DG Shipping urges to enhance reporting, tracking mechanism on West Asian routes

MUMBAI: The Government has issued advisories to ship companies to enhance reporting, tracking and security protocols for vessels on West Asian routes and coming into Indian waters.

In a circular dated April 10, 2024, the Directorate General of Shipping (Mumbai) advised ship managers, ship masters and seafarers to enhance the mechanism for reporting and tracking maritime activities to safeguard the interest of merchant ships and their crews.

The ministry has identified sensitive zones that include the

Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Bab Al Mandeb Strait, Red Sea, Somali Basin and Arabian Sea region.

The circular said in the event of any incidents or security escalation due to incidents, all vessels transiting through these areas are requested to submit their details via the online Ship Reporting Form.

“This measure is critical for maintaining a comprehensive and upto-date vessel. database, which will facilitate easier tracking and coordination at the Centre if Indian Navy is required to respond to the

Incident,” it added.

According to the circular, in the event of a maritime security Incident, the vessel should contact the nearest Indian Navy vessel and coalition warship using VHF Channel 16, provide the current location, describe the situation, communicate the intended course of action and seek further guidance. Furthermore, the circular said it is advised to conduct comprehensive ship shore security drill encompassing all pertinent security scenarios, including but not limited to piracy and loitering munitions threat.

COVID pandemic wiped 24.6 Mn TEU off Container market growth : BIMCO

LONDON: “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global container market grew only 1 5% from 171 0 million TEU in 2019 to 173.5 million TEU in 2023. Without the pandemic, that figure would have been 24 6 million higher, landing at 198.1 million in 2023,” says Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO.

During the past four years, the container market has faced not only lower than expected growth in the global economy, but the ratio of market growth vs economic growth, the so-called GDP multiplier, was also substantially lower than normal.

In October 2019, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast that the global economy would grow at an average annual rate of 3.5% during 2020-2023, in line with the average annual rate of growth of 3.4% seen during the years leading up to the pandemic. Instead, the global economy ended with an average annual growth rate of only 2.6%.

“At the same time, the container market grew at an average annual rate of 0 4% during the 2020-2023 period, equal to a GDP multiplier of

just 0.14. Between 2013 and 2019 the GDP multiplier averaged 1.06. Had this been maintained during 2020-2023, the market would have grown at an average annual rate of 2.7% and the 2023 container market would have ended 16.8 million TEU higher,” says Rasmussen.

The multiplier between regional GDP growth and regional container import volumes was lower than during the 2013-2019 period in all regions However, in the East & Southeast Asia and Europe &

M e d i t e r r a n e a n r e g i o n s , t h e multiplier was negative during 2020-2023 and import container volumes ended lower in 2023 than in 2019. In fact, 11.4 million of the 16.8 million TEU lost due to a lower GDP multiplier was lost in the two regions.

Average annual GDP growth in North America ended the 2020-2023 period 3.6% higher than the IMF predicted in October 2019. However, in other regions, GDP growth was lower than the 2019 projection and global average annual GDP growth ended 28% lower than the projection.

“Had the global economy grown as originally predicted during 20202023, and had the GDP multiplier matched the 2013-2019 level, the global container market in 2023 would have been 24 6 million higher Whether or not pent-up demand, and/or global economic growth above trend, can help recover part of the lost growth in coming years remains to be seen. However, current predictions for growth in the global economy do not indicate a resurgence in growth,” says Rasmussen.

India’s US bound Pharma exports surge by 15% to $7.83 billion in FY24

N E W D E L H I : I n d i a ’ s pharmaceutical exports to the United States, which accounts for nearly a third of the country’s total pharma exports, have rebounded strongly after a period of stagnation.

According to estimates by the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil), exports to the US surged by 15 per cent to USD 7.83 billion in the first 11 months of the last financial year, more than doubling the 6.18 per cent growth rate seen in the same period of the previous year.

This upswing comes despite the industry grappling with regulatory challenges from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and rising pricing pressures in the US market.

