North America – A promising market for Indian Fasteners industry to push its exports: Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO

NEWDELHI:A20-memberFIEObusiness delegation from Fastener industry is taking part in the Fastener Fair, Nashville, USA being heldfrom16thto17thMay,2023.

The Consul General of India to the South-East USA, Dr Swathi V Kulkarni inaugurated Indian Pavilion in the presence of Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO; Dr Ajay Sahai, DG & CEO, FIEO; Ms Paige Brown, Mayor, City of Gallatin; Mr James Fenton, Executive Director, Gallatin Economic Development and the former Union Minister of State for Social Justice, Mr D Napoleon also attended the inauguration ceremony and interacted with the participants.

The Consul General appreciated Indian participants for their innovative products and expressed her hope that Fastener Fair, USA will lead to increased business opportunities for both Indian and American companies. Dr Swathi advised the participants to strictly adhere to quality for growth in US market. She extended the support to the participants in identifying large importers of fasteners in US and also doing credibility checks on them inassociationwithconcernedagenciesinUS.

Dr A Sakthivel said that Indian companies have undertaken intensive technological developments and presenting advanced lightweight products and hybrid fasteners that find usage in entire industrial sectors especially automotive, aircraft and other industrial applications. As India can offer products of high quality with very competitive pricing, US companies can become more competitive by procuring these products from India, FIEOPresidentsaid.

Dr Ajay Sahai expressed his optimism that Indian Fastener Industry sector can make deeper inroads in to

US market to double its market share in the next 5 years. The global industrial fasteners market size is around USD 90 billion and expected to grow further due to rising demand for industrial fasteners in the automotive and aerospace sectors apart from construction sector. The US is the 5th largest importing countries of fasteners in the world after China, Germany, Japan and South Korea with import of USD 16.50 billion during the year 2022.

India’s market size of fastener is USD 4.6 billion and exports only USD 780-800 million, due to strong domestic demands lead by auto and construction sector. However, Indian companies started engaging in larger volumes capacity adhering to quality standards along with strong R&D backup to cope with dynamic market conditions of thissector.Hence,FIEOestimatesthatexportoffasteners canreachUSD1.5billionby2025.

Expecting a very successful event at Nashville, FIEO is of the view that the event will create new business opportunities and ideas for expanding businesses in USmarket.

Cont’d. from Pg. 3

With a hefty newbuilding orderbook of 127 vessels with a combined capacity of 1.66 mn TEU the 6 mn TEU mark for MSC’s fleet is not much more than a year away. Alphaliner estimated it could reach a fleet size of 6 mn TEU by mid-2024, although the exact timing depends on vesselacquisitionsandsales.

The 2M Alliance with Maersk officially expires in early 2025 and MSC is seen as having the scale to go it

alone outside of major alliances, as it has previously indicateditplanstodo.

“Unlike most other shipping lines within the top-ten, MSC’s sheer scale will allow the carrier to offer attractive port pairs on all key trade lanes without joining another alliance set-up. Alphaliner nevertheless expects MSC to maintain selected smaller-scale partnerships on a number of trades,” theweeklyreportsaid.

Growing trend of Nearshoring and Trade Regionalisation: DP World

DUBAI: Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director, DP World UAE and Jafza (Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority), recently said UAE trade with the rest of the world totalled over $1 trillion last year, while UAE-India trade increased 23% to $84 billion. Nearshoring was a growing factorintheregionalisationoftrade.

Major factors shaping critical business decisions around the world were identified in DP World’s 2023 Trade in Transition report launched in partnership with the Economist at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlierthisyear.Thefindingthisyearatagloballevelwas unsurprising, he said: geopolitical pressure remained the overriding factor, driving the reconfiguration of supplychains.

“As a response, companies are looking to bring down their supply chain costs while at the same time reducing the risk of disruptions. Many are taking action to reduce the length of their supply chains through nearshoring or reshoring. They are thinking long term and are prepared to sacrifice immediate profitability for increased resilienceandreliability,”hesaid.

