India's merchandise exports in November stood at $32.11 billion
N E W D E L H I : I n d i a ' s
m e r c h a n d i s e t r a d e d e f i c i t i n November widened to an all-time high of $37.84 billion from $27.1 billion in October, as the nation’s import bill ballooned and exports declined.
India's merchandise exports increased by 2 17% year-on-year in the April to November period, the Government data showed, while imports rose at a higher pace of 8.35%, widening the country's trade deficit
India's merchandise exports in November stood at $32 11 billion, while imports were $69.95 billion, as per data In the previous month, merchandise exports were at $39 2 billion and imports stood at $66.34 billion.
Gold imports in November r e a c h e d a n a l l - t i m e h i g h o f USD 14.8 billion.
In October, the merchandise trade deficit stood at $27.14 billion.
The fall in petroleum exports pulled down the November goods exports, Sunil Barthwal, Commerce Secretary, said at a press briefing. Petroleum exports fell due to price effect, he added.
Economists had expected the country's November trade deficit to be $23 9 billion, according to a Reuters poll.
A widening trade deficit may put further pressure on India’s currency, which weakened 0 5% against the dollar last month, marking its worst month since March.
According to trade experts, a deficit is not always bad, if a country is importing raw materials or intermediary products to boost m a n u f a c t u r i n g a n d e x p o r t s However, it puts pressure on
the domestic currency. Economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that a bilateral trade deficit with a country isn't a major issue unless it makes us overly reliant on that country's critical supplies However, a rising overall trade deficit is harmful to the economy
I n d i a h a s b e e n r e c o r d i n g sustained trade deficits since 1980 mainly due to the strong imports growth, particularly of mineral fuels, oils and waxes and bituminous substances and pearls, precious and semi-precious stones and jewellery. In recent years, the biggest trade deficits were recorded with China, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Indonesia. India records trade surpluses with the US, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and Vietnam.
Merchandise Exports decline by 4.85% in Nov (YoY) to $ 32 bn on the back of continuing global economic uncertainties and export promotion support: FIEO
N E W D E L H I :
Responding to November, 2024 merchandise exports of USD 32.11 billion, which declined by 4.85%, FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar said that such a dip in exports is mainly on the back of continuing global e c o n o m i c u n c e r t a i n t i e s Mr Kumar further added that the o n g o i n g i n t e r n a t i o n a l t r a d e disruptions along with the volatility in crude and metal prices have also played key role in the declining value of exports to some extent. The rising tensions between Israel-Iran has continuously led to logistical c h a l l e n g e s w i t h r e g a r d t o international trade getting impacted as most of our trade to Europe, Africa, CIS and Gulf region are happening through the Red Sea route or the gulf
region prompting buyers to have little large inventories FIEO President also said that the challenges with regard to trade finance still remains the key for the MSMEs as it is really impacting the competitiveness of Indian products in the global markets.
FIEO Chief said that imports increased by 27% to $69.95 billion in November compared to $55.06 billion in the year-ago month, mainly on account of gold imports in November, which reached an all-time high of $14.8 billion, thereby resulting in a trade deficit of $37.84 billion during the month.
FIEO President further reiterated that the urgent and immediate need of the hour is to take steps on the liquidity front with deeper interest subvention support and extension of interest equalisation scheme for at
least 5 years, creating a predictable business environment for the exporters. The imposition of cap of Rs 50 lakh per company in the Interest Equalisation Scheme has hit many MSMEs and they are unable to decide on order with nonavailability of further subvention Mr Ashwani Kumar demanded immediate restoration of the Intertest Equalisation Scheme with a cap of Rs 10 Crore for all MSMEs and 410 tariff lines for a period of 5 years. Besides, Government should also extend the RoDTEP benefits to all sector of exports. Conclusion of some of the key FTAs including UK, Peru, Oman and Sri Lanka should also soon see the light of the day, which FIEO has been urging to the government for quite some time now, added Mr Kumar.
MFN status suspension by Switzerland not to impact EFTA trade pact with India: Commerce Secretary
NEW DELHI: Swiss suspension of the most favoured nation clause in the D o u b l e Ta x a t i o n Av o i d a n c e Agreement (DTAA) will not have any impact on the commitments signed in a trade agreement between India and the EFTA bloc, a top Government official said.
The Swiss gover nment has suspended the most favoured nation (MFN), which could potentially impact Swiss investments in India and lead to higher taxes on Indian companies operatingintheEuropeannation
I n d i a a n d t h e f o u r- n a t i o n European Free Trade Association (EFTA) signed the agreement in M a r c h . I t s m e m b e r s a r e Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
Switzerland is the largest trading partner of India, followed by Norway in the bloc.
"On EFTA, there is no impact," Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal told reporters here when asked whether the Swiss decision would i m p a c t t h e U S D 1 0 0 b i l l i o n investment commitment of the EFTA bloc under the trade pact with India.
I n d i a a n d t h e f o u r- n a t i o n European bloc signed a free trade agreement under which New Delhi received an investment commitment of USD 100 billion in 15 years from the grouping while allowing several products like Swiss watches, chocolates and cut and polished
diamonds at lower or zero duties. T h e b l o c c o m m i t t e d a n investment of USD 100 billion -USD 50 billion within 10 years after the implementation of the agreement and another USD 50 billion in the next five years -- which would facilitate the creation of 1 million direct jobs in India. This is a first-of-its-kind pledge agreed upon in any of the trade deals signed by India so far
The commitment is the key substance of the TEPA (Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement), which took almost 16 years to conclude, for India in return for opening its markeats for several products coming from the EFTA nations.
Dedicated Freight Corridors set to streamline freight movement during Maha Kumbh 2025
PRAYAGRAJ: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is reshaping India’s logistics landscape through its ambitious Eastern and Western Freight Corridors These corridors are enhancing the nation’s freight capacity, cutting transit times, and driving economic growth by creating seamless connectivity between industries and regions. As India gears up for the Maha Kumbh 2025, the Dedicated Freight Corridors will play a major role to alleviate congestion, streamline passenger train services, and ensure efficient freight transport during the world’s largest religious gathering.
The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), a major part of DFCCIL’s network, plays a pivotal role in Uttar Pradesh, covering over 1,000 kilometers By transferring 100% of goods trains to the EDFC, DFCCIL is not only decongesting passenger routes but also enabling additional special trains to cater to the influx of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh 2025
A t t h e h e a r t o f D F C C I L’ s operations is the state-of-the-art Operational Control Center (OCC) in Prayagraj. This facility serves as a centralized hub for monitoring and managing train operations along the
EDFC. With advanced technologies like Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) and automation, the OCC ensures real-time monitoring, precise scheduling, and enhanced safety These systems, comparable to those used in European and Australian railways, significantly reduce the risk of collisions and maximize freight capacity
During an inspection of the OCC, Honorable Minister of Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the transformative potential of these technologies in revolutionizing Indian rail logistics. Highlighting the role of automation, the minister pointed out that what once required extensive h u m a n i n t e r v e n t i o n i s n o w streamlined with automatic signaling systems, a leap forward in rail infrastructure.
With millions of pilgrims expected to converge in Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, DFCCIL’s strategic freight reallocation to the EDFC is crucial. This measure will free up passenger routes, allowing the Indian Railways to run additional special trains for devotees. The streamlined operations will ensure that both freight and passenger services function without disruption during the event.
DFCCIL’s contributions go beyond the Maha Kumbh 2025. By adopting
cutting-edge technologies, enhancing safety protocols, and introducing innovative freight services, the c o r p o r a t i o n i s s e

