FESCO and SAKSHAM to organize Direct Services between Indian and Russian ports

MOSCOW/NEW DELHI: FESCO Transportation Group and Indian logistics group SAKSHAM have agreed onthedevelopmentofcargoshippingfromIndiatoRussia.

The parties are planning to organize direct services from the ports of Mundra and Nhava Sheva to the ports of Novorossiysk and Saint-Petersburg and back as well as to study the potential cargo base for a possible service between the ports of Channi and Vladivostok, according to FESCO.

PM Gatishakti platform has 1,450 data layers to support Integrated Multimodal Logistics Planning : DPIIT

NEW DELHI: The Central Government’s PM Gatishakti National Master Plan (NMP) platform has over 1,450 data layers mapped onto it by various Ministries and Departments of the Central and State Governments for integrated planning for multimodal logistics and support data-based decision-making, a senior Union Commerce Ministry officialhassaid.

PM Gatishakti NMP is a GISenabled platform that integrates the data layers of the infrastructure of roads, railway lines, ports, inland waterways, telecom lines, power lines,etc.,ontoasingleportal.

While 585 data layers have been uploaded by 36 central ministries and departments, 872 data layers were uploaded by the state departments. Over 70 planning and decisionmaking tools have been developed on the NMP and SMP (state master plan), Smt Sumita Dawra, special

secretary, of the Department for PromotionofIndustryandInternal Trade(DPIIT) said.

The usage of NMP across central ministries has become comprehensive and well-entrenched, she claimed. Construction of a new broad-gauge line between Anand Nagar Ghughuli via Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh as a shorter route for some trains, a new broad gauge line betweenJunagarhtoNabarangpurin Odisha as an alternative route for movement of coal from ports to various steel plants and the development of a planning tool for identification of alternate path for power transmission lines thereby avoidingcoalmines,etcweresomeof theexamplescited.

Briefingthemediaontheprogress of NMP implementation, Dawra said that the institutions comprising the Empowered Group of Secretaries, Network Planning Group (NPG) and

Technical Support Unit have been established both at the Centre and States levels. At the central government level, 46 NPG meetings have taken place and 76 key infrastructure projects relating to railways, road transport and highways, shipping, industrial corridors, housing, urban affairs etc worth 5.14 lakh crore have been evaluated,shesaid.

The official also pointed out that using the NMP, 156 infrastructure gaps relating to first and last-mile connectivity issues of coal, steel, fertiliser, ports, food and public distribution sectors etc have been identified by various departments. “An amount of 75,000 crore (including 15,000 from private sources) for 100 critical transport infrastructure projects identified for thefirstandlastmileconnectivityhas been allocated in Union Budget 2023-24”,Dawrasaid.

Services exports may reach USD 400 Bn during 2023-24: SEPC

NEW DELHI: Buoyed by a significant jump in exports during 202223, Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) on Wednesday said the healthy growth trend will continue and shipments are expected to reach up to USD 400 billion this fiscal. During 202223, the country’s services exports rose by42percenttoUSD322.72billionfrom USD 254 billion in 2021-22, according to provisional data from the Commerce Ministry.

“The services sector had targeted USD 300 billion but accomplished USD 322 billion. Subject to the final data we might touch USD 350 billion in 2022-23 andbasedonthecurrenttrendandthe continuing growth our estimate is around USD 375 billion to USD 400 billion for 2023-24,” SEPC Chairman Sunil H Talati saidrecently.

Sectors that contributed to the

services exports growth during the last fiscalincludetravel,transport,medical, andhospitality,hesaid.

He further said that the council has been working tirelessly in collaboration with the government to catapult services sector growth with business delegations, B2B meets, and market specificinitiatives.

“Export of IT and IT enabled services is going strong and is highly likely to maintain the growth momentum.Travelsectoriscatchingup soon. The post-pandemic economic recovery has created increasing demand for goods and services from foreign markets, the stabilization of freightchargesandthenormalizationof supply chains are positive developments for the transport sector,” hepointedout.

The business services such as

engineering, architecture, legal and accountingservicesaswellasresearch and management consulting services stand to benefit leveraging the opportunities presented by the governmentinitiatives.

