City of Hamburg and MSC establish Long-term Strategic Partnership – Hamburg-controlled HHLA Port Terminal and Logistics Group to be operated as a Joint Venture

• The City of Hamburg maintains a 50.1% stake in HHLA, MSC intends to hold up to 49.9% • MSC commits to increase terminal throughput to 1,000,000 TEU from 2031 onwards as well as to establish its German headquarters in Hamburg

HAMBURG: The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S A (“MSC”) have entered into a binding Memorandum of Understanding with respect to a strategic partnership regarding Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft (“HHLA”). MSC intends to acquire all free-floating A-Shares of HHLA and announces the intention to launch a voluntary public takeover offer at EUR 16,75 per A-Share (57% premium to 30-day volume weighted average price). HHLA is to be operated as a strategic joint venture, with the City of Hamburg holding a stake of 50.1% and MSC ultimately holding a stake of 49.9%.

In the course of the partnership, MSC will substantially increase its container volume at HHLA terminals in Hamburg, beginning in 2025 and raising it to at least 1,000,000 TEU per year from 2031 onwards. In addition, MSC will establish its new German headquarters with several hundred employees in Hamburg. Furthermore, MSC and the City of Hamburg also agree to commit on a long-term investment plan to be developed in alignment with HHLA

The aim of the partnership is to establish a strong and well-funded basis for the further development of HHLA and the entire Port of Hamburg, making it a central hub for MSC’s globally connected network of container services and logistics chains. MSC thereby acquires a strategic share in a leading European logistics company, with a network of container terminals in Hamburg, Odessa, Tallinn and Trieste, excellent hinterland connections, railway-company METRANS and well-connected intermodal hubs in Central and Eastern Europe.

MSC has been investing heavily in developing its portfolio of intermodal solutions, including rail which spans from Sines (Portugal) to Trieste (Italy), and has been working to shift more cargo from road to rail in line with its shoreside decarbonization aims.

The agreement would also see MSC expand its terminal portfolio. Through its subsidiary Terminal Investments Limited (TiL) MSC operates 70 terminals across the world, including terminals in Antwerp, Singapore, and Rotterdam To further grow its global terminal footprint, MSC has also acquired AGL (Africa Global Logistics), a logistics provider with a strong presence on the African continent with intermodal solutions and 21 port concessions. In addition to its fleet of 760 vessels, MSC is currently implementing a robust fleet modernization plan and expects to take delivery of more than 90 newbuildings over the next three years, including the 24,000+ TEU Celestino Maresca class vesselsthatarethemostfuelefficientbydesign.

Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Soren Toft, CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company stated: “The City of Hamburg and MSC have had a close bond for decades. We are excited tobuild onthislong-standingpartnershiptodayby integrating the City of Hamburg and Germany even closer into ourglobalocean freight network and diversified intermodal footprint across Europe. This deal not only expandsMSC’s globalreach, but also unlocks the trade

potential for the City of Hamburgand Germany. As a family-ownedcompanywe are fully accountable to our employees, customers and partners. Weemploy a longterm view and this partnership is an exciting step for MSC to grow its long-term presence in Hamburg and Germany.”

Dr Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg: “The strategic partnership between the City of Hamburg and one of the world's leading shipping companies, MSC, is a milestone in the further development of our port. It reflects MSC's strong commitment to the Port of Hamburg, is in line with the Senate's strategic port policy goals and can give our entire maritime economy the boost it needs in difficult times.”

Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator of Economy, City of Hamburg: “The Port of Hamburg is one of Europe's largest industrial sites, where goods are not only shipped and transhipped, but also processed. We are committed to its development – to take this forward, we are joining forces with the world's leading container shipping company By leveraging MSC's expertise in maritime logistics, we aim to drive forward the digitalization and the transformation of logistics in the Port of Hamburg, ensuring prosperity and job security I am convinced that the Mediterranean Shipping Company is a most reliable and trustworthy partner for the development we envisage."

