Evergreen to enhance Reefer injection of 1,000 Star Cool Units from Maersk Container Industry

TAIPEI: Evergreen Marine Corp. has decided to enhance its latest reefer injection of 1,000 Star Cool Units from Maersk Container Industry (MCI) with a monitoring tool, after a successful year-long connectivity trial of the Sekstant reefer monitoring solution.

“By equipping Star Cool reefers with the Sekstant monitoring solution, we are able to offer our customers even more control over their equipment. We are proud to partner with Evergreen and look forward to continuing to innovate and improve our operations together,” stated Anders Holm, Director of Global Sales & Service at MCI.

Evergreen first ordered Star Cool reefers from MCI in 2020 and has since continued expanding the Star Cool fleet.

“Energy efficiency is achieved by a proven combination of frequency converter technology and a robust variable speed reciprocating compressor, resulting in optimal control of motor speed based on cooling demand and required air circulation, ensuring an ideal cargo environment while saving energy,” said MCI in a statement.

MCI notes there are several benefits to connecting the

reefers to the internet, such as remote documentation of the actual carbon footprint on both trip and fleet-wide levels, tracking of the location and condition of each reefer, performance monitoring and optimisation.

Supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis are key challenges of World : S Jaishankar

VARANASI: The prospects of a globaleconomicrecoveryremaindim amid supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis and pressures on energy, food and fertiliser security, External Affairs Minister Shri S Jaishankar said recently, callingforaunitedglobalapproachto dealwiththechallenges.

In an address at the G20 Development Ministers’ Conclave here, he also said that India has put forward an ambitious seven-year action plan for accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development

Goals (SDGs) that presented an integrated and inclusive roadmap for G20actions.

The roadmap focuses on digital public infrastructure and fostering data for development, investing in women-led development and energy transitiontoprotecttheplanet.

“The world today faces unprecedentedandmultiplecrises— fromthepandemicstothedisruptions in supply chains, from the impact of conflict to climate events, our era is becomingmorevolatileanduncertain bytheday,”SJaishankarsaid.

“Added to this is the stubborn inflation, rising interest rates and shrinkingfiscalspaceformanynations. As always in such times, the weak and vulnerablebearthebrunt,”hesaid.

The external affairs minister said progress towards the SDGs was already falling short before the COVID-19 pandemic and that it has furtherbeenexacerbated.

“Prospects of a global economic recovery remain dim amid supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis and pressures on energy, food andfertilisersecurity,”hesaid.

E-commerce : Warehousing demand declines by 71%

NEW DELHI: The E-commerce sector’sdemandforwarehousingand logisticsdeclinedby71%to3.4million sqftinFY23.E-commercecompanies had picked 11.6 million sq ft warehousing space in FY22 to deal with a surge in demand during the covidpandemic.

Property consultancy Knight Frank India said in its India Warehousing Report 2023 that this decline in demand from e-commerce was more than made by third-party logistics (3PL) companies, manufacturingandretail.

The demand from 3PL companies roseby34%inFY23to20.2millionsqft andaccountedforanall-timeshareof 39% of the warehousing and logistics space. The bulk of the space taken up inMumbaifollowedbyNCR,aKnight Frank report said. The consultancy said the e-commerce companies would take another nine to 15 months toutilizetheexcesscapacity.

The demand from 3PL companies indicated an increasing focus on outsourcing logistics to warehousing operatorsastheindustrywaslooking for flexibility and scalability with optionsofscalingupordownsisingas per market demand, said Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing DirectorofKnightFrankIndia.

Growth was not limited to the top eight markets but has extended to secondary markets, supported by enhanced infrastructure and expansion of e-commerce and driven by the hub and spoke logistics model, Baijalsaid.

Thisisjustthetipoftheicebergas the growth of the warehousing industry had just started and there was potential for warehousing space REIT in the country, Baijal said. He forecasted a robust demand in FY24withstrongdemandmomentum continuing.

The overall warehousing demand surpassed the previous peak in FY23 toreach51.3millionsqft,whichwasa 0.1% year-on-year increase. The demand for warehousing and logistics has grown beyond the top eight cities (Mumbai, NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai,AhmedabadandKolkata).

In keeping with these trends, KnightFrankhadexpandedcoverage to 13 secondary markets, which accounted for around 13.75 million sq ft of warehousing transactions and grewby15%year-on-year.

Lucknow, Guwahati, Coimbatore, Vishakhapatnam, Indore, Jaipur, Vadodara, Surat, Vapi, Patna, Ludhiana, Ambala-Rajapura and

Bhubaneshwar were emerging as significantwarehousingmarketswith demandforwarehousingandlogistics space being driven by 3PL, manufacturingandretail.