UK-India business boosted by prospect of trade deal : HSBC
LONDON: Business between the UK and India has boomed this year as firms in both countries anticipate their governments will be able to seal a free trade agreement, HSBC Holdings Plc data showed.
In the nine months to October, HSBC’s UK unit received 36% more business client referrals from its arm in India than a year earlier, data from the bank showed on Monday That includes Indian clients who want to set up a company in the UK, establish a subsidiary or make an acquisition. Payments received from India by UK clients climbed by 121%, with a 32% rise in flows in the opposite direction.
“The free trade agreement is being talked about, when I speak to clients — their interest is in how does it relate to them,” McLaren said in an interview. “Anything that gives certainty to businesses around the future outlook is helpful because in making decisions, one of the enemies is uncertainty or volatility.”
The positive snapshot from the only UK bank to have a significant presence in both markets comes as the two nations prepare to relaunch n e g o t i a t i o n s o n a f r e e t r a d e agreement in January. Talks which then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson hoped would conclude by Diwali in October 2022 are still dragging on more than two years and three British premiers later, and have been on hold since the UK’s July 4 general election.

Conservatives in July — will welcome the rise in Indian interest in the UK
The premier has sought to market the UK as an attractive place for overseas capital, holding a high-profile international investment summit in October as he pledges to fire up growth.
The bank’s growth in business between India and the UK has been driven in part by the “massive” potential for a trade deal between the two nations, according to Cora McLaren, HSBC UK’s head of international subsidiary banking She said that even absent a deal, the ongoing commitment of the two countries to securing one after 14 rounds of talks boosts confidence in bilateral trade.
India has more protectionist policies than Britain, imposing an import tariff on Scotch whisky of 150%, for example During his previous presidential term, Donald Trump called India the “king” of tariffs, but with the US president-elect now threatening his own levies of up to 20% on all goods imported to the US — Britain’s biggest individual trading partner — it’s becoming increasingly important for the UK to broaden trade with other nations.
McLaren said that concluding a trade deal would encourage British c o m p a n i e s t o s e a r c h o u t opportunities in India that could ultimately help the UK reach its growth targets: Starmer is aiming for the UK to have the highest sustained rate of growth in the G7

India’s economy ends 2024 on strong note as business growth hits 4-month high, PMI shows
MUMBAI: India’s private sector output grew at the fastest pace in four months, preliminary readings from a survey showed, helping the economy e n d 2 0 2 4 o n a p o s i t i v e n o t e underpinned by sturdier demand in services and manufacturing and record jobs growth.
Asia’s third-largest economy grew a softer 5.4 per cent last quarter, but easing inflation is expected to spur demand among private sector firms, improving the outlook for next year.
Monday’s HSBC’s December flash India Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, rose to 60.7 this month –matching August’s reading – after dropping to 58.6 in November
The 50-level separates growth from contraction and the business activity index has been above 60 in all but three months this year. Such strength hasn’t been seen since 2008 when the global financial crisis hit, suggesting strong privatesectorexpansion
“The small rise in the headline manufacturing PMI in December was mainly driven by gains in current p r o d u c t i o n , n e w o r d e r s a n d employment,” said Ines L am, economist at HSBC.
“The expansion in new domestic orders quickened, suggesting a pickup in growth momentum in the economy.”
A stronger rise in demand was mainly reflected in the PMI for the
dominant services sector, which rose to a four-month high of 60.8 from 58.4 in November, while the index for manufacturing was 57.4, up from 56 5 last month
Service providers led the rise in sales with the new business sub-index touching the highest since January Improving international demand for goods and services also boosted sales with the former recording a faster increase than the latter
That improved the business outlook for 2025 and overall optimism rose to its highest since September last year and prompted companies to ramp up hiring additional staff at the fastest pace since the survey began in late 2005.
