cost may have come down to 10% of GDP on Infra facelift, Faster Freight, feels CBIC Chairman We will have to further work to determine the actual logis cs cost in India
NEW DELHI: India's logistics cost, pegged at 14 percent of the GDP for long, may have come down to around 10 percent, thanks to faster freight movement, reduced inter-state bottlenecks under GST, and significant improvements in infrastructure, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) Chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal
said on December 18.
“The logistics cost as a percentage of GDP cannot remain constant at 14 percent. Maybe, with some other calculations, I heard that it has come down to 10 percent. We will have to further work on it to determine the actual logistics cost in India,” he said.

SINGAPORE: SeaLead, a fast-growing Global Shipping Line, announced the launch of its new Dubai, Karachi to East Africa (DUKE) service, a Direct Liner Service connecting Pakistan with the Middle East and East Africa This service expands SeaLead's presence in Pakistan, linking it to the Middle East through Jebel Ali, a key transhipment hub, and further strengthens Pakistan’s connectivity to East Africa via the Middle East, thereby improving export opportunities
The DUKE service offers a port rotation that includes stops at Karachi, Jebel Ali, Mombasa, and back to Karachi. The inaugural vessel is set to depart from Karachi on 24 December 2024.
The launch of the DUKE service is especially significant considering the strong trade relationship between Pakistan and the UAE. According to Arab News, the UAE is Pakistan's third-largest trading partner af ter China and the United States, with bilateral trade volume reaching $5.6 billion during the fiscal year 2023–24. Of this, Pakistani exports to the UAE amounted to $1.59 billion, while imports stood at $4 billion. With a target to increase exports to the UAE to $2 billion by the end of the next fiscal year, the DUKE service offers a reliable platform to support these growing trade volumes.
Similarly, the country is looking to strengthen its trade ties with Africa, a region with immense growth potential According to The News International, Pakistan’s exports to the continent stand at just $2 billion, with trade activities in only 20 of Africa’s 54 countries. This is despite the positive projections of the World Bank
The DUKE service positions SeaLead as an enabler of these trade objectives, offering efficient and reliable links between the said regions, and unlocking opportunities for businesses to access these dynamic markets.
Shiva Mahadevan, Regional Managing Director, South Asia, Middle East and Africa, SeaLead, commented: “The DUKE service is a step forward in our strategy to expand into Pakistan while strengthening our presence in the Middle East and East Africa. With superior transits and strategic connectivity, this service delivers exceptional value to our customers, helping them access new markets.”
Doreen Yeo, Global Trade Director, SeaLead, highlighted: “The DUKE service aligns perfectly with Pakistan’s vision to boost exports to the Middle East and Africa. We are proud to play a role in facilitating this growth and connecting businesses across continents.”
The DUKE service further cements SeaLead's intent to develop regional trade and present new opportunities for businesses within the Middle East, and East Africa.

Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event, Agarwal emphasised the role of multi-modal connectivity and targeted reforms in bringing down logistics cost and boosting the country’s export competitiveness.
Agarwal pointed out that logistics costs in developed nations are typically 8-9 percent of the GDP to stress on India’s need to narrow the gap further
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime has been a game-changer in reducing transit times, he said “With the introduction of GST, the time taken at state borders has disappeared. The road infrastructure is better, and freight movement is much faster now.”
He credited initiatives like the Gatishakti National Master Plan for addressing structural challenges in logistics and infrastructure. He cited upcoming infrastructure projects, such as seaports and airports, as critical to bridging logistics gaps.
“Multi-modal connectivity via Gatishakti aims to cut
down logistics costs significantly New seaports and airports, including Jewar in Uttar Pradesh and Rajkot in Gujarat, are soon to be operational and will provide critical links to overcome logistical bottlenecks,” he said. Customs Modernisation to Aid Exporters
The CBIC has also been focusing on streamlining export-import processes to reduce clearance times
“We are conducting studies to reduce release times for exports and imports at customs The focus is on addressing structural challenges faced by exporters to make India’s exports more competitive globally,” Agarwal shared.
India’s high logistics cost is often seen as a barrier to trade competitiveness as it adds a burden on exporters and manufacturers.
