India to become the Global epicentre of blue economy: Sarbananda Sonowal

VISAKHAPATNAM: Marking a significant milestone in India’s progression towards blue economy, the Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said that India stands poised as the driving force shaping the next chapter in South Asia’s maritime history, evolving into the global epicentre of the blue economy.

He delivered a special address (virtually) at a pre-event roadshow of GMIS 2023 held at Visakhapatnam. Being a precursor to the upcoming Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS) 2023, the event spotlighted the strategic significance of fostering maritime growth and connectivity in the region.

India and Bangladesh strengthen Customs Cooperation and Trade Facilitation

NEW DELHI : India and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering customs cooperation and streamlining cross-border trade.

The two countries concluded their 14th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting in New Delhi on 21-22 August.

“The 14th JGC meeting discussed a host of bilateral issues such as opening of new land customs stations, easing port restrictions, development of road and rail infrastructure, pre-arrival exchange of customs data and a bilateral agreement on customs cooperation,” the Finance Ministry said.

CONCOR’s Mysuru MultiModal Logistics Park nearing completion

MYSORE: CONCOR (Container Corporation of India) is in the process of building a Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP) within the Kadakola Industrial area of Mysuru. The primary objective of this project is to cater to the needs of different goods manufacturing units situated in the vicinity. Additionally, it aims to stimulate industrial development by drawing in fresh investments.

The MMLP facility at Kadakola is equipped with an independent goods train terminal and a dedicated rail line designed to facilitate the efficient movement of goods into and out of the logistics park. This strategic feature is intended to enhance the project’s appeal to exporters, making it an attractive choice for them.

As the completion of the project nears, the Mysuru region anticipates a breath of fresh air in its saturated industrial landscape. Lacking a nearby sea port or airport, the process of exporting goods from the area has proven to be quite burdensome, relying on congested roads and truck transport. This situation has driven up export costs and acts as a significant obstacle to new investments.

The establishment of an ICD/MMLP at Kadakola will eliminate these export challenges. The complex will include a comprehensive customs office, streamlining the customs clearance process. Exporters only need to containerize their goods, obtain customs clearance, affix a QR code to the container. The MMLP operator will handle the storage, and forwarding,effectivelyoutsourcingthesetasks

This shift saves manufacturers a substantial amount of time and effort. Instead of investing resources in non-valueadding tasks, they can focus on their core businesses, boosting overall efficiency

India set to ban sugar exports for first time in seven years

NEW DELHI: India is expected to ban mills from exporting sugar in the next season beginning October, halting shipments for the first time in seven years, as a lack of rain has cut cane yields, three government sources said.

India's absence from the world market would be likely to increase benchmark prices in New York and London that are already trading around multi-year highs, triggering fears of further inflation on global food markets.

"Our primary focus is to fulfil local sugar requirements and produce ethanol from surplus sugarcane," said a government source who asked not to be named in line with official rules. "For the upcoming season, we will not have enough sugar to allocate for export quotas."

India allowed mills to export only 6.1 million tonnes of sugar during the current season to Sept. 30, after letting them sell a record 11.1 million tonnes last season.

In 2016, India imposed a 20% tax on sugar exports to curb overseas sales.

Monsoon rains in the top cane growing districts of the western state of Maharashtra and the southern state of Karnataka - which together account for more than half of India's total sugar output - have been as much as 50% below average so far this year, weather department data showed

India surprised buyers last month by imposing a ban on non-basmati white rice exports. New Delhi also imposed a 40% duty last week on exports of onions as it tries to calm food prices ahead of state elections later this year

A Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house said lower output in Thailand was also expected to reduce shipments and major producer Brazil would alone not be able to fill the gap.

India and Bangladesh strengthen Customs Cooperation and Trade Facilitation

The India-Bangladesh Joint Group of Customs meetings are held on an annual basis to discuss issues relating to customs cooperation and cross-border trade facilitation These meetings play a vital role in enhancing connectivity and developing trade infrastructure for smooth customs clearance at land borders, it added.

