WASHINGTON: India’s rice exports may decline to 19.5 mt in 2023 from a record 21 mt of shipment this year, theUnitedStatesDepartmentof Agriculture (USDA) has stated in its outlook.
The USDA said the fall in exports is mainly because of an anticipated decline in India’s rice production due to deficiency in monsoon rainfall in the key grain growing states in easternIndia.
While projecting a marginal declineof0.4mtinglobalricetradeto 53 mt 2in 023, USDA has said that
despite the Government in September announcing a 20% export tariff on non-basmati and nonparboiled rice shipment, ‘India remains the most competitivelypricedsourceforriceinAsia,’.
India banned broken rice exports, usedasanimalfeedinSeptember.
Officials said that India would continue to be the largest exporter of thegrainintheworldnextyearaswell despiteadeclineinshipment.
India has been the world’s largest rice exporter in the last decade — exportearningsstoodat$8.8billionin
the2020-21financialyear(April-June) and $ 9.6 billion in 2021-22. In the currentfiscal(April-Sept),$5.4billion worth of rice (11 mt) has been exported. India accounts for around 40%ofglobalricetradeandexportsto morethan150countries.

NEWDELHI:TheApparelExport Promotion Council of India (AEPC) Chairman Naren Goenka on Wednesday said that they are focusing on pushing garment exports to Australia, New Zealand and other islandcountriesintheOceanicregion.
While speaking about the AEPC members that are participating in Australia’s International Sourcing Expo, Goenka said that the expo is a huge platform for the Indian garment exporters to showcase best apparel designs and styles in line with the latest fashion trends in a wide range of traditional cotton and MMF (manmadefibre)garments.
He said that Australia has traditionallybeenthetopmosttrading partner for Indian garment with our exports occupying a share of about 4 per cent of total Australian garment imports.
“We foresee a stronger presence intheAustralianmarketappreciating therecentlyconcludedIndo-Australia tradeagreement,”hesaid.
The free trade agreement would open huge business opportunities for Australian clothing brands to source from India considering the strengths of the domestic garment industry in terms of variety of raw material availability,Goenkaadded.
WithtotalgarmentimportsofUSD 7.39 billion against India’s exports of USD 0.29 billion, Indian garment industry has a huge scope for Australian companies to source from India.
‘Goenka further pointed out that we are supported by the world’s second largest spinning and weaving capacity, giving the industry an opportunityfora95percentdomestic valueaddition.

NEW DELHI : India Inc is set to get a relief in logistics costs with international freight rates plunging by about 30% in April-October 2022 as compared to the previous year. Trade was severely impacted last year, with freight prices sky-rocketing up to 200%, hurting profits of companies across sectors, including engineering, auto components, pharmaandmedicaldevices.
The industry was brought to a virtual standstill in October 2021 with a massive shortage of shipping containers globally. However, in October 2022, the trend has been reversed. The declining rates of containerpricesindicateaweakening demandandexcesssupply.
The fall is being attributed to overalllowdemand, globalheadwinds andadeclineinexports.
India’s exports fell 16.6% in October to $29.8 billion, with a sharp contraction in gems & jewellery, engineering goods, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, accordingtoofficial datareleasedonNovember15.
Over the last six months, prices of containers have been steadily droppinginIndia’sbiggestportssuch
asMundraandNhavaSheva.Average container prices in India dipped over 16%inOctoberYoYto$3,363,whilethe decline for the January-October 2022 period is over 22%, according to data from Container xChange, an online containerlogisticsplatform.
“India has weathered the rising globaldisruptionswithmoreresilience than many other countries. However, the ripple effect of disruptions well over past two years has caused significant market and container imbalances in the Indian shipping industry. Companies have slowed ordering (and carriers cancelling sailings) due to low demand and high inventories, demand will bounce back once these inventories exhaust. Thedecliningratesofcontainerprices indicate a weakening demand, and a surplus(ofcontainers).
The wider this gap, the lower the containerratesandprices,”Christian Roeloffs, cofounder&CEO,Container xChangesaid.
CareEdge Ratings Director Maulesh Desai said steel, automobile and pharmaceutical industriesarethemajorbeneficiaries due to the drop in dry bulk and
container freight rates. “CareEdge Ratings expects 18-20% reduction in freightcostforthesecompanies”.
The benefit of decline in freight cost shall be negated in engineering and textile sectors, due to the global economic slowdown,” he said. However, average container prices are still 2-3 times higher compared to pre-pandemic levels. In June 2022, average container prices were up by nearly three times as compared to $1,675inJune2020.
The government’s high export duties on rice (15%) and steel (20%), and the Russia Ukraine war are also causing disruptions in global shipping, according to Container xChange. Manish Shah of logistics serviceproviderMagnumCargo, said that both air and ship freight has declinedbyabout30%year-on-year.
Container traffic at major domestic ports including Nhava Sheva, Kochi, and Chennai is dropping. Box volumes in the Indian portsreportedlydroppedfrom977,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units, a measure of volume in 20ft long containers)inAugustto892,000TEUs inSeptember.
