It is expected to cross the 200 mt mark in cargo handling in FY25, APSEZ said in its volume guidance for the fiscal year that began in April. This will make it the country's first port to achieve this feat.
Globally, a capacity utilisation of 70% is considered the ideal level for ports/terminals to operate efficiently without facing congestion and productivity issues. "At 70% capacity utilisation, the terminal works at full efficiency Above that, the efficiency drops, and delays start occurring," said a port industry insider
With the port growing in double digits over the past few years, putting it on course to reach the full rated capacity soon, APSEZ had applied to the Expert
Appraisal Committee (EAC) attached to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to raise the capacity by 289 mt to 514 mt as part of the expansion of the Waterfront Development Plan spread over 3,335 hectares at Mundra port. The capacity expansion will cater to multi-purpose, liquid, gas and cryogenic cargo. Mundra's expansion is critical for APSEZ's aim to become the world's biggest transport utility and port operator by 2030 Currently, it has a network of 15 ports/terminals in India's coastline with a capacity to handle some 627 mt of cargo a year It also runs the Haifa Port in Israel, a container terminal at the Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania and is building a box terminal at the Colombo Port.

ANTWERP: Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port, and DFDS welcome Port of Antwerp-Bruges to the Green Shipping Corridor and bolsters the green ambitions of the project. By 2030, two ammonia-fuelled ro-ro vessels are expected to operate on the routes between Sweden and Belgium, and the ports will step up efforts on electrification and ammonia bunkering, potentially making it the world's first green ammonia shipping corridor for freight vessels.
2,500 kilometres That is the distance from the northernmost to the southernmost point of the Green Shipping Corridor between Sweden and Belgium that Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port, DFDS and Port of Antwerp-Bruges want to establish to promote near zero emission transport.
The corridor potentially connects 11 European countries through sea, land, and rail routes from Norway in Northern Europe to Spain in the South. In this corridor, the ports of Gothenburg, North Sea Port and Antwerp-Bruges work as transportation hubs as well as important origin and destination zones of industrial activity.
Raised ambitions
The aim is to have at least two DFDS ammonia-fuelled vessels in operation on the Corridor from 2030, a part of DFDS’s ambition to have six low- and near-zeroemission vessels in operation by 2030.
The ammonia-vessels will be complemented by electric trucks and rail transport on land, as well as onshore power supply for the vessels. Therefore, efforts are being intensified by the ports to facilitate electric terminal operations and enable safe ammonia bunkering.
Furthermore, the partners are planning to start producing significant amounts of renewable electricity
The three original partners signed an MoU in 2022 to work together to decarbonise the shipping corridor between Sweden and Belgium and to create a scalable solution. The addition of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges to this coalition strengthens this commitment.
DFDS has applied for funding for a total of four ammoniafuelled vessels and, if the funding is granted, the project including electrification in the ports is expected to reduce 328,000 t CO2e emissions per year corresponding to around
11% of DFDS’s scope 1 GHG emissions compared to 2023. P o r t o f A n t w e r p - B r u g
, VP International networks: “Port of Antwerp Bruges fully endorses the efforts of its customers and partners in prioritizing the greening of operations both at sea and on land. DFDS, an important operator with a daily roll-on/ roll-off freight service to Gothenburg, will contribute to our ambition towards climate-neutral transport in, to and through the port As one of the largest bunker hubs worldwide, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is committed to offering climate-neutral marine fuels and embraces DFDS's innovative approach of utilizing ammonia-powered ro-ro vessels on the corridor.”
Port of Gothenburg, Patrik Benrick, Head of Strategic Development & Innovation: "The Port of Gothenburg is already in the early stages of developing operating regulations for a safe and efficient handling and bunkering of ammonia propelled vessels We are also working on establishing an ammonia value chain, with the purpose of being able to facilitate everything needed for ammonia propelled vessels calling and bunkering in the port on a regular basis in 2030 and beyond."
