A.P. Moller – Maersk expands its warehousing footprint to over half a million sq. ft. in Bangladesh
Riding on the increasing demand from customers, Maersk opened doors to a 210,000 sq. . warehouse in Cha ogram to strengthen its commitment to Bangladesh
DHAKA: A.P. Moller –Maersk announced the expansion of its warehousing footprint in Chattogram. Commissioned in cooperation with ISATL, Maersk has embarked on the second phase of its partnership with ISATL, which will give exclusive access to 210,000 square feet of a state-of-the-art export custom bonded warehouse for its customers. and limited warehousing capacity in the market, Maersk aims to close the gap between higher demand and shortageofsupplythroughthisfacilityatChattogram.
Maersk and ISATL had first collaborated and entered into an agreement towards the end of 2021 and withina periodof 14 months,ISATLprovided200,000 square feet of export custom bonded warehouse to Maersk. Given ISATL’s expertise and proven track record to deliver warehouses of this scale made them an obvious choice for Maersktopartnerforthisexpansion.
Vikash Agarwal, Managing Director, Maersk South Asia, commented, “We continue to invest and strengthen our commitment to Bangladesh with the expansion of our footprint in the country. We strongly believe in the potential of this country and its exporters, and we are fully committed to participating and playing a role in their respectivegrowthstories.”
In recent times, Bangladesh has seen a slight slowdown in exports owing to the ongoing geopolitical situation that has led to reduced demand for retail and lifestyle goods in theWesternmarkets. However, thetrendisexpectedtoturn around as inventory restocking begins, giving a boost to exportsoutofthecountry.Withthedemandpickingupagain
Maersk also offers another 100,000 square feet of warehousing space in partnership with Vertex Depot, which was inaugurated earlier this year in the month of February. With the latest expansion, Maersk has on offer over half a million sq. ft. of dedicated export warehouse in Chattogram to its customers. Further, Maersk also offers another 300,000 sq. ft. of flexible warehousing capacity through local partnerships to customers in case of short term requirements. In a market with capacity constraints, this expansion will assist Maersk’s customers to have assured access to consolidation space on a long-term basis, creating stability of operations and thereby eliminating the uncertainty, especiallyduringthepeakseasons.

Yang Ming Publishes Q1 2023 Financial Report and approves the Procurement of LNG Dual-Fuel Container Vessels
TAIWAN: Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation
(Yang Ming) (May 12) held the 383rd Board meeting that passed the Q1 2023 financial report and approves the procurement of LNG dual-fuel container vessels. Accordingtothisreport,theconsolidatedrevenuesinQ1 totaled NT$ 36.95 billion (US$ 1.22 billion). The net profit after tax stood at NT$ 3.4 billion (US$ 112 million), withanEPSofNT$0.97.
The demand in the global market registered a downward incline because of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, the consecutive imposition of interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and the current status of customer inventory, all of which stalled global economic recovery. The maritime transport market in Q1 suffered delayed shipping and operational constraints due to the Lunar New Year holiday, factories adjusting shipping schedules, and manpower allocation drivenbymarketdemand.Asaresult, therevenueswere reduced for the entire quarter. As different sectors gradually resumed business in March, there was a slightly increase in the overall operation volume and the operationremainedpositiveinQ1.
According to the latest report from Alphaliner, an oversupply still hold sway in the maritime transport market, withsupplyanddemandgrowingrespectivelyby 8.3% and 1.4%. As the supply of ships are still being impacted by the increasingly stringent international
environmental regulations, the world’s maritime shipping operators comply with such laws by decreasing speed or expediting the replacement of old ships. This will help balance the supply and demand. In addition, with the IMO addressing issues concerning GHG emission goals and carbon reduction in the coming July, the supply of ships in the future could be impacted. Also, according to Alphaliner’s newest data from April 2023,around4.4%oftheworld’scontainerfleetslieinidle, gradually down from the recent peak of 6.4%, indicating signs of recovery in the maritime transport market. The operational performance will be positively benefitted if the global supply chains’ inventory absorption for the second half of the year can continue and the performance in the traditional peak season can be maintained. However, given the uncertainties affecting the global maritime transport market such as geopolitics, regional economy, andinternationalconservationlaws, duecaution andproperresponseareofutmostimportance.
