NEW DELHI: The Government has permitted exports of 2,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to two African nations - Malawi and Zimbabwe. The export is permitted through National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said in a notification.
Though exports of non-basmati white rice have been banned since July 20, 2023 to boost domestic supply, exports are allowed on the basis of p
t h e government to certain countries to meet their food security needs on request.
Malawi is a landlocked country in
Zimbabwe is a South African nation.
According to the notification, exports of 1,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice were allowed to each of the countries.
"Exports of non-basmati white rice to Malawi and Zimbabwe though NCEL is notified," the DGFT said.
MUMBAI: There has never been a better time to be an Indian, and within the next decade, India will start adding a trillion dollars to its GDP every 12 to 18 months, putting us on track to be a $30 trillion economy by 2050, Gautam Adani, the Chairman of the Adani Group, said recently Delivering the keynote at the Crisil Ratings‘ ‘Annual Infrastructure Summit‘, Gautam Adani said it took India 58 years to get to its first trillion dollars of GDP , 12 years to get to the next trillion and just five years for the third trillion. “Given the pace at which India is growing and the way the government has been executing social
and economic reforms, I anticipate that within the next decade, India will start adding a trillion dollars to its GDP every 12 to 18 months,” the Adani GroupChairmantoldthegathering.
This will put us well on track to be a $30 trillion economy by 2050. At this time, I expect the stock market capitalisation to have exceeded $40 trillion. What this effectively means is that over the next 26 years, India will potentially add $36 trillion to its stock market capitalisation,” Gautam Adani said.
Currently, the Indian stock market capitalisation is over $5 trillion “No other nation is remotely close to
such a scale of possibility There has never been a better time to be Indian,” said the Adani Group Chairman. He said, “India’s infrastructure industry is undergoing a stunning change, the impact of which we will be able to appreciate fully when we look back a decade later.”
“ We h a v e k i c k - s t a r t e d a n infrastructure capex cycle never seen before, and this lays the foundation for several decades of India’s growth,” he said “And this starts with the quality of governance Very few sectors globally are as tightly linked w i t h g o v e r n m e n t p o l i c y a s infrastructure,” said Gautam Adani.
MUMBAI: India's merchandise exports surged more than 9.1 per cent in May to USD 38.1 billion, compared to last year during the same month, highlights a report by Crisil.
The report noted that the country a l s o e x p e r i e n c e d a m o d e s t 1 1 per cent growth in exports compared to April. This growth was driven by both oil and non-oil exports. The report said that India's export performance aligns with the World Trade Organization's latest global trade outlook, which predicts a recovery in global goods trade volume this year
India's top export destinations, including the US, Europe, and the UAE, showed improvements However, the report also highlighted that the higher prices of global commodities, both energy and non-energy, could partly explain the increase in export values in
US dollar terms Similar to exports, India's imports also rose by 7 7 per cent to USD 61 2 billion in May, marking the highest import value in the past seven months. The increase in imports was mainly due to oil and core imports, whichexcludeoilandgold
Interestingly, oil import value increased in May compared to April, despite lower crude oil prices (USD 82 per barrel in May versus USD 90.1 per barrel in April). This suggests that India imported higher volumes of oil.
Crisil noted that India's trade deficit also widened to USD 23.8 billion in May from USD 19.1 billion in April In May last year, the trade deficit was USD 22.5 billion.
Additionally, India's services imports grew by 19.1 per cent to USD 16.6 billion in April. However, services
approximately USD 30 billion over the
past three months, which means the services trade surplus remains strong.
Looking ahead on India's trade, Crisil commented that the fiscal year h a s s t a r t e d p o s i t i v e l y, w i t h merchandise exports showing growth in the first two months. The recent strong export momentum and optimistic trade growth forecasts f
n a t i o n a l organizations are encouraging.
The government's focus on foreign trade agreements (FTAs) is also expected to support this growth. H o w e v e r, i m p o r t g r o w t h h a s outpaced export growth, increasing the trade deficit. This will be closely watched, especially since the US has announced tariff hikes on Chinese imports, which might lead to an influx of Chinese goods into the larger Asian market, including India.
NEW DELHI: Indian fir ms exporting items such as textiles, paints, furniture, mattresses, steel and aluminium to the EU must proactively prepare to comply with E c o d e s i g n f o r S u s t a i n a b l e P r o d u c t s R e g u l a t i o n ( E S P R ) which requires them to provide b a r c o d e a c c e s s i b l e d e t a i l e d information to prove that they m e e t p r e s c r i b e d E u r o p e a n sustainability standards from January 2026, according to a report by research body Global Trade and Research Initiative
ESPR will cover all products by
2030 but would begin with regulating items such as textiles, furniture, mattresses, tyres, detergents, paints, lubricants, iron and steel from January 2026.
“ESPR will lead to high costs of products because of changes needed in production processes. Since most products covered are consumer products, the price rise may lead to inflation in the EU,” GTRI said.
Besides, it could hurt exports from developing countries due to the increased costs and challenges of meeting high EU standards and compliance cost.
GTRI said that Indian firms exporting to the EU must proactively prepare to comply with ESPR requirements to maintain their market presence and leverage the shift towards sustainability for competitive advantage.
