Höegh Autoliners : Increasing focus on sustainability in RoRo shipping
OSLO: With an increasing focus on sustainability, the l e a d i n g R o R o s h i p p i n g companies are introducing more environmentally friendly methods to meet customer demands while preserving the oceans and maritime life. This article will explore some of the most prominent initiatives in RoRo shipping today. Fuel efciency and decarbonization
A wide range of technology can now be implemented in both new and already-built vessels to increase their fuel efficiency.
This means that vessels can perform the same level of shipping activities consuming less fuel and, therefore, releasing less carbon emissions into the environment
For instance, freight transport companies can equip existing vessels with optimized hulls, bulbous bows, and propellers, designed to make the ships more aerodynamic and energy efficient
Additionally, innovative technology such as air lubrication, cooling, exhaust gas cleaning, slow steaming, and waste heat recovery systems are increasingly utilized in the industry to further reduce fuel consumption.

Container Train Operators (ACTO) seeks relief from Indian Railways
MUMBAI: The Association of Container Train Operators or ACTO, has sought relief from the Indian Railways on stabling and underframe charges by treating it as a “force majeure” situation.
The lingering Red Sea crisis has started to bite container train operators as dwindling volumes force them to stable (park) trains and resort to a so-called underframe running to cut costs.
“The container train operating industry is facing a
crisis,” Mr Manish Puri, President, Association of Container Train Operators or ACTO, a lobby group for the sector was quoted as saying recently
ACTO has sought relief from the Indian Railways on stabling and underframe charges by treating it as a “force majeure” situation.
Force Majeure is a clause that absolves firms from meeting their contractual commitments for reasons beyond their control.

Höegh Autoliners : Increasing focus on sustainability in RoRo shipping
Cont’d from Pg. 3
O n e o f t h e m o s t important steps towards d e c a r b o n i z a t i o n , however, is the use of cleanerfuelsinoceanfreightlogistics
Many RoRo shipping companies have shifted towards low-sulfur fuels and LNG (liquified natural gas), which can drastically reduce the pollution caused by sulfur dioxide emissions.
Industry leaders are also turning their attention to Biofuel - one of the most environmentally-friendly fuel options available. Derived from sustainable waste oil, Biofuel is virtually sulfur-free and reduces net carbon emissions by 100% from tank to air Many new build projects are involving enabling the vessels to run on future fuels, such as Ammonia and Methanol.
Biosecurity
To further minimize the environmental harm caused by ocean freight activities, biosecurity is a key part of sustainability initiatives in RoRo shipping.
Biosecurity is concerned with the prevention of spreadinginvasivespeciesandharmfulpeststonewmarine environments. One such measure is BWTS (Ballast Water Treatment Systems), which uses methods such as UV lamps to kill or inactivate plankton, bacteria, and viruses in ballast water
Another common method is the use of hull paint, which prevents invasive species from attaching to the vessel’s hull. In addition to the vessel, there are strict cleanliness requirements for the cargo itself. High-risk shipments may undergo special biosecurity procedures, including heat treatments and fumigation
Ship recycling
The manner in which old and obsolete vessels are disposed of should also follow sustainability practices.
RoRo shipping companies must adhere to the green recycling practices outlined in the Hong Kong I n t e r n a t i o n a l C o n v e n t i o n f o r t h e S a f e a n d Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.
This includes strict requirements for the shipyard facilities and the methods used to dismantle the ship, ensuring that the most sustainable procedures are utilized.
As part of the sustainability practices, the recycling process must also consider the health and safety of its workers. Toxic waste must be disposed of safely and the activities must not pose any negative environmental impact on the local communities.
Waste management
Green waste management practices aim to protect marine biodiversity and reduce the ecological footprint of RoRo shipping. The Zero Garbage Overboard principle, for example, is a commitment to refrain from releasing any garbage, other than food waste, into the ocean. All garbage produced on board should be disposed of using appropriate methods at the approved onshore facilities.