In line with Yang Ming’s global fleet deployment plan and the goal towards net-zero emission, the board meeting approved proceeding subsequent procurement procedures of five LNG dual-fuel container vessels, following the public and transparent international bid evaluationprocess.Withthesenewships,YangMingwill beabletooptimizeitsfleetallocation, enhancethefleet’s overall competition, and operate more sustainably and environmentally-friendly by reducing energy consumptionandcarbonemission.
CEVA Logistics to grow EV Ground fleet to 1,450 by 2025
MUNICH: CEVA Logistics
announced during the 2023 Transport Logistic show in Munich that the company plans to grow its fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) to 1,450 by the end of 2025 as the next stepinitscommitmenttoreachingnetzeroby2050.
Balanced approach to achieve goals
The major sustainability commitment includes 1,000 delivery vans, 300 straight trucks and 150 tractor units deployed across CEVA’s dedicated fleet operations, LTL and last mile pick and delivery operations—as well as for special projects like the recently launched European Clean Transport Network. The expanded EV fleet would reduce the company’s CO2 emissions by an estimated 67,000 tons per year—the equivalent of 30,000 round trips by atruckbetweenParisandMunich.
CEVA is pursuing an “asset right” strategy for its EV fleet. Along with the vehicles of its own employee-driven operating model, CEVA will also enable the transitions to EVs for some of its dedicated subcontractors. In the company’s shared user networks—where trucks are not dedicated to a specific customer—CEVA will sell the certified CO2 savings to customers to further support its EVfleetinvestment.
Building expertise through existing operations
CEVA identified electric battery trucks as the most promising technology to replace fossil fuels and initiated its transition to electric vehicles several years ago. This decision permitted the company to build up its experience operating more than 200 EV vans through its ColisPrivésubsidiaryandmorethan20EVtrucksacrossall continents.
In another example, CEVA has been operating seven JAC iEV1200T electric box trucks in its Ground fleet in Brazil since the end of 2021. The EVs have a range of 200 kilometers per charge and a 3.5-ton load capacity via the 26 cubic meters of cargo space. After one year of use, the trucks covered more than 14,000 kilometers and transportedmorethan150,000packages.TheEVsareexpected
to provide annual savings of 56 tons of CO2 emissions— theequivalenttopreservingmorethan1,600treeseachyear.
CEVAisalsoexpandingitsEVfleetinThailandin2023to support sporting goods retailer Decathlon. The two companies began working together in Thailand since 2021 for nationwide ground distribution. After beginning with only one electric van, the fleet is now three electric vans and two EVO G9 electric straight trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 33,000 pounds. Two more G9 trucksareexpectedtojointhefleetin2023.
Part of Broader Pursuit of “Better Ways”
CEVA is also implementing other initiatives into its Ground operations to further reduce emissions by scaling up the use of biogas and biofuels, testing hydrogen fuel cell and other low-carbon trucks and transitioning eligible fulltruckloadshipmentstoitsrailsolutions.
In its on-going commitment to finding better ways to transport and manage customer shipments, CEVA Logistics announced earlier in 2022 a sustainability commitment for its warehouses—many of which support its Ground operations. CEVA expects to triple the surface area of its solar panels through a joint investment of $180 million by the end of 2025. The company also expects to power all of its warehouses with low-carbon electricity in the same timeframe and to use 100 percent LED lighting in itswarehousesbytheendof2023.
Xavier Bour, global ground leader, CEVA Logistics, said: “An EV fleet of this size is a significant, tangible step in our journey towards a more sustainable future. This major investment is enabled by the expertise of our Ground & Rail teams, as well as the commitment of the CMA CGM Group and of our customers. This decision exemplifies both our relentless focus on finding better ways to transport our customers’ goods and the desire of our CEVA colleagues to reduce emissions across our logistics operations. Change can be difficult sometimes, but innovating and learning are fun and benefit our planet, while also motivating our teams. We believe in the future of EVs,andwe’recommittedtomakingthatfuturehappen.”

First PoC linking up paperless Cargo Release and eBL solutions on GSBN
HONG KONG: Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), an independent not-for-profit technology consortium building a trusted platform designed to redefine global trade, announced the completion of a ground-breaking proof-of-concept with COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, connecting the electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) to the cargo release process seamlessly at QingdaoPortInternationalLtd.