D F D S , J a c o b A n d e r s e n , Vi c e Pr e s i d e n t , North Sea: “This is a testament to our ambitions and commitment to play an active role in the green transition. We expect this to be the world's first green corridor for Ro-Ro cargo vessels running on near-zero emission ammonia fuel. This transition will not be possible without collaboration. We are working together with more than 50 partners to realise this project which will contribute to a more sustainable future for European shipping, and the ports are a key part of this.”
North Sea Port, Daan Schalck, CEO: “I’m very happy to see our original initiative develop into a wider network and I am committed to build further on our collaborative experience. The Belgian Swedish Green Corridor is an important milestone towards decarbonizing the logistics sector and delivering on European resilience It goes beyond the typical high-level language and includes concrete pledges on which we as a port together with our clients and stakeholders want to deliver.”

APULIA: The Group of Seven i n d u s t r i a l i s e d n a t i o n s h a v e committed to promoting concrete infrastructure initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) in the G7 Summit Communique issued at the end of the three-day G7 Summit, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Prime Minister Modi attended the G7 Summit at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the host.
"We will further promote concrete G7 PGII (Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment) initiatives, flagship projects, and complementary initiatives to develop transformative economic corridors for quality infrastr ucture and investment, such as the deepening of
our coordination and financing for the Lobito Corridor, the Luzon Corridor, the Middle Corridor, and the IndiaMiddle East-Europe Economic Corridor, also building on the EU Global Gateway, the Great Green Wall Initiative, and the Mattei Plan for Africa launched by Italy," reads the communique.
B i l l e d a s a p a t h - b r e a k i n g initiative, the IMEC envisages a vast road, railroad and shipping network among Saudi Arabia, India, the United States and Europe to ensure integration among Asia, the Middle East and the West.
The IMEC is also seen as an initiative by like-minded nations to gain strategic influence in the face of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which has faced increasing criticism
over lack of transparency and disregard for sovereignty of the nations.
The BRI is a mega connectivity project that connects China with Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Russia and Europe.
The IMEC initiative was firmed up on the sidelines of the G20 Summit hosted by India in Delhi last year
About the Outreach session on Friday on the topic of Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa and the Mediterranean addressed by Modi, the Communique reads: "In a spirit of shared responsibility, we warmly welcome the participation of the Leaders of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, India, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritania, Tunisia, Turkiye, and the United Arab Emirates.

NEW DELHI: India's imports from Iraq rose 58.68 per cent to USD 3.76 billion in May, while from the UA E , t h e c o u n t r y ' s i n b o u n d shipments increased by about 50 per cent during the month, according to the commerce ministr y data. Similarly from Russia, the imports rose by 18 per cent to USD 7.1 billion on account of oil imports.
The data showed that the inbound shipments from China during the month were 2.82 per cent higher at USD 8.48 billion.
Among the top 20 import source nations of India, imports from Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong, Australia and Malaysia recorded negative growth in May.
On the export front, India's exports
to South Africa, Italy, Nepal, Belgium and Australia recorded a negative growth rate during the month under review However, exports to the US, the UAE, the Netherlands, the UK, Singapore and Saudi Arabia have recordedpositivegrowth.
The outbound shipments to China rose by 3.35 per cent to USD 1.32 billion in the last month.
NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has put up with the Finance Ministry for the extension of the interest equalisation scheme for the export sector which is expected to expire by this month end. DGFT has observed significant benefits accruing to exports through t h i s s c h e m e w h i c h p r o v i d e s
a subvention of 2% on interest to loans taken by exporters and 3% subvention for MSME exporters. The scheme basically enables exporters of more than 400 products and particularly MSME exporters of all types to obtain bank credit at a subsidised interest rate as provided by the government. Thus the scheme
enables exporters and manufacturers access to cheap credit, improving their competitiveness in the global market While the decision on extension of the scheme is yet to be made, the export community has also demanded increase in the rate of subvention which the Finance Ministry has turned down.
