NYK agrees to MoU with PowerX Aiming to realize Zero-Emission Ships and Promote Offshore Wind-Power Genera on TOKYO: On January 28, NYK and PowerX, Inc. (Power X) agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly study the possibility of collaboration on development of marine batteries for ships, in addition to trial navigation and promotion of a powertransfer vessel.

To realize a decarbonized society, the need for zero-emission ships and ship electrification is rapidly increasing worldwide. In Japan, a new law intended to facilitate the development of offshore wind projects off Japan became effective in April 2019, and demand within the offshore wind-power generation market is expected to expand.

In response, NYK will study the potential to collaborate with Power X,

which develops new businesses utilizing large-capacity batteries and powertransmission technologies. Power X also aims to build and promote a powertransfer ship, or “Power ARK,” to deliver electricity generated offshore to shore.

NYK will promote efforts for the development of marine batteries and ship electrification, in addition to power transfer vessels, by combining Power X’s innovative ideas and business acumen together with the NYK Group’s expertise and technologies in the global shipping industry.

In addition, NYK will accumulate expertise and know-how on manpower savings through ship electrification and make use of that knowledge in the future development of its manned autonomous

ships. NYK is also setting its sights on addressing the issue of a decrease in the number of seafarers, which is expected to affect future domestic coastal shipping around Japan.

On February 3, 2021, NYK released the “NYK Group ESG Story,” which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through business activities. To strongly promote ESG management, the NYK Group will take initiatives to contribute to the realization of zero-emission ships and promote offshore wind-power generation, thus encouraging new value creation as a sustainable solution provider.

India's Apple imports more than doubled in the first nine months of this fiscal NEW DELHI: Indians have developed a taste for fresh apples in the pandemic, which has resulted in a sharp increase in the import of the fleshy fruit in the first nine months of the current fiscal year.

Imports of apples during the AprilDecember period more than doubled from a year earlier and were also 14% higher from the whole of fiscal 2020 when there were no Covid-related restrictions on the movement of goods.

Most of the imported apples are coming from Iran and Turkey, as availability of Washington apples has taken a hit. The landed cost of Washington apples has gone up as India continues to levy a 70% import duty on the commodity and also because the ocean freight for the US has gone up significantly.

This has forced importers to look at Iran and Turkey for procuring the fruit.

During the April-December 2020 period, India had imported 139,486 tonnes of fresh apples. That had increased to 303,245 tonnes in April-December 2021, or the first nine months of the ongoing fiscal year.

“The demand for fresh apples has risen substantially as consumers are looking to eat healthy,” said Sumit Saran, the India representative of the Washington Apple Commission, which promotes the apples from the US in international markets.

The import of Washington apples has shrunk to half in volume compared with the previous year, which is blamed primarily on the additional 20% retaliatory

duty India imposed on US-origin apples in 2019. This additional duty, which increased the tax on Washington apples to 70%, was l e v i e d a f t e r t h e t h e n Tr u m p administration in the US imposed a 25% duty on steel and 10% on aluminium imported from India. These levies by the US are also still in place.

“While the retaliatory duty is one part of lower imports of Washington apple, the rising ocean freight is too a major reason for reducing imports,” said Tarun Arora, director of finance and operations at IG International, an importer of fresh fruits.

“The longer the distance, the higher the freight rate.”

The shorter distance to Turkey and Iran means the freight cost is lower.

THE Alliance announces service network adjustments for 2022 HAMBURG: The setup of THE Alliance’s network has been reconfigured to ensure a comprehensive port coverage. The enhanced service setup will be effective from spring 2022.

A key change will be delinking the FP2 pendulum loop into two separate services, namely FE5: South East Asia to Europe and PS7: South East Asia and South China to Transpacific West Coast, with the main focus on increasing frequencies by responding to the independent services more quickly and flexibly.

Another important change is the deployment of larger ships for the most frequented services. The introduction of a modern series of fuel efficient 11,000 TEU vessels will replace older tonnages, and reflect THE Alliance’s continued commitment to lower carbon footprints.

The members of THE Alliance have recognised that the disruptions and bottlenecks in key ports worldwide are causing delays to the supply chains. Hence, they will continuously put utmost efforts into flexible and robust recovery measures for a quicker turnaround of sailings.

IPPTA urges Shipping Minister for provision extension in new Model Concession Agreement Cont’d. from Pg. 1 ... Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal for extension of provisions for existing concessionaires in the New Model Concession Agreement. IPPTA strives to ensure that private ports and terminals play a major role in developing the country’s maritime sector to global standards.

There are 37 PPP Projects under execution in India with an investment of about Rs 29,000 crore.

Through a letter to the Minister, IPPTA has highlighted that the existing PPP Operators are facing a lot of difficulties as the Concession Agreements are quite inflexible and cannot be altered over the concession period of 30 years.