Dr Andreas Dressel, Senator of Finance, City of Hamburg: “Hamburg continues to retain the majority of the shares and be HHLA’s major shareholder via the holding company of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. At the same time, we are increasing strategic impact and steering capabilities together with MSC by running the joint-venture as a company directly governed by its two shareholders The employee participation currently in place at HHLA will remain unaffected by the planned transaction The future governance structure will also be secured on a partnership basis The City of Hamburg will retain the right to nominate the CEO and chair of the Supervisory Board of HHLA Today’s agreement secures the public goodandservesthiscities’bestinterests ”

The partnership is stipulated for an indefinite time, with a termination possible after 40 years at the earliest. Both partners agree that this partnership is and should remain open to all other past and future partners of the Port of Hamburg, HHLA and its terminals.

As a next step MSC will draft the takeover offer document. The takeover offer document will be submitted within the next four weeks for approval by the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin) which will take approximately 10 working days Immediately after the approval the offer document will be published (expected for the second half of October). During the following four-week offer period, that will be followed by a mandatory two-week period, investors can decide to accept the offer The closing of the offer will be subject to regulatory approval, and approval by the Parliament of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Kolkata Port berths largest-ever vessel in its history at Haldia

KOLKATA: As the ropes grew taut and the 249 9-metre long and 44 05metre wide behemoth inched closer to Haldia Oil Jetty (HOJ)-3 on Thursday, there was cheer all around.

This was the largest vessel to have ever berthed at Syama P rasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata in its over 150-year history

The MT Clearocean Ajax is a Large Crude Carrier with a capacity of 113,252 tonnes. When she berthed at HOJ-3, she carried 48,111 tonnes of Naptha. This was also a record. This was the highest ever single parcel load for Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL). The highest single parcel load of Naptha handled by SMP , Kolkata till now was 44,088 tonnes. This was in 2017 from the tanker MT Sanmer Sonnet.

The four-year-old MT Clearocean Ajax flies the Monrovian flag and has a crew of 22. All of them are Georgian, including the Master Mikhail Klimovith. She set sail from Port Mina al Ahmadia in Kuwait with 82,271 tonnes of Naptha. Of this, 34,160 tonnes were discharged at Visakhapatnam before she sailed north towards the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) under SMP , Kolkata.

HDC is located 125 km from the Sandheads where SMP , Kolkata carries out lighterage operations from vessels that are too large or heavy to enter the Hooghly channel that suffers from draught constraints.

“This is certainly a remarkable achievement. The MT Clearocean Ajax reached Haldia at 8.7-metre draught. We manage and maintain one of the

longest and unpredictable navigation channels in the world Despite the draught constraint, SMP , Kolkata has maintained its pivotal position among the major ports in India.

“I congratulate all employees and o t h e r s t a k e h o l d e r s o n t h i s achievement. I am sure that this will pave the way forward for other such vessels to berth at our oil jetties to facilitate easier supply to refineries located at Haldia,” Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMP, Kolkata said.

DPIIT deliberates with North Zone States/UTs on PM GatiShakti National Master Plan

NEW DELHI: To encourage greater utilization of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP) amongst the States/UTs, the Logistics Division, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry organizes weekly meetings These meetings involve discussions with the nodal officers/ representatives from different States and Union Territories (UTs) to assess their advancements in assets mapping and project planning using the National Master Plan.

A review meeting was convened for the North Zone States/UTs, chaired by Special Secretary (Logistics), DPIIT, Ms. Sumita Dawra yesterday in virtual mode The meeting witnessed active participation from States/UTs viz

Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, L a d a k h , H a r y a n a , D e l h i , a n d Uttarakhand. She began the meeting by expressing appreciation for the good work done by the States/UTs and requested presentations on use cases that have emerged from them.