NEW DELHI: According to provisional and advance estimates data released by the Ministry of Ports, S h i p p i n g , a n d Wa t e r w a y s f o r April-May 2024-25, cargo handled at Major Ports increased by 4.02 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to 139 3 mt Whereas cargo handling at India’s major ports was up by 6 per cent in May to 72 million tonnes (mt), buoyed by a 7.3 per cent rise in overseas cargo handling, even as several global factors have constrained supply chains, especially in Asia.
While experts and reports suggest that the current congestion at several Asian ports has benefitted Indian ports in the form of spillover transshipment cargo reaching Indian ports, it remains unclear whether Major Ports have benefitted from this.
In comparison, cargo volumes grew by only 2 per cent in April, and around 4.4 per cent through 2023-24.
In May, crude oil and petroleum, oils and lubricants (POL) products accounted for 29 per cent of the total cargo volumes and registered a near
7 per cent growth. While foodgrains accounted for a smaller base, their movement increased nearly 270 per cent to 431,000 mt.
After a tumultuous 2023-24, Gujarat’s Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) is looking to stage a comeback as a Major Port with the highest cargo handling.
In May, the port’s overseas cargo volumes rose by nearly a fourth (23 per cent) to reach 11.8 mt. It also handled 18 per cent of total Major Port volumes in the same month.

NEW DELHI: India’s goods exports rose 9.1% to a three-month high of $38.1 billion in May, outpacing imports that grew 7.7% on a higher base to $61.9 billion. The trade deficit zoomed to a seven-month high of $23.8 billion.
The rise in exports was led by engineering goods, electronics, drugs, pharma products and plastics, official data showed recently
Terming May as an “excellent” month for exports, commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said that the situation was looking more optimistic for trade this year, with even sectors such as textiles recording healthy growth after months of sluggishness
Easing inflation in developed economies is expected to lift demand and exports, he said. “We hope this trend continues this year… Also hope
that there are no more geopolitical conflicts and disruptions in major global shipping routes,” Barthwal said. “This will be a positive trend for Indian exports this fiscal year.”
The trade deficit was $19.1 billion in April and $22.5 billion in May 2023. The previous high in the trade gap was in October 2023 at $31.46 billion.
“Trade deficit per se I do not consider it as bad as long as you have FDI (foreign direct investment) flowing in, foreign exchange coming in and if you are balancing it through other means,” Barthwal said, pointing to growing services exports. “Then we should not unnecessarily be worried about the trade deficit in merchandise.”
Exports rose 9% month-onmonth from April.
The top export destinations were the US and the UAE whereas China
and Russia were the biggest import sources.
As per data released by the commerce and industry ministry, 20 of the key 30 export sectors reported growth while 16 imports expanded.
Gold imports shrank 9.7% on-year in May to $3.33 billion, hit by record high prices. “In sequential terms, 71% of the enlargement in the m

portrays yet another positive growth momentum : FIEO
N E W D E L H I :
Reacting to the May, 2 0 2 4 m e r c h a n d i s e export numbers, FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar said that continuing with positive growth momentum for second month in a row during FY 2024-25 on the back of buoyant order bookings goes to show the resilience of the exports sector and Indian exporting community Goods exports of US$ 38 13 billion with an impressive growth of 9% compared to May 2023 is not only a good sign but also goes to show efforts and hard work, which the exporters are putting together The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war coupled with various major geo-political tensions including the Red Sea crisis and Israel-Hamas conflict has also made the international trade scenario m u c h t o u g h e r f o r t h e I n d i a n exporters, added Mr Kumar We further expect exports to show b e t t e r g r o w t h n u m b e r s w i t h improved demand coming in from the European Union, UK, West Asia and the US, which has given boost to the order bookings by over 10 % and has come as sign of recovery for labour-intensive sectors of exports FIEO Chief said that key sectors which have shown positive growth during the month of May 2024, include e l e c t r o n i c g o o d s , d r u g s &
pharmaceuticals, organic & inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics & linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs./madeups, handloom products etc , manm a d e y a r n / f a b s . / m a d e - u p s , handloom products etc , cereal preparations & miscellaneous processed items, meat, dairy & poultry products, mica, coal & other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds and fruits & vegetables.
