API-integrated reefer solution with shareable datalog

COPENHAGEN: Moving perishable goods around the world is a challenging task, especially when it comes to cargo like fruits, meat & medicine thataresensitivetofluctuatingconditionsintransit.

To ensure optimal conditions when moving sensitive cargo from A to B, Maersk’s own refrigerated containers –equivalent to hundreds of thousands of units – are connected to Maersk’s Remote Container Management system which tracks the conditions inside the reefers. Since December 2019, customers have had visibility to these conditions via the virtualreeferassistantCaptainPeter.

Now,A.P.Moller–MaersklaunchesthenewCaptainPeter Integrated package, enabling data integration with Application Programming Interface (API) for customers to get the raw data log with temperature readings into their own system of choice. It could be their own transportation management system or a 3rd party platform. In addition, the contractual customer can now grant access for their shippers and consignees to log in and view shipment details directlyinCaptainPeter.

For more than three years, Captain Peter has helped Maersk’scustomers with managing their perishable goods by providing temperature & humidity information on in-transit refrigerated containers. Customers can now choose between three different versions of Captain Peter dependent on their needs. “We are constantly developing our product portfolio based on feedback from customers, and the demand for more agile digital tools and add-ons has risen dramatically since the pandemic,” explains Bruce Marshall. In parallel with the digital development, Maersk’s Remote Container Management infrastructure is constantly improved. Over the course of 2022 more than 80% of the reefer fleet was upgraded to deliver hourly data to Captain Peter - as compared to a daily update previously - enabling even more visibility and reducing the risk of damaged goods and food waste. By the end 2023, 90% of the Maersk reefer fleet will support hourly datalogtransmission.

J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd and Indian Potash Ltd signs JV concession agreement with Visakhapatnam Port Authority

VISAKHAPATNAM : Vizag Multipurpose Terminal Pvt Ltd,anequaljointventurebetweenJMBaxiPorts&Logistics Ltd and Indian Potash Ltd, has signed a concession agreement with Visakhapatnam Port Authority for mechanisingandoperatingamulti-purposecargoberthatthe State-ownedportona30-yearcontract.

K Rama Mohana Rao, Chairman, Visakhapatnam Port Authority, said that the port authority has signed the concessionagreementwithVizagMultipurposeTerminal.

A concession agreement sets out the terms and conditions ofaportcontractandsetstheprojectinmotion.

The J M Baxi Ports & Logistics-Indian Potash team placed the highest royalty of Rs55.44 a ton for the project to emerge the successful bidder on a tender issued by Visakhapatnam PortAuthority.

Port tenders at major ports (owned by the Centre) are decided on the basis of royalty per ton – the entity willing to share the highest royalty per ton of cargo handled at the berth withtheportauthoritywinsthedealfor30years.

The royalty payable will rise annually in tandem with the increase in wholesale price index (WPI), a measure of costs. The terminal operator will be free to set market rates under the new Major Port Authorities Act and the model concession agreement(MCA).

Indian Potash Ltd – more than 70 percent owned by fertiliser co-operatives- is India’s biggest fertiliser importer and the second largest buyer of fertilisers in the global market. Indian Potash imports fertilisers through all the Indian ports and it is the only company in India which handles fertilisersthroughouttheyearatallports.

This will be the fourth contract win for J M Baxi Ports & Logistics at a State-owned major port in recent times.

Mumbai-based J M Baxi Ports & Logistics, India’s third most valued logistics company, secured contracts last year to run container terminals at Jawaharlal Nehru Port and V O Chidambaranar Port (formerly Tuticorin Port) and the

shallowwater/coastalberthsatJNPort.

The contract at Visakhapatnam Port involves mechanising the eastern coast port’s East Quay berth 7 (EQ7) for handling bulk cargo including fertilisers with private funds worth Rs 201 crores. When mechanised, the EQ7 berth will have a capacity to handle 3.61 million tonnes (mt) of cargo a year.

The project is part of the national monetisation pipeline (NMP) of the Government wherein operational infrastructure assets including port terminals will be privatised through the public-private-partnership (PPP) route.

J M Baxi Ports & Logistics separately runs a 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity container terminal at Visakhapatnam Port.

A TEU is the standard size of a container and a common measure of capacity in the container business.