R Uday Bhaskar, Pharmexcil’s Director General, attributed the robust growth to a recovery after negative export figures in 2022.

“Until FY16, India’s exports were growing at more than twice the rate as we were getting faster approvals of Abbreviated New Drug Applications,”

Bhaskar explained.

“However, the USFDA later not only slowed down its approval rate but the US local market was also sluggish,” he added.

O v e r a l l , I n d i a ’ s t o t a l pharmaceutical exports increased by 9.34 per cent to USD 25.04 billion in the April-February period, compared to USD 22.9 billion in the corresponding period last year The US market remains a crucial destination, absorbing around 30 per cent of India’s total pharma exports.

Industrial and Warehousing sector booms with record leasing activity in Q1 2024

Bhiwandi in Mumbai emerged as the most acve market for Q1 2024

MUMBAI: The industrial and w a r e h o u s i n g s e c t o r i n I n d i a experienced a notable surge in leasing activity during the first quarter of 2024, marking the highest supply increment in the last two years. According to data from Colliers India, new supply reached close to 7 m i l l i o n s q u a r e f e e t , w i t h approximately one-third of Grade A developments concentrated in the Delhi NCR region.

Key industrial and warehousing hubs across the country witnessed buoyant leasing activity, totalling 7 million square feet Mumbai and Chennai emerged as frontrunners in demand, accounting for about 55% of the total share Of particular interest was Chennai, which saw robust leasing activity, nearly doubling its uptake comparedtothesameperiodlastyear

Bhiwandi in Mumbai emerged as the most active market for Q1 2024, with 1.7 million square feet of Grade A d e m a n d , f o l l o w e d c l o s e l y b y Oragadam in Chennai, surpassing leasing activity in Chakan Talegoan in Pune.

Third-party logistics players ( 3 P L ) c o n t i n u e d t o d o m i n a t e industrial and warehousing space occupancy, contributing over 40% to the total demand. Chennai stood out with about 43% of the overall 3PL activity in the top five cities. Retail players also made a significant impact, accounting for 16% of the

demand nationwide, followed by engineering and automobile sectors with 12% each.

Vijay Ganesh, Managing Director of Industrial & Logistics Services at Colliers India, highlighted the evolving consumption patterns, noting that the combined share of retail, engineering, and automobile sectors rose from 26% in Q1 2023 to 40% in Q1 2024, indicating shifting d y n a m i c s a n d e m e r g i n g opportunities in the sector

T h e e - c o m m e r c e s e g m e n t witnessed a remarkable surge, with leasing activity soaring 2 3 times compared to the same period last year This growth trajectory is expected to continue as the focus on digital infrastructure and changing consumer behaviors drive demand for warehouse spaces. Additionally, t h e r i s e o f Q u i c k C o m m e r c e (Q-commerce) players is anticipated to further stimulate demand for larger hub-warehouses.

Retail players also demonstrated heightened interest in warehousing space, with demand more than d o u b l i n g f r o m a y e a r a g o This expansionary activity is fueled by strong retail per for mance across cities, particularly in large department stores, signaling a favorable consumption pattern and promising demand for warehousing space in the coming quarters.

Large-sized deals, defined as

those exceeding 200,000 square feet, accounted for over 50% of the industrial and warehousing space demand in Q1 2024. While 3PL companies continued to dominate this segment, the rise in large deals w a s p r o p e l l e d b y r e t a i l a n d e-commerce players, particularly in Chennai and Mumbai.

Vimal Nadar, Senior Director & Head of Research at Colliers India, expressed optimism regarding the sector’s performance in 2024, citing an upbeat start to the year and improved developer confidence

With a Grade A supply pipeline of approximately 23-25 million square feet for the year, Nadar expects supply to closely align with demand trends across the top five cities.

Despite rising supply and healthy demand, vacancy levels saw a slight increase to 11% by the end of the first quarter, attributed to churn and exits in the industrial and warehousing s p a c e H o w e v e r, a m i d s t t h i s backdrop, rental rates remained range-bound, experiencing an 8% rise in select micro markets of Chennai and Pune.