Shipping companies may also have specific procedures in place to handle sludge and bilge water, which can contain oils, grease, and chemicals. Modern technology can be used to analyze the water content and prevent high amounts of residue from being discharged into the ocean The waste collected is then safely disposed of onshore.
Net zero emission goals
The green initiatives in RoRo shipping go beyond the mere compliance of current regulations Höegh Autoliners, are pioneering the industry with the
ambitious goals for net zero emissions by 2040.
As the leading roll-on roll-off car shipping company we are building 12 new zero carbon-ready Aurora Class vessels that are on track to become the world’s most sustainable car carriers.
These vessels will be the first to receive DNV’s ammonia and methanol-ready notations in the PCTC segment. With the arrival of the first vessel in August 2024, Aurora Class will revolutionize the space with more than 50% lower carbon footprint than the current industry standard.
Despite its environmentally friendly nature, the Au r o r a s w i l l a l s o b e t h e l a r g e s t R o R o c a r shipping vessel in the industry, with a capacity of up to 9,100 cars
Let us handle your shipment responsibly
At Höegh Autoliners, our commitment to a greener future goes hand in hand with our high standard of service We will handle your shipment in the most efficient, secure, and environmentally friendly manner possible

NEW DELHI: Iran, UAE and Bangladesh have emerged as the leading importers of Indian origin soyabean meal in the last six months, according to a body of soyabean processors and exporters.
Soyabean meal exports during October 2023 to March 2024 stood at 13.47 lakh ton as against 11.79 lakh ton in the corresponding period a year ago, according to Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA).
Import of soyabean meal by Iran during October 2023 to March 2024 stood at 31.6 lakh ton, Bangladesh at 2.62 lakh ton and UAE 2.6 lakh ton,
data by SOPA showed.
SOPA has upward revised the export of soyabean meal in the ongoing oil year to 18 lakh ton as against 14 lakh ton assessed last month.
D N Pathak, executive director, SOPA said “We have reassessed the export, import and crushing data, based on fresh information received and have reverted to our original estimate of crushing and soymeal export for the oil year at 120 lakh tons and 18 lakh tons.”
P a t h a k s a i d , I r a n , U A E , Bangladesh and Nepal were the four
biggest destinations for Indian soymeal in the last six months.
Though, exports of soyabean meal in March slipped to 1.76 lakh ton, down from 3.27 lakh ton in the same period a year ago.
Madhya Pradesh is a leading soybean producing state in the country contributing over 60 per cent in total production and is a major trading center
In the 2022-23 oil year, exports of soyabean meal from India were 18.4 lakh ton owing to a surge in demand from South East Asian countries, according to SOPA

Cost, Speed Top Priority for Logistics sector : Last-Mile Trends report 2024
NEW DELHI: Cost and speed has now become the top priority of the firms engaged in logistics business for the last-mile delivery of goods and growth of the sector, a report has said.
According to the Last-Mile Trends Report 2024, earlier the top priority was costandsatisfaction.“Inlast-miledelivery now top priority is cost and speed The needle has shifted from cost and satisfaction to cost and speed,”it said
The report was unveiled during ‘The Last Mile Leaders Event” organised by technology platfor m FarEye in collaboration with Microsoft last week.
Kushal Nahata, Co-Founder and CEO of FarEye, said that within the next five years, autonomous drones will handle 30 per cent of urban deliveries, reducing delivery times
and costs dramatically
The report was based on insights gathered from over 300 leaders across f i v e c o n t i n e n t s , r e p r e s e n t i n g companies with a combined revenue exceeding USD 100 billion.
Out of 300 participants, over 50 per cent stated that they deliver the goods same day/next day The report also said that 80 per cent of supply chain leaders believe measuring the cost of delivery is a top priority
FarEye has also launched an initiative, ‘last-mile innovation nexus’, to help startups raise funds and receive mentoring from global experts in the logistics sector
Gautam Kumar, COO & Cofounder, FarEye, said: “The initiative is a launch pad for startups to secure
transformative partnerships It is exciting to see the surge in the adoption of AI, robotics, and embedded data analytics, all geared toward enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of logistics operations.”
