WCO : Container Control Programme highlights prevention of Global Supply Chain

BRUSSELS AND VIENNA : The Container Control Programme (CCP) releaseditsAnnualReportfor2022.The CCP continued to deliver impressive results by making a wide variety of seizures, including cocaine, firearms, ammunition and parts of explosives, cigarettes, and products related to crimes that affect the environment. Translating these outcomes into impact, the CCP continues to improve the security, health, and economies of countriesandpeoplearoundtheworld.

Director of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Mr. Pranab KumarDas, highlightsthat“theresults and impact are thanks to a multitude of partnerships with countries and their law enforcement agencies through interagency cooperation, the private

Maersk launches methanol-powered feeder to reduce carbon emissions

COPENHAGEN: Container shipping heavyweight Maersk has achievedamajormilestoneinitsefforts to reduce carbon emissions with the successful launching of its first methanol-powered feeder vessel at the HyundaiMipoDockyard.

“The launching was successfully

completed at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and the construction is continuing,” Henrik Ekmann, Head of Newbuilding &RetrofitatMaersk.

South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard launched the feeder on April 4. The ship is the company’s first carbon-neutral vessel and it will join its

fleetinthesummerofthisyear.

“Launching these mega structures takes precision and care, extensive productanddesigndevelopmentfroma large number of key suppliers and drivenforwardbyourProcurementand Fleet Technology teams,” Ekmann added.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw further stated that Railways is working on a dedicated test track which will help it become a major exporter to various countries and it will help in the growth of the Indian economy.

“ForIndiatoemergeasanexporter in the Railways sector too, a dedicated test track is essential. This dedicated track has multiple benefits where trains and signalling systems on different parameters are tested.

Speed, curvature, and stability are some of the parameters on which the test track will be useful. Work is ongoing rapidly on it. Today some countries are having discussions on importing our Vande Bharat trains so in near future this technology will also playavitalroleinourexports,”hesaid.

EarlierUnionCommerceMinister Shri Piyush Goyal announced that India’s overall exports have touched USD 770 billion in 2022-23, registering 14 per cent growth compared to the previous year’s figures. Piyush Goyal

was addressing the India-Italy Businesssummitlastweek.

“It is an all-time high record, growing from USD 500 billion in 2020-21 to USD 676 billion in 2021-22. And now the country registers a further growth of nearly USD 100 billion to cross USD 770 billion in such challenging times when the world is seeing softening of international trade, slowing of international trade, and when there are recessionary conditions in the developed world…” hesaid.

Forthcoming FTAs will boost Exports from India : Anupriya Patel

MUMBAI: The forthcoming Free Trade Agreements (FTA) would substantiallyboostexportsfromIndia including exports from the chemicals sector,saidUnionMinisterofStatefor Commerce & Industry Smt Anupriya Patelrecently.

“The chemicals industry is also benefiting from the two FTAs that we have concluded. Now we are proceedingwithournegotiationswith U.K., EU & Canada,” she said on the sidelines of the 47th CHEMEXCIL ExportAwardsinMumbai.

“By the year-end, we will be able to finalise with a few more countries and they are moving in the right direction because our intention is to create more balanced FTAs which could be favourable to both the countries and provide us as much global access as possible to our exporters,”sheadded.

“So we are quite hopeful that this year would be good for us in terms of some more FTAs being signed,” she furthersaid.

The Minister said that out of the

total exports of $770 billion achieved for FY23 the contribution of the chemicals industry is $30 billion.

“The growth in chemicals export hasbeenquitesteady.Itisthefastestgrowing sector. In 2020-2021 it [exports] was $23 billion and for next year it was $27 billion. Although the target for 2022-23 was $32 billion, they had achieved $30 billion which is pretty good. Chemicals will make huge contribution to the overall exports,”shesaid.

US emerges as India's biggest trading partner in FY23 at $128.55 bn; China at second position

NEW DELHI: The US has emerged as India's biggest trading partner in 2022-23 on account of increasing economic ties between the two countries. According to the provisional data of the Commerce Ministry, the bilateral trade between IndiaandtheUShasincreasedby7.65 per cent to USD 128.55 in 2022-23 as against USD 119.5 billion in 2021-22. It wasUSD80.51billionin2020-21.

Exports to the US rose by 2.81 per cent to USD 78.31 billion in 2022-23 as against USD 76.18 billion in 2021-22, while imports grew by about 16 per cent to USD 50.24 billion, the data showed.

On the other hand, during 2022-23, India's two-way commerce with Chinadeclinedbyabout1.5percentto

USD 113.83 billion as against USD 115.42billionin2021-22.

Exports to China dipped by about 28percenttoUSD15.32billionin202223, while imports rose by 4.16 per cent to USD 98.51 billion in the last fiscal. Trade gap widened to USD 83.2 billion in the last fiscal as against USD 72.91 billionin2021-22.

Experts believe that the trend of increasing bilateral trade with the US will continue in the coming years also as New Delhi and Washington are engaged in further strengthening the economicties.