Our exports in all our top ten markets (US, UAE, Netherland, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France) were positive and many of them recorded a healthy double-digit growth.
Month-on-month imports during May 2024 was US$ 61.91 billion with growth of 7.7 percent, increasing the trade deficit for the month to US$ 23.78 billion, which in itself is not a good sign for the economy, said Mr Ashwani Kumar. However, a negative trade balance is not always bad, if a country is importing raw materials or intermediary products to boost manufacturing and exports, added FIEO President.
Overall exports of (goods and services) increased to US$ 73.12 billion during April-May FY 2024-25
with a growth of 5 1 percent compared to A p r i l - M a y F Y 2 0 2 3 - 2 4 while overall imports saw a n 8 8 9 % i n c r e a s e t o U S D 1 1 6 billion. He also a d d e d t h a t though there is increase in imports during April-May 2024 mainly due to petroleum products, gold, silver, e l e c t r o n i c g o o d s , p u l s e s a n d vegetable oil but the increase in petroleum products, gold and silver import will lead to increase in exports of petroleum products and gems & jewellery with a time lag.
FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar further reiterated that the need of the hour is to take steps on the liquidity front with deeper interest subvention support and continuation of interest equalisation scheme Besides, addressing the Middle East geopolitical situation, Red Sea crisis challenges by ensuring availability of marine insurance and rationale increase in freight charges The sector also needs easy & low cost of credit, marketing support and conclusion of some of the key FTAs with UK, Peru and Oman soon.

NEW DELHI: In a significant stride for India's fresh fruit export sector, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, f a c i l i t a t e d t h e s u c c e s s f u l e x p o r t o f t h e f i r s t consignment of MD 2 variety pineapples to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
The consignment, comprising 8.7 metric tons (650 boxes) of the prized MD 2 pineapples, was ceremoniously flagged off by Chairman, APEDA, Shri Abhishek Dev, in the presence of senior officials from APEDA and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR CCARI).
"This marks a pivotal moment in India's agricultural export history, showcasing our ability to produce and supply premium quality pineapples to global markets," said Shri Abhishek Dev "The MD 2 variety is renowned for its exceptional sweetness and quality, and we are thrilled to introduce it to the UAE market”, he said.
The MD 2 pineapple, also known as "Golden Ripe" or "Super Sweet," has become the gold standard in the pineapple industry, with significant cultivation in countries like Costa Rica, the Philippines, and Thailand.
ICAR CCARI provided essential technical support for post-harvest management and development of sea protocol for the MD 2 pineapple produced in the Sindhudurg district of the Konkan region in Maharashtra A private firm successfully grew this variety on 200 acres in partnership with local farmers, ensuring optimal quality and yield.
The harvested pineapples were meticulously graded, sorted, packed, and stored in Panvel, Navi Mumbai. From there, the consignment was transported to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) for its onward journey to the UAE.
APEDA continues its dedicated efforts to promote the export of fresh fruits and vegetables from India. This first trial shipment of MD 2 pineapples signifies a substantial addition to APEDA’s export basket, enhancing India's presence in the global market.
NEW DELHI: Fuelled by domestic demand growth, India is expected to remain the region’s fastest-growing economy in the Asia-Pacific region in the second half of the year 2024, said credit rating agency Moody’s Ratings on Thursday
“India will remain the region’s fastest-growing economy, sustaining last year’s domestically driven momentum We anticipate policy continuity after the general election, and a continued focus on infrastructure development and encouragement of private sector investment,” the credit rating agency said in its latest report.
The report also noted that India, Indonesia, and the Philippines were the key growth outperformers in the first half of the year 2024. “[They] led the way and should continue to outperform pre-COVID growth numbers on the back of rising exports, local demand, and government spending on infrastructure,” the report reads.