As the industrial and warehousing sector continues to evolve and adapt to changing market dynamics, stakeholders remain optimistic about its growth trajectory in the coming quarters, driven by sustained demand diversification and robust leasing activity

Basmati turns into $5-b export product

NEW DELHI: Basmati exports have hit a new record both in volume and value during fiscal 2024. As per latest data, shipments during April-Feb crossed the $5.2 billion with volumes touching a new high exceeding 4.67 million tonnes.

While the exports for FY24 will create a new record after incorporating the figures for March, the prevailing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are likely to weigh on shipments in current fiscal. The trade is worried about the emerging situation in Middle East, which accounts for over 70 per cent of the basmati exports.

Sources said the latest conflict in the region between Iran and Israel will pose major headwinds for the Indian exporters in the new financial year “We are keeping our fingers crossed,” trade sources, while declining to hazard any guess on the potential fallout of the escalating conflict. The Indian exporters have already borne the brunt of recent

attacks in the Red Sea region, which has resulted in higher shipping costs and transit time to destinations such as the Europe and the US.

Price rise

However, analysts feel the prevailing tensions may lead to higher exports and prices. “Currently, Iran and Iraq have sufficient stock to prolong if there is a geopolitical fallout. Other Gulf countries, in particular Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and UAE, might not have sufficient stock Therefore, basmati rice exports might witness fresh round of export orders. The prices will also witness significant increase due to a d d i t i o n a l d e m a n d a n d r i s k premium,” said S Chandrasekaran, trade analyst and author of the book Basmati Rice: The Natural History and Geographical Indication.

“In the current fiscal, Iran will increase its rice purchase by 30 per cent The share of basmati rice imports will be dependent on Iranian Government food policy,”

Chandrasekharan added.

In the April-Feb period, the Basmati shipments were up by 22 per cent in value terms. Shipments to Saudi Arabia, the largest buyer, topped $1.1 billion during April-Feb as compared to $920 million in the same period last year In volume terms, the exports to Saudi Arabia were up at 9.61 lakh tonnes (lt) compared with 8.51 lt.

Iraq has emerged as the second largest buyer with both volume and value more than doubling over last year. Iraq bought 7.02 lt of Indian basmati during April-Feb over previous year’s 3.13 lt. Basmati shipments to Iraq were valued at $757 million ($321 million in April-Feb last year).

Iran has been pushed back to the third slot with shipments in value reducing to 6.44 lt during April-Feb (9.27 lt). Basmati exports to Iran were down at $652 70 million during April-Feb as compared to same period last year’s $911 02 million

India fastest growing Economy during last 3 nancial years: Nirmala Sitharaman

NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister Nir mala Sitharaman recently said that India has been the fastest growing economy in the last three consecutive financial years and this growth can continue in the coming years as well. She said the next 25 years will be critical for India. In the financial year 2023-24, India witnessed a growth rate of eight per cent in three quarters and is

expecting a similar level of growth in the fourth quarter, she said, adding it has been a sustainable growth.

“India has been the fastest growing economy in the last three consecutive financial years and this growth can continue in the coming years as well. The next 25 years will be very critical for India,” Sitharaman said in a dialogue programme with industrialists and businessmen.

She said that foreign investors are coming to invest in India due to the credibility of its economy

“Due to the economic policy, larger macroeconomic stability, stable government, stable taxation policy, transparent tenders and procurement, there has been immense credibility of India’s economy abroad. So, the investors are coming here to invest,” she said.

GAIL plans capacity expansion and new LNG Terminals amid surging imports

NEW DELHI: GAIL, India’s largest gas distributor, aims to more than double the capacity of its LNG terminal in Dabhol, Maharashtra, and construct new terminals across the c o u n t r y t o s e i z e u p c o m i n g opportunities in gas imports.

The gas transporter plans to raise the capacity of its Dabhol terminal to 12 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in a phased manner by 2030-31, GAIL Chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta said.