This has led to creation of many stressed projects, and some more are on the verge of distress, unless urgent remedial steps are not taken. The problem areas in the Concession Agreements have been brought to the notice of the Government from time to time.

IPPTA in the letter further stated that the Government has taken the initiative to formulate a new Model Concession Agreement (MCA) keeping in view the problems being faced by the existing Concessionaires. However, the new MCA will be applicable only to new PPP Projects. This does not address the problems of the existing concessionaires who are governed under different MCAs. Having different sets of Concession Agreements for PPP Operators who came into existence at different times is not conducive to attracting huge

private investments for realizing the Maritime India Vision2030. There should be some flexibility to adopt the new provisions to the existing concessionaires. This can be easily done by signing Supplementary Agreements, for which provisions exist in the existing Concession Agreements.

There are some adverse changes proposed in the new MCA which may defeat the very purpose of making MCA more attractive to PPP players/Lenders and negate the very objective of enhancing PPP participation in port projects.

Some of the provisions relating to definition of Debt Due, Total Project Cost, Adjusted Equity, Removal of charge on concessionaires’ assets, deducting Insurance Cover from the Debt Due while calculating the Terminal compensation etc. make the projects risky and un-bankable.

The government also needs to address the larger issue of presence of different operators in the same port competing for the same cargo under different regulatory regimes leading to intense intra-port competition. This may lead to underutilization of many of the existing terminals (especially bulk terminals) which are governed under a stricter regime and they therefore face an unfair level playing field.

IPPTA requests for a policy decision for giving an option to the existing concessionaires to migrate to the provisions of the new concession agreement. This move will help the existing PPP operators to adjust to the changes in business dynamics and market conditions for the remaining period of their concessions.

Sarbananda Sonowal flags off maiden voyage of shipment of steel from Haldia to Pandu through IBP Route NEW DELHI: Honorable Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, flagged off the maiden voyage of barges with a consignment of 1798 MT of finished steel products of Tata Steel Limited from Haldia to Pandu ( in Assam) through t h e I n d o Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBP Route) in presence of Shri S h a n t a n u Thakur, MoS for Ports, Shipping and Waterways on 17th Feb. This maiden voyage showcases multimodal movement of cargo along with harnessing of the power of river – sea combination. The consignment of steel products of Tata Steel Ltd. has arrived at Haldia Dock Complex through the Railway mode; loaded onto barges [DB ABDUL KALAM and DB KALPANA CHAWLA chartered by SMPK] at berth no. 11 operated by TMILL who have organized movement of the cargo and loading at their berth. Ocean Whale Services will operate the barges for the voyage. Customs have given special permission to move this cargo on this route on priority. The barges will be flagged off and will move from Haldia to IWAI Pandu terminal in Assam. The barges will move along NW-I – Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route – NW-II. In the return leg, the barges will load coal provided by Fuel Sources India Pvt. Ltd. where LSC Solutions is providing ground logistic support along with last mile delivery, and is destined for unloading at SMPK, Kolkata.

Government envisages to leverage the inland waterways and establish synergy with the ports for robust Multi-Modal logistics chain. Further, to improve the connectivity through water ways, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) has taken up several infrastructure projects on National Waterways-1, IndoB a n g l a d e s h P r o t o c o l R o u t e a n d N W- 2 ( R i v e r Brahmaputra) through the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

The well-knit arterial network of rivers available in the Eastern part of the country coupled with the advantageous

position of Haldia Dock Complex, SMPK having well established connectivity by rail, road & inland waterways deep into the hinterland, would add fillip towards o p t i m a l l y realizing the full potential of multimodal logistic chain in the region.

This paves the way for seamless & robust integrated logistics solutions towards utilising inland waterways and IBP route in a more cost efficient and environment friendly manner thereby benefitting the region and the country as a whole.

An MoU was also entered into between M/s. Brahmaputra Cracker & Polymer Limited (BCPL), a Central Govt. Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata for developing a streamlined logistics chain for movement of feed stock like Naptha, Propane, Pentane etc. required for BCPL’s Petrochemical Complex at Lepetkata (situated about 15 kms. from Dibrugarh in Assam) from Haldia Dock Complex through rail and/or coastal shipping. In the reverse leg, finished products and by-products to be routed for distribution through the Port for consumption of both domestic and international market. For the purpose, tankage facilities for storing of imported feed stock of BCPL and allied facilities are envisaged to be set up at Haldia Dock Complex.

Both parties have agreed to work together for handling increased volumes of Naptha, Propane, Pentane etc. at SMPK. The port has agreed in principle for extending the required facilities and infrastructure to BCPL including land, railway sidings etc. on mutually agreed terms and conditions, as per government policy guidelines.

APM Terminals Pipavav receives Largest Container vessel ever to arrive at Pipavav Port PIPAVAV: APM Terminals Pipavav is delighted to cater to the largest container vessel ever to arrive at the port.