Over 40 supply chain experts from more than 20 countries, representing diverse industries including retail, logistics, postal, consumer packaged goods (CPG), and pharmaceuticals, came together at the event to explore the transfor mative potential of technology in driving cost reduction in the logistics sector.
Nahata added that with urban delivery traffic projected to increase carbon emissions by 32 per cent by 2030, prioritizing sustainability is nonnegotiable.
Container Train Operators (ACTO) seeks relief from Indian Railways
Cont’d from Pg. 3
Freight rates have soared after container ships started taking a longer route via the Cape of Good Hope instead of the Suez Canal since October last year to avoid attacks on commercial ships by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.
The longer transit and sailing time and the spike in freight rates have led to a dip in import volumes in February and March.
“Now we are seeing that exports are also beginning to take a hit because whatever inventories/empties were available in India, they have been utilised and there is a shortage of empties for exports. As a result, pricing on exports has gone up because of the shortage of containers. Further, getting inventories/empty containers is becoming a challenge because of the high ocean freights and geopolitical issues in the Middle East,” said Puri.
Traditionally, empty containers are sourced from the Middle East or sometimes even from Europe.
“So, initially we faced a dip in imports; now we are facing a dip in exports as well,” Puri stated.
The soaring freight rates have also impacted the sourcing patterns of importers for materials such as low v a l u e w a s t e p a p e r a n d s c r a p , which used to be imported in large quantities to feed the industry instead of relying on expensive wood pulp and steel pellets or pig iron.
“That cycle is beginning to change because things like scrap, wastepaper, handicraft rugs etc have become costlier and the importers are finding that they can’t afford to manufacture as their exports, in turn, will become very expensive. That has also started impactingtheimportvolumes,”Purisaid.
The high prices have become a challenge to the trade and when the prices go up significantly, the rail sector or the service industry also feels the
pinch.
“In such a scenario, what the trader is willing to pay to transport goods is very low because he is already paying a huge amount in terms of ocean freight. So, the pressure has come on to the domestic market,” Puri explained.
“It’s a chaotic situation where one thing is affecting the second which, in turn, is affecting the third,” he pointed out.
Besides, the dip in volumes has also led to lower double stacking.
“When double stacking goes down, costs go up because double stacking is a cost reduction exercise. Secondly, almost all the container train operators have added to their fleets in terms of more containers and wagons over the last couple of years, particularly after the COVID pandemic. Now, with the volumes coming down suddenly, that fleet is beginning to become surplus, so the operators are having to stable some of it,” Puri said.
Aside idling the assets, stabling is also causing a cost issue as the Indian Railways levy stabling charges per train per day
The huge imbalance in imports and exports has also led to empty and under frame running.
“All of these are cost to the system against which there is no revenue potential,” Puri noted.
“We have told the Indian Railways that the Red Sea situation is like a force majeure. It’s nothing that we can do anything about. The sector is facing a crisis, and the Indian Railways can see the numbers coming down because they have also been asking us the reasons for the volume decline. It’s not that we are not carrying the cargo, which is available, it’s simply that cargo itself is not available,” Puri said.
So, we are asking them for some short-term relief on stabling and under frame charges, he added.
Typically, when a surplus situation
occurs, the Indian Railways, at the behest of the industry, took the trains to the old railway yards where there was space, so that they didn’t end up congesting the system.
“What is happening now is because the Railways is also under pressure to increase its loading and to get more volumes, so even when the operators are requesting the Railways to take the train out of service for some period of time, they are keeping the trains on the system. Now, what that ends up doing is, if it is standing in a port or in an ICD, it starts taking up capacity And, a result, even though the volumes are down, we are getting these artificial chokings at either the port or the ICDs,” said a container train operator
“So, operators are wanting to hold the train. Normally, if you bring in a train and if there is enough cargo, you can leave in 3-4 hours. Now they are saying let’s keep the train waiting for a day so that we have enough containers to at least make sure underframe and empty running is reduced,” the operator added.
