NEW DELHI: Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said that India has activated the Vladivostok-Chennai shipping route and is now plans to to connect at least two other east coast ports—Paradip and Vizag—with this maritime corridor Petroleum and LNG are the two key products that are currently coming in from Russia, while Indian exports to it includes textiles, engineering goods and machine parts primarily.
“We have started the Vladivostok-Chennai route sometime back. And it is picking up among exporters. The plan going forward is to connect other eastern ports like Paradip and Vizag as part of this corridor, thereby making it more viable for exporters,” the minister said on the sidelines of Sagarmanthan—a maritime conference organised by the ministry and Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
India is also exploring the possibility of using this route for shipping coking coal from both Mongolia and Russia.
Travel time
The Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor primarily connects India’s southeastern coast to Russia’s Far East. Although considered as a costly route, the 5,600 nautical miles (10300) km route is expected to reduce travel time between the two countries by 50 per cent. The normal travel time on this route is said to be 10–12 days at normal cruising speed and around 12–14 days at slower speeds.
Possible Alternative
In view of the current Red Sea crisis, and increased
travel time, which has also pushed up costs, the Vladivostok-Chennai maritime corridor is seen as a possible alternative.
“The Red Sea route now takes 48 days or say, against which Vladivostok route will be 15 days max. So in terms of cost, there will be some benefits accruing to exporters,” another MoPSW official said.
The Red Sea route accounts for 50 per cent of Indian exports and 30 per cent of imports. Domestic companies use the Red Sea route through the Suez Canal to trade with Europe, North American, Africa and also Middle East.
“We will also tap into other alternate routes such as INSTC and India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEEC). Work is currently underway on IMEEC too,” Minister Sonowal said. The India-UAE leg of the corridor is being worked on, which includes getting the software logistics in place for trial runs.
Cementing terms
He said his Ministry was working on cementing the terms set by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in government talks with Greece, which holds a significant portion of global maritime activity.
“By tonnage, Greece has the top of the ship-owning capicity,” Sonowal told reporters at Sagarmanthan.
The government is also focusing on modernising ports to facilitate exports, Sonowal said, adding that construction on India’s largest port, in Vadhawan, has begun. It will have a cargo handling capacity of 300 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), he said.
NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, had a bilateral meeting with his Greek counterpart Christos Stylianides on Monday, 18th November wherein they discussed the operationalisation of the ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor
During the meeting, Sonowal also invited Greek shipping companies to play a significant role in its shipbuilding industry The meeting was held on the sidelines of ORF’s Sagarmanthan, the Great Oceans Dialogue.
The discussion touched on the IMEC, which was agreed upon during the G20 summit last year.
Talking to reporters following the meeting, Sonowal said: “We had a discussion on IMEC. The IMEC corridor was decided during the G20 meeting last year. We will take all the steps required to operationalize [it].”
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is a new trade route connecting India, the Middle East, and Europe. Announced in 2023, it aims to improve trade, transport, and communication between these regions through a network of railways and sea routes. The project is designed to make trade faster and more efficient, boosting economic ties and reducing reliance on longer routes.
Praising Greece’s global stature in the shipping industry, Sonowal expressed India’s interest in fostering Greek investments.
” We have welcomed Greek m
Sagarmanthan. We are building on the agenda set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart during their bilateral meeting,” Sonowal noted. “In the shipping sector, Greece has a leadership. We want Greece companies to operate in India and play an important role in the shipbuilding sector,” he stated. Stylianides also shared a positive outlook on the meeting, emphasizing their shared goals amidst global geopolitical shifts and the importance of practical initiatives that benefit both nations.
He remarked, “After the excellent meetings between our ministers and our Prime Ministers, we found practical initiatives and decided to collaborate, especially in shipping and maritime affairs.”
Earlier this year in February, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis
During his visit to India, Mitsotakis asserted that despite the Israeli war in Gaza “destabilising” plans for the IndiaMiddle East Economic Corridor (IMEC), India and Greece should persevere with the “peace project”.
“The war in Gaza and turmoil in the Middle East is undoubtably destabilising but it does not undermine the powerful logic behind IMEC. Nor should it weaken our resolve to work towards realising it,” Mitsotakis had told a gathering of international delegates at the conference organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
CHENNAI: The Government is evaluating the implementation of minimum import price (MIP) on select textile products following a significant surge in imports that h a s i m p a c t e d d o m e s t i c manufacturers.
The Textiles Ministry’s current assessment focuses on six key products, including viscose rayon yarn and woven fabric of polyester, with China being a primary source of these imports.
Recent data indicates substantial growth in textile imports during April-August of the current fiscal year Flax imports witnessed a 78.7 per cent year-on-year increase, while viscose r a y o n y a r n i m p o r t s r o s e b y 10 per cent.
Notably, fabrics coated with
polyurethane experienced a 28.8 per cent growth during the same period. Industry analysis reveals that China dominates the supply chain for several textile products.
The country accounts for 99 per cent of India’s viscose rayon yarn imports, valued at USD 133.79 million, and 93 per cent of man-made fibre pile fabrics imports during the first five months of FY25.
The trade deficit with China reached USD 40 81 billion during April-August 2024-25.