Traditionally, COSCO Shipping SpecializedCarriersortheirshipping agentshadtoprovideacopyoftheBill ofLadingtoQingdaoPort’ssystemas a supporting document for the cargo release process. Until recently, the carrier has joined hands with GSBN and successfully issued the first eBL for bulk cargo through the GSBN platform. Now, the customers can go through an end-to-end digital process over the platform, reducing the average time for cargo discharging from the vessel to leaving the terminalbymorethan24hours.
This is the first time that these two solutions on GSBN have been combined to create a more efficient process. COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers harnessed the structured dataonaneBLissuedviaIQAX,tolink up with the paperless Cargo Release solutionandseamlesslyconnectevery
step involved at Qingdao Port – from customsclearancetoappointmentand release.
GSBN is an independent, not-forprofit technology consortium aiming to redefine global trade with the establishment of a blockchain platform for global trade. As a result, data exchange was simplified between parties and the turnaround time was shortened together with real-time data sharing. It enabled better collaboration between the parties involved with a single source of data via GSBN’s blockchainenabled infrastructure to avoid discrepanciesresultingfrommultiple documentsfromdifferentsources.
Bertrand Chen, CEO at GSBN, said “The latest proof-of-concept demonstrates that the potential benefits of eBL adoption reach far beyondthedigitisationofadocument. By combining multiple digital solutions together – in this case, eBL and Cargo Release on GSBN’s platform – we are able to harness the underlying data to improve existing processes, bring new value-adding applications and expand use cases that help the shipping industry achieveatruedigitalleap.”
Yiyang Hu, Digitalization Team Leader, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, “We are
excitedaboutthepotentialwhicheBL adoption can bring to the industry, as well as collaborating with GSBN and stakeholders like Qingdao Port. Through digitalisation, we can effectivelyintegrateCOSCOShipping Specialized Carriers’ shipping platform with GSBN’s blockchain infrastructure, our customer information system, as well as the ports and shipping companies’ systems along the supply chain, to bring the benefits closer to our customers. This latest proof-ofconcept clearly demonstrates the versatility of GSBN’s platform to enable trusted data exchange resulting in very tangible benefits in improvingtheoverallflow.”
Weiwei Qin, Manager of Marketing Department of SPG Qingdao Qianwan Westport United TerminalCo.,Ltd., said,“ThePortof Qingdao is one of the largest comprehensiveportsintheworldand an important hub for international trade in the West Pacific. This is why wecontinuetoinvestinimprovingthe operational efficiency of our terminals. This collaboration with GSBN and COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers reflects our commitment to continually deliver the best experience to all our users andtosupportglobaltrade.”

Commerce Ministry reviewing existing guidelines of EPCs, FIEO
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The panel is likely to take about two months to complete the exercise andsubmititsrecommendations.

It also issues Certificate of Origin which is required by many countries asproofoforiginofthegoods.

Indian Railways to rationalise Container
Tariff to attract more Cargo
NEW DELHI: With the aim of increasing container movement substantially, Indian Railways is finalising new policy initiatives and rating structure to include more commoditiesinfreightbasket.
The proposed policy envisages changes in the existing one with introduction of new types of goods carriers such as double stack dwarf container, cube container and open top container besides rationalisation ofcontainerrates.
Container tariff is being rationalisedtobringmoreharmonyin the container ecosystem, said a seniorRailwayMinistryofficial.
Indian Railways has an ambitious plan of increasing loading from 4.14 million tonnes (MT) to 6 MT per day. In 2022-23, the railways has achieved 1,512 MT which is 4.14 MT perday.
Now according to the plan, the railways wants to increase the loading to 6 MT per day in order to achieve2,200MTby2025.
Accordingtotherailways, inorder to achieve this, the national transporter has to target freight commodities which are traditionally not coming to the rail system. To achieve this, the railways cannot relyonmineralsandoressuchasiron oreandcoalonly.
As per the National Rail Plan, in the national freight ecosystem nearly 35to40percentisthebalanceofother goods.Thisisroughly2,000MT.
However, the railways barely capture 3 to 4 per cent of this balance. If the railways has to achieve 6 MT per day, it needs to capture at least20percentofthebalanceofother goodsinthenationalecosystem.
Other goods include automobiles, white goods, FMCG, electronics, commercialfoodgrains, agriproducts andengineeringgoodsamongothers.
The existing railway wagons including covered ones are not suited to capturing this traffic. In addition, the railways owned terminals are also notideallysuitedtocapturethistraffic.
Therefore, the railways is relying on containerisation to attract other goods.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the railways has taken many initiatives covering both container operation and its rating to increase container traffic.
