exports and put 20% export tariffs on the non-basmati and non-parboiled rice, a measure that was aimed at improving domestic suppliesamidexpectationofadecline in production in 2022-23 crop season (July-June).

Hamad Port 8th in World on Container Performance Index

DOHA: Hamad Port, Qatar’s main gateway to world trade, continues to impress as it has ranked eighth in the world and third in the Arab region on the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2022, Mwani Qatar saidinatweetrecently.

The index issued by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence “reflects the port’s highquality operations, as it measures the time needed by ships to complete loading and unloading tasks”, MwaniQatarstressed.

The index confirms the high capabilities of Hamad Port, which is one of the largest ports in the

Middle East, it added.

According to ‘The Container Port Performance Index 2022: A Comparable Assessment of Performance based on Vessel Time in Port’, issued by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence: “The challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath on the sector eased in 2022, an easing that has continued into early 2023. This has resulted in an improvement in both port congestion and a reduction in logistical disruption. The improvement in 2022 has had a positive impact on the performance

and ranking of some ports; where the problem was systemic, as opposed to location specific, the inherent inefficiency remains.

“One of the ‘silver linings’ of the pandemicwasgreaterawarenessand focus on the resilience and efficiency of the maritime gateways, where any friction will result in tangible impacts on consumer choice, price and ultimatelyeconomicdevelopment.”

The performance of a port may be assessed based on a myriad of measurements, such as: terminal capacity or space utilisation, cost, landside connectivity & services, or shiptoshoreinterchange.

“Looking at the export prospects and the available budget for the scheme for this fiscal, it seems there will be enough funds available to continuetheRoDTEP schemeforthe chemicals, pharmaceuticals and iron & steel sectors beyond September 30 2023. While the tenure of the extension is yet to be decided, it could be up to six months till the end of the fiscal,” an official tracking the matter saidrecently.

However, the Government is unlikely to extend the scheme for the identifiedsectorsinperpetuity,likeall other sectors covered under the scheme,asfundingmaybeanissueat any time in the future, the official explained.

The RoDTEP scheme refunds exporters the embedded duties/taxes that are not rebated under other schemes. These include VAT on fuel used in transportation, mandi tax and

duty on electricity used during manufacturing. As the scheme refunds input taxes that are calculated transparently, it complies withWTOnorms.

When the scheme was announced inJanuary2021,itcovered8,731items from most export sectors except for organic and inorganic chemicals, pharmaceuticals and iron & steel, which covered most engineering items.However,theGovernmentlater decided to extend the scheme to the excluded sectors as well, which expanded the list of eligible items to 10,342, per DGFT figures. However, the benefits were extended only for the December 2022-September 30, 2023period.

“Since the chemicals, pharma and iron & steel items account for a large chunkofIndia’sexports,theRoDTEP payout to these would also be substantial. That is why the Government may want to have the

flexibility of extending the benefit of the scheme to these sectors when there is enough fund available and withdraw it when finances are an issue,”theofficialexplained.

Allocation for the RoDTEP scheme in FY 2023 was increased by 10 per cent to Rs 15,069 crore, from Rs 13,699 crore in 2022-23. Exports in April 2023, on the other hand, declined by 12.7 per cent to $34.66 billion as recessionary trends in many Western economies and Russia’s continued war in Ukraine madean`activeimpact’.

“As export of goods is slowing down, claims for RoDTEP are not likely to rise significantly this year as they are directly linked to the exports carried out. So, the Commerce Department is unlikely to over-spend the allocation made under the scheme even if is extended to the identified sectors beyond September 30,”theofficialsaid.

KOLKATA: Exports of engineering goodstoRussiajumped11timesinApril this year to USD 133.6 million as compared to year-ago month while the US and China markets continued to soften, the engineering export promotion council said recently. Engineering exports to the CIS country wereUSD11.7millioninApril2022.

The value of engineering exports to the US was USD 1.4 billion in April 2023, down 24.9 per cent compared to USD 1.86billionintheyear-agomonth.

Shipments to China too continued with the declining trend and fell 15.5 per cent to USD 183.3 millionin April2023 as compared to USD 216.9 million in the samemonthlastyear.

However, exports to Oman more than doubled during the month to USD 153.9 million over the corresponding monthofApril2022.

