NEW DELHI: With an aim to develop a regulatory framework and alternative technology adoption roadmap for Green Shipping to foster carbon neutrality and circular economy (CE) in the shipping sector in India, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal recently announced India’s first National Centre of Excellence for Green Port & Shipping (NCoEGPS) a major initiative by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping towards providinggreenersolutions.
Theannouncementwasmadebythe Union Minister at the recently concluded “INMARCO 2022” in Mumbai. “India intends to increase the shareofrenewableenergyto60percent of the total power demand of each of its major ports from a present share of less than 10 per cent. This will be through solar and wind-generated power,” read anofficialstatement.
Speaking on the occasion, Union MinisterShriSarbanandaSonowalsaid, “Itismyimmensepleasuretoannounce the establishment of India’s first centre of excellence for Green Port and Shipping as a major attempt by the Ministry towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s Mission LiFEmovement.AsperthevisionofPM Modi Ji, this movement is going to be an India-ledglobalmovementforcollective action to protect & preserve Enviornment.”
Adding that the new centre is an important step towards this movement as it aims to transform ports and shipping turn more Enviornment friendly, hesaid,
“The Deendayal Port Authority Kandla, Paradip Port Authority, Paradip, V.O Chidambaranar Port Authority, Thoothukudi and Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi have all extended their support to the Ministry to set up this centre. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is the knowledge and implementation partner forthisproject.“ThisCentrewillhelpon policy and regulatory support to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for developing regulatory framework and alternate technology adoptionroadmapforGreenShippingto foster carbon neutrality and circular economy (CE) in shipping sector in India.Ithankallthestakeholdersofthis project for hedging their resources towards a very important aspect of the sector,”headded.
The ports have also aimed to reduce Carbon emissions per ton of cargo handled by 30% by 2030. The Maritime Vision Document 2030, released by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is a 10 Year blueprint on India’s vision of a sustainable Maritime sector and vibrant blue economy. India has been selected as the first country under the IMO Green Voyage 2050 project to conduct a pilot project related to Green Shipping.
India will also be implementing IMO energy efficiency requirements for existing ships and carbon intensity requirements on all its vessels whether coastal or international in order to help achieve IMO GHG reduction targets. India is already supplying shore power to ships with a power demand of less than 150 KW at present and targeting to
supply shore power to all visiting ships. India is working actively at Marine Environmental Protection Committee of IMO to help devise acceptable regulatory requirements for GHG emission reduction in line with IMO GHGinitialstrategy.
“India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement for the Period 2021-2030 include: to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33 to 35 per cent by 2030 from 2005 level, and to achieve about 40 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030 with the help of transfer of technology and low-cost international finance,” addedthestatement
“The NCoEGPS will be working under the framework of the Sagarmala programme of the MoPSW. The main objective of the proposed NCoEGPS is to provide support to MoPSW in developingandmaintainingapolicyand regulatory framework for a green alternative technologies roadmap for the shipping sector in India for its transition to carbon neutrality and CE principles,”addedthestatement.

NEW DELHI: Over 250 critical infrastructure projects of different ministries including rail, road and ports have been examined and recommended by the Network Planning Group (NPG), constituted under the PM Gati Shakti initiative, since lastOctober, acommerceandindustryministryofficialsaid.
On October 13, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the Gati Shakti – National Master Plan aimed at developingintegratedinfrastructuretoreducelogisticcosts.
All logistics and connectivity infrastructure projects, entailing investment of over Rs 500 crore, are routed through theNPG,constitutedunderthePMGatiShaktiinitiative.
“Over 250 infrastructure projects have been examined in the last one year by using the National Master Plan and the PMGatiShaktiinstitutionalstructure.Theseprojectsinclude many connectivity linkages of rail, port, road, and last mile infrastructure projects for sectors such as agriculture, food, steel, andcoal,”theofficialsaid.
Use of the National Master Plan (NMP) portal is helping thecentralandstategovernmentscuttimeandcostofcritical infrastructureprojects.
Unforeseen disruptions will be reduced now due to use of theportal.AccesstotheportalisrestrictedtotheGovernment authorities. It is used for identification of critical gaps and planning of projects. So far, over 26 states have integrated differentcategoriesofdatawiththisportal.
The NPG has representations from various connectivity infrastructureministries/departmentsinvolvingtheirheadsof network planning division for unified planning and integration of the proposals. All these departments approach the NPG first for approval before making a DPR (detailed project report) at the planning stage. After the NPG’s clearance, the project follows the normal procedure of approval by the finance ministryandtheCabinet, dependingupontheproject.
For example, if the railway is planning a project on a specified route, by putting the relevant information on the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan portal before finalising the DPR, it can see whether the proposed track is crossing throughpubliclandorprivatepropertyorhighways.
Over 1,800 layers of data, including that of land, ports, forestsandhighways, areavailableontheportal.
HAMBURG: Digital adoption challenges leading to a lack of transparency, visibility and trust emerge as three key struggles for container logistic companies to book shipperowned containers according to a survey by Container xChange, an online platform for container logistics and operations.
To examine the pain points of the current state of ocean freight booking, Container xChange joined hands with the Copenhagen Business School and surveyed with 137 freight forwardersandNVOCCsspreadacrosstheglobe.
While the majority of freight forwarders shippers and NVOCCs use online quotation solutions, 83% find the need for better digital infrastructure in the future, pointing to digital vessel schedules and intuitive booking interfaces as the most impactfuldigitaltransformationsintimestocome.
Christian Roeloffs, Co-Founder and CEO of
ContainerxChange, shared that, “Lack of transparency and standardized digital processes has fueled inefficiency and mistrust for a very long time in the logistics industry. These struggles are further worse for shipper-owned containers where no carrier takes care of processes. This hinders the adoption of SOCs in the market. The survey corroborates with the state of the industry at present, but it is encouraging to understand how so many players are looking forward to Digital vesselschedulesandintuitivebookinginterfaceforinstance.”
“With the adoption of digital tools, all of this could be streamlined in a manner that there is a standardized procedure for all users. With digitization being at the crux of the whole booking cycle, the industry could become more efficient with streamlined vessel schedules, intuitive booking process, avoid scammers and gain trust in counterparties withvettedpartners.”Roeloffsadded.