MV Express Athens from Hapag Lloyd is deployed in the TP1 INDAMEX service that caters to the USEC trade. EXPRESS ATHENS has a length overall (LOA) 349 m, beam 49 m, gross tonnage of 113973 and deadweight of 122959 was built in 2011 and can carry appx 10114 TEU. The vessel came from Charleston terminal [US] and will go to the Port Muhammad Bin Qasim [Pakistan].

By handling such large ship at our port showcases our infrastructural capabilities to handle larger vessels safely and quickly.

We are eager to welcome more such vessels to keep moving the wheels of the supply chain.

HMM achieves Record Prot for 2021 SEOUL: HMM recently informed that its revenue rose more than two-fold to KRW 13,794 billion in 2021 from KRW 6,413 billion in 2020.

“The operating profit is substantial, which has increased more than seven-fold to KRW 7,378 billion in 2021 from KRW 981 billion in 2020. The operating margin grew from 15.3 per cent in 2020 to 53.5 per cent in 2021.

The net profit also recorded an extraordinarily dramatic increase with a margin of 38.6 per cent. It was KRW 5,326 billion in 2021 from KRW 124 billion in 2020.

Revenue and profits reached a record high in 2021, primarily driven by high freight rates and efficient fleet operations, including twelve 24,000 TEU containerships.

“Increasing demand from the global economic recovery and growing geopolitical tensions have put upward pressure on oil prices in 2022. As a result, the price gap between LSFO and HFO is expected to widen. The scrubber-fitted capacity of HMM containerships is more than 80 per cent, which will be able to respond to rising oil prices effectively. The global average installation ratio is about 30 per cent, the release said.

India set to sign CEPA trade pact with UAE NEW DELHI: India, which is currently negotiating about half-a-dozen free trade agreements, is set to sign the first such bilateral pact with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during a virtual summit today, with adequate protections for domestic industry.

The comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with the UAE will have clauses protecting the interests of domestic industries and providing them a gateway to markets in West Asia and Africa, three people aware of the matter said. “ N e g o t i a t i o n s f o r C E PA w e r e launched in September 2021 and have been completed,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement announcing the virtual summit between Prime

Minister Narendra Modi and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan. “The agreement will take India-UAE economic and commercial engagement to the next level. [The] UAE is India’s third largest trade partner, and bilateral trade and investment ties are expected to see significant enhancements,” the ministry added.

India is negotiating free trade a g r e e m e n t s ( F TA s ) w i t h t h e U K , Au s t r a l i a , E u r o p e a n U n i o n ( E U ) , Canada and Israel, and all of them have negative lists of items where limited or no tariff concessions will be granted.

This will be done to protect the interests of domestic industry, the three people said.

The CEPA with the UAE will be the

second major trade deal after the IndiaMauritius comprehensive economic cooperation and partnership agreement (CECPA) signed in February 2021, one of t h e p e o p l e s a i d . “ T h e I n d i a - UA E agreement is of strategic significance for both partners. We see a potential of $100 billion in bilateral trade in five years. It is a win-win for both,” he added. During the virtual summit, Modi and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed are expected to lay out their vision for the relations between the two sides at a time when India is celebrating 75 years of independence and the UAE the 50th anniversary of its foundation. The leaders will also discuss bilateral cooperation and regional and international issues, the External Affairs Ministry said.

India economy to grow at quickest pace among large Nations: FinMin report NEW DELHI: The Indian economy is poised to grow at the quickest pace among the league of large nations on the back of various initiatives taken by the government in Budget 2022-23, said the Finance Ministry's Monthly Economic Review.

"The current year may as well end with an economic reset manifest of a postCOVID-19 world...Manufacturing and Construction will be the 'growth drivers', triggered by the PLI schemes and public capex in infrastructure," the review report said.

Agriculture, which continues to see a constant increase in net sown area and crop diversification, will strengthen food buffers while benefiting farmers through generous volumes of procurement at remunerative minimum support prices and income transfers through PM KISAN

scheme, it added.

Observing that the IMF in its January 2022 update has lowered its global growth estimate for 2022, it said India is yet the only large and major country listed by the IMF whose growth projection has been revised upwards in 2022-23.

"In a testimony to the resilience of its people and the farsightedness of its policymaking, the Indian economy that contracted by (-)6.6 per cent in 2020-21 is now projected in 2022-23 to grow the quickest among the league of large nations," it said.

The report said the Budget 2022-23 has strengthened the direction set for India's economy by the previous year's budget.

The capex budget, higher by 35.4 per cent over current year's budget estimates and rising to 4.1 per cent of GDP after inclusion of grants-in-aid to states for

capital works, will power the seven engines of Gatishakti to reduce the infrastructure gap and facilitate private investment in the country, it said.