He also said that as for the key export destinations, India’s service exports have historically been concentrated in North America and Europe, but there is also significant potential for growth in emerging markets such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

“Diversification of export destinations can help to reduce dependence on traditional markets and open up new opportunities for service exports,”headded.

Talati said that certain incentives are necessary to further push the growthrates.

Global Shippers Forum and FIATA call for stronger data governance standards in Digital Supply Chains

LONDON: Shippers and forwarders organisations are calling for improved standards of data protection and confidentiality in digital trading and booking systems, in a joint statement issuedtoday.

FIATA, the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, and the Global Shippers Forum, have jointly issued an agreed Charter for Protection andGovernanceofDatainInternational Trade that sets out the minimum arrangements for data security and confidentiality that providers and

operators of digital booking and trading platforms should adopt and incorporate in their End-User Agreements (EUAs). RecommendationsintheCharterseekto enable a safe and trustworthy environment for conducting business basedonalevelplayingfield.

The Charter has been approved by members of both organisations and is believed to be the first declaration of rights for platform users in the trade andlogisticssector.

Dr Stéphane Graber, Director General of FIATA notes that “FIATA is

committed to enabling the shift of trade from analogue to digital form to increase efficiency and resilience of globalsupplychains.”

He continued: “In this journey, interoperability between platforms and their credibility amongst users are critical for success. This requires clear and fair rules on data exchange to protect confidentiality and ensure trust between stakeholders. FIATA is happy to lead this effort with GSF on the crucial topic of data governance and protection.”

NHAI to create around 10,000 km of Digital Highways by FY25

NEW DELHI : The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working towards the development of around 10,000 kilometres of optic fibre cables (OPC) infrastructure across the country by FY24-25, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a fully owned special purpose vehicle (SPV) of NHAI, will implement the network of digital highways by developing integrated utility corridors along the National Highways to develop OFC infrastructure. Around 1,367 km on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and 512 km on Hyderabad-Bangalore Corridor have been identified as pilot routes for digital highway development.

According to the ministry,

providing internet connectivity to remote locations across the OFC network will help to expedite the rollout of new-age telecom technologieslike5G&6G.

“Recently inaugurated, 246 km long Delhi–Dausa–Lalsot section of the Delhi – Mumbai Expressway features a three-meter-wide dedicated utility corridor used to lay Optical Fibre Cables, which will serveasthebackbonefortheroll-out of the 5G network in the region. OFC laying work along the national highwayshasstartedandistargeted for completion in about a year,” the Ministrysaid.

“OFC network will allow direct plug-and-play or ‘Fibre-on-demand’ model for the Telecom / Internet Services. The network will be leased out on a fixed price allotment mechanism on an ‘Open for All’ basis

throughawebportaltoeligibleusers. OFC allotment policy is being finalized in consultation with DoT (department of telecommunications) and TRAI (telecom regulatory authorityofIndia),”theMinistrysaid.

According to the Ministry, the creation of digital highways will not have a “catalytic impact” on India’s growth and development but will also contribute to the digital transformationoftheCountry.

In the Union Budget 2023-24, the Governmentallocatedacapitaloutlay of 2.58 lakh crore for roads and highways. This is 25% higher than that of the revised estimate for FY23. In the revised estimates for the current financial year too, the allocation has been enhanced to 2,06,302 crore. Capital expenditure in FY23 is up by 80% as compared to thepreviousfiscal.

APSEZ Board to consider partial buyback of debt securities on April 22

AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) Board will meet on April 22 to consider its first and partial buyback of debt securities in the currentfinancialyear.

The securities denominated either in Indian rupees or US dollar willbepartofthebuyback.

“A meeting of the Board of Directors of Adani Ports and Special

Economic Zone Limited is scheduled on April 22 to consider first and a partial buyback of certain of its debt securities,eitherdenominatedinINR or USD, in this financial year, subject to market conditions,” the company saidinafiling.

The company handled 32 mmt of total cargo in March 2023, implying a year-on-year growth of 9.5%. For the firsttimesinceJuly2022,thevolumes

crossed the 30 mmt mark. With 339 mmt volume in FY23, the company has recorded its largest port cargo volumesever.