Out of 25 top destinations for Indian engineering goods, as many as 15 saw positive year-on-year growth during the month under review while 10 countries witnessedaregrowth.

The top 25 countries, including the US, Germany, the UK, France, Indonesia and Singapore, contribute

about 76 per cent of the total engineeringexportsfromIndia.

Engineering exports from India continued to decline in 2023-24 as April 2023sawa7.15percentdroptoUSD8.99 billion as against USD 9.68 billion in April2022.

Drop in shipment to North America, the EU and ASEAN region led to a declineinoverallengineeringexports.

Commenting on the latest export data, EEPC India chairman Arun Kumar Garodia stated that the decline in exports was caused due to demand slowdown in almost all regions barring Latin America, WANA, parts of Europe andOceania.

WANA region comprises 19 countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Yemen,LibyaandSouthSudan.

"Significant export decline was noted in North America as the US is currentlygoingthroughabankingcrisis and a debt ceiling crisis. Its imports have come down in the last few months. Exports to the EU have been impacted by the ongoing Ukraine-Russia crisis

andthewithdrawaloftheGSPbenefits," Garodiasaidinapressrelease.

"South Asia situations remain grim as Bangladesh's economy suffers from the lowering global demand and Nepal and Sri Lanka reel under the debt crisis,"headded.

NHAI creates World record : 100 kms of expressway laid in 100 hours

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has added yet another feather to its illustrious cap by laying 100 kms of new expressway within 100 hours. The landmark was achieved during construction of the upcoming Ghaziabad-Aligarh Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. Union Minister ShriNitinGadkari made the announcement while sharing images of the new expressway under construction. The expressway is part of the National Highway 34 that will connectGhaziabadandAligarhthroughBulandshahr.

Nitin Gadkari attended a programme at Bulandshahr through video conference recently to celebrate the landmark achievement. Congratulating the agency, Gadkari said, “This accomplishment highlights the dedication and ingenuity of India’s road infrastructure industry.” The expressway is being constructed in partnership with Larsen and Toubro and Cube Highways, anagencybasedinSingapore.

The expressway is being constructed using Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) technology that has helped NHAI to reduce carbon emission. Gadkari said, “Thisinnovativegreentechnologyinvolvesutilising90%of the milled material, which amounts to nearly 20 lakh square meters of road surface. Consequently, the consumption of virgin materials has been reduced to a mere10%.”

The Ghaziabad-Aligarh Expressway spans a total of 118 kms. Besides Ghaziabad and Aligarh, the expressway

will also connect places like Dadri, Noida, Sikandrabad, BulandhshahrandKhurjainUttarPradesh.“Itservesasa criticaltraderoute,facilitatingthemovementofgoodsand contributing to regional economic development by connecting industrial areas, agricultural regions, and educationalinstitutions,”Gadkarisaidinatweet.

It took around 80,000 workers, 200 road rollers for the agency to achieve the feat in record time. The a six-lane expressway will cut down travel time between Ghaziabad andAligarhconsiderably.

Creating record of laying new highways at fast pace is not new for the NHAI. In August last year, NHAI set the Guinness World Record by successfully constructing the 75 km continuous single bituminous concrete road between Amravati and Akola on NH-53 in a record time of 105hoursand33minutes.

Number of China-Europe freight trains up 17% in first four months

BEIJING: China-Europe freight train service has witnessed solid growth in the first four months of this year, givenacontinuousriseoftransportcapacityandefficiency, datafromChinaStateRailwayGroupshowed.

A total of 5,611 China-Europe freight trains ran from January to April, a year-on-year increase of 17 percent, and about 609,000 standard containers of goods were transported, up 32 percent from a year earlier, the company said.

In April alone, the number of China-Europe freight train trips increased by 25 percent year-on-year to 1,459, and the trains carried about 160,000 standard containers,up45percentyear-on-year.

Ma Siwei, General Manager of Heze-based Shandong China Post International Logistics Co, told theGlobalTimesrecentlythatthecompanyhaswitnessed a jump of freight trains to five Central Asian countries in recentmonths.

“Almost 60 percent of my goods have been transported to Central Asian countries, which is a huge increase,” hesaid.

Freight transport is now in an upward trend, Ma said, explaining that the profit for one container has jumped to 2,000-3,000 yuan ($285-428) in the past one or two months, while that was only a few hundred yuan during the Spring Festival holidays.