During the meeting, the Special Secretary (Logistics) encouraged the North Zone States/UTs to utilize the PM GatiShakti SMP (State Master Plan) for area development. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis can be conducted by the States/UTs to identify gaps in social, infrastructure, and logistics for area development planning. The challenge of first- and last-mile connectivity faced by most of the Northern States/UTs due to hilly terrain can be addressed by using

infrastructure and social sector projects. This will result in benefits related to ease of doing business, ease of living, and ease of service delivery, g r e a t l y e n h a n c i n g b u s i n e s s investments and tourism.

She emphasized that the 'Whole of Government' approach which breaks departmental silos will also benefit in developing the ‘Vibrant Village’ of Northern States like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand,UnionTerritoryofLadakh

The Special Secretary highlighted that, in accordance with the guiding principles of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, NMP will offer multimodal connectivity for socioeconomic development, facilitating area development, and first and lastmile connectivity to the remotest area for service delivery

India needs efficient Multi-Modal transport system: President

N E W D E L H I : P r e s i d e n t Droupadi Murmu recently said the country needs an efficient multi-modal transport system for which rail, road, air and water transportation should be dealt with in a holistic approach rather than in isolation. Addressing a group of 213 probationers (2019, 2020 and 2021 batches) from different services of the Indian Railways at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre here, she said unlike any commercial organisation the railways is a social lifeline of the country

Besides, it carries the dreams of ordinary people and at the same time,

showcases nation’s diversity, the president said.

“The country needs an efficient multi-modal transport system for which rail, road, air and water transportation should be dealt with a holistic approach and not in isolation.

“ I u r g e y o u a l l t o w o r k i n coordination with the officers of other departments also for achieving the goal of an atmanirbhar and developed

probationers.

Asserting that the technological changes are taking place at an

unprecedented speed and scale, she asked the officers to work collectively and make the railways a future-ready organisation.

Murmu said trains and their journeys have always been an important part of people’s lives.

India aims Logistics Performance Index ranking in Top 25 by 2030 : Special Secretary (Logistics)

Cont’d. from Pg. 3

The DPIIT is also in talks with World Bank as well as International Monetary Fund to change the methodology while calculating the ranking under LPI.

“At the moment, the world bank’s LPI is based on a very subjective analysis. We are trying to bring in objectivity by impressing upon world bank how we are using technology to improve logistics in the country by way of Unified Logistics Integration Platform (ULIP),” Dawra added. She was speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi.

Dawra said that DPIIT officials have been continuously engaging with officials of the World Bank to draw their attention to the need for greater emphasis on objective-based methodology for LPI scoring. The World Bank uses six parameters to measure performance of countries that include customs, infrastructure,

international shipments, logistics competence, tracking and tracing, and timelines.

“We feel this is a very narrow way of ranking India on important global indices and there is a lot of work going on and that should be reflected in the calculations. We have analyzed the parameters and the way it is done. We would like the World Bank to include our interventions and reforms which are contributing to improve logistics in India,” Dawra said during a press briefing.

She also said that the report on a framework to assess the logistics cost in the country is ready and it would be released by the end of the month as it would help get a realistic estimate of the cost.

As per Government’s estimates, India’s logistics cost stands at 8-14% of the country’s GDP (gross domestic product).

”Now we have a baseline estimate

and from next year we will do a survey based thing to calculate the cost,” she said, adding that the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and ADB have been engaged in the exercise.

Dawra added that the service improvement group constituted in March to resolve logistics related issues has so far assessed 80 issues from different departments including revenue, railways, and road.

India’s Exports decline 7% to $34.48 billion in August

NEW DELHI: India’s merchandise exports contracted for a seventh consecutive month in August, declining 6 9 per cent year-on-year to $34 48 billion, owing to weak external demand, data released by the Commerce D e p a r t m e n t s h o w e d r e c e n t l y . The Government, however, said that exports had started “stabilising” and “greenshoots” were clearly visible.

The merchandise trade deficit, or the gap between exports and imports, on the other hand, widened to a 10-month high of $24.16 billion in August as higher crude oil prices and robust domestic demand led to a nearly 11 per cent jump in imports on a sequential basis.

