Authority (JNPA), India’s best performing Port, signed a concession agreement with JM Baxi Ports and Logistics Ltd. on 15th November 2022, to Upgrade, Equip and O&M of Shallow Water Berth (SWB) and Coastal Berth (CB) Terminals through PPP mode. JNPA is India’s first 100% LandlordMajorPort.

The SWB and CB terminals will be upgraded and managed by an SPV named “Nhava Sheva Distribution TerminalPrivateLimited”formedbyJMBaxiGroup.

The agreement was signed in the presence of ShriSanjaySethi,IAS,Chairman,JNPA,ShriUnmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Dy. Chairman, JNPA, Shri Dhruv Krishna Kotak, Managing Director, J M Baxi Group andalltheHODsofJNPA.

Speaking at the occasion, Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPA said, “SWB and CB will now be a PPP terminal, the successful bidder being J M Baxi Group.

This opens up massive last-mile solutions and broadens access to the hinterland. At a time when the GoI is focusing on increasing the modal share of coastal cargo, and industries looking at greener options, this new infrastructure can play a crucialrole.

The concessionaire has to Upgrade, equip, Operate, maintain and transfer this terminal at the end of the Concession period of 30 years. The terminal will be developed in one single phase of 3 years. JNPA will continue to develop and provide supporting infrastructurefacilities.

Many of the major global ports are today landlord facilities, whose key responsibilities include marketing. JNPA will now be taking up marketing in a more streamlined manner, with the Authority doing common port business development.”

The 4 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTA) capacity shallow water berth (SWB) has a length of 445 meters of which 125 m has been developed as RoRo Terminal. The SWB can accommodate vessels up to 30,000DTmakingitthemost preferred facility for Coastal as well as foreign cargo. SWB is a multi-cargo terminal capable of handling container, cement, general cargo, and liquid cargo vessels both Foreign and Coastal. The USP of this multipurpose clean cargo terminal is the ability to connect coastal containers through Ro-Ro ships, revolutionizing the water-based logistics eco-system of Nhava Sheva making it the most connected hub in the country.

JNPA has developed the coastal berth with a vision to provide a dedicated berth for coastal cargo in order to boost coastal shipping. The project was partly funded under the ‘Sagarmala’ program of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to provide a boost to coastal cargo movement. The coastal berth will aid the smooth and faster coastal movement of cargo through a green channel and help increase the share of coastal shipping in the domestic cargo movement and as well as facilitate the export-import community. The coastal berth has the capacity to handle about 2.8 million metric tonnes of coastal cargo per annum (MMTA) like steel, cement, container, fertilizer, foodgrainsandafewothercleancargoes.Theberthhasa backup area of 9 hectares for cargo storage and handling. As part of the project, J M Baxi will provide an automated

mechanized cement handling system and connected conveying and silos for the storage of cement which will enablefasterturnaroundofvessels.

The coastal berth, which was completed in November 2020, aims to provide better infrastructure for coastal shipping and decongest rail and road networks, ensuring cost-competitive and effective multi-modal transportationsolutions.

In all 28 International Cruise Ships will visit Mumbai Port in the cruise season2022-2023.

In 2019-2020 five Indian Ports handled 149 International Ship movements with 2,26,329 passengers. The maximum number of International Cruise Ships were handled by Mumbai and Cochin Ports i.e. 44 each, followed by Mormugao (38), NewMangalore(21)andChennaiPort(2).

Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways have taken various steps to attract Cruise Ships such as Guaranteed berths to Cruise Ships, Ousting Charges removed, e-Visa implemented, Rationalization of Cruise Tariff, Standard Operation Procedure (SOP-2) for uniform, pre-defined processes in Ports. Further the e-visa facility available at five Major Cruise Ports is proposed to be extended for three other ports viz. Vizag, Porbandar and Port Blair. For the purpose of segregation of domestic and international cruise passengers in Mumbai Port, Shamiyana has been erecteddedicatedfordomesticcruisepassengers.

Development, modernization and upgradation of Cruise Terminals is being carried out at existing 6 Cruise Ports of India. (Mumbai, Mormugao, Cochin, New Mangalore, Vishakapatnam and Chennai). A new Mumbai International Cruise Terminal of 4,15,000 Sq. Ft. area having state of the art facilities is being constructed at Mumbai Port at a cost of Rs. 495 Crores, whichisexpectedtobecommissionedbyJuly2024.

A Task Force co-chaired by Secretary (Shipping) and Secretary (Tourism) is set up to steer the promotional

measures for cruise tourism at highest level jointly with all stakeholders. First Incredible India International CruiseConferencewasorganizedinMay2022atMumbai with the theme as “Develop India as a Cruise Hub”. Duringtheconference,aHighLevelAdvisoryCommittee comprising various Indian Government Officials and Foreign Industry was constituted to advise the Task Force on measures considered necessary for fast growth ofCruiseTourisminIndia.

International Cruise Companies are optimistic about theIndianmarket.Bothcruisepassengersandoperators will enjoy the experience and it is expected that Indian Ports can expect many more ships to visit India and also designate local ports as home port in the near future. India has an opportunity to grow cruise tourism and attract international cruise operators. Indian Ports are focusing on this segment targeting to receive around 955 Ships and 4 million passengers by 2041, out of which Mumbai Port is expected to handle around 700 ships and 3.2millionpassengers.

CONCOR starts Reefer Train from ICD Balli to JNPA

PANJI: The first-ever Reefer export train from ICD Balli, Goa terminal was received at JNPT. The transit time from final departure at Balli till placementatPort was less than 22hours.

There was an over 50% increase in fisheries exports from Goa in 2021-22comparedtothepreviousyear.