The overall container volumes handled by Adani Ports in India jumped to 8.6 Million TEUs in FY23, including6.6MillionTEUsatMundra alone. Mundra port continues to be India’s largest seaport with 155 MMT oftotalcargohandledduringtheyear.

No concerns about Adani Group’s plans to expand: Israel Minister

NEW DELHI: Israel has no concerns about the Adani Group’s plans to expand its presence in the countryaftertakingoverthestrategic Haifa port as it is a “good deal” that could pave the way for more investments from the Indian side, Israeli Economy and Industry MinisterNirBarkatsaid.

Though the focus between India and Israel may not be on pushing ahead with negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA), the Israeli side is keen on encouraging more

Israeli companies to set up office in India and to develop joint ventures while aligning interests with the “Make in India” initiative, Barkat said.

Asked if Israel was concerned about the Adani Group’s investments in Israel following the recent downturn in the fortunes of the conglomerate, Barkat replied, “No, it’s not a concern. We’re not looking intothebusinesseshere.It’saclassic good investment in Israel and we welcomemoreinvestments.”

Noting that Israel had only two major ports at Haifa and Ashdod, Barkat said it was significant that the country had entrusted the management of a port to an Indian firm.

“The port in Haifa – the fact that Israel’s trusting a foreign entity to manageandleadtheportistestimony that we trust our friends in India. We’renotlookingatwhat’shappening here. It’s clean, hopefully a good deal and we want to welcome more deals likethatinIsrael,”hesaid.

India’s share in global computer services exports jumps to 11% in FY23

NEW DELHI: With software exports hitting a record high of USD 320billioninFY23,thecountry’sshare in global computer services exports hasjumpedtoaround11percentinthe year, according to an analysis. But the countrystilllagsintheoverallservices export share at about 4 per cent, according to analysis of the trade data for FY23 by DBS Senior Economist RadhikaRao.

According to her, the strong services trade performance will

add to the improving external balance dynamics this year, which is also aided by falling commodity prices.

The country’s share in computer services exports in the global trade is at a significant 10-11 per cent, while the overall services exports share is only 4 per cent in 2022, according to theDBSanalysis.

Net service trade under the balance of payments (BoP) jumped from a monthly average of USD 7.3

billion in 2019 to USD 12.9 billion in 2022andisoncoursetotouchanewof high of USD 13.5 billion in early 2023, saidRao.

On a full-year basis, services exports rose to a fresh high at USD 320 billion in FY23, up from USD 255 billion in FY22, marking a second consecutiveyearofrecordhigh.Even asimportpaymentsalsorose,thefullyearservicestradesurplusjumpedto USD 142 billion, more than a third higherthanFY22.

CHENNAI: Chennai Port recently achieved the all the time record of importing 1,26,500 Tons of Crude Oil in a single day by handling the vessel M.T. KASOS at Bharathi Dock 3 surpassing the

previous record of 1,23,300 Tons from vessel M.T. MARATHI on 14.04.2022.

SEA requests Govt to clear shipments held up at Ports due to Customs issues

NEW DELHI: Edible oils body SEA recently said crude sunflower and soyabean oil shipments are held upatportsduetocustomsclearances issuesandrequestedthegovernment to address the matter immediately, else it may lead to shortages and rise inretailprices.

The Government had permitted tariff rate quota (TRQ) during the 2022-23 financial year for import of crude sunflower and soyabean oil at nil duty and the shipments were allowed for clearance till June 20,

“Unfortunately, the Customs is insisting for ‘Bill of Entry’ and not accepting ‘Bill of Lading date’, hence shipments are held up since 1st April 2023,” Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) President Ajay Jhunjhunwala said, and cautioned that this “may also lead to shortage and also rise in thepriceofedibleoils.”

The Association has strongly taken up the issue with the food and commerce ministries and requested

them to allow the shipments of these two edible oils based on the ‘bill of lading date’ as notified by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT),hesaid.

“We are expecting that the matter will be resolved shortly,” Jhunjhunwala said in a letter to SEA members.