Imports stood at $58.64 billion last month, down 5.2 per cent year-on-year While exports and imports have been declining since the beginning of 2023, the pace of contraction has slowed July onwards, the data showed.

C o m m e r c e S e c r e t a r y S u n i l Barthwal said a high base of last year also affected the contraction in exports. While falling commodity prices this year impacted the value of exports, they remained positive in terms of volume, he added.

“ Pe s s i m i s m i s t u r n i n g i n t o optimism now as greenshoots are clearly visible. The industry said their export orders were better and they were also optimistic about export order books. This month (in August), at least last month’s (July’s) story is repeating.

T h i s m e a n s t h a t t h e r e ’ s a n improvement in terms of the global exports scenario,” Barthwal said in a media briefing.

On the brighter side, non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports, also known as core exports, reversed their trend of contraction and grew 3.2 per cent in August to $26 billion.

Barthwal said that going ahead,

firming oil prices might impact commodity prices, which, in turn, could impact exports.

Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA, said that with the monthly merchandise trade deficit prints a v e r a g i n g m u c h h i g h e r d u r i n g July-August vis-à-vis April-June 2023, India’s current account deficit is likely to widen in Q2FY24 from $10-12 billion expected in Q1FY24.

Merchandise exports witnessed contraction in 15 out of the 30 key sectors in August. Key export items that dipped in August included petroleum products (-30.61 per cent), gems and jewellery (-21.94 per cent), readymade gar ments (-8 15 per cent), and organic and inorganic chemicals (-18.83 per cent).

Among key sectors that experienced growth included electronic goods (26.29 per cent) and engineering goods (7.73 per cent).

Sluggish Global economic & demand in EU, UK and China coupled with subdued growth in US & Australia led to modest performance in Exports: FIEO

N E W D E L H I :

Reacting to the overall A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 e x p o r t figures of USD 34 48 billion (with a decline of 6 86 percent) compared to August 2022, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said that sluggish global economic contraction and demand specially in major economies like EU, UK and China coupled with the subdued growth in economies like US and Australia has led to such a modest performance in exports during the recent months. Manufacturing across the Euro Zone and the US has also contracted due to persistent policy tightening measures by both the US Fed and the European Central Bank s q u e e z i n g f i n a n c e s , a d d e d Dr A Sakthivel. As Asian economies are showing mixed bags, countries across the continent have struggled t o m a i n t a i n t h e m o m e n t u m .

The softening of the commodity prices across the globe have also pulled down value-wise exports Countries are showing decline in exports including China whose exports have contracted by almost 9 percent in August 2023. Moderation in pace of growth in merchandise exports significantly in 2023 has been m a i n l y b e c a u s e o f o n g o i n g

geopolitical tensions, disruption in global supply chain due to RussiaUkraine war, monetary tightening and recessionary fears, which has continuously led to a fall in consumer spendings across the globe especially in advanced economies, reiterated FIEO President.

FIEO Chief added that we are of the view that exports will start showing better growth numbers, as things are expected to improve in the next few months with more fresh orders coming and order bookings for the Christmas and New Year season.

15 out of 30 key products sectors, which have shown positive growth during the month of August 2023, include Iron Ore, Oil Meals, Ceramic Products & Glassware, Electronic Goods, Cotton Yarn/Fabs./Made-Ups, Handloom Products Etc., Tobacco, Oil Seeds, Meat, Dairy & Poultry

P r o d u c t s , C a s h e w, F r u i t s & Ve g e t a b l e s , C a r p e t , C e r e a l Preparations & Miscellaneous Processed Items, Engineering Goods, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals and Marine Products FIEO Chief said that though the decline in imports is a good sign for the country, however, that has also led to de-growth in our key export sectors like petroleum products, gems & jewellery, organic &

inorganic chemicals etc.