In January, German container shipping line HapagLloyd AG said it has signed binding agreements to acquire a 40 percent stake in J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd

SMP Kolkata Chairman visited Balagarh hub

KOLKATA : Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port ( Kolkata Port)ChairmanPLHaranadh along with Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi visited the site of “Extended Port Gate Facility at Balagarh”. The project is planned for decongestion of the Kolkata Dock System and will have two berths on 100 acres in theinitialphase.

The proposed cost of the project is around Rs 450 crore

out of it Rs 350 crore is planned as investment from PPP partners towards construction of berths. The port is planning to invest another Rs 100 crore towards infrastructure development. The SMP chief examined the possible connectivity options, project facilities, encumbrances and wayforwardinitiatives.Theport is in talks with CESC and other stakeholdersinthisregard.

Railways plans concessions for Truckers on dedicated Freight corridors

NEW DELHI - Indian Railways, the national transporter of India is looking to woo more corporate customers and capture the modal freight share from national highways to the dedicated freight corridors. Earlier, the railways under its national rail plan expressed its intentions of grabbing 40-45 percent of the total domestic cargo movement [close to 3,000 million tonnes of yearly freight volumes (currently 1,418 mt)] by 2030 from thepresentlevelof26-27percent.

In light of the same, the ministry of railways is likely to offer a slew of concessions to truck operators on dedicated freight corridors (DFCs). As per sources, 25-30 per cent reliefintheexistingroll-on,roll-off(RoRo)chargesmaybe in the offing, along with higher concessions on traffic capturedforemptywagons.

The issue was deliberated upon by the railway board and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) after DFCC highlighted that the existing RoRo rates were too high for truckers to make the shift from

roadwaystorailways.

In RoRo, trucks, with or without goods, are loaded on trainsthrougharampprovidedatthedead-endofaloopon BRN wagons (specialised open wagons built solely for transportation of trucks). Before loading, the trucks are weighed and passed under a height gauge to ensure that theyconformtotheregulationsforsafepassage.

“While the segment is new for us, there is significant demand for RoRo services from the private sector, because the truck operator saves money on three counts through this mode — fuel cost, highway toll, and wear and tear of the vehicle. Currently, the traffic on RoRo is minimal because the present rates aren’t feasible,” aDFCCofficialsaid.

RoRo reduces the scope of damage and delays during the shifting of goods from one transport to another, therefore solving the last-mile connectivity woes. Atpresent,theseservicesareoperationalonDFCCtracks andKonkanRailways.

Iran pitches for faster cooperation in Chabahar port project

NEW DELHI - Iran recently strongly pitched for faster implementationoftheChabaharportprojectaswellasuse ofthefacilitybyIndiatosendvariousshipmentssayingthe keytransithubwillbenefitboththecountries.

Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi also sought resumption of import of crude oil by India from Iran while citing New Delhi not succumbing under pressure by the Western powers to not continue procurement of petroleum productsfromRussiafollowingtheUkrainecrisis.

India stopped procurement of crude oil from Iran after the US did not continue with sanction waivers to India and severalothercountries.

“We believe that India is and was strong and powerful to stand against the pressure of the West… India is a rising power. India has a powerful economy. So India could easily resist pressure from the US and

the West,” the ambassador told a group of journalists. Citing India’s resistance against pressure to not buy oil from Russia, Elahi hoped that New Delhi would soon start importing oil from Iran as such a move would benefit the Indian economy, Indian people and the Indian oil firms concerned.

On the Chabahar port project, he called for its speedy implementation while highlighting its strategic importance.

“We should view Chabahar port not just from an economic perspective but it should be considered as a strategic partnership. Because of this importance, the speed of cooperation, the speed of progress and the speed of promotion in Chabahar should be faster than what is now,” he said.

CFSs hit by Customs order to route all factory sealed export boxes via parking plaza at J N Port

NAVI MUMBAI - Some 33 container freight stations (CFS) servicing Jawaharlal Nehru Port, India’s second busiest container gateway, are potentially losing more than 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a month cumulatively after the Customs Department last October directed all factorystuffedexportcontainerstoberoutedonlythroughthe Centralized Parking Plaza (CPP) developed by the port authority for documentation and onward journey to the terminalsforloadingontoships.