The container train operators, Puri said, have been attempting to address the situation by seeking to ensure regularity of service by trying to reposition empty containers from surplus to deficit locations at low costs, continuing with regular services both in import and export directions even at the cost of negligible double stack moves, and increased underframe running.
“This, however, has been leading to considerable stress in the sector, and with the forecasted numbers for April and the coming few months continuing to look difficult, there is an urgent need for Indian Railways to recognize this as a force majeure situation and provide some support to the CTO sector in the f o r m o f r e l i e f o n s t a b l i n g a n d underframe charges,” Puri wrote in a 19 April letter to Indian Railways.

India to surpass Japan as 4th largest economy in 2025 : IMF
TOKYO: India’s nominal gross domestic product will likely outstrip Japan’s in 2025 to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, according to an International Monetary Fund estimate, a year earlier than the previous projection.
India’s GDP will likely total $4.3398 trillion in 2025, compared with Japan’s $4.3103 trillion, the IMF said in its latest estimate.
The IMF’s forecast in October had India surpassing Japan in 2026. In its April update, the IMF revised GDP forecasts for both countries slightly in local currency terms, but the depreciation of the Japanese yen looks to reduce Japan’s economy in dollar terms, hastening the country’s decline in the rankings.
Japan’s GDP was eclipsed by Germany in 2023. If it is overtaken by India, it will drop to fifth place.
The Indian rupee has largely remained flat against the dollar since the beginning of 2023 due to what appears to be intervention by the Reserve Bank of India Currently, it stands at about 83 rupees per dollar.
In its December 2023 report on India, the IMF noted that the authorities’ intervention in the currency market was likely beyond the level needed.
T h e I n d i a n c e n t r a l b a n k countered that the IMF was making an erroneous analysis based solely on short-term exchange rate trends.
India’s nominal GDP was the 10th largest in the world as of 2014.
According to the IMF, it is expected to overtake Germany to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027 India overtook Japan in domestic automobile sales in 2022 to become the world’s third-largest m a r k e t a f t e r C h i n a a n d t h e United States.
Although the country suffered an economic slump during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has recorded high growth in recent years, driven by a rising population. The Reserve Bank of India expects GDP to grow 7% in real terms in fiscal year 2024.
Although India’s middle class is expanding, nominal GDP per capita is currently only in the mid-$2,000 range. This is about a fifth the level of China and close to that of Bangladesh.
Farm exports flat in FY24 as rice shipments plunge
NEW DELHI: India’s exports of agricultural and processed food products fell marginally – 0.55% on year – to $ 24.02 billion during 2023-24, primarily because rice shipments plunged amid restrictions.
However, in an year when overall goods exports of the country declined 3.1% on year, shipment of meat & d a i r y p r o d u c t s a n d f r u i t s & vegetables witnessed double-digit growth rates.
According to the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, rice exports in the last fiscal dropped 6.5% to $10.4 billion on year because of the ban on white and broken rice exports, shipment duties on parboiled rice and the ban on wheat exportsimposedinMaylastyear
Sources said that decline in the value of rice exports is attributed to decline in shipment of non-basmati rice due to several restrictions such as ban on white rice shipment and 20% export duty on part-boiled rice
exports imposed last year.
However, livestock products –buffalo meat, dairy and poultry, a key item in the APEDA basket rose by close to 12% last fiscal to $ 4.5 billion compared to FY23.
The exports of fresh fruits and vegetables rose by 14% in FY24 to $3.65 billion on year. The shipment of cereals preparations and processed items, rose by 9% to 2.8 billion last fiscal on year
Oil meals shipments in the current fiscal rose by 7% to 1.7 billion last fiscal on year.
The rice exports in the FY23 rose by more than 15% year-on-year to a record $ 11.1 billion from $9.6 billion in FY22 In terms of volume, rice shipment grew by 5% to a record 22.34 million tonne (MT) last fiscal. In the current fiscal, rice shipment is likely to be around 17 MT.