FIEO President further reiterated that the need of the hour is to provide further momentum to the economy through easy and low cost of credit to the MSMEs, long-pending demand for marketing support for promoting Brand India products and services globally and GST exemption on Freight on exports Besides, the interest equalisation support across all sectors of export and providing further extension to the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme by one more year till March 31, 2024, will provide much needed cushion during such tough and challenging times And last but not the least, greeting and congratulating the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, Dr Sakthivel said that with the grand and successful completion of the G20 Summit under the PM's dynamic and able leadership, the world has seen the growing diplomatic strength of India and the key role it plays across globe. In line with that the trade and industry would like to see important FTAs with UK and EU along with GCC Countries for which the negotiations are expected to be started soon, to see the light of the day to further provide much needed boost to the sector, said Dr A Sakthivel.

Imports from Russia doubles to $25.69 billion in April-August

NEW DELHI: The country's imports from Russia almost doubled to USD 25 69 billion during the April-August period this fiscal due to increasing inbound shipments of crude oil and fertiliser, according to the commerce ministry data With this, Russia has become India's second-largest import source during the first five months of this fiscal.

The imports were USD 13.77 billion during April-August 2022 From a market share of less than 1 per cent in India's import basket before the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russia's share of India's oil imports rose to over 40 per cent.

India, the world's third-largest

crude importer after China and the United States, has been buying Russian oil that was available at a discount after some in the West shunned it as a means of punishing Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine.

The ministry's data showed that imports from China dipped to USD 42 billion during the period against USD 43.96 billion in the same period last year

Similarly, imports from the US declined to USD 18 billion during the period under review from USD 21.86 billion in April-August 2022.

Imports from UAE too contracted to USD 17 billion during April-August 2023 compared to USD 22.32 billion a year ago.

On the export front, India's exports to six of its top 10 destinations have recorded a negative growth rate during the period.

During the first five months of this fiscal, the country's merchandise exports to the US, UAE, China, Singapore, Germany, and Bangladesh have dipped.

However, exports to the UK, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia have recorded positive growth.

India's exports declined 6 86 per cent to USD 34.48 billion, the seventh month in a row, in August this year due to a fall in shipments from key sectors like petroleum and gems and jewellery on subdued global demand.

Basic Customs duties on 8 US products will continue; only retaliatory tax removed

NEW DELHI: The basic customs duties and other levies will continue on eight products, including apple and walnut from the US as well as other countries, a senior Government official said recently. Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce Peeyush Kumar said that India has imposed retaliatory customs

duties on 28 American products in 2019 against US measure to imposes duties on certain steel and aluminium products.

He added that India has withdrawn only retaliatory duty on these eight products -- chickpeas, lentils, almonds, walnut, apple, boric acid, diagnostic reagents -- in 2023 and its value of

imports into India from the US stood at USD1 08billionin2022-23

Critical years ahead for Container Shipping : Analysts

LONDON: Increasing congestion at container depots and the end of the 2M alliance in January 2025 could see further supply chain disruption and a n o t h e r s h a k e - u p i n c a r r i e r collaboration and operations.

MSC and Maersk announced the break up of their alliance earlier this year, but the fall-out from that decision will not be fully realised until January 2025 when the alliance is formally ended.

Speaking at the Container xChange Digital Container Summit, John Fossey of Drewry Shipping Consultants said, “If in January 2025 the division of 2M leads to four or five stand alone carriers then rates could be very challenged as a result.”

With an excess of capacity still chasing too little freight Fossey said that carriers could revert to the days where they had little price discipline, aiming for market share to make sure their huge newbuildings achieve the maximum utilisation levels.

Supply is set to outstrip demand in every year from 2022 onwards, where growth from that year reached 0 5%, with this year’s growth forecast to be 0 3%

recoveringto2 6%and2 9%in2024-25

In the same period capacity increased by 4.5% in 2022 and is forecast to increase by 5%, 6.35 and 5.2% in 202325. Only in 2021 did demand, at 7%, outperform capacity growth at 4.7%.