However, outofthetotalcontainer traffic of the railways, nearly 70 per cent to 80 per cent is exportimport traffic. A very small percentageisdomestictraffic.
So, the railways is planning to bring in policy initiatives and rating structure that will increase domestic containermovementsubstantially.
Accordingly, a new approach in both policy and rating of container traffic is being worked out in the Railway Board and likely to be announced soon. The idea is to include more commodities in containers with the introduction of more types of containers such as doublestackdwarfandcubeandopen topcontainer.

The new Foreign Trade Policy is a watershed moment for MSMEs
NEW DELHI : The newly launched Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is the most significant one yet. While multiple factors such as the pandemic and geopolitical tensions delayed this policy, the new iteration showcasesthevisionofthegovernment on how exports will take the country to itsnextphaseofgrowth.
This time around, the government has shifted from a five-year policy cycle to a more dynamic setup, one which can be modified based on relevant developments.Stakeholderswillnowbe given their due consideration for any changes as and when required. Further, states and districts will also see wider participation in the consultative process to promote grassroot level exports.
The government has set an ambitious target of reaching $2 trillion in exports by 2030. MSMEs will be at the forefront of this and consequently are the largest beneficiaries of this new FTP. License fees which used to be one of the largest burdens for exports have been reduced significantly. While previously the FTP used to be incentive based, thistimearoundithasbeendone with the intent of benefitting the entire ecosystem and bringing Indian productsintotheglobalvaluechain.
This FTP is also banking heavily on technology where different departments of the government will now be interconnected to generate data that can be leveraged to improve the policy, draft trade agreements between other countries and benefit citizens and our economy. Under the FTP 2023, MSMEs will receive various incentives and support to enhance their exports. One of the key benefits is the reduction of compliance costs for exporters. The policy will simplify the export procedures and reduce the time taken
for clearance, which will help MSMEs save costs and improve their competitiveness. The policy will aid in empoweringMSMEsbyprovidingthem withalevelplayingfieldtocompetewith larger players in the global market. Under the new FTP MSMEs will also have access to the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) scheme for small exporters launched in 2022, which will provide credit insurancetoexportersandenablethem toaccesscreditatlowerrates.
The policy also includes a separate chapter on promoting cross-border trade in the digital economy through ecommerce exports. The policy aims to promote e-commerce exports by providing MSMEs with access to international e-commerce platforms. This will enable them to reach out to a global audience and sell their products directly to customers in foreign markets.
The government will also provide support for MSMEs to set up their ecommerce platforms and enhance their digital capabilities. The setting up of dedicated e-commerce hubs will simplify storage, customs clearance, returns processing, labelling, testing, andrepackaging.
The proposal to operationalise post offices throughout the country to facilitate ecommerce exports fulfilment will aid MSMEs in simplifying logistics. The government will set up technology centers and incubators to help MSMEs upgrade their skills and adopt modern technologies. The policy also aims to promote research and development in MSMEs by providing them with funding and support. But there needs to be special outreach to spread awareness, initial handholding, and capacity building initiatives to promote ecommerce exports among seller community.
While the FTP 2023 is a visionary policy, a concrete roadmap is required to achieve its objectives, particularly with regard to logistics, payment reconciliation and compliance, which are pain points for smaller sellers. Developing long-term capabilities is paramount, and pre-existing examples of e-commerce exports can be referred to for this. Proper implementation and enablement can help MSMEs play a significant role in driving India’s exports and economic growth in the years to come. The FTP 2023 is expectedtohaveasignificantimpacton the MSME sector, whichis set to benefit from several measures aimed at promoting exports. Reduction in fees, inclusion of duty credit scrips, duty exemptions and remission schemes are some of the key provisions under the policy. These provisions are beneficial to the MSME sector as it will make it easier and affordable for them to engage and operate in the international markets. FTP 2023 aims to promote ease of doing business and encourage state and district-level players to increase their export operations. The Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras, post offices designated to facilitate exports by MSMEs, have been operationalized to work in tandem with Foreign Post Offices under FTP 2023 This will facilitate the MSME sector to access and leverage the postal networks to delivertheirproductsglobally.
In conclusion, the FTP 2023 is a step in the right direction for empowering MSMEs, particularly those engaged in e-commerce exports. The policy will provide them with the necessary support and incentives to compete effectivelyintheglobalmarket.