As the Gover nmen
infrastructure projects and implement policy changes, Agarwal emphasised that ongoing evaluations and studies will play a key role in measuring the progress and ensuring sustained improvements in the logistics landscape.

NEW DELHI: Deeper integration into global value chains, enhanced digital trade infrastructure and a focus on building the competitiveness of MSMEs will help India more than double its share in global trade from the present 2 per cent, CII said recently. Chairman of the CII National Committee on Export-Import Sanjay Budhia said that the chamber is committed to working closely with the government to address critical challenges which hinder manufacturing and export growth.
"The journey will require deeper integration into global value chains, enhanced digital trade infrastructure, and a focus on building the competitiveness of MSMEs," he said.
To further unlock the potential of exports, he suggested a common onlineportalforissueofcirculars pertaining to various ports and locations.
There is also a need to adopt best practices being followed by developed countries and implement the CAARR (Customs Authority on Advance Ruling) Regulation, 2021 as it would contribute to reduction of global trade costs and bring certainty in duty liability, Budhia said.
He added that measures need to be undertaken to strengthen the AEO (authorised economic operator) programme.
It has generated a lot of confidence in exporters reducing their time which they are utilising more productively in their workplace.
Further, he said that to reduce litigation and make refund process smooth when there is no dispute between the department and importer, refunds may be processed without requirement of filing appeal with the CommissionerAppeals.
"These efforts will reduce double duty payment due to Customs EDI (electronic data inter-change) system error, refund duty deposited, excess payment of duty due to error, refund arising out of the bonafide clerical error and short shipment and part shipment," he said Aligning India's tax system with global best practices has improved the ease of doing business.
He added that many of India's trading partners, such as the European Union and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), have similar VAT-based tax structures, making it easier for Indian businesses to engage in cross-border transactions.
MUMBAI: India’s economy will grow a tad faster at 6.6 percent in FY26 compared with 6 4 percent in the current fiscal, as investments emerge as a key driver of growth, India Ratings and Research said at the launch of its “FY2026MacroEconomicOutlook”
“Ind-Ra believes India is facing monetar y, fiscal and exter nal tightening. While it expects monetary conditions to ease now, the fiscal and external tightening is expected to c o n t i n u e i n F Y 2 6 a s w e l l Nevertheless, the FY26 growth is expected to be the same as India’s best decadal growth (FY11-20),” said
D e v e n d r a Ku m a r Pa n t , c h i e f economist, Ind-Ra.
The ratings agency was less optimistic about the country ’s quarterly growth outlook than the Reserve Bank of India, which pegged FY25growthat6 6percentfortheyear
The RBI expects the economy to average 7 percent for the second half of the year after what Ind-Ra describes as a “cyclical slowdown” pushed growth in Q2FY25 to a sevenquarter low of 5.4 percent. The Indian economy grew 6 percent in the first half of the year.
Ind-Ra expects 6.5 percent growth
in the current quarter, followed by 7 percent growth in the Januarymarch quarter
The estimates for the first half of the year at 6.9 percent are also lower than RBI’s estimate of 7.1 percent. The push, according to the agency, is expected to come from investments, which are expected to rise 7.2 percent in FY26 from 6.7 percent expected in the current fiscal.
Consumption growth will only see a marginal uptick to 6.9 percent from 6.7 percent expected this fiscal.
Consumption growth was a paltry 4 percent in the previous fiscal.
NEW DELHI: India's sugar mills can easily export up to 2 million metric tons of the sweetener this s e a s o n a s d o m e s t i c s u p p l y prospects improve and local prices show a downward trend, the head of a leading industry body said.
"The supply situation looks better than initially expected, which is why the government should allow mills to export at least a million or a couple of million tons of sugar," Deepak Ballani, director general of the Indian Sugar Mills Association, told Reuters in an interview
Last year, India, the world's biggest sugar producer after Brazil,
banned exports of the sweetener for the 2022-23 season, halting shipments for the first time in seven years, as a drought cut cane yields and hit output.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration extended the ban on sugar exports for the second straight season, as India, a l s o t h e w o r l d ' s b i g g e s t consumer of the sweetener, grappled with the prospect of lower cane output.