On the banking front, the report noted that the Indian
banking system is on a positive outlook because of good economic growth and healthy corporate credit quality. Regarding the possibility of rate cuts in the region, it notes that the pace of monetary policy normalisation will be uneven across Asia-Pacific (APAC) and the region’s central banks are unlikely to move before the US Federal Reserve, meaning cuts will not come until the second half of 2024 or early 2025.
“Volatile commodity prices elevate risks to this time scale, given most countries in the region are net food and oil importers. The Bank of Japan will remain an outlier, but financial conditions will stay accommodative this year,” the report says.
Earlier, the World Bank retained its growth forecast for India at 6.6 per cent for FY25, while maintaining that India is poised to remain the fastest-growing of the world’s largest economies, although its pace of expansion is expected to moderate.
AGRA: The Agra Development Authority (ADA) is set to kickstart a mega infrastructural project with the construction of a state-of-the-art logistics hub in Mudhera village, situated southeast of the Gwalior Road in the city of the Taj.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 570 crore, aims to significantly enhance the region’s logistics and transportation capabilities.
“The board has passed the proposal for the logistics hub in Mudhera. Seed Capital is needed for the purchase of land, and the proposal will be sent to the government for approval”, Shraddha Shandilya, Secretary of ADA, said. “Once the necessary approvals are obtained, the land acquisition process will begin, paving the way for this transformative project.”
The ADA approved the proposal for the project during its 143rd board meeting. The detailed financial outline includes
an expenditure of Rs 4,000 per square meter on land acquisition and Rs 2,500 per square meter on development. The sale price of the land is projected to be around Rs 13,000 per square meter, which is competitive given the current market value of Rs 25,000 to 30,000 per square meter in the region. The logistics hub is slated to span over 88 hectares in Mudhera and will be strategically positioned just one kilometer from the proposed new townships in Kakua and Bhandai.
To facilitate the construction of the logistics hub, the ADA will be purchasing land from local farmers based on mutual consent, offering a compensation package four times the current circle rate of Rs 70 lakh per hectare. This means, the ADA will spend Rs 350 crore solely on acquiring the required area of land.
One of the logistics hub’s key advantages is going to be its strategic location and excellent connectivity
MUMBAI: The Indian ship recycling industry will see revenue growth of 15 per cent this fiscal after two years of decline, Crisil ratings said. The rating agency said the growth will be supported by the increased availability of ageing vessels for recycling due to addition of new vessel capacity globally and higher competitiveness of Indian ship recyclers compared to key rival nations — Bangladesh and Pakistan.
“The Indian ship recycling industry will see revenue growth of 15 per cent this fiscal after two years of decline — 22 per cent in fiscal 2024 and 8.5 per cent in fiscal 2023,” it said.
According to the rating agency, the increased availability
of ageing vessels will bring down input cost for ship recyclers.
“This, along with higher capacity utilization leading to better efficiency, will improve operating profitability by 75 basis points (bps) to 6.5 per cent this fiscal,” it said.
Crisil ratings said higher cash generation and absence of capital expenditure (capex), along with healthy balance sheets, will keep credit profiles stable for Indian ship recyclers.
Indian ship recyclers are expected to grab a lion’s share of the increased volume of condemned vessels, given their higher competitiveness leading to likely volume growth of around 20-23 per cent, it said.

NEW DELHI: Implementation of key strategic reforms such as simplification of customs duty structure, GST, and not incentivising low value-added electric vehicles would help India ensure its sustainable development and inclusive growth, GTRI said recently
Economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) also said that India is standing on the cusp of a transformative era and there is an urgent need for comprehensive economic reforms.
“From simplifying the convoluted customs duty structure to pioneering regulatory sandboxes for cryptocurrencies, and from boosting the MSME sector through GST (Goods and Services Tax) reforms to fortifying our energy security, this agenda lays the foundation for a robust, resilient, and globally competitive India,” it said.