“Weareseeingapushforindustrialisationtodiversify economies away from oil. It is anticipated that regionalisation and reshoring will help to enable the developmentoftheseemergingindustries.”

The top drivers of export growth in 2023 are expected to be growing demand in key markets, expansion of operations into new markets, and improved efficiency through digitalisation. DP World’s Middle East region showed a similar picture, he said: rising transport, energy and food costs, as well as anticipated economic recessioninkeymarkets.

In April, the UAE ranked in the top 12 of the World Bank Logistics performance index, which rates the quality of logistics services, trade- and transport-related infrastructureandbordercontrols.

“The positive news has continued with Kearney’s 2023ForeignDirectInvestmentConfidenceIndex,which ranks the UAE as the No.1 emerging market across the Middle East and Africa. The UAE is also positioned as thirdgloballyafterChinaandIndia,”hesaid.

“Our goods trade with the rest of the world passed a trillion US dollars in 2022 with exports and imports increasing due to the higher crude oil price, according to theWorldTradeOrganization.”

Government commitment to economic growth continues. “Take for example Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which is extremely ambitious. It aims to double size

of Dubai’s economy by 2033, double our foreign trade and add400citiestoitsforeigntrademapinthenextdecade,” hesaid.

“Jebel Ali remains by far the largest port in the region and we have significantly expanded our capabilities beyond simply being a port operator. We continue to progress toward our vision to provide logistics solutions fromthefactoryfloortothecustomer'sdoor.”

At Jafza, he said DP World was committed to the kind of investment that made economic sense for the region. Lastyear,DubaiTraders’Marketwasestablishedtohelp traders from the region, China and the world to access goodsthatcanbestored, sold, imported, andexportedall inoneplace.

“This is the kind of forward-looking innovation that is necessary to help us realise our future ambitions, as well as an investment in our home-market infrastructure. We are also investing in significantly expanding our logistics expertise beyond Dubai and this region,” hesaid.

To evidence this, he said the recent acquisition of companies like Imperial Logistics and Syncreon Holdings, which were already logistics leaders in highgrowth markets around the world, would help drive businessgrowth.

TheUAEGovernmentrecentlysawaUAE-IndiaFree Trade Agreement, and five further deals with Indonesia, Israel, Turkey, Cambodia, and Georgia. “Many more are in the pipeline. These agreements have huge value for businesses and trade. They open new windows of opportunity and will give us access to new markets. The first of our own bridge initiatives, the India-UAE Bridge, was launched over three years ago, and we will integrate our assets and capabilities to offer trade value andefficiency.”

In2022,tradebetweenIndiaandtheUAEgrewby23% year-over-year to reach $84 billion and the data for 2023 wouldlikelyseethistrendcontinue,hesaid.

In a rapid, challenging and changing environment, DP World needed to adapt and innovate in its business in order for it to flourish in a competitive, noisy and complicated world. “We know that cargo-owning customers are demanding greater simplicity and control and are focused on achieving improved supply chains, costefficiencyandresilience,”hesaid.

“To meet these customer needs, DP World and Jafza are fully committed to creating more integrated end-toend logistics services, which deliver significant supply chain improvement, wider market access and ultimately prosperityforourindustry.”

Adani Ports handles highest-ever Rail Cargo of over 120 MMT in FY22-23

APSEZ generates a record revenue of Rs 14,000 crore for Indian Railways in FY23

Mundra Port handled over 15,000 containertrainsinFY23,cementingits position as India's Export Import gateway. In FY23, APSEZ generated aroundRs14,000croreinrevenuefrom railcargoforIndianRailways.

In FY23, double-stack container trains handled by Mundra Port grew by4.3%YoY.

Doublestackloadingofcontainers ontrainsensurestransportationinan energy efficient and reliable manner, reducing overall per unit cost and improvingcustomersatisfaction.

It demonstrates Mundra Port's commitment to environmentally friendly operations. The use of rail transport reduces the carbon

footprint of freight transport, and the efficient handling of container trains reduces the need for additional truck transport, further reducing carbon emissions.