APM Terminals pledges EUR962 million investment in Brazilian Terminals by 2026
THE HAGUE: As part of a Dutch trade delegation to Brazil this week, APM Terminals’ CEO Keith Svendsen pledged a EUR962 million ($5.2billion)investmentinitsBrazilianoperationsupto2026.
This figure includes a EUR296 million ($ 1.6 billion) of a total EUR 483 (R$ 2.6 billion) investment exclusively for the Phase One development of a new terminal in Suape. Theterminal, locatedinEstaleiroAtlânticoSul,isinthefinal stages of acquisition and will rejuvenate infrastructure and increasecompetitionintheport.
APM Terminals has committed an additional EUR666 ($ 3.6 billion) of investment to the company’s four other terminals and inland depots, by 2026. A large share of this, around EUR285 million, is allocated to Brasil Terminal Portuário,Santos.
The company, which plans to multiply storage capacity fivefold at its inland container depots in the Northeast and Southeastofthecountry, willprioritiseearlyrenovationofits terminal in the Port of Santos, Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP). BTP is operated in partnership with Terminal InvestmentLimited(TIL),asubsidiaryoftheMSCgroup).
Concession Extension
APM Terminals is negotiating with the federal government to extend its concession agreement, which expires in 2027, for another 20 years. In exchange, APM Terminals would modernise and double the current
1.5 million TEU capacity of the terminal, which is currently operatingatclosetofullcapacity(92%).
An initial investment of at least EUR285 million ($ 1.54 billion) up to 2026, could realistically reach EUR408 million (R$ 2.2 billion) over the next five years due to ongoing improvements. As well as expanding BTP, APM Terminals and TIL expressed joint interest in a new container terminal atthePortofSantos,STS10,locatedinanareaadjacenttoits existingterminal.Thenewgovernment, however, hasnotyet defined the future of the project, which has been put on hold forreassessment.
Under the previous government, the tender was subject to controversy, as other port operators expressed concern over the dominance of Maersk and MSC, the parent companies of APM Terminals and TIL respectively. Responding to this, APM Terminals’ CEO Keith Svendsen said that experience in other countries shows that the concernisunfounded.
Doubling Capacity
With BTP operating at 92% capacity – and an 80% capacity generally seen as the maximum for optimal efficiency,Svendsenstated:“Ourprimaryfocusisincreasing capacityandmodernisation.Thereisnowanurgentneedfor investment in the Port of Santos, both to ensure the deepening of the access channel – which will allow the entry of new, larger, and more efficient ships – and to expand capacityoftheportcomplex, whichisclosetothelimit.”

“We are living in uncertain times, where our customers arefacingdifferentchallengesintheirtransportationneeds. Our role as a logistics provider is to manage these uncertainties and complexities and help our customers to maximize their performance, resilience, and sustainability in logistics. Our logistics and digital expertise are bundled in myDHLi and help over 16,000 customers navigate also through uncertain times,” says Tim Scharwath, CEO DHL Global Forwarding, Freight.
myDHLi boosting performance and productivity
The developer team consequently incorporates user feedback and explores ways to boost the performance and productivity of customers even further. Designed as a one-stop-shop solution, myDHLi meets the customer’s
transport and logistics needs on a single digital platform. The central Follow+Share functionality simplifies alignment processes and avoids time-consuming communicationsflowsonthesidelines. Therefore, shipment notifications are now not only configurable, but also can be received as a daily digest. This feature provides a summary of individually selectable events that are most important to the user – such as shipment or customs status and irregularities. In addition, the new myDHLi book service allows customers with contracted rates to directly submit a booking via the myDHLi portal. Without additional emails, phone calls or API integrations, a booking can be completed in six simple steps. Booking a shipment goes hand in hand with the corresponding documents. For this reason, the functionalities of myDHLi Documents were expanded. Documents can now not only be attached to a booking, but also uploaded at any time via the recently launched upload feature.Thisensuresthatdocumentsarealwaysattachedto the correct shipment and can be found easily and quickly. To further improve performance, the popular myDHLi Reports service has also been enhanced. Originally only containing operational data, it was expanded in 2022 to include Green data that allows to review the sustainability performance. From now on, invoice level data completes myDHLi Reports and financial data can be seamlessly combined with operational and sustainability data in fully customizable, schedulable and sharable reports. This opens up a whole new dimension of reporting against performance indicatorsatoperational, financialandsustainabilitylevels.