There are 62 land customs stations (which include land border crossing points, railway stations and river banks/ports) along the India-Bangladesh Border in the States of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

According to the ministry, several trade facilitative measures have been undertaken by India in this context recently such as enabling exports from Bangladesh to India by rail in closed containers, with customs clearance facility at any Inland Container Depot (ICD) vide Circular dated 17th May 2022. This would also help decongest the border trade points. India has facilitated cargo exports from its ICDs to Bangladesh using Inland Waterways, following the circular dated 09 September 2022.

Drewry: Container Port Throughput Index up 2.4% in June

L O N D O N : T h e D r e w r y Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of calendar adjusted volume growth/decline indices based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 340 ports worldwide, representing over 80% of global volumes. The base point for the indices is January 2019 = 100.

Drewry has developed a nowcasting model that uses vessel capacity and terminal duration data (derived from our proprietary AIS model) to make short-term predictions of port throughput. Drewry’s latest assessment – August 2023

• The MoM rise in Greater China volumes, alongside smaller contributions from Asia (excl. China), the Middle East and South Asia, Africa and Europe, more than offset the decrease in volumes in North America and led to a 2.4% MoM increase in the Global Container Port Throughput Index in June 2023 The index is now at 110.8 points, 1.3% below June 2022.

• Drewry’s Nowcast Model indicates that the Global Port Throughput Index will have fallen 4.3% MoM in July 2023 to 106.1 points.

• The Greater China Container Port Throughput Index surged 5 2% MoM in June 2023 to 117 6 points, representing a rise of 3.0% YoY. Shanghai and Ningbo had a good June, up 1% and 2% MoM respectively Overall, Greater China has seen volumes for 1H23 being 3% ahead of 2022. The Pearl River Delta ports of Hong Kong and Shenzhen have continued to slide, down 15% and 6% YoY respectively for 1H23.

• The North American Container Port Throughput Index decreased slightly by 0.9% MoM in June 2023,

to 101.2.Volume losses have not been confined to the strike-impacted West Coast ports, with East Coast ports of New York, Savannah, Norfolk and Montreal also showing 10-25% YoY falls for 1H23, similar in scale to those experienced at Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles and Long Beach Only the Gulf ports seem to have held up, with Houston down a mere 2% in 1H23 andNewOrleansshowinga10%increaseover2022

• The European Container Port Throughput Index increased 0 4% MoM in June 2023, rising to 100 7 points, but remained 5.1% below last year’s number. The Spanish ports of Barcelona and Valencia stand out with particularly weak numbers, as volumes at both ports were down over 10% YoY in 1H23

India seeks duty removal on 90% exports to Asean

NEW DELHI: The Government is trying to get Asean nations to eliminate duties on nearly 90% of the goods exported from the country as it seeks to balance trade volumes and bring the 13-year-old treaty in line with 'more modern agreements'.

Earlier this week, India and the 10-nation bloc agreed to New Delhi's long-pending demand for a review, which the government believes is crucial to ensure that two trading partners have strong ties. Since the agreement was signed, India's trade deficit with Asean has shot up from around $5 billion in 2010-11 to $43.6 billion in 2022-23, a rise of 8.7 times. During this period, trade has increased 2.3 times to $131.6 billion, reflecting the asymmetry between growth in imports and exports.

Under the agreement, each Asean member had agreed to a different level of tariff elimination and India wants them -

especially the higher income countries - to commit to greater opening-up given that free trade agreements with Australia and the UAE have seen tariffs eliminated on over 90% goods. Besides, India wants product specific restrictions imposed by Asean members withdrawn, as is the case with certain types of steel. Besides, the government is insisting that countries rework rules of origin as the current regime is seen to be porous and allows Chinese goods to be routed via third countries. Violations in goods such as set-top boxes from Vietnam, tin ingots from Malaysia, cold rolled stainless steel flat products, and cocoa of Ghana origin from Malaysia, have been reported by authorities.

While the services sector is not explicitly on the agenda, the government is also going to seek greater opening-up as some Asean members have refused to honour their obligations after pocketing the benefits on the goods side.

