MORTH sets target to construct 60 km of roads per day in 2023
NEW DELHI:
Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari hassaidthathisdepartment’stargetisto construct 60 km of roads per day in 2023. The Minister also mentioned that so far 12000 km of highways have been constructed in 2022. The 60 km per day construction target is for the financial 2022-23, the Government has already started work in this direction. Road sector would continue to be the flag bearer of investment in the infrastructure space, experts said. In 2023, the Government is expected to continue with its thrust on the infrastructure sector, a lion’s share of which wouldbetowardsthehighwayssector.
Itislearntthatthelistofprojectstobeprioritizedhasbeen prepared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The states that are due for elections in 2023 are likely to see maximumprojectexecution.
The execution of infrastructure projects in a timely manner will be done keeping an eye on General Elections in 2024.Industryexpertsareoftheviewthatroadconstructionis not the only barometer to gauge the development in the highways sector and the same can be ascertained by other parametersaswell.
“For instance, digital toll collection and efforts towards road safety measures is a step in the right direction by the central government. Now it is time for the states to step up their efforts in this direction,” Arindam Guha, Partner, GovernmentandPublicServicesLeader,DeloitteIndia.
In order to have a seamless supply chain movement across the country, there is a need for a robust highway infrastructure to support it. PM Gati Shakti targets to cut logistic costs, increase cargo handling capacity and reduce the turnaround time.Theplanaimstolendmorepowerandspeedtoprojectsby connectingallconcerneddepartmentsononeplatform.
TheGovernmenthadsaidthattheinfrastructureschemes of various Ministries and State Governments will be designed andexecutedwithacommonvision.Industryexpertsfeelthat the supply chain growth is linked with growth in logistics. “There are three parts where India spends its logistics cost, out of $200 billion spend on logistics about $100-120 billion is spent on trucking, as it is the largest mover of goods in the Country. But it is inefficient because it is fragmented. But it can be made efficient through digitization,” NeeleshMundra,PartneratMcKinsey&Company.
A lot of investment has gone into the logistics sector with various private companies investing in warehouses ahead of the demand. The year 2022 proved to be a year of infrastructure development and similar is the expectation from 2023. In the coming year, the experts feel that the Government should focus on attracting more private players. “The year 2022 was good in terms of augmentation of the infrastructure including the ports and airports,” Guha said, adding there is need for greater private participation and the needtoincreasethecontributionoflongterminvestors.”
He added that Textiles Sector delegation from across the country have reached Kashi to participate in the two-day event. He hoped that after meetings and discussions with the participants,aroadmapfortheSectorwouldbeprepared.E-Mail: dailyshipping@gmail.com

SEOUL: South Korea’s flagship line, HMM, has invited tenders from its four largest compatriot shipbuilders to build nine 8,000TEUContainerships.
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Samsung Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said they had provided their best prices for methanol-fuelled ships fordeliveryin2025to2026.
Based on similar recent orders, 8,000- TEU newbuild pricesareintheregionof$95meach.
A spokesperson for HMM was quoted as saying that theorderwaspartofitsmedium-to-long-termstrategyof
expanding its boxship fleet to 1.2mn TEU by 2026, from 820,000TEU.
In July, HMM ordered three 1,800 TEU ships from HHI subsidiary Hyundai Mipo at $35.5mn each for delivery in 2024, and last year split orders for a dozen 13,000TEUshipsequallybetweenHHIandDSME.
Methanolisoneofthefueloptionsseveralshipowners are considering to comply with the global target of decarbonisation by 2050, as it is thought to be easier to storeandtransportthanLNG.
Ships in the 7,000-8,000 TEU range have been sought after by various operators looking to increase capacity in mid-haul lanes, such as the Far EastPersian Gulf.
•Along-term strategic collaboration on “cold ironing” to broaden the use of onshore power supply for all fully-fitted CMACGM containerships at the Port of Shanghai.
• Significant improvement of air quality; reduction in CO2 emissions and noise expected.
• CMACGM and SIPG’s unwavering commitment to protect the environment and decarbonize shipping and logistics.
SHANGHAI: The CMA CGM Group, a global player in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (“SIPG”)signedalong-termstrategic collaboration to develop the mass scaleuseof“coldironing”technology, the use of onshore power supply for containerships at the Port of Shanghai. From today all fully-fitted CMA CGM containerships calling at the port of Shanghai will systematically use the onshore power connection. By allowing ships to shut down auxiliary engines and use an onshore power supply while at berth, “cold ironing” eliminates sulfur oxide, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxide emissions, significantly improving air qualitywhilealsoreducingnoisepollution.
In late November 2022, the CMA CGM Group and SIPG successfully completed the technical trial of the “cold ironing” facilities of Yangshan Terminal in the port of Shanghai, which involved the CMA CGM Group’s 13 982 TEU containership APL FULLERTON and several other vessels.
For newbuild and retrofitted vessels – an ambitious deployment
The Group’s newbuild, most recent vessels are now equippedwiththetechnologyrequiredtouse“coldironing”, and CMA CGM is conducting an extensive retrofitting program so other containerships can also use an onshore power supply. By the end of 2022, 13 CMA CGM vessels calling at the port of Shanghai will connect to the onshore power supply, and by mid-2023, this number will increase to reach50.