FIEO Vice President Khalid Khan said India is emerging as a trusted trading partner and global firms are reducing their dependence only on China for their supplies and are

diversifying business into other countrieslikeIndia.

"The bilateral trade between India and the US will continue to grow as our exporters are getting good orders fromthatCountry,"Khansaid.

The data showed that China was India's top trading partner since 201314 till 2017-18 and also in 2020-21. Before China, the UAE was the country'slargesttradingpartner.

In2022-23,theUAEwithUSD76.16 billion, was the third largest trading partner of India. It was followed by Saudi Arabia (USD 52.72 billion), and Singapore(USD35.55billion).

Bhavanapadu Port to be renamed as Mulapeta Port

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government has renamed the Bhavanapadu Port as Mulapeta Port, respecting the sentiments of local villagers in Srikakulam district. Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will lay the

foundation stone for the greenfield port on April 19.

Wan Hai Lines holds naming ceremony for 13,100 TEU Newbuilding “WAN HAI A10”

TAIPEI: Wan Hai Lines Ltd. held ship naming ceremony for WAN HAI A10 accompanied by a charity donation today (14TH April) at Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje shipyard. Ms. Sung Hee Jeong, wife of Mr. Ban Yong Kyu, the director of K-ONE CORPORATION CO,. LTD Trade Team, named the vessel during the ceremony. Wan Hai Lines Ltd. had signed a total of thirteen 13,100 TEUs containerships with Samsung Heavy Industries during 2021 to 2022. A total of 3 vessels have been delivered.

WAN HAI A10 is the fourth vessel in the series of 13,100 teu containerships built by Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje shipyard. The vessel is designed with a length overall of 335 meters, a breadth of 51 meters, a draft of 16 meters and a maximum cruising speed of 22 knots.

The containership design takes energy efficiency and environmentally-friendly aspects into account, equipped with full balanced twisted bulb rudders, pre-swirl fin and also meets the highest level of requirement for EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) for phase III in advance. Besides, all the ships delivered are certified with “Smart Ship” notations. WAN HAI A10 will be delivered in late April, 2023 and deployed in Asia to East Coast of North America service. In addition to naming the newbuilding, Wan Hai Lines also made a donation of necessitiestoalocalcharitySungroOrphanage.Wehope this small token could benefit the local community. Consumers seek tariff rationalisation on dedicated freight corridor

MUMBAI: Stakeholders using the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) are calling for rationalising tariff to attract more consumers on to the railway network. Container train operators and port players say while the DFC has lowered the time taken for moving goods and ensures predictability, the costisanimpedimenttoadoption.

APM Terminals, a unit of Danish shipping giant Maersk, is seeking the rationalisation. Their Pipavav terminal on the Gujarat coast has immediate access to key markets in northwest India and the largest sea food export belt in India through road and rail, includingdirectelectrifiedaccesstothe WesternDedicatedFreightCorridor.

“Today, our trains from Khatuwas (close to Haryana-Rajasthan border), arriveatourportinlessthan24hours.It used to take 3-4 days earlier,” Girish Aggarwal, Managing Director

at APM Terminals Pipavav was quoted as saying this recently. He added that the Western DFC has significantly loweredthetimetakenforcommoditiesto travel between North India and the westerncoast.

But despite the added convenience, consumers still shy from exclusively usingtheraillink.

“From our perspective, the money now needs to be passed on to the customer.Whenyoustartdoingthat,alot of road traffic gets diverted to rail,” Agarwal said while calling for lowering the tariffs charged on the DFC. According to him, people from Delhi, SonipatandPanipatarecomingthrough truckswhenitshouldberail.

Commenting on the need to rationalise rail tariffs, Manish Puri, president, Association of Container Train Operators (ACTO) said, “Rail is more expensive than road in the light

cargo category. This is because charging is done directionally in road. So light cargo in export direction on roadischeaperthantherailroute.”

Respondingtoaqueryonthesecalls for rationalising tariff on DFC, Nanduri Srinivas, director, operations and business development at Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) said, “Right now, DFC is following the same tariff of Indian Railwaysforconventionaltraffic”. Puri said that double stacking reduces the unit cost across containers by about 25%. “Double stacking makes rail much more competitivethanroad.Today,thereisa restriction on how much double stacking is possible because of certain weight categories not being permitted,” he said, noting that this needstobesmoothenedout.

GSBN completes PoC using confidential computing to transform Global Trade finance

HONG KONG: Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) completes a ground-breaking proof-of-concept (PoC) with the British multinational universal bank and financial services holding company HSBC to harness confidential computing technology through Decentriq Data Clean Rooms totransformglobaltradefinance.

GSBN is an independent, not-forprofit technology consortium building a blockchain-enabledoperatingsystem.

The financing gap is estimated to reach US$2.5 trillion by 2025, according to the World Economic Forum. One of the reasons why funding applications are rejected is due to the lack of

information from the requesting entities.

HSBC, as one member of GSBN’s Trade Finance Advisory Group, has responded to the unmet demand by collaborating on a number of solutions and proof-of-concepts that harness trusted digital data from the supply chain. Moreover, confidential computing is the latest in privacyenhancing technology designed to protect data at the hardware level. While GSBN’s platform is built upon blockchain technology with strict accesspolicies,therearescenariosthat require more complex data collaborationprocesses.