Meanwhile, to boost exports of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged rice varieties such as Gobindobhog,
Red rice, Black rice and Kalanamak rice, the government is discussing with the stakeholders to allocates separate numbers for harmonized system (HS) codes, a numerical classification used in global trade.
The aim is to ensure that in case of a ban or restriction on exports of broken or white rice, such unique varieties are exported unhindered Currently there are six HS codes for non-basmati rice and one for the basmati rice. The cashew exports in FY24 declined by 4.8% to 0.33 billion.
The exports of products under the APEDA basket grew by 9% to $24.1 billion in 2022-23 compared to FY22, due to a spike in shipment of rice, fruits and vegetables, livestock and dairy products.
The share of exports of products under the APEDA basket is around 51% in the total shipment of agriproduce Rest of the agricultural products exports include marine, tobacco, coffee and tea.
Shipping industry urges UN to protect vessels after Iran seizure
GENEVA: Merchant ships and seafarers are increasingly in peril at sea as attacks escalate in the Middle East and the United Nations must do more to protect supply chains, the industry said inaletterreleasedrecently
Tensions have soared across the Middle East since the start of Israel’s campaign in Gaza in October, with Israel or its ally the United States clashing repeatedly with Iranianaligned groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
In a letter sent to U.N. SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres, the world’s leading shipping industry associations said Iran’s seizure on
April 13 of the MSC Aries container ship 50 nautical miles off the United Arab Emirates coast “once again highlighted the intolerable situation where shipping has become a target”.
“Innocent seafarers have been killed, seafarers are being held hostage,” the letter said.
“The world would be outraged if four airliners were seized and held hostage with innocent souls onboard. Regrettably, there does not seem to be the same response or concern (for ships an their crew members).”
The industry letter said “seafarers and the maritime sector are neutral and must not be politicised”.
“Given the continually evolving and severe threat profile within the area, we call on you for enhanced coo r d i n a t e d m i l i t a r y p r e s e n c e , missions and patrols in the region, to protect our seafarers against any further possible aggression,” the letter added.
Recent attacks on merchant shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have also affected the global maritime transport chain.
Iran has also seized other vessels in international waters in recent years, heightening risks for merchant shipping in the area.

Liner Shipping’s EU policy priorities for a sustainable, competitive, and secure maritime sector – World Shipping Council
BRUSSELS: The World Shipping Council (WSC) is calling on the EU to design policy frameworks that facilitate the essential role of shipping in a globally connected economy and to forge the path to net-zero shipping by 2050 in partnership with industry
Outlining its recommendations for the 2024-2029 legislative term, the WSC urges the EU to: Work to secure effective global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction regulations and implement the Green Deal to ensure that production of renewable marine fuels grows to match demand, to meet the target of decarbonising shipping by 2050.
Intensify efforts to secure maritime supply chains against illicit trafficking and geopolitical risks, while working together with industry to enhance the safety of seafarers and the resilience of trade routes.
Minimize customs and administrative barriers to ensure streamlined, efficient trade that will enhance Europe’s competitiveness.
“The shipping industry’s contributions are essential to Europe’s economic vitality, underpinning trade, supporting employment and ensuring the free flow of goods. We urge the EU to work with us in partnership to
safeguard a sustainable, competitive and secure maritime sector,” President and CEO John Butler said.
Liner shipping is leading the maritime sector effort to decarbonise, with nearly 60% of new vessels to be delivered before 2030 designed to run on the greenest marine fuels. The EU has an important role to play for the development of effective and efficient global climate regulations at the International Maritime Organisation by 2025. WSC is also urging the EU to implement the EU ETS and FuelEU to ensure that the full climate impact of fuels is taken into account, and so that production of renewable fuels scales to meet fleet demand.