Shipping and logistics’ decarbonization as part of CMA CGMandSIPG’slongtermstrategicpartnership
Beyond significantly improving air quality and reducing CO2 emissions and noise pollution, this cooperation follows the successful pioneering of LNG simultaneous operation (SIMOPS) bunkering achieved in March 2022 in Shanghai, and represents yet another major milestone as part of CMA CGM and SIPG’s strategic partnership to accelerate theshippingandlogisticsindustry’sdecarbonization.
The CMA CGM Group is committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 and intends to accelerate the energy transition in shipping and logistics, led by an enhanced energymix.
By the end of 2026, the CMA CGM Group will have a fleet of 77 LNG powered vessels of various sizes. 32 “bio and e -methane ready” vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines and LNG-powered are already in service. The engines deployed on these vessels already have the technical
capability of using bio and e -methane, a source of carbonneutralfuels.
In September, the CMA CGM Group announced the creation of a Fund for Energies, backed by a five-year, 1.5 billion budget, to accelerate its energy transition and achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050. The Fund is dedicated to increasing the pace of decarbonization across the Group’s worldwide ocean, ground and air freight shippingactivity, aswellasitslogisticsbusiness.
In particular, the Fund for Energies will support the development and industrial-scale production of renewable energies (biofuels, biomethane, e-methane, green methanol, etc.), while accelerating the decarbonization of portterminals, warehouses, andlandvehiclefleets.
Ludovic RENOU, CEO of CMA CGM China, commented: “CMA CGM is steadfastly committed to installing more environmentally responsible solutions on board our vessels, the Group supports cold ironing and we will continue to equip our fleet accordingly. We are breaking new ground by partnering with SIPG, our strategic partner, to collaborate on the mass scale cold ironing, another landmark in our partnership after the historic China’s first LNG SIMOPS bunkering jointly completed by us in March this year. Looking ahead, we will continue to join hands and drive forward more meaningful transformations to pioneer theenergytransitiontogether.”
Wenbin Luo, General Manager of Engineering and Equipment Department of SIPG, commented: “SIPG has always been committed to the development of green ports and has always supported the energy transformation and decarbonizationofshipping.Thisyear,SIPGandCMACGM jointly established the LNG bunkering Center at Shanghai Port. Today, SIPG and CMA CGM have confirmed the longterm strategic cooperation of cold ironing, and SIPG will continue to provide onshore power supply services for CMA CGM vessels at Shanghai Port. We firmly believe that enhanced cooperation between ports and shipping companieswillacceleratethejourneyofdecarbonization.”

LONDON: The Shipping industry can overcome geopolitical challenges and thrive, said the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Greek Branch at its 17th Annual Forum.
The recent event, ‘Moving Forward with the World in Turmoil’, was held on December 7 at the Eugenides Foundationandwasbroadcastedlivearoundtheworld
Natalia Margioli – Komninou FICS, Managing Director of the ICS Greek Branch and Hellenic Management Centre –welcomed the Minister of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy, Giannis Plakiotakis, the British Ambassador to Greece, Matthew Lodge and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of StateforEurope,LeoDocherty.
Ms Margioli explained how this year’s theme aimed to capturethemanychallengesfacingstakeholders.
She said: “Shipping companies have continued to advance theskillsoftheirhumanresourcesandthishascontributedto the resilient character and progression demonstrated by Greek professionals. Continuous professional development and education is integral to navigating an increasingly complexworld.
Nicolas A. Tsavliris, FICS, Chairman of the ICS Greek Branch and Tsavliris Salvage Group addressed a very warm welcometotheattendeesoftheForum.
He said: “The shipping industry remains resilient, robust and adaptable. Historically, it always emerges stronger after
challenging times and the ICS has an important role play in theseunpredictabletimes.”
A special address was made by H.E. Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Mr Ioannis Plakiotakis. The Minister noted the importance of the transport sector in ensuring resilient supply chains and creating reliable mechanisms for vessels to move smoothly and safely worldwide. NEW DELHI: India may remain at the top of the chart as the world’s largest supplier of rice despite imposing stringent restrictionsonexportsofthegraininSeptember.Accordingto Worldstopexports, India was the top exporter of the grain supplying 37.5 per cent of the total share. Though the ban on exports of broken rice has dented its market somewhat, the overall outbound shipment will not be impacted much. The policy restricting exports primarily impacts the broken rice category. Besides, the Centre imposed a 20 per cent export tariffonnon-basmatiandnon-parboiledriceshipments.
According to the All India Rice Exporters’ Association, India registered a 11.5 per cent growth in exports of basmati rice. Exports to the Middle East rose by 11.11 per cent. In the non basmati category, India clocked a growth of 5.6 per cent. However, there has been a drop of 12.8 per cent in exports of non basmati in October compared to the corresponding monthinthepreviousyear.
“With the ban, there has been a dip in exports but despite
that we may remain at the top of the chart as the largest exporter of rice due to sheer volume. whatever data is available to use until now goes on to show that India is at the topslot,”VinodKaul,SeniorExecutiveDirector,AllIndiaRice Exporters’Association, said.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its report said that India’s rice exports may decline to 19.5 million MT in 2023 from a record 21 million MT of shipment this year. It added that India remains the most competitively priced source for rice in Asia. Indian rice priced atlessthan$400atonne,isstillcheapercomparedtothegrain soldbyThailand,VietnamandPakistan.
Earlier, the government, in an official statement, said the export of broken rice increased by more than 43 times in the past four years. It added that there has been a rise in global demand for broken rice due to a geopolitical scenario which hasimpactedpricemovementofcommoditiesincludingthose relatedtoanimalfeed.