Additionally, in the latest proof-ofconcept, synthetic shipment details provided by carriers via GSBN are aggregated and processed in the clean room, where HSBC can access the statisticstogainabetterunderstandingof customers’shippingactivities,i.e.,number of shipments, distribution of cargo nature,andaveragecargoquantity,etc.

12th Session of India-Spain Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation

NEW DELHI: Commerce Secretary,

Shri Sunil Barthwal, and Ms. Xiana Mendez, Secretary of State for Trade, GovernmentofSpainco-chairedthe12th SessionofIndia-SpainJointCommission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) on 13th April, 2023 in New Delhi. Both sides celebrated this Golden Jubilee edition of India-Spain Joint Commission mechanism which was established in 1972. During the past 50 years, a remarkable enhancement of bilateral trade and investment has taken place. With an investment of USD 3.7 Bn, 250 Spanish Companies are active in India and 40 Indian Companies are present in Spain working in different sectors such as IT, Pharma, Renewable Energy, Automobiles,Infrastructureetc.

Ms. Xiana emphasised the importance of India-Spain relationship and the Spanish partnership in India’s

development stories. Spanish side has reaffirmed the further cooperation in the various sectors including in the field of Civil Aviation such as Automation, Surveillance and NavAids,HighSpeedRailways, Railways networking, Signalling,Trafficmanagement etc.

Both sides also agreed for further cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy, Shipping, Ports, Tourism, Infrastructure, Food Processing, Pharmaceuticals, Technology, Innovation, and Defence sector.

The status of various MOUs were also reviewed including those of importantinterestforbilateralrelations such as MOUs on Migration and Mobility, Agreement on Social Security,

CyberSecurityetc.

Both sides also discussed various Market Access Issues faced by their exporters and agreed to resolve the samethroughbilateraldiscussions.

India and Spain are looking forward to a considerable progress in the ongoing India-EU FTA Negotiations during the upcoming Spanish Presidency of EU from July to December,2023.

ESR Group plans Rs 400-crore logistics park in Gujarat

MUMBAI: Asia Pacific-focused real estate services and investment major ESR Group plans to set up a 1-millionsq-ft warehousing logistics park in Gujarat’s Sanand with an investment of over Rs. 400 crore. The project seeks to tap into demand seen emerging from ancillary units supplying to electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed company hasacquireda38-acrelandparcelforits second investment in the state, the first beinga37-acreprojectinJalisana.

While the first project’s infrastructure is ready, the new project is expected to be completed in the next threeyears.

“Gujarat attracts one of the highest foreign direct investments in India and is currently turning into an electric vehicles’ (EV) battery manufacturing andassemblycentre.Theavailabilityof grade A infrastructure in a strategic location like Sanand is essential for the region’s industrial growth and will add to its EV manufacturing capacity,” said Abhijit Malkani, CEO of ESR India. The project is looking to create a focused space for established and emerging EV manufacturing and ancillary units to expand their presence in Ahmedabad and benefit from this thriving ecosystem.

In addition, the proposed project

also has port connectivity to facilitate the import and export of components, and has access to Kandla port, India’s largest container port and is well connected with Mundra, Dahej, Jafrabad, Pipavav and Hazira ports. It also has access to Ahmedabad’s international airport, Vadodara international airport, and national and statehighwaynetworks.

Upcoming infrastructure development, such as the DelhiMumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), will further enhance Sanand’s connectivity and reduce logisticscosts.

CMA CGM announces a new call at Ennore, India on its NEMO Service

MARSEILLE: CMA CGM has announced that its NEMO Service connecting North Europe & the Mediterranean with Oceania will expand its port coveragewith a Direct Call in Ennore (Chennai, India) ontheWestboundlegasfromJune2023.

This new call will offer our customers a fast export connectionfromthemaincommercialareainSouthEast India to Europe together with a direct import connection fromAustraliaandSingapore.

Ennore is also a natural gateway from/to ICDBangalorecoveredwithanefficientrailconnectivity andwillprovideabestinclassservicetothefast-growing automotiveindustry.

Maersk opens new Global Service Centres in Mexico and Brazil to better serve customers in the Americas

MEXICO CITY: A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has announced the opening of a new Global Service Centres (GSC) for the Americas Region, based in Mexico City, Mexico, with a dedicated satellitecentreinSantos,Brazil.

These new locations will combine talent availability across functions and disciplines in areas such as customer experience, finance, process management, technology, and data/analytics to provide high-quality support and a unique experience to customers. The centres will create over 700 new positions in 2023, withaplantoscaleupto1,300positionsby2025.

The Maersk GSC plays a critical role in delivering customer outcomes and enables decision making and prioritization. In 2022, Maersk witnessed exponential growthinLatinAmericaaspartofitsstrategytobecome a global integrator in container logistics. The Americasbased GSC will bring regional expertise to support customers’ growing needs, with English, Spanish, and Portuguese language support, scalable talent availability,andprocessstandardization.
