NEW DELHI: The 12 Major Ports in India have outpaced Non-Major Ports in handling higher quantum of coastal cargo during the first seven months of the financial year 2025, unlike last year Paradip Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and MormugaoPorthaveledthecharge.
While Major Ports handled 1097 lakh tonnes of Coastal cargo and between April-October 2024 (a growth of four per cent), Non-Major Ports handled 770 lakh tonnes of coastal cargo — a decline of one per cent — during t h e s a m e n i n e - m o n t h p e r i o d In comparison, a year ago, between April-October 2023, coastal cargo volumes at non-major ports had grown at 21 per cent, while the growth at major ports stood at 3.6 per cent.
In the current financial year, Major Ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra and Mormugao in Goa have registered impressive growth rates. While overseas cargo at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra grew a little over three per cent between April-October 2024, the coastal cargo volumes jumped by over 38 per cent in t h e s a m e s e v e n m o n t h p e r i o d
During the same period, the overseas cargo volumes at Mormugao dipped by 16 per cent, while the coastal cargo volumes rose by almost 23 per cent.
Steel cargo from the eastern coast and cement from Gujarat has helped boost coastal cargo volumes at Jawaharlal Nehru Port. “After the Shallow Water Berth and the Coastal Berth was taken over by Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal under the PPP mode in May 2023, there was a substantial increase in steel cargo coming from the eastern coast There is a 35 per cent increase in steel cargo this year. Similarly, there is also an increase in cement being shipped b y U l t r a t e c h f r o m G u j a r a t , ” a spokesperson of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) was quoted as saying.
India’s biggest Major Ports by volumes Paradip in Odisha continues to handle one-third of the total coastal cargo volumes of the country. The port saw a growth of 5 5 percent in coastalcargovolumesthisyear Theport, which achieved 100 million tonnes of cargo volumes on December 9, said Coastal Ther mal Coal handling
constituted more than 30 percent of total cargo volume handled at the Port this year This cargo has shown a 3 57 percent growth this year “Paradip port is emerging as a coastal shipping hub of the country , ” stated Paradip Port Authority (PPA) in a statement earlier this week. In comparison, coastal cargo volumes at Non-Major Ports of the country are being led by the ports in Gujarat The cluster of ports under Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) handled a massive 72 per cent of coastal cargo among Non-Major Ports during A p r i l - O c t o b e r 2 0 2 4 . T h e G M B Non-Major Ports which includes private ports saw a 4.4 per cent growth in coastal cargo While states like Odisha saw a 75 per cent rise in cargo. Karnataka too saw a 18 per cent jump in coastal cargo. Despite the growth seen in few states, the cumulative coastal cargo throughput of Non-Major Ports fell by one per cent to 770 lakh tonnes between April-October 2024 as the Non-Major Ports in states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu reported a decline of 15 per cent and 24 per cent in cargo throughput, respectively
Sarbananda Sonowal unveils ‘Jalvahak’ to boost Inland Waterways, cargo movement incentivised on NW1, NW2
KOLKATA: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Water ways (MoPSW), Shri Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled a major policy for Cargo Promotion – ‘Jalvahak’ – incentivising movement of long haul cargo via National Waterways 1 (river Ganga) as well as for National Waterways 2 (river Brahmaputra) and National Waterways 16 (river Barak) here.