The government’s initiative follows its recent decision to extend the MIP of USD 3.5 per kg on synthetic knitted fabrics until December 31, encompassing eight additional categories including printed, bleached, unbleached, and
This temporary measure aims to protect domestic industry fr0m predatory pricing and maintain competitive local prices.
While China remains the primary source for coated fabrics of plastics and polyurethane, commanding 68 per cent and 52 per cent market share respectively, European nations like Belgium and France lead in flax supplies.
Bangladesh dominates the export of cotton shorts and trouser bib and brace overalls to India, holding an 81 per cent market share.
manufacturers to assess local production capacity and identify areas requiring protection.
NEW DELHI: With 21 of the top 30 sectors recording growth in value terms, India’s merchandise exports continued their upward trajectory from April to October, driven by an increase in demand for Indian goods worldwide.
The total improvements were aided by development in important industries like engineering goods, electronics, and pharmaceuticals, while historically robust industries like petroleum and gems and jewelry saw a steep decrease amid slow economic growth in
developed nations
According to current patterns, India may export $435 billion worth of goods in FY2025. In order to overcome new hurdles and maintain growth, it continued, “current trade data h i g h l i g h t s a m i x e d e
t performance, calling for focused a
markets.”
From April to October, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Singapore, China, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany, and Australia
were the top ten countries to which India exported goods.
In 2024, geopolitical tensions and e c o n o m i c u p h e a v a l s disproportionately affected India’s trade dynamics, as global events increased costs and resonated across supply chains.
While the protracted conflict between Russia and Ukraine kept crude oil prices high, reducing margins for importers, Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea increased freight charges and interrupted vital trading routes.
NEW DELHI: Negotiations for all the proposed free trade agreements, including those with the UK and E u r o p e a n U n i o n ( E U ) , a r e progressing as per the schedule and the country's FTAs are not paused, a top government official has said.
T h e o f f i c i a l s a i d t h a t a n impression is going around that FTAs are paused, which is not correct.
"All our FTAs, whether it is with the EU or UK, all are progressing as per the schedule," the official said.
In the coming weeks, a bilateral meeting is scheduled between the
Director-General of the European Union to take stock of the negotiations for the proposed trade agreement with the European Union.
They will also meet as part of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC).
Besides the EU and the UK, India is negotiating these agreements with Australia, Peru, Sri Lanka, and Oman.
In such pacts, two trading partners either significantly cut customs duties or remove the maximum number of goods traded between them.
They also ease norms to promote trade in ser vices and a
investments.
India has so far implemented FTAs with a number of nations including Japan, Korea, Singapore, and the UAE.
According to the commerce m i n i s t r y, t h e n e x t r o u n d o f negotiations for the proposed free trade agreement between I n d i a a n d S o u t h A m e r i c a n nation Peru will be held after f i n a l i s a t i o n o f t h e F T A strategy.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vizhinjam International Port is getting ready for commissioning next month, with the state govt to decide on the date soon.
The authorities are more or less ready for the formal commissioning, but operational activities are being fine-tuned and tweaked to speed up docking ships and to handle containers faster.
Sources said the port recently handled three ships almost back to back and that simultaneous docking of two ships in the two berths has also begun.
When the staff, the control room and the procedures are prepared, the port will be able to move containers from ship to port and then to feeder vessels.
The port now gets one ship every alternate day and handles around 2,000 containers on average every day “We are already working to our maximum capacity as per the demand,” an official said.
In Oct, the port received around 23 ships. The number will exceed in Nov. Most of the work for the formal commissioning of the port is completed and the yard work is nearing completion, he added.
Now, two ships—MV MSC Shristi and MV MSC Patnaree III—are at the berths.
The port handled more than 50 ships and close to 1 lakh containers in the last four and a half months after trials began with the arrival of the mothership MV San Fernando.

COPENHAGEN: As the first large vessel in the industry, the container ship Maersk Halifax has been converted into a dual-fuel vessel able to operate on methanol The retrofit operation was conducted at the Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China over 88 days with completion at the end of October 2024.
“We are happy to announce that Maersk Halifax successfully has been retrofitted into a dual-fuel methanol vessel. Following the completion of the seatrials, Maersk Halifax has returned to operation and is now servicing our customers on the Trans-Pacific trade,” said, Leonardo Sonzio, Head of Fleet Management and Technology at Maersk.
The engine conversion has been done by MAN Energy Solutions. Besides replacing machine parts and thereby making the engine able to operate on methanol, the retrofit operation at the yard has involved adding new fuel tanks, fuel preparation room and fuel supply system. The hull has also been expanded to accommodate the fuel tanks. With this change, the length of the ship was extended by 15 meters to 368 meters, increasing the capacity from around 15,000 to 15,690 TEU.
“Since we set the ambitious climate goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2040, we have explored the potential in retrofitting existing vessels with dual-fuel engines. In the coming year, we will take learnings from this first conversion of a large vessel. Retrofits of existing vessels can be an important alternative to newbuilds in our transition from fossil fuels to low-emission fuels,” said, Leonardo Sonzio, Head of Fleet Management and Technology at Maersk.
Maersk Halifax, which is one of 11 vessels in Maersk’s Hong Kong-class, departed anchorage at the yard on 4 November 2024.
