PIPAVAV : APM Terminals Pipavav is committed to strengthen landside infrastructure around the Port. To meet long pending customers’ requirements, APMT has partnered with Contrans Logistic to develop a state-of-the-art warehousing facility in the proximity of the port. The logistic park will offer modern warehousing facility and customized logistics solutions. The MMLP will support both International and domestic storage requirements and a bouquet of value-added services to customers. It offers connectivity with international and coastal shipping routes, access to the Indian rail network through the Dedicated Freight corridor [DFC] and connects to the evolving road network in Gujarat and the northern hinterland. Shri Sonowal said Maritime infrastructure plays a vital role in the nation’s economy. Aligning with the MaritimeIndiaVision2030,SagarmalaprojectofMoPSW is aimed at providing better facilities to the people in the coastal region. Shri Sonowal said in the state of Maharashtra, there are 114 projects worth Rs. 99,210 Crore under Sagarmala Programme. Out of the total 114 projects being implemented in the state of Maharashtra, 43 projects worth Rs. 2121 Crore are partially funded by MoPSW Hesaidoutof43projects,37projectsworthRs1,388Crore, 9 projects worth Rs 279 Crore have been completed, 17projectsworthRs666Croreareunderimplementation and 11 projects worth Rs 443 Crore are under developmentstage.

The Minister said the Sagarmala initiative has successfully enabled the Indian ports to handle large volumesbymakingthemmoreefficientandreducingthe turnaround time of containers He said numerous projects have been undertaken across various categories such as port modernization, rail, road, cruise tourism,RORO,ROPAX,fisheries,coastalinfrastructure and skill development He said currently under Sagarmala programme of MoPSW, 31 Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax projectsitselfareinthestateofMaharashtra.

Shri Sonowal said to celebrate the maritime activities of the coastal states of the country, ‘Coastal States Pavilion’ have been proposed to be developed in the National Maritime Heritage Complex He said accordingly for the state of Maharashtra, land area of 14,000 sq. ft. with construction area of 6,000- 8,000 sq. ft. has been identified in the periphery of the Coastal States Pavilion of the NMHC site. Sarbananda Sonowal chairs meeting of the Consultative Committee for the MoPSW

in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways & AYUSH chaired the meeting of the Consultative Committee for the MoPSW in Mumbai on 21.2.2023. The meeting was attended by Shri Arvind Sawant, MP, Shri Manoj Kotak, MPandSmt.GeethaVanga,MP.

Shri Sudhansh Pant, Secretary (Shipping) and senior officials of the MoPSW also attended the meeting along with Heads of MbPA, JNPA, DG Shipping, Cochin ShipyardLtd,DCIandSCI.

While inaugurating the meeting, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal stated that India intends to increase the share of renewal energy to 60 per cent of total power demand of each of its major ports from the present share of less than 10percent. TheMaritimeVisionDocument-2030 released by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, is a 10-year blueprint on India’s vision of asustainable Maritime Sector and vibrant blue economy and the Ministry has undertaken various green port initiatives in major ports, so that their environmentalissuesareaddressedproperly.

Thereafter, Shri Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Addl. Secretary, PSW, made a presentation on General Overview of the MoPSW and also a PPT on “Green Ports andGreenShipping”.

Shri Sudhansh Pant, Secretary Shipping, stated that the Ports have aimed to reduce carbon emissions, per tonne of cargo handled by 30 per cent by 2030 and initiated various activities that would help in reducing the greenhouse gases emissions from the port and shipping sector in order to achieve the targets set by the Government for making the maritime sector green and sustainable. Under Sagarmala programme, 160 projects costing Rs.10,901 crore have been identified in 12 States/UTs. These projects are being implemented by concerned Central Ministries, State Governments/Administrations, Portsandotheragencies.

To enhance the share of green shipping, various projects are being implemented by Cochin Shipyard Ltd., India’s largest ship building and maintenance facility. These include green urban mobility solutions like hybrid

electric ferries, autonomous zero-emission vessels, pilot project on hydrogen fuel cell ferry, electric catamaran water taxi, hybrid electric Ro-Ro, hybrid LNG-electric inland cargo carrier, hybrid tugs, etc. The initiatives include acquisition of equipment for monitoring environmental pollution, dustsuppression systems,STP’s garbage disposal system for ports and ships, reception facility for wastes from ships, projects for energy generation for renewable energy sources, Tier I Oil Spill Response and inclusion of sustainable practices in terminal design, development and Operation, increasing greencoverwithinportpremises,etc.

Smt.GeethaVanga,ShriArvindSawantandShriManoj Kotak raised the concerns of plastic on the environment issues and urged Shipping Ministry to implement robust environmentalprogrammes.

Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon’ble Minister for State for PSW in his address outlined the delegates attending the meeting on Ministry’s road map for achieving the targets. Chairman, MbPA and Chairman, JNPA clarified some of thedoubtsraisedbyhon’blemembers.

Concluding the meeting, the Hon’ble Minister stated that India would be able to complete the projects by 2035 andIndia will bethebase forproviding forsuch facilities in the Maritime Sector and would be inclusive of the suggestions given by the Hon’ble Members during the meeting.

Double Digit growth in exports is commendable amidst challenging global trade environment: Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO

MUMBAI: Speaking on the sidelines of FIEO's Foundation Dayrelated event, DrA Sakthivel, President, FIEO said that the aggregate exports of the country in the current fiscal is expected to be between US$ 780-800 billion exhibiting a growth of about 12% over the record exports of US$ 672 billion in2021-22.

A double-digit growth in exports, when the global situation is becoming tougher and global trade moderating, is encouraging particularly as many of our competing countries are witnessing sharp decline in their exports, observed FIEO Chief. Dr Sakthivel said that the merchandise exports are likely to be between US$ 440-450 billion while services exports are expected to be between US$340-350billion.

OTP-based digital locking soon for freight-package trains

NEW DELHI - The Indian Railways will soon introduce a digitallockingsystembasedonOTPtopreventtheftsonboard itsfreightandpackagetrains,aseniorofficialsaidrecently.

The system will, according to officials, solely rely on secure OTP, which will be used to unlock and close carriages. “Over the course of the travel, the goods will not be available. Without any interference, it will be opened by one OTP and shutbyanother.Allwedonowissealthetrainsandmakesure thesealisintactateverystation.Thiswillsignificantly lessen problemswhilethetrainisrunning,”anofficialdeclared.

Tomakesurethesystemfunctionsproperly,hestatedthat an employee of the railway will receive the OTP at each

stationwhereloadingorunloadingneedstobedone.

The official described the procedure, stating that an OTP is delivered to the involved personnel’s mobile number when the lock is closed. The motorist must push the lock’s button to confirm the position after arriving at the desired spot.

An additional OTP is provided to the driver’s cellphone number when the driver’s OTP is verified in order to open the lock.

Moreover, the location of the train will be tracked. An alarm message will be sent to the official’s mobile number if a door tamper or collision occurs.

Four more Ro-Ro services from Mumbai likely in next 18 months

MUMBAI - After the success of the Ro-Ro (roll on-roll off) service between Mumbai and Mandwa, four more services are expected to take off to Mora, Kashid, Dighi and Revas in the next 18 months. The announcement was made on Tuesday after ameeting between ChiefMinister Eknath Shinde and Union Ports, Shipping and WaterwaysMinisterSarbanandSonowal.

The projects are at various stages of the bidding and will be implemented with equal funding by the Centre and thestategovernmentunderSagarmalascheme.

Amit Saini, Chief Executive Officer, Maharashtra Maritime Board, said, “After we got a good response to the Mumbai-Mandva Ro-Ro service launched in September 2020, several operators came forward for more such services.Wealsowantedtoimprovewaterconnectivity.”

The tendering for these four projects is at various stages and “we expect to start at least three of them in the next one-and-a-half years”, he said. “The three services from Mumbai to Mora, Kashid and Dighi collectively cost aroundRs.200crore.”

The state government also requested the Centre for a pavilion of Maharashtra at National Maritime Heritage Complex in Gujarat’s Lothal which will be built at an estimatedcostofaroundRs.2,000crore.

“We expect the pavilion to exhibit the paintings related to the fleet of warships used in the era of Shivaji Maharaj. The State Government will help it in every possible manner,” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is quoted to have said.

The State and Central Government officials also discussed the reduction in VAT on bunker fuel. It has been demanded by the operators of passenger boat services. There was also a demand for the modernisation of passengerboats.

“It was a preliminary discussion and the boat owners have been directed to give a proposal for the upgradation of vessels. A call will be taken by the Government. The reduction in VAT on bunker fuel will help bring down the operation cost of these waterways’ services,” an official fromMantralayasaid.

Haifa Port is going to be Adani Ports’ biggest revenue generator outside India

HAIFA:Israel’sstrategicHaifaPort will be Adani Ports & SEZ’s (APSEZ) biggest revenue generator outside India,aseniorexecutivesaid.

APSEZ is also building an incubation centre at the port there which will be the biggest startup accelerator for the group, said the executive, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

India’s largest port operator is first focussedonthecitysidedevelopmentof the Haifa port, which would include the setting up of convention centres and hotelsapartfromtheincubationcentre, saidtheexecutive.

APSEZ is in talks with multiple partners including cruise operators to bolster tourist arrivals to the port, he added. It is also working closely with local municipal bodies to make the masterplan for city side development, he said. The company has 800 employees at the Haifa port including seniormanagementandportworkers.