T h e U n i o n M i n i s t e r Shri Sarbananda Sonowal also flagged off cargo ships – MV AAI, MV Homi Bhaba along with MV Trishul with two Dumb Barges Ajay & Dikhu – from the GR Jetty here. This marks the beginning of fixed Scheduled Service of Cargo Vessels from Haldia for NW 1 and NW 2. The Fixed Day Scheduled Sailing Service will ply vessels between Kolkata – Patna – Varanasi – Patna – Kolkata stretch of NW 1 and between Kolkata and Pandu in Guwahati on NW 2 via Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). The Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur and Minister of State for Transportation (Independent Charge), Govt of UP, Daya Shankar Singh also joined the significant occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister Shri Sonowal said, “Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, the Government has made a concerted effort to realise the tremendous potential of our rich network of inland waterways. With its advantage of being an economical, ecologically sound and efficient mode of transportation, we want to boost cargo movement via waterways, to decongest
the railways and roadways. Jalvahak scheme incentivises long haul cargo on NW1, NW2 & and NW16, and provides an opportunity for the trade interests to explore movement of cargo via waterways with positive economic value proposition. Further, the regular scheduled freight service, which began from Kolkata, will ensure that the cargo is transported and delivered within a stipulated time frame This will also generate confidence among our users about the readiness of national waterways for regular movement of cargo in an efficient, economical and environmentally responsible mode of transportation By empowering our vessel operators with this incentive scheme and encouraging our business enterprises with safe and timely delivery of cargo in a cost effective manner, this adds meaningfully to the H o n o u r a b l e P r i m e M i n i s t e r Shri Narendra Modiji’s vision of transformation via transportation as India sails towards becoming a Viksit Bharat.”
The first vessel – MV Trishul with two Dumb Barges Ajay and Dikhu – is carrying 1500 tonnes of cement from GR Jetty in Kolkata to Pandu in Guwahati via Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). The second vessel – MV Aai – is carrying 1000 tonnes of Gypsum to Patna while the third vessel – MV Homi Bhaba – is carrying 200 tonnes of coal to Varanasi.
The cargo promotion scheme provides direct incentive to the cargo owners to transport their goods via inland waterways for a distance of more
than 300 kms. This is a joint effort by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the nodal agency of waterways development in the country, as well as by the Inland & Coastal Shipping L i m i t e d ( I C S L ) , a f u l l y o w n e d subsidiary of the Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCIL). The ‘Jalvahak’ scheme encourages to reduce logistics costs, decongest road and railways, and adapting to a sustainable mode of transportation.
The ‘Jalvahak’ scheme offers reimbursement upto 35% of total operating expenditure incurred w h i l e t r a n s p o r t i n g c a r g o v i a waterways on NW 1 (Ganga river), NW 2 (Brahmaputra river) & NW 16 (Barak river) via Indo Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route. To encourage the b u s i n e s s p r o p o s i t i o n o f v e s s e l operators, the scheme encourages cargo owners to hire vessels owned or operated by organisations other than IWAI or ICSL. The incentive scheme is ideal for major shipping companies, freight forwarders, trade bodies and associations that handle bulk and containerised cargo. By opting for the s c h e m e , i t p r o v i d e s t h e m a n opportunity to optimise their supply chain network. The scheme is initially valid for 3 years.

BHAVNAGAR / GANDHINAGAR : Union Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday inaugurated a series of projects totaling Rs 149 crore in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district.
“Bhavnagar is being developed as the largest hub for container manufacturing in India Currently, 95% of containers are constructed in China. In Bhavnagar, three companies have already begun container construction. The state and Central Governments are committed to transforming Bhavnagar into a Container manufacturing hub,” Mandaviya said while addressing reporters.
In a parallel developments, Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel hosted New Jersey’s Lieutenant Governor Tahesha L. Way in Gandhinagar on Friday Their discussions focused on strengthening the sister-state agreement through cultural, economic, and industrial
exchanges. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to increasing people-to-people ties, facilitated by Index-B as the main channel for ongoing dialogue and partnerships.
Chief Minister Patel underscored Gujarat’s leadership in green hydrogen, renewable energy, and fintech sectors, while Lieutenant Governor Way showed interest in exploring mutual investments and collaborative projects.
NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Road, Transport and H i g h w a y s
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor that the uncertainty over the construction of a road connecting Vizhinjam International Seaport to the NH66 will be resolved within 10 days Shri Gadkari gave this assurance in hisresponsetotheissueraisedbyTharoorintheLokSabha
The road connecting the Vizhinjam port to NH66 is important for the effective movement of goods, particularly containers, in and out of the port.
The proposed inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Seaport next month heightens the need for this infrastructural development. According to Tharoor, unless the road and rail connectivity are available for the movement of containers, the port cannot be utilized at its potential as a major maritime hub.