Adani Group EBITDA grows 42% in rst quarter, reaches Rs 23,532 Cr

A H M E DA B A D : B i l l i o n a i r e Gautam Adani‘s conglomerate clocked a 42 per cent year-on-year growth in pre-tax profit, as businesses ranging from airports to power and sea ports registered impressive growth, the group said.

All-time high EBITDA of Rs 23,532 crore in April-June was almost equal to the full-year FY19 (April 2018 to March 2019 fiscal year) EBITDA of Rs 24,780 crore, Adani Group said in a statement.

The conglomerate that spans 10 listed companies ranging from flagship incubator Adani Enterprises Ltd to ports business (Adani Ports & S E Z L t d ) , r e n e w a b l e u n i t ( A d a n i G r e e n E n e r g y L t d ) , power utility (Adani Power Ltd), e l e c t r i c i t y t r a n s m i s s i o n f i r m (Adani Energy Solutions), and city gas business (Adani Total Gas Ltd), had a net debt of Rs 18,689.7 crore

after accounting for a cash balance of Rs 42,115 crore.

Core infrastructure and utility platform, which generates stable and assured cash flows, generated EBITDA of Rs 20,233 crore, accounting for 86 per cent of the total portfolio EBITDA.

“This gives a high level of stability a n d m u l t i - d e c a d a l e a r n i n g s predictability and visibility Therobust profits haveresulted in the portfolio gaining a very strong liquidity position,” it said.

SMP Kolkata to start regular Cargo movement through Bangladesh

KOLKATA: The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata will very soon start regular cargo movement to the Northeastern States through Bangladesh, a senior official said on Wednesday, 23rd August. According to an agreement between the two neighbouring countries, M u l t i - m o d a l T r a n s i t o r Transshipment of goods is permitted on eight routes.

Goods arriving from India at Chittagong and Mongla Ports can be sent to Agartala via Akhaura in Bangladesh, to Dawki in Meghalaya via Tamabil in Sylhet, Sutarkandi in Assam via Sheola, and Srimantapur in Tripura via Bibir Bazar in Comilla, and vice versa.

“Very soon we are going to start regular operations to Northeastern States through Bangladesh. For that

the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is already in talks with the Customs authorities and the Ministry of External Affairs,” SMP Deputy Chairman (Kolkata) Samrat Rahi said.

The Kolkata Port, which achieved a total cargo volume of 65.66 million metric tonne in the financial year 2022-23, has set a target of 70 million metric tonne in 2023-24, the official said.

Stating that SMP is trying to improve logistics and storage facilities so that better solutions can be given to businesses, he said the

port trust is taking up several projects for capacity augmentation and for improvement of key capacity indicators.

The capacity of the port is likely to be doubled in four-five years with the completion of the mechanisation of facilities, he said.

The SMP is coming up with a new terminal project at Balagarh, 85 km upstream of Hooghly river, for providing easy access to cargo for the northeastern states, he added.

“Along with this, we also have the proposal for night navigation facilities so that vessels coming to and going from Kolkata can be doubled in numbers,” Rahi said.

A logistic park will come up on 60 acre land in Kolkata with all modern facilities, and it will be a boon to the logisticssectorofthestate,he said.

Suez Canal set to resume normal traffic after collision

CAIRO: Normal traffic is expected to resume through the Suez Canal within hours, the Head of the Canal Authority said on Wednesday, 23rd August following the collision of two vessels "Slight contact" was made after liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier BW Lesmes made a sudden stop due to a technical failure that coincided with a strong current that drove oil tanker Burri towards it, Authority Chairman Osama Rabie said.

The Authority responded by sending tugboats to move both ships, he said.

Singapore-flagged BW Lesmes was successfully towed outside of the waterway, Rabie said, while Cayman Islands-flagged Burri could be seen approaching the southern end of the canal as of 12:00 pm local time, a

The canal's north convoy will resume once Burri is towed, Rabie said.