India's sugar season runs from October to September
NEW DELHI: India will have to get ready for future trade challenges, including new tariffs and taxes from countries like the US and the European Union, according to Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi.
Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event on Wednesday, Sarangi addressed potential barriers like the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and deforestation regulations.
These measures, along with potential tariffs, could violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, Sarangi explained. He highlighted actions by the US, such as the Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPS Act, as examples of countries trying to boost domestic manufacturing Sarangi noted that such measures often create hurdles for developing economies.
He said, “So both the combination of non-tariff measures as well as potential tariff measures in clear violation of WTO (World Trade Organisation) commitments is something which India has to brace up
in future to deal with.”
Regarding potential US tariff increases under the incoming administration, Sarangi advised a cautious approach. He noted the difficulty in interpreting statements made by the US President-elect and said further analysis is needed.
Sarangi added, “But what I have understood from what he was saying is that his main intent is that reciprocity will matter in future.” Sarangi acknowledged that while some potential tariffs could violate WTO rules, the previous US administration had used national security as a justification for such actions.
The DGFT chief concluded by highlighting India's high tariffs in some sectors like agriculture, suggesting potential reciprocal tariffs from the US might not have a significant impact However, he also acknowledged the possibility of impact on other traded items and emphasised the need to wait for more detailed information before assessing the full effects
BANASKANTHA : Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the recently electrified BhildiSamdari-Luni-
Ratangarh Railway Line. He also laid the foundation stone for works related to the Luni-Samdari-Bhildi double line project during an event held in Rajasthan
The 271.97 km-long Luni-Samdari-Bhildi Doubling Project is expected to cost Rs. 3,085 crore. Besides covering three districts of Rajasthan, the project will extend into Banaskantha in North Gujarat, as Bhildi is located in the Deesa taluka of the district. This project
aims to facilitate seamless movement of double-stack container trains and passenger trains while accommodating the increasing demand for additional train services.
Meanwhile, the dedication of 604 RKM (Route Kilometer) of the newly electrified Bhildi-Samdari-LuniJodhpur-Merta Road-Degana-Ratangarh line, completed at a cost of Rs. 602 crore, will enable seamless freight train operations to Kandla Port and Mundra Port from Rajasthan. The electrification will also enhance sectional speeds and serve as a greener alternative to diesel traction.
NEW DELHI: The Railways Parliamentary Standing Committee has suggested that Indian Railways shore up its “non-fare revenues” – coming in from segments like advertising, commercial leasing of land, and so on. Incorporating “green budgeting” methodologies into financial allocations have also been suggested.
According to the Committee recommendations, Railways can explore seeking assistance from external agencies, if necessary, “to enhance revenue by fully utilising the extensive advertising space and substantial land holdings at their disposal”. Internal Resources can be augmented by “promoting development or leasing of commercial complexes in and around railway stations to tap the high footfall of travellers.”
“Further, Railways ought to explore additional innovative methods for increasing revenue by gaining insights into advanced railway systems globally,” thereportmentions.
As per vision 2030 document, the Indian Railways aims to increase the non fare revenue from 3.4 per cent to 20 per cent of total revenue in line with advanced railways systems around the world. Indian Railways had non-fare revenue of Rs. 537.34 crore in FY-24.
The Standing Committee has taken note of the development of upcoming freight corridors, that include one for energy, minerals and cement, one for port connectivity and another for high traffic density All of these corridors have been identified under the PM Gati Shakti Mission to facilitate multi–modal connectivity
“Establishment of these corridors will have a positive multiplier effect on the Indian economy enhance share of IR in freight transport thereby generating increased revenue while simultaneously reducingcarbonfootprint,”itobserved
The Ministry has been asked to prioritise development of these corridors by drawing specific phases and timely execution of each.
Freight loading share of railways is at present 26 per cent, and continues to be a major revenue driver for the organisation. The average speed of freight trains in FY24 was 25.14 km/h, which according to the committee was on the lower side.
“The Committee further feels that creation of Dedicated Freight Corridors is of prime importance to increase the speed of freight trains, thereby increasing freight loading as well as earnings of Indian Railways,” the report mentioned.