Currently, the terminal operates at around2 9mtpa,althoughitsnameplate capacity is 5 mtpa. This limitation is due to seasonal shutdowns during the monsoon. To address this, the company is constructing breakwater infrastructure to ensure year-round operation

GAIL is also drawing up plans for new LNG import terminals but those are in the preliminary stages, Gupta said.

“Around half the current gas consumption is met by imports and the share is unlikely to come down by 2030. If more gas has to be imported, more terminals will be needed,” Gupta said.

T h e n a t i o n c u r r e n t l y h a s approximately 48 mtpa of LNG import capacity, with an additional 20 mtpa reportedly in development.

“But if the gas goals are to be met, these terminals will not be sufficient, and we will need to add more,” Gupta said, referring to the national goal of increasing the share of natural gas in the primary energy mix to 15 per cent by 2030 from around 6.5 per cent now

The Gover nment’s push to increase natural gas usage in the economy has led to the establishment of several LNG terminals in recent y e a r s H o w e v e r, d e s p i t e t h i s expansion, gas consumption and imports have not kept up, resulting in significant underutilisation of these terminals.

Currently, out of the seven LNG terminals in the country, four operate at less than 25 per cent capacity, and two operate below 40 per cent. Only one terminal, the Dahej terminal, which is India’s oldest and largest, operates at over 95 per cent capacity.

However, the GAIL Chairman e x p r e s s e d h o p e t h a t t h i s underutilisation will gradually be resolved as domestic demand and imports rise.

Jebel Ali Port returns to Top-10 Busiest Container Ports

DUBAI: Alphaliner’s report said the Middle East’s largest container port, Dubai/Jebel Ali, has re-entered the top 10 ranking of global container ports, overtaking Europe’s biggest port and demonstrating the scale of the economic slump in Europe.

Jebel Ali processed 14.47 million TEUs in 2023, up from 13.97 million TEU in 2022, enabling the UAE port to return to the top 10 after dropping out in 2019. Its rise also knocked out the languishing Hong Kong port from the top 10 list, as the territory’s container throughput declined 14% year-onyear, to 14.34 million TEUs.

Hong Kong posted its seventh year of consecutive volume declines and

has now lost a third of its container traffic over the past decade.

Rotterdam had moved ahead of Dubai in 2019, but lost 7% in container volumes in 2023, having handled 13.45 million TEUs, posting a second consecutive year of decrease. Due to sanctions, the Dutch port has been hit by the near-total loss of Russian cargo and Europe’s recession has meant a major contraction in European consumer demand. Volumes are now 9% below 2019 levels.

China’s ports recorded another strong year of growth with Qingdao recording the highest increase of any major gateway worldwide. It handled an estimated 30 million TEUs in 2023

(December 2023 figure estimated following a change in Chinese reporting rules) and is now vying with Shenzhen, which handled 29.9 million TEUs, for the position of fourth largest container port in the world. Alphaliner remarked, “Chinese growth is not expected to be as robust in 2024, with Western demand weakening in the fourth quarter, although exports to Russia remain strong. Nevertheless, China’s grip on the global market tightened in 2023, comprising more than half (51%) of the top 30 market throughput versus 49% in 2022. Overall, the top 30 ports recorded average growth of 1.7% during the year, an improvement in 2022 ”

PHDCCI lauds India’s exports resilience

NEW DELHI: Despite several adverse events, such as disruptions in the global supply chains, tussles in the Red Sea, escalation in geopolitical developments and high interest rates, and voilatlity in commodity prices, India’s exports are able to make a positive move in 2023–24. The exports

increased from USD 776.4 in 2022–23 to USD 776.6 in 2023–24, said Mr. Sanjeev Agrawal, President, PHDCCI in a press statement issued recently

We look forward to a great growth trajectory in the current financial year 2024-25 at the back of increased

demand for Indian goods in foreign markets, supported by the ease of doing exports in the country As supply chains become stronger with the Middle East and European markets, the export trajectory is expected to perform better in the current financial year, said Mr. Agrawal.