APSEZ, in a 70:30 consortium with IsraelichemicalcompanyGadotGroup, had won the tender for privatising the

port at $1.18 billion. It took over the port inJanuary.

Haifa is the second largest port and one of the three major ports in Israel. Apartfromoperatingcontainercargo,it is the biggest hub for tourist cruises in the region. Over the years, Haifa has becomeincreasingly critical forIsrael’s thawing political relations with Gulf states, which have led to it harbouring ambitioustradetieswiththeregion.

“Strategically it is very well located. It is the eastern most harbour in the Mediterranean. Everyone wants to do economic activity there. There are future plans to connect the Middle East to the Mediterranean starting at UAE and concluding at Haifa via rail route, which will connect Saudi Arabia and Jordan on the rail corridor,” said the APSEZexecutive.

Haifa port also is strategically located for transhipment of cargo through the Mediterranean Sea through the UAE to ports in Europe. It provides an alternative route to the current more expensive one that goesviatheSuezCanal.

“Right now, every ship sailing through the Mediterranean has to pass through the Suez Canal. Prices keep going up. So, when the port is modernised and the railway connectivity is developed, it will reduce transit time and make an alternate gateway to Jordan, Saudi Arabia and theUAEandtoEurope,”headded.

Pramit Pal Chaudhury, Head of India practice at the Eurasia Group, said the alternative route and operations would increase efficiency of transportation by 60%.

Cargo railway lines are being planned to connect the UAE to Israel via Jordan and potentially Saudi Arabia, and Haifa would be integrated into the larger network. Last year, Chinese rival Shanghai International Port Group opened a containerterminaljustnextdoor.

APSEZ operates 13 ports in India and handles 24% of the country’s cargo. Earlier this year, it became the first Indian port operator to take over a Sri Lankan port.

Steel imports from Russia touch eight-year high in April-Jan

NEW DELHI - India’s imports of Russian steel rose to an eight-year high during the first 10 months of the financialyearthatbeganinApril2022, Government data compiled by Reutersshowed.

India, the world’s second-largest crude steel producer, imported 281,000 tonnes of steel from Russia between April and January, nearly five times higher than the same periodayearago,thedatashowed.

The rising imports are the result of a shift in Russian steel trade flows to Asia after Western sanctions were imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine last year. The change is displacing sometraditional suppliers, and domestic steel producers are raising concerns about potentially losing market share to the lower pricedimports

Moscow was the fourth-biggest steelsuppliertoIndiaduringtheApril

to January period, emerging as one of the top five steel exporters to the country for the first time since the 2016-17fiscalyear,thedatashowed.

Between April and January, about 72 per cent of Moscow’s steel shipments to India constituted hotrolledcoil(HRC)andstrips.

Russia developing North-South Corridor for business with India, Iran & Pakistan: Vladimir Putin

MOSCOW : President Vladimir Putin recently said Russia is developing the ambitious North-South Transport Corridor, which will open up new routes for business cooperation with India, Iran and Pakistan, as well as West Asian countries. In his one hour and 45 minutes State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly, Putin also said that Russia will expand promising international economic connections, as well as build new supply corridors, as the US-led West has imposed crippling sanctions for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine nearly one year ago.

“We will develop the ports of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, we will particularly focus on the North-South International Corridor,” Putin said, noting that it will open up new routes for business cooperation with India, Iran, Pakistan as well as West Asian countries.

“We will continue developing this corridor,” Putin was quoted as saying by the state-run Tass news agency.

“What areas should the state, regions, and local businesses focus their partnership work on? First, we will expand promising international economic connections and build new supply corridors,” he said in the speech days before the Ukraine war’s first anniversaryonFriday,17thFeb

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a 7,200-km-long multi-mode transport project

for moving freight among India, Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe.

The INSTC is India’s vision and initiative to reduce the time taken for export-import shipments to reach Russia and Europe, and enter the Central Asian markets.

During a visit to Yerevan in Armenia in October 2021, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar proposed that the strategic Chabahar Port in Iran be included in the North-South Transport Corridor that has the potential to bridge connectivity barriers.

The Chabahar port in the Sistan-Balochistan province in the energy-rich nation’s southern coast is easily accessible from India’s western coast and is increasingly seen as a counter to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port located at a distance of around 80 km from Chabahar.

The first phase of the Chabahar port was inaugurated in December 2017 by then-Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, opening a new strategic route connecting Iran, India and Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan.

The Chabahar port is being considered a gateway to golden opportunities for trade by India, Iran and Afghanistan with Central Asian countries, besides ramping up trade among the three countries in the wake of Pakistan denying transit access to New Delhi.
