India in talks to tackle rising steel imports : Steel Minister

NEW DELHI: India is in discussions to tackle higher steel imports, Steel Minister H D Kumaraswamy said, without sharing further details.

Rising imports are a key issue for steelmakers even as demand for the metal continues to surge, Kumaraswamy told reporters at an industry event.

India, the world’s second biggest crude steel producer, was a net importer of steel through the fiscal year ending March 2024, and remained a net importer from April to July.

China was the top steel exporter to India from April to July, followed by Japan and South Korea.

Higher imports have hit local steel prices, which have fallen to their lowest in more than three years, data from commodities consultancy showed.

Earlier in the month, Steel Minister Kumaraswamy had said his Ministry will try to convince the Finance Ministry to raise tariffs on steel imports, in a bid to protect domestic mills from a rise in cheaper imports from countries like China.

In August, India initiated an anti-dumping investigation on certain steel products imported from Vietnam, in response to the urging of the country’s leading steelmakers, such as JSW Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel.

Last year, the exports were $778 billion He also said that there a r e p l a n s t o o p e n o f f i c e s i n different countries, including Singapore, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, possibly one in New York, Silicon Valley, and Zurich, as part of the Indian Government's outreach programme to handhold foreign investors

He said the plan is that through these offices, a person sitting anywhere in the world can buy land in India, can see that piece of land, take all approvals through a single window platform and resolve issues, if any, through video conference. He added that it would make it easy to invest in India and do business there.

On exports, he said that the current geo -political situation affects everything, including trade, economy, interest rates, stock market, and shipping routes.

He informed that the commerce ministry is holding a meeting with the shipping industry to look at issues like container shortages, skyrocketing freight rates and how to reduce the impact of the Red Sea crisis These issues are hurting Indian exporters and importers.

He also said that to attract investments and boost domestic manufacturing, he is meeting countries like Japan, Singapore, and Switzerland to set up units in Indian industrial townships The cabinet recently approved 12 such townships

in states like Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Besides, four have already been developed, and work is ongoing in four other industrial cities India is developing modern infrastructure common effluent facilities and providing utilities like water, power, and digital connectivity in these townships.

He further said that the countries recognise that when India buys oil from Russia due to sanctions on countries like Iran and Venezuela, it helps stabilise the world market. He also said that the Commerce and Industry Ministry is looking at ways to promote trade and investments through the national investment promotion agency Invest India.

DCSA State of the Industry report marks a Milestone for the Shipping Container Industry in its Digitalisation Journey

A M S T E R D A M : C o

Shipping Association (DCSA) –a neutral, non-profit organisation driving standardisation and digital innovation in container shipping –has announced the release of its milestone

“The State of the Industry Report 2024 ”

The report reveals that stakeholders from across the sector perceive clear benefits of digitalisation. 86% of cargo owners, for instance, see it as a tool for operational efficiency, while ports and terminals h i g h l i g h t

Banks, meanwhile, highlight the potential for risk reduction. Importantly, digital standards were identified as key to enabling seamless operations, with stakeholders highlighting their role in making digitalisation a success.

The report also highlights a range of barriers that can be addressed in order to achieve faster, more widespread change. Indeed, while 90% of cargo owners claim their organisations are ready for digitalisation, 66% believe they need external support in getting there. Meanwhile, awareness of digital standards still varies between sectors and jurisdictions.

Commenting on the launch, Thomas Bagge, Chief Executive Officer at DCSA, said:

“Our landmark report marks a pivotal moment for the industry, allowing us to reflect on our progress with pride This year, electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) adoption reached 5%, up from 1.2% in 2021, and carriers adopted more DCSA standards in the first quarter of 2024 than in the whole of 2023. For example, the common Track and Trace (T&T) API standard saw a 40% increase in callouts between September 2023 and March 2024.”

“We’re supported by a broad range of stakeholders across the supply chain cargo owners, carriers, banks, freight forwarders, ports and terminals, cargo insurers, and technology providers all eager for better digital tools and standards We look forward to accelerating the shift to a fully digitalised supply chain.”

The report is intended to be used as a tool for industry stakeholders to better understand how they can improve operational efficiency, boost customer satisfaction and drive a more sustainable supply chain ecosystem.

Red Sea crisis, logistical challenges impacting India’s exports, feel Trade Experts

NEW DELHI: The Red sea crisis and logistical challenges have severely impacted the country’s exports in August, which contracted 9.3 per cent, according to exporters and experts Think tank GTRI said the contraction of petroleum product exports’ by 37 56 per cent to $5 95 billion in August is linked to the ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea

These exports were $9.54 billion in August 2023.

“This dramatic decline has significantly impacted India’s overall merchandise trade, leading to a 9.33 per cent reduction in August 2024 compared to the previous year,” Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Interestingly, he said, crude oil prices remained relatively stable b e t w e e n t h e s e t w o p e r i o d s , suggesting that the drop in petroleum product exports is “linked to ongoing disruptions” in the Red Sea.

The yearlong ongoing disruptions have forced shipping routes to take longer paths around the Horn of Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, rendering exports to Europe less viable.

Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President Ashwani Kumar said such a sharp decline in merchandise exports has come amidst continuous global economic uncertainties coupled with drop in commodity prices and logistical challenges.

The logistical challenges that exporters are facing included lack of

shipping space, irregular shipping schedule, and ships skipping Indian ports.

Mithileshwar Thakur, Secretary General, AEPC (Apparel Export Promotion Council), said the apparel exports kept its momentum of growth amidst the global headwinds growing at an average of 7.12 per cent during the April-August period.

“RMG (readymade garments) in August grew at impressive rate of 11 88 per cent showcasing the resilience of the industry and strength of Indian brands to comply with the global sourcing demand,” Thakur said.