India’s largest commercial port operator, Adani Ports has been a leader in the development of India's port and logistics infrastructure. This feat is an example of responsible business practices and sustainable development.

Exporters expect to see 11-13% growth in current fiscal

Cont’d. from Pg. 3

“We expect $900 billion exports for the full year, of which $500-510 billion would be goods and around $400 billion services,” said Ajay Sahai, director general, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), adding that the first and second quarters of the calendar year wouldbeslowforexports.

Exporters said many clients had deferred their shipments from the last fiscal to this financial year and thoseorderswillstartflowingsoon.

Sahai said the volume of orders is lower but the frequency is higher. “By September, we will push orders forChristmasandnewyear,”hesaid.

EEPC India Chairman Arun Kumar Garodia said the RussiaUkraine crisis, slowdown in advanced economies, high interest rates and geopolitical tensions will continue to adversely impact trade. “The order book will improve from July. We expect to end the full year with

growthhigherthanlastyear,”hesaid. Strategyunderworks

India’s goods exports shrank 12.7% on-year to $34.66 billion in the first month of FY24, dragged by sluggish demand and recession in major markets while the trade deficit fell to a 20-month low at $15.2 billion inApril.

“Looking at the uncertainty, the Government has not fixed any export target for the current fiscal and would only forecast, but exporters and industry were asked to give their own targets,” an official said, adding that an overall strategy both for goods and servicesexportswasneeded.

The commerce and industry ministryhasheldaroundoftalkswith services exporters to formulate short-term, mid-term and long-term strategies.

The share of India’s services exports in overall global services exports has risen from 4% to 4.4%, saidWorldTradeOrganization.

SectoralOutlook

Cotton textile and apparel exporters expect 8-10% on-year growth in FY24 after a slow first quarter.

“April was sluggish in terms of demand. There is not much demand internationally. We expect some pick up and exports to increase 8-10% over the last fiscal,” said a representative ofthecottontextileindustry.

Around 70% of India’s cotton textiles go to the US and the EU but demand is down almost 10% on the retail side, especially home textiles while readymade garments’ demand isdown10-12%overlastyear.

“Commodity prices have fallen, which impacted exports. However, gas prices in the EU and inflation are stabilising. This will help push demand for discretionary spends,” said a representative from the synthetictextileindustry.

Exports of processed foods are likelytorise6-7%thisyear.

United Nations

NEW DELHI: India’s economy is expected to grow by 6.7 per cent in the calendar year 2024, supported by resilient domestic demand, according to a UN report which said higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investmentandexportsthisyearforthe country.

The World Economic Situation and Prospects as of mid-2023 released on Tuesday said India’s economy, the largest in the South Asian region, is expected to expand by 5.8 per cent in 2023 and 6.7 per cent in 2024 (calendar year basis), supported by resilient domestic demand. However, higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investmentandexportsin2023,itsaid.

The flagship report issued in January had said that India’s GDP is

projected to moderate to 5.8 per cent in 2023 as higher interest rates and global economic slowdown weigh on investment and exports. India’s economic growth is expected to remain “strong” even as prospects for other South Asian nations “are more challenging.” India is projected to grow at 6.7 per cent in 2024, the fastestgrowing major economy in the world, theflagshipreporthadsaid.

Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Hamid Rashid had said at a press conference that India is a “bright spot” in the world economy.

The mid-year assessment said that prospects for a robust global economic recovery remain dim amid stubborn inflation, rising interest

rates and heightened uncertainties. Instead, the world economy faces the risk of a prolonged period of low growth as the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the everworsening impact of climate change and macroeconomic structural challengesremainunaddressed.

According to the report, the world economy is now projected to grow by 2.3 per cent in 2023 (+0.4 percentage points from the January forecast) and 2.5 per cent in 2024 (-0.2 percentage points), a slight uptick in the global growth forecast for 2023.In the US, resilient household spending has prompted an upward revision of the growth forecast to 1.1 per cent in 2023. The European Union’s economy driven by lower gas prices and robust consumer spending is now projected to growby0.9percent,thereportsaid.