On the impact of third wave of COVID-19, it said, overall economic activity remained resilient and this is reflected in robust performance of several high frequency indicators like power consumption, PMI manufacturing, exports and e-way bill generation.

"Once the uncertainty and anxiety caused by the Covid-19 virus recedes from people's minds, consumption will pick up and the demand revival will then facilitate the private sector stepping in with investments to augment production to meet the rising demand. Barring external shocks – geo-political and economic – this scenario should play out for the Indian economy in 2022-23," it said.

Indian economy on revival despite unsettling global developments, RBI paper says MUMBAI: India has witnessed recovery in economic activity, striking a path that is diverging from global developments even as its rural demand slackening, Reserve Bank of India said in its monthly bulletin.

The manufacturing and services remain in expansion with optimism on demand parameters and uptick in consumer and business confidence, RBI said in a note prepared by its economic and policy research team.

“The renewed emphasis on public

investment through infrastr ucture development is expected to crowd-in private investment and strengthen job creation and demand in 2022-23,” RBI said in the note on the state of the economy.

However, there are signs of rural demand slackening, even as the farm sector conditions remain robust, the note added.

India’s economic activity is recouping from a brief spell of moderation in January in view of the less virulent effects of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The overall consumer and business

confidence stayed resilient, unlike in the first two waves, on the back of the accelerated pace of vaccination, better prospects on the general economic situation, household incomes and spending.

RBI said that while the continued accommodative monetary policy helped in revival of economic activities, the global spillovers of higher commodity prices, persistence of supply chain bottlenecks and uncertainties have led to a tightening of financial conditions.

East Coast Railway achieves 200 MT loading milestone in 2021-22 in 320 days KOLKATA: The East Coast Railway has achieved 200 MT milestone in loading registering an incremental growth of 26.67 MT and posting an increase of 15 per cent than the corresponding period of last fiscal, from April 1, 2021, to February 14, 2022, an official statement said. During the period, East Coast Railway (ECoR) has loaded 200.50 MT of freight as against 173.82 MT carried in the corresponding period of last fiscal.

The ECoR has achieved this remarkable performance in just 320 days as against 360 days in the corresponding

period of last fiscal.

This could be possible due to the outstanding performance of all the three Divisions of East Coast Railway - Khurda Road, Waltair and Sambalpur.

During the period, ECoR has loaded 113.35 MT of coal, 7.06 MT of raw material for steel plants, 18.46 MT of iron and steel, 27.22 MT of iron ore, 1.13 MT of cement, 2.56 MT of food grains, 5 MT of fertilizer, 2.34 MT of POL and 23.37 MT of freight loaded in containers and other cargo.

Major contributors of freight

include Talcher, Paradip, Dhamra, Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Keonjhar, KK Line, steel plants, aluminium plants and from other places under the ECoR jurisdiction. Relentless round the clock close monitoring and outstanding supervision, dedicated and sincere work force brought this performance, the ECoR said in the statement.

During the period, 132.54 MT of freight was carried from Khurda Road Division, 57.21 MT of freight from Waltair Division and 10.73 MT of freight carried from Sambalpur Division.

COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers launches Construction Vehicle Express Delivery Service for Overseas Markets BEIJING: To ensure an unimpeded supply chain for overseas markets and facilitate the export of China’s national brands, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers launched the express delivery service for construction vehicles manufactured by its major clients during the Chinese New Year holidays, including Sany Group, LiuGong and XCMG. The export vehicles were carried by multi-purpose vessels M.V. XING FU SONG, M.V. TIAN WANG XING and M.V. LIAN HUA SONG, which departed from Shanghai South Port, Maoming of Guangdong Province and Rizhao of Shandong Province respectively to Jakarta, Indonesia, delivering high-quality products “made in China” for local infrastructure construction projects.

PIL launches new service between China and Australia - Sino Australia Express (SAE) SINGAPORE: Pacific International Lines (PIL) is pleased to introduce a new weekly express service connecting China and Australia.

The new service, known as Sino Australia Express (SAE), will commence on 10 March 2022 from Qingdao.

SAE aims to augment PIL’s existing services connecting China with Australia, and is served by a consortium of six vessels with an average capacity of 3900 TEUs, jointly deployed by PIL, T.S. Lines, Yang Ming and Sea Lead Shipping.

Mr Tonnie Lim, Chief Trade Ofcer, PIL, said, “We are launching this new SAE service to meet increasing demand from our customers for a more direct

and faster service between the key ports in China and three main cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in Australia. This reflects the ongoing healthy trade volume between China and Australia, and PIL is pleased to be able to support our customers in benefiting from this positive growth trend between the two countries.”

The ports of call for the new SAE service are: Qingdao – Shanghai – Nansha – Shekou – Sydney – Melbour ne – Brisbane – Qingdao.