According to Fossey Drewry had expected global container movements to pass the 1 billion mark, in 2027, but the pandemic and subsequent events such as the war in Ukraine has seen the consultants revise those forecasts to 935 million teu by 2035.

Senior analyst at Alphaliner Stefan Verberckmoes, is more optimistic pointing out that both Maersk and MSC a r e c a r r i e r s t h a t w a n t t h e i r independence to make operational decisions, but that both carriers are still co-operating with each other

“Both MSC and Maersk have announced independent services since the split of the alliance was announced,” said Verberckmoes, “2M was more of a vessel sharing agreement, and they both said now that they are stopping the vessel sharing agreement, they can start sharing vessels.”

Of course, this is not a new said Alphaliner Hapag-Lloyd already buy

slots on CMA CGM’s FAL 3 service, which is the Ocean Alliance’s fifth loop, butHapagmarkettheserviceastheFe9.

He also pointed out that Maersk and MSC operate six Asia to North Europe loops and they have enough vessels to operate three loops each, while Verberckmoes does not believe that shippers require daily sailings out of Shanghai, Yantian and Ningbo, but that three a week would be acceptable.

I n a d d i t i o n , w i t h t h e I M O regulations on carbon intensity becoming more stringent, Drewry estimates that around 30% of the existing fleet will need to slow steam, that will reduce the effective capacity by around 7%.

Moreover, congestion at container storage depots around the globe could o n c e a g a i n c a u s e d e l a y s t o repositioning containers and getting boxes to the shippers for loading.

Danny Den Boer, from container lessor Seacube, said, “Depot rates in Asia are significantly lower than in the U S w i t h t h e s l o w d o w n i n manufacturing, but depots in the US, particularly on the West Coast are very congested.

Western rms shift investment from China to India as worries mount

LONDON: U S and European firms are shifting investment away from China to other developing markets, a report from Rhodium Group showed, with India receiving the vast majority of this redirected foreign capital, followed by Mexico, Vietnam and Malaysia.

These companies are turning their backs on the world’s second-largest economy even as its share of global growth continues to increase, highlighting how concerns over China’s business environment, economic recovery and politics weigh heavy on themindsofforeigninvestors

The value of announced U.S. and European greenfield investment into India shot up by some $65 billion or 400% between 2021 and 2022, Wednesday’s report said, while investment into China dropped to less

than $20 billion last year, from a peak of $120 billion in 2018.

“Diversification is well underway,” the research organisation said, but acknowledging: “it will take years for advanced economies to achieve the objectives behind their ‘de-risking’ policies,” as China is so central to global supply chains.

Low production costs and the prospect of a massive middle class drew the first foreign firms to China in the late 1980s, as the country abandoned its Maoist economic model But with consumers now tightening their purse strings and production costs continuing to rise, the market is losing its sheen.

The shift comes as Chinese local authorities struggle to revive foreign investment after an economically bruising pandemic and property

crisis depleted their coffers.

Western companies are stepping up greenfield investment in these markets to give them options when sourcing assembled goods and geopolitically sensitive commodities, such as semiconductors, as well as to reduce their dependence on China in their supply chains, the report said.

But the authors cautioned that diversification is unlikely to result in a rapid decline in exposure to China because the markets foreign firms are investing in are heavily reliant on trade and investment with the Asian giant themselves.

As a result: “it would not be surprising to see China’s overall share of global exports, manufacturing and supply chains continue to rise, even as diversification away from China accelerates.”

APM Terminals develops ‘lock arrester’ to keep truck drivers safe

N A V I M U M B A I : A T Gateway Terminals India ( G T I ) , A P M Te r m i n a l s operation in Mumbai, around 3 , 5 0 0 t r u c k s e n t e r t h e terminal every day. Some had become accustomed to getting down from their trailer cabin to check if the trailer was unlocked from the container it carried. Their fear was that, if still attached with the l o c k , t h e t r u c k c o u l d b e inadvertently lifted along with the container However, this ‘double check’ of the lock exposed them to risk.