On safety and security, the liner shipping industry recognises its critical role in keeping the flow of goods through Europe’s maritime supply safe and secure To that end, the EU should in the new legislative period enhance partnerships within the EU Ports Alliance against drug trafficking, adapt and respond to new geopolitical risks, and improve sanctions compliance through collaborative frameworks. The EU should foster public-private partnerships to leverage the combined expertise to bolster maritime supply chains for a safer, more resilient future.
Global freight, insurance, crew wages to spike as Israel attacks Iran: Shippers
NEW YORK: Global shipping freight, insurance and crew wages will likely increase significantly in the near term after Israel launched a retaliatory missile attack on Iranian soil but ongoing loadings are likely to carry on as usual, market participants said recently
“From the information we have as of now, the current loadings are going on in key oil [and refined products] producing countries but the situation is very fluid,” a shipping broker in Singapore said. As it is a Friday — a designated public holiday in most Persian Gulf countries — the chartering of ships or lack of it will depend on the scale of the conflict, market sources said.
Sources in refining companies across South Korea said that higher freight for importing cargoes from the Middle East is now a bigger concern as opposed to security issues.
It all depends on how extensive was the attack on Iran, another broker said.
“The Persian Gulf loadings will not be affected so quickly and will probably depend on the scale of Iran’s retaliation,” an executive at a major oil tanker-owning company said. But, he added, the company will seek higher freight for voyages from the region.
It is the prerogative of the management of the tanker companies to decide on offering ships for loading in the Persian Gulf and announcements of any decision will be done by them, a source with another owner said.
Most market participants pointed out that the Ukraine-Russia conflict is a 24×7 full time war and unless hostilities in the Persian Gulf reach such a stage, trade flows will carry on but become much more expensive as several crew members will either seek higher wages or
will be reluctant to serve in voyages in a conflict zone.
East of Suez Long Range freight continued its rising streak for the fifth successive trading session April 18 to reach its highest in over two weeks due to tight supply, particularly for LR2s, market participants said.
It is the Additional War Risk Premia, or AWRP, which will increase manifold in the next few days, industry sources said.
For the last few months, the AWRP in the Red Sea has been 0.5%-1.0% of the value of the hull and machinery of the ship varying with age and size, compared with 0.0001% in the Persian Gulf, they added.
Any blockage on the Straits of Hormuz will result in importers dipping into their strategic reserves and panic buying from West Africa and the US, a VLCC broker said.
Japan’s second largest refiner Idemitsu Kosan was considering procuring crude oil from West Africa and North America as alternative supply sources for potential Middle East supply disruptions, President and CEO Shunichi Kito said April 17, following the rise in tensions between Iran and Israel.
The Persian Gulf and the Red Sea regions have close to 40% share in global oil exports with more than 20 million barrels, equivalent to 10 VLCCs of oil and refined products, and over 10 Bcf of LNG move daily through the Strait of Hormuz alone, according to shipping industry estimates.
During the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, only 20% of the global tanker fleet lifted cargoes from the region and that too in blackout conditions, while wages of seafarers doubled, a navigator who sailed such tankers then told S&P Global Commodities Insights earlier this week.

APM Terminals : A committed partner to Governments & Communities, says Jon Goldner, Chief Executive Asia and Middle East
THE HAGUE: Our office in Singapore is right at the junction of global trade. Every year, about 140,000 vessels call the port heading from Asia to all parts of the world. And of course, we have Tanjung Pelepas located right across the border in Malaysia.
I cannot help but think that the upcoming years will be some of the most exciting for APM Terminals when it comes to investing in and developing new opportunities across the region. This is true from a business and customer perspective, but also because we aspire to help countries make their supply chains more resilient and to provide opportunities for the communities and people where we operate.
I get real energy when I visit the countries where we do business. It is evident that trade patterns are shifting due to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical conditions. And we experience that many industries are rewiring their supply chains to reduce risk and add resilience in their operations. This means we rethink our business too.
When companies and countries look at opportunities to improve trade and resilience throughout Asia and the Middle East, we as a terminal operator want to help them succeed – with smooth, efficient operations and first-class infrastructure around the terminals and ports. And by connecting them to the rest of the world through our network and our close ties to Maersk and our many other shipping-line customers.