Tharoor laid particular stress on making robust connectivity for the port by stating that the port will definitely play a pivotal role in uplifting the economic growth of the region by providing easier and smooth trade flows across India and globally It will only hamper the
free movement of goods, thus hindering the capabilities of the port.
Shri Gadkari said that he completely agree with Tharoor’s assessment of the matter and that the road must be developed for the prosperity of the port. Long discussions on the construction of the road, the Union Minister revealed, have been held by him with Kerala’s Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, in the last few days. This means everyone will pull his weight to treat the issue on time.
The confidence by Gadkari will ensure that once the port is launched full-scale, it will begin functioning effectively because of the timely completion of the road construction, which has made easy the transportation of items into and out of it to ensure that processes within it are efficient for competitiveness at the global level.
Tharoor expressed gratitude to the Union minister for adopting a favourable stance on this critical issue concerning the port and stated that he would continue to assess the progress of efforts to connect Vizhinjam with rail and road networks and take necessary actions.
GANDHINAGAR : Inspired by global port cities like Rotterdam, Dubai, and Antwerp, the Gujarat Government is reviving a decadeold plan to develop India’s first greenfield port city Spanning 500 sq km, the ambitious project aims for completion by 2047, with an estimated investment of Rs. 1.5 lakh crore Once realized, it promises to give Gujarat a significant maritime advantage on the national stage.
At the heart of the project is a massive port designed to handle 500 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), surrounded by integrated port-related industries, marine activities, residential areas, and recreational facilities. “This is a long-term initiative, and we are currently in the process of selecting a site from four shortlisted locations,” said a senior state Government official.
Gujarat currently dominates cargo handling at nonmajor ports, accounting for 66 percent of the total, far ahead of Andhra Pradesh (14 percent) and Maharashtra (9 percent). Between April and October 2024 alone, Gujarat’s
non-major ports, including private hubs like Mundra and Pipavav, managed 229 million tonnes of cargo By 2047, the state aims to quadruple its capacity to handle 2,200 MTPA, solidifying its maritime supremacy
Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Surat, a n d Va l s a d a r e t h e f o u r shortlisted sites for the planned port-city. These locations were selected based on key factors such as proximity to deepwater access, availability of waterfront space, connectivity to robust road and rail networks, and potential to support sustainable industrial growth.
Government insiders say the strongest contender among the four sites is Maroli/Nargol in Valsad district. Bhavnagar’s strengths include its deep draught and strategic location, while Surat located near the industrial powerhouse of Hazira — finds favour for its established infrastructure and close links to major ports and industries, making it ideal for both industrial and portled development.

ANTWERP: One year after the official launch of Certified Pick up (Cpu), the platform is playing a key role in Port of Antwerp-Bruges' container traffic The port's logistics processes have been made more efficient, transparent and secure. What has already been achieved? And what is still in the pipeline?
1 million containers
Since its launch in January 2024, no fewer than 1 058 249 containers have been collected via Certified Pick up. This translates to an average of 3 600 pick-ups per day v i a t r u c k , b a r g e o r t r a i n T h e p l a t f o r m h a s n e a r l y 22 000 active users, more than 4 000 companies and operates in 18 different locations. Recently, ATO Antwerp was the last terminal to join, meaning that all terminals in Antwerp now use the platform.
When launching a new platform like Certified Pick up, good support is important Every day, the support team processes about 5 calls and handles about 20 tickets
A smarter and safer port Certified Pick up creates more efficiency and security. Concreteevidenceoftheimpact is the reduction in claims to customs regarding container pick-up. Thanks to improved chain information, high-risk containers can be identified faster. Cooperation with customs, which also further deploys (mobile) scanning technology, makes smuggling d r u g s t h r o u g h t h e p o r t significantly more difficult. Although the exact effect on drug smuggling is difficult to measure, the platform helps the federal police with their risk analysis and targeted actions.
What’s next?
In the first quarter of 2025, we will finalise the roadmap drawn up together with the port community. For instance, we will make the user interface more user-friendly and ensure that CPu remains a stable platform without too many modifications Integration with IRP (Inbound Release Platform) is also on the agenda. Afterwards, we are working on the implementation of Certified Pick up in Zeebrugge