Out of harm’s way

Terminals are extremely busy environments in which giant pieces of machinery move and coordinate with precision. In line with our safety principles, no-one should be exposed to person-machine interface. By hopping out of their cabin, drivers were putting themselves in harm’s way

No shirking on safety

It was a situation that was picked up by Natarajan Swaminathan (Swami), Assistant Manager –Engineering at APM Terminals Mumbai during the Kaikaku Kaizen week earlier this year Kaikaku Kaizen refers to the Japanese-developed business methodology of making fundamental and radical changes to production systems. These periodic events – held throughout our global terminals several times a year – unearth improvement points and ensure we constantly effect greater efficiencies –especially in safety.

Says Swami: “I noticed the behavior of the truck drivers, and I understood their reasoning. But I knew they were not safe. I could not shake the thought – how can we restrict the movement of the trailer lock so that it will remain in position and convince truckers that they have no reason to leave their vehicles.”

LEAN thinking

To crack this nut, Swami organised a ‘try storming’ –a LEAN-inspired working method which encourages learning and experimenting by doing, in a safe context. Swami explains: “Working with a small team, we found that a simple lock arrester kept the lock in place. The trailer locks would not rotate, even if the trailer was empty or exposed to bumpy roads.

“We carried out rigorous testing with 100% success rate. We had an expert pilot driver to simulate all eventualities and were able to demonstrate how it worked with the truck drivers We gained the confidence of the trucking community, and the solution has since been implemented by 100 external trailers. The benefits are being felt not only by our terminal but throughout our operations,” says Swami. Stroke of genius

Swami has been working in the Electrical Maintenance of Container Handling and Mobile equipment for the past 20 years, over 15 years of which have been with APM Terminals. “I have always enjoyed providing technical solutions for improving safety standards and saving operational costs.

“I feel very humbled that this idea is now standard procedure for truck drivers. They have no need to leave the safety of their truck cabin – I can’t tell you how gratified I am to know that. It’s honestly been a highlight of my entire career so far Something to tell the grandkids.”

EU Commission President Names Landmark Methanol Vessel “Laura Mærsk”

C O P E N H A G E N : The World’s first methanolenabled container vessel will carry the name “Laura Mærsk”, the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed at a ceremony in Copenhagen recently.

The name was revealed in the Port of Copenhagen on Thursday during a ceremony, when the ship’s godmother, President von der Leyen, christened the vessel by breaking a champagne bottle over the bow Besides the godmother, Maersk Chair Robert Uggla and Maersk Chief Executive Ofcer Vincent Clerc also spoke at the ceremony.

“Laura Maersk is a historic milestone for shipping across the globe. It shows the entrepreneurial spirit that has characterized Maersk since the founding of the company However, more importantly this vessel is a very realproof point that when we as an industry unite through determined efforts and partnerships, a tangible and optimistic path toward a sustainable future emerges. This new green vessel is the breakthrough we needed, but we still have a long way to go before we make it all the way to zero,”said Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk.

“Laura” is a proud Maersk name deeply rooted in some of the company’s very early innovative landmarks WhenCaptainPeterMaerskMollerboughthisfirststeamship in1886,henamedher“Laura” Withitssteamengine,“Laura”

was a product of the second industrial revolution, making its impactontheshippingindustrysignificant

Furthermore, “Laura” was the first vessel to wear the white seven-pointed star on a light blue background. This symbol later would become the logo of A.P Moller - Maersk.

Maersk has an ambitious 2040 target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions and aims to transport a minimum of 25% of Ocean cargo using green fuels by 2030. The 2,100 TEU (twenty-foot-equivalent) feeder vessel is an important step toward the long-term objective of gradually renewing the entire Maersk fleet to operate solely on green fuels. Maersk has 24 additional methanol vessels on order for delivery between 2024 and 2027 and a policy to only order new, owned vessels that come with a green fuel option.