He added that the industry’s order books are robust and the sector is hopeful of continuing the impressive growth.

India Post to be transformed into logistics firm : Jyotiraditya Scindia

N E W D E L H I : I n d i a n Government is looking to transform India Post into a l o g i s t i c s c o m p a n y a n d increase its revenue by 50-60% i n t h e n e x t 3 - 4 y e a r s , Communications Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia said recently

This assumes significance as the Government-owned India Post is into delivering mails and letters besides having banking and deposits services.

T h e p o s t d e p a r t m e n t ’ s transformation is crucial, given the competition it is witnessing from private logistics players with regard

to its bread and butter business of delivering parcels, mails and letters.

“We need to transform ourselves from just a mail business and a letter business. We have got to look at route

optimisation, multiple sources to be able to transport our services,” Scindia said at an event by Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI).

S h r i S c i n d i a s a i d t h e Government will be looking at all potential ser vices to increase the revenue of India

P o s t , g i v e n t h a t t h e department has the potential t o t a k e s e r v i c e s t o t h e doorsteps of people in rural and remote areas Currently, the turnover of India Post is about Rs 12,000 crore and over the next 3-4 years, the Government is planning to increase it by 50-60%.

Govt mulling lifting ban on non-basmati rice export: Food Secretary

NEW DELHI: The Government is mulling lifting the ban on export of certain varieties of non-basmati rice, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said on Wednesday "It (lifting of export ban o n w h i t e r i c e ) i s a l s o u n d e r consideration of the Government

These things are dynamic and we will take an appropriate decision depending on the requirement and stocks available," Chopra told reporters Export of non-basmati white rice has been banned since July 20, 2023 to boost domestic supply

The Government has extended 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice indefinitely

The Secretary said there is ample stock of rice in the Government godowns and retail prices are also under control.

Intra-Asia rates weaken again; Drewry launches new Intra-Asia Container Index

LONDON: Average spot rates on most Intra-Asia container trade lanes weakened again in the first two weeks of September, according to Drewry’s new Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), launched today

Drewry’s new composite IntraAsia Container Index (IACI), a weighted average of spot container freight rates, decreased 25% to $668 per 40ft container in the past fortnight and has fallen back 35% since its recent peak of $1,025 in the second fortnight of July

M u c h l i k e D r e w r y

Container Index (WCI), one of the

most followed industry indices for East-West trade lane spot rates, IACI will be an open-access resource allowing shipping stakeholders to follow the pulse of one of the world’s most important container shipping markets.

IACI is a volume-weighted index of spot container freight rates on 18 large Intra-Asia trade lanes to and from China, 3 North/East Asian countries (Japan, South Korea and Taiwan), 5 South East Asian countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,

(India and the United Arab Emirates).

“As growth in container shipping shifts from inter-continental to intraregional trades, monitoring these trades is now far more important than was the case 13 years ago, when we launched the World Container Index,” said Philip Damas, head of Supply Chain Advisors and managing director of Drewry

Drewry has noted increasing volatility in Intra-Asia spot rates over recent years, with rates rising strongly this summer and now correcting downwards sharply with softening regional demand.

Maersk makes further step to support methanol bunkering standards in Japan

YOKOHAMA: A.P . Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has taken a significant step towards supporting the development of methanol bunkering in Japan by co-hosting Japan’s first "methanol bunkering simulation" at the Port of Yokohama.

The Alette Maersk, Maersk’s fifth dual-fuel methanol vessel, christened in Los Angeles at the end of August, participated in the methanol bunkering simulation conducted by Kokuka Sangyo’s methanol tanker, Eikamaru. To lay the foundation for future methanol bunkering, the involved parties collaborated to test key operations, including berthing, unberthing, and hose connections

“The Ports and Harbors Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Tr a n s p o r t a n d To u r i s m h a s announced plans to convene a study group to explore the development of methanol bunkering hubs in Japan. Establishing methanol bunkering hubs in our ports is vital, and we will accelerate discussions, leveraging the insights from this simulation,” said, NAKAGAWA Kenzo, Director of the Industrial Port Policy Division at the Ports and Harbours Bureau.

Japan is currently in the process of developing methanol fuel bunkering guidelines Insights gained from this initiative will serve as valuable references in establishing these guidelines and in developing methanol fuel supply infrastructure and processes in Japan.

This bunkering simulation marks a significant development following Maersk’s Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Yokohama and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical on the development of methanol bunkering infrastructure in Yokohama. This initiative also receives support from additional stakeholders, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism’s Port and Harbor Bureau.

NAKAGAWA Kenzo, Director of the Industrial Port Policy Division at the Ports and Harbours Bureau, expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in Japan's first methanol bunkering simulation.

Yasuhiro SHIMBO, Director General of the Port and Harbor Bureau in the City of Yokohama, expressed his appreciation to Maersk for facilitating the bunkering simulation on the “Alette Maersk”. He stressed that the port of Yokohama is dedicated to developing methanol bunkering capabilities and contributing to the decarbonisation of both Japanese and international maritime transport.

Masahiko Naito, Division Director of the C1 Chemicals Division, believes this is a big step towards implementing actual methanol bunkering and achieving carbon neutrality in Japan. He expressed excitement about today’s successful collaboration with multiple partners.

“It is an honor to participate in the very first simulation of methanol bunkering in Japan. Maersk is committed to a decarbonised future, and it is our great pleasure to support Japan’s ambition in decarbonising the shipping and energy sectors. We look forward to collaborating with the broader industry and ecosystem in Japan to accelerate the adoption and development of lower - emission practices in this country,” said, Toru Nishiyama, Managing Director, Northeast Asia, Maersk.