It said that the current basic customs duty structure, which affects $680 billion worth of imports, has not been reviewed in 20 years, leading to over 27 different duty rates and over 100 specific or mixed duty slabs.
Currently, 85 per cent of customs duty revenue comes from less than 10 per cent of tariff lines (or product categories), while 60 per cent of tariff lines contribute less than 3 per cent of revenue.
“With some adjustments, the average import tariff could be reduced from 18 1 per cent to below 10 per cent without impacting important products. “Simplification is necessar y to avoid global criticism, as highlighted by former US President Donald Trump calling India the tariff king,” it said.
The think tank suggested increasing the GST exemption limit for a firm’s annual turnover from 40 lakh to 1.5 crore as this will be transformative for India’s MSME sector, promoting job creation and growth.
Firms with less than Rs 1.5 crore turnover make up over 80 per cent of registrations but contribute less than 7 per cent of the tax collected, it said adding a yearly turnover of 1.5 crore equals 12-13 lakh monthly turnover, translating to just Rs 1.2 lakh at a 10 per cent profit margin.
“The new limit would reduce the GST system’s load from 1.4 crore taxpayers to less than 23 lakh, allowing for the introduction of invoice-matching for 100 per cent
compliance, eliminating fake invoices and tax theft Increased tax collection will offset the 7 per cent tax loss,” GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.
It also asked the government not to incentivise low value-added Electric vehicles (Evs).
Due to restrictions from the US and EU on Chinese EVs, China is shifting its focus to Southeast Asian markets, including India.
“In few years, every third EV on Indian roads, as well as numerous passenger and commercial vehicles, could be made by Chinese firms, either independently or through joint ventures with Indian companies,” it said.
Since current EVs rely heavily on Chinese batteries and parts, accounting for 60-90 per cent of their cost, India should avoid incentivizing low value-added Evs,” the GTRI said, adding It is crucial to balance increased EV adoption with the need to protect and develop the domestic auto industry
Further, it suggested focusing on developing capacity to produce inputs and intermediates for both chemical and fermentation-based Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).
India imports 70 per cent of its APIs and over 80 per cent of its biosimilars from China, posing a significant risk to the industry and national security.
It added that simplification of e-commerce export rules will help in boosting India’s exports.
India has more than 20 lakh firms that produce good quality products and services but less than a lakh of these export.
“Simplifying RBI, banking, Customs, GST and DGFT rules related to e-com export will help them to start exporting Handicrafts, jewellery, ethnic wear, decorative paintings, Ayurveda and many more products,” Srivastava said.
He added that India relies on China for 30 per cent of its industrial product imports, with imports soaring tenfold in the past two decades.
China is also the top import supplier in each of the major industrial product categories.
“As Chinese firms expand their operations in Indian markets, imports are expected to rise further. This escalating dependence calls for a strategic approach to cut reliance on China,” he said.
NEW DELHI : The 72nd meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) reviewed three major infrastructure projects under the Prime Minister’s Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), a national master plan for multi-modal connectivity which brings together 16 ministries, including railways and roads, for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects.
The meeting, chaired by Additional Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Rajeev Singh Thakur, was held in New Delhi on June 12, 2024.
These infrastructure projects are owned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the Ministry of Railways (MoR) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The National Highway Project in Jammu and Kashmir involves construction and modernization of a 51 km section of NH-701 from Rafiabad to Chamkot. With both greenfield (14.34 km) and brownfield (36.66 km)
developments, the project i s e x p e c t e d t o c o s t Rs 1,405 crore.
The improved route will improve connectivity for villages like Kupwara, Chowkibal and Tangdhar, improve logistical support for the armed forces and boost socio-economic conditions by providing better access to healthcare, education and business opportunities, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry added to it. a release.
The second in the order, the Gudur-Renigunta Third Railway Line in Andhra Pradesh, is an 83.17 km line aimed at increasing the capacity of the existing double line.
With an estimated cost of Rs 884 crores, this project will improve passenger and freight traffic efficiency, requiring 36.58 hectares of land.