The Customs Department also ordered that a factory stuffed/sealed export container can be stored in the buffer yard of the Centralized Parking Plaza if it misses a ship until thenextvesselarrives.

The twin decisions by the Customs Department have dealt a blow to the business prospects of container freight stations, some of which are run by logistics firm such as A P MollerMaersk, Container Corporation of India, Allcargo Logistics, JMBaxiPorts&Logistics,CentralWarehousingCorporation, Balmer & Lawrie, Gateway Distriparks, Continental Warehousing (Nhava Seva), Seabird Marine Services, Navkar Corporation, PSA International, Apollo Logisolutions, Punjab StateContainer&WarehousingCorporation andMaharashtraStateWarehousingCorporation.

It is also the second instance where the CFSs are facing an existential crisis after the Government introduced the direct portdelivery(DPD)schemeafewyearsago.

In fact the plaza spread over 45 hectares has a capacity to park1,538tractortrailersatatime.

The plaza was built to integrate the parking of tractor trailerscarryingfactorystuffedexportcontainersatoneplace instead of multiple locations earlier. It was also designed to help integrate document processing by the Customs Department, ease the movement of container trucks on port roads and help the terminals plan their tractor trailer movementsinabetterway.

Around 35 percent of the export containers handled at JawaharlalNehruPortarefactorysealedcontainers.

CFS operators opines that the October order of the Customs Department has “deprived them of legitimate and rightfulshareofbusiness”.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority was recently quoted as saying that the Centralized Parking Plaza has helped cut exportdwelltimeattheportby20percentto3hours.

The parking plaza is located just 5 kms from the terminal gates,requiringatraveltimeof30minutes.

“Routing factory stuffed export containers through the parking plaza is the cheapest and the most convenient way to sendexportcargo,”hesaid.

Trade sources said that taking export containers via the Centralized Parking Plaza is “cheaper” than CFS if a ship is waitingtoloadcontainers.

“But, if a ship is expected after 4-5 days, exporters go to a nearby CFS to deposit their containers which are then carted by the CFS operators to the terminal gates in time to catch the nextshipwhenitarrives,”saidatradesource.

DBGT, Tuticorin handled first direct call of MSC vessel from West Africa

Gateway Terminal once again accommodated MV. MSC VIDHI with LOA 277m on 15.03.2023, which arrived fromTema/Ghana.Thediligenteffortsof MSC and DBGT to attract direct call to TuticorinPortduringtheWestAfricacashewseasonhas come to fruition by accommodating MV. MSC VIDHI. As usual, MSC takes the lead in deploying as much adhoc calls as possible at DBGT to fulfil the customer needs. Incidentally, this was the second call for MSC VIDHI at DBGT as she made her earlier call on 20th March 2022 during last cashew season.

Notably, Tuticorin Port and DBGT always try to promote Raw Cashew imports as it is one of the Major import cargos for Tuticorin Trade fraternity. The prevailing VRC incentive scheme offered by VOCPA is one of the major motivation factors for the players like MSC, initiating such ADHOCcalls.

To commemorate the occasion, a low-key ceremony was organized by DBGT onboard the vessel, during which the Master of the vessel was presented with a Memento. The

Terminal Management thanked MSC for their valuable and aggressive support for the Raw Cashew Trade by deploying biggervesselsdirectlyfromthePortofOrigin.

MSC VIDHI is having capacity of 5770 TEU’s, arrived directly from Tema / Ghana, with total throughput of 615 Crane Moves at Tuticorin and bound to Abu Dhabhi (UAE) as next port. The vessel arrived and berthed at DBGT on 15.03.2023@08.00Hrs.

Govt intends to increase share of Inland Waterways to 5% as per Maritime India Vision (MIV)-2030

NEW DELHI - Inland Water Transport (IWT) is the most economical mode of transportation, especially for bulk cargo like coal, iron ore, cement, food grains and fertilizer. Presently, it remains under utilized at a share of 2% in India’s modal mix. Government intends to increase theshareofIWTto5%asperMaritimeIndiaVision(MIV)2030.

Project-II (Arth Ganga) has been initiated which is based on the principles of the sustainable development model to energize economic activities which will lead to inclusive growth and play a key role in improving the livelihoods of the population with the transportation of goods and passengers (including tourist) through National Waterways No. 1(River Ganga).