Goa has exported 36,057 tonne of fish bringing in Rs 730 crore during the financial year 2021-22. In 2020-21, the state exported 16,549 tonne of fish, which brought in a revenueofRs435.25lakh.

Majority of the exports — 29,426 tonne — in 2021-22 were to South East Asia. The USA and China were also major buyers with 1,569 tonne shipped to the USA and 2,593tonnetoChina.

Compared to this, exports to South East Asia stood at 9,055 tonne in 2020-21. However, besides South East Asia, GoaalsosawlargeordersfromtheEuropeanUnion(EU)

andtheMiddleEastbesidesChinathatyear.

Frozen fish accounts for the highest quantity of seafood exported to various nations yearly. In 2021-22, 28,104 tonne of frozen fish were exported compared to 7,909tonnethepreviousfinancialyear.

Other types of seafood exported are shrimps, frozen cuttlefishandfrozensquid,amongothers.

While fish exports to the Middle East and the European Union dropped, exports to Japan, South East AsiaandtheUSAincreasedsteadilylastyear.

Fish export details are monitored by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA). Earlier Goa used to have its own MPEDA office in Panaji. Halarnkar said in the legislative assembly question (LAQ) that the export details are being monitored by MPEDA, Mangalore in Karnataka which functions under theDepartmentofCommerce,GovernmentofIndia.

SeaLead announces new Managing Director for South Asia and Middle East

MUMBAI: SeaLead has announced the appointment of Mr. Shivaramakrishnan Mahadevan as Managing Director, South Asia and Middle East, based in Mumbai, India and reporting to SeaLead Managing Director, HenrySchmidl.

In this new role, Shiva will work closely with SeaLead’s headquarters team in Singapore to advance commercial competencies, build and enhance customer relationships, and develop products and services to grow thecompany’spresenceintheregion.

In addition to these commercial and operational activities, he will also be responsible for vendor and agencyrelationshipsintheregion.

Shiva Mahadevan was recently Chief Executive Officer at Perma Shipping Line Pte Ltd in Singapore and

has worked earlier with American President Lines (APL) and Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) inthecountry.

Maersk expects Logistics Revenues to exceed Shipping in coming years : Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON: A.P. MollerMaersk A/S expects logistics revenue to surpass the ocean business by the middle of the decade as the container giant warns of “dark clouds on the horizon” for global shipping demand, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Maersk Chief Executive Søren Skou said in an earnings call Wednesday that the Denmark-based company, one of the world’s largest container lines by volume, is maintaining its focus on transforming from mostly an ocean shipping operator to becoming a global logisticsjuggernaut.

Mr. Skou said the strategy should help insulate Maersk from the boom-and-bust cycles of the container industry.

“Our strategy is not to gain market share in ocean,” Mr. Skou said. “It is to gain share in our customers’ wallet oflogisticsspend.”

Oceancarriersarefacingasharpreversalinfortunes. DemandforspaceoncontainershipsduringtheCovid-19 pandemic drove hundreds of billions of dollars in profits for the world’s largest ocean carriers. This year, shipping volumes and rates are plunging as consumers pull back on spending amid rising inflation and a war in Ukraine thathastriggeredaglobalenergycrisis.

Maersk’s revenue in the most recent quarter grew 37% compared with the year-ago period to $22.8 billion, thanks largely to higher contracted freight rates negotiatedearlierin2022whendemandforspacewasata high. Net profit jumped to a record $8.9 billion from $5.4 billion in the year-ago quarter, the latest in a series of big earnings figures that have pumped billions of dollars ofcashintothecontainerlines.

Maersk officials say cargo volumes in the quarter fell 7.6%, including a 10% drop on the busiest trade routes between China and Western nations, and carriers have been pulling capacity from the market as freight rates havesagged.

“It is clear that freight rates have peaked and started to normalize during the quarter, driven by both decreasing demand and easing of supply chain congestion,”Mr.Skousaid.

The average spot market cost of shipping a container from Asia to the U.S. West Coast during the last week of October was $2,494, according to online freight marketplaceFreightos,down85%fromayearago.

Mr. Skou’s outlook was one of the darkest so far in a container shipping sector that has seen trade volumes declinerapidlythisfall.

Jeremy Nixon, CEO of Singapore-based container shipping line Ocean Network Express, said in a recent statement that strains in the global economy have “led to a sharp correction in spot market rates, due to overall demand dropping quicker than the market can adjust supplysidecapacity.”

But Mr. Nixon said he expects the container shipping market to return to greater balance between supply and demandinthenextquarter.

Maersk says it is somewhat insulated from the spotmarket volatility because a large share of its business comesthroughlong-termcontracts.

Contract negotiations in the next year will be heavily influenced by spot rates, however, and won’t protect Maersk from a broader downturn in trade demand. “When the customers themselves suffer from the effects of economic decline, volume can’t be conjured out of the thinair,”Mr.Skousaid.

He said the company is trying with its logistics investments “to break away from the cyclicality of the shipping industry and the commoditized nature of traditional container shipping. We remain convinced that creating closer relationships with customers and maintaining an intense focus on their needs is the way to do so.”

Maersk officials point out that importers and exporters spend eight to nine times more on domestic logistics, such as trucking, warehousing and delivery, thanoninternationaloceanfreight.

The company has made a series of acquisitions in logistics and inland transport in recent years, capped by the $3.6 billion purchase completed in August of LF Logistics, the Hong Kong-based contract logistics arm of supply-chaingiantLi&Fung

Maersk’s logistics revenues reached $4.2 billion in the most recent quarter, which included one month’s revenues from the LF Logistics acquisition. Ocean revenue in the same period surpassed $18 billion.

“We are well on the way towards a significant market position in the logistics industry,” Mr. Skou said. “And at some point in this decade, probably around the middle of the decade, we expect our logistics revenue to surpassthatofocean.”