Asia in focus
Southeast Asia in particular is among the biggest winners from the structural changes in trade Consequently, the IMF expects Southeast Asia’s five largest economies—Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand—to be the fastest-growing bloc in the world by trade volumes between 2022 and 2027.
India and Bangladesh are also expected to benefit from this trend. Many of the countries in the region are looking for help to improve their supply chain resilience and carbon footprint. And we want to play an active role to support them on that journey We already have some great examples of how to do it from our current portfolio – e.g. from our cooperation with India and our terminals in both Mumbai and Pipavav
Empowering communities
Let me give you a deep dive into some of our learnings from APM Terminals Pipavav Our research shows us that our port plays a significant role in creating new opportunities for many people. Pipavav has directly improved the financial footing, raised education levels, and contributed to social well-being and empowerment for many people in the area.
From my own point of view, I have loved to witness the transformation in Pipavav, where we have operated since 2009 and have invested in both education, upskilling, new infrastructure, and a sustainable transition.
The port is a well-connected piece in the puzzle to expand connectivity to the country's northwestern part with rail via the Direct Freight Corridor Earlier this year, we signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) at Vibrant Gujarat Summit to develop a green hydrogen ecosystem and to continue our efforts to build a 100% green value chain.
Female empowerment
Female empowerment is one of our core focus areas. As part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives actioned by APM Terminals Pipavav, we have trained more than 2500 youths to date, including around 1000 are women, through the Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Institute at Rajula We have also hired 11 women from the local community, as trainees in various
departments, to create a diverse talent pipeline in Pipavav
Our engagement and results in Pipavav show our commitment to creating sustainable supply chain ecosystems and stewardship to enhance the livelihoods of those associated with our ports. Health and the transition from fossil fuels are closely linked.
Progress towards net-zero emissions
As we work towards our global industry-leading ambition to reach net zero by 2040, as part of the Gujarat Green Gateway project, a 1,000 kWp solar power grid was installed at Port Pipavav in 2022. The port receives its electricity from solar power, which also lights the streets. Solar power, which now supplies up to 10% of the port's overall energy usage, has helped to cut emissions by almost 1,100 tons per year by lowering the amount of energy used for facility and street lighting by nearly half.
In 2023, a power purchase agreement was signed between APM Terminals Pipavav and Cleanmax for the provision of 2 MW of renewable energy. Honestly, I believe it is a privilege to get to experience the positive impact we can make with a clear roadmap ahead.
Since 2022, we have invested USD 115 million in infrastructure to increase container handling capacity at APM Terminals Mumbai (GTI) by 10% to 2.18 million TEUs This was aimed at enabling the terminal to accommodate the needs for larger vessel capability and this year. This modernisation opens new opportunities for us in Mumbai.
Opportunities in Vietnam
These are some of our examples of how to develop sustainable and prosperous terminal operations. And we continue our journey This week, a delegation from the Vietnamese Ministry of Transportation visited our expanding automated terminal in Rotterdam, MVII, which runs on renewable electricity and with electric equipment.
This was another step in our efforts to support and share best practices with our partners in Vietnama country that will become increasingly important for global trade and we are humbled by the opportunity to play an active part in that development.
I’m also pleased to share that, at the beginning of the year, Denmark and Bangladesh entered into a Platform agreement to facilitate a concession agreement in Laldia, Bangladesh.
We also signed a memorandum of understanding with the intent to invest also in Vadhaven Port in India – and we are of course looking into how the services that we have developed in APM Terminals can support economic development and local communities and how to be the preferred partner to the governments that we serve. I believe there are multiple attractive opportunities across the region where we as APM Terminals can bring unique value.
We want to develop safe, efficient, and sustainable operations that have a direct positive impact on the community we operate in, building on our unique ties to Maersk. By doing so we can help connect that country and its people to the rest of the world. To me that is exciting and meaningful work.