Theshareofsecondarymarketsin the total transactions recorded in the country has grown from just 11% in FY19to21%inFY2023.

According to Knight Frank’s research warehousing rents across seven of the eight primary markets grew in the range of 3-8% y-o-y in FY23. An estimated 13% of the volume transacted during FY 2023 was for industrial use and was expected to gain further traction thisyear.

Supply of space remained subdued due to inflationary trends in steel and cement. Strong transaction volumes combined with comparatively lower supply in FY23 had brought down the vacancy level to 12.2% during the year. Vacancy levels in the major markets of Mumbai, NCR, Bengaluru and Pune have dropped significantly compared with the previous year.

The eight primary markets of India held an estimated 412 million sq ft of warehousing stock at the endofFY23.

Nitin Gadkari lays foundation stone of NH projects worth more than Rs 8000 crore in Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari laid Foundation stone for5NHprojectsworthRs2,200crore in Pratapgarh region and 5 NH projects worth Rs 6,215 Crore in Deoria Region of Uttar Pradesh in presence of Chief Minister of Uttar PradeshShriYogiAdityanath.

Shri Gadkari said with the widening of 43 km of National Highway 330 from Pratapgarh to Sultanpur being constructed at a cost of Rs 1290 crore, the travel time from Prayagraj to Pratapgarh via Ayodhya will be reduced. He said the work of construction of proposed 14 km bypass in Pratapgarh at a cost of Rs 309 crore will also start soon. The Minister said road safety work

will be done on National Highway 31 at a cost of Rs27croreforstreetlights, bussheltersamongothers. The construction of Pratapgarh-Musafirkhana section will accelerate the development of cement plant, gas plant, bottling plantanddairymilkfactory industries. All these projects will encourage investment in Uttar Pradesh and create new employmentopportunities.

SpeakingabouttheDeoriaproject Shri Gadkari said construction of 22 km, 4-lane bypass at a cost of 1750 crores in Deoria will be awarded in August, 2023.He said the backward areas of Deoria and Gorakhpur will

get benefit from these projects. TheMinistersaidconnectivitywithBihar willalsoimprovewiththeseprojects.

PLI Schemes transform India’s Exports basket from traditional commodities to high value-added products

NEW DELHI: The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes have led to a significant increase in production, employment generation, economic growth and exports in the country. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, DPIIT said that due to PLI Schemes, there was a significant increase of 76% in FDI in the Manufacturing sector in FY 2021-22 (USD 21.34 billion) compared to previous FY 2020-21 (USD12.09billion).

ThePLIschemesasenvisionedby the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi with the objective of making India 'AatmaNirbhar' is built on the foundation of 14 sectors with an incentive outlay of Rs. 1.97 lakh crore (about US$ 26 billion) to strengthen their production capabilities and help createglobalchampions.

Sectors for which PLI schemes exist and have seen an increase in FDI inflows from FY 2021-22 to FY 2022-23 are Drugs and Pharmaceuticals (+46%), Food Processing Industries (+26%) and Medical Appliances (+91%). PLI Schemes have transformed India’s exports basket from traditionalcommoditiestohighvalueadded products such as electronics & telecommunication goods, processed foodproductsetc.

As on date, 733 applications have been approved in 14 Sectors with expected investment of Rs.3.65 Lakh Crore. 176 MSMEs are among the

PLI beneficiaries in sectors such as Bulk Drugs, Medical Devices, Pharma,Telecom,WhiteGoods,Food Processing,Textiles&Drones.

Actual investment of Rs. 62,500 Crore has been realized till March 2023 which has resulted in incremental production/ sales over Rs. 6.75 Lakh Crore and employment generation of around 3,25,000. Exports boosted by Rs 2.56 Lakh CroretillFY2022-23.

Incentive amount of around Rs. 2,900 Crore disbursed in FY 2022-23 under PLI Schemes for 8Sectorsviz.Large-ScaleElectronics Manufacturing (LSEM), IT Hardware, Bulk Drugs, Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals, Telecom & Networking Products, Food Processing and Drones & Drone Components.

PLI Scheme has led to major smartphone companies shifting its suppliers to India, e.g., Foxconn, WistronandPegatron.Asaresult,top high-end phones are being manufactured in India. It has also resulted in a 20-fold increase in women employment and localization in IT Hardware such as Battery & Laptops. Secretary, DPIIT said that the value addition in mobile manufacturing in India is to the tune of20%.“Wehavebeenabletoincrease the value addition in mobile manufacturing to 20% within a period of 3 years whereas countries like Vietnam achieved 18% value addition over15yearsandChinaachieved49% value addition in over 25 years.

Seen in this perspective, it is a big achievement”, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singhadded.

PLI Scheme for LSEM along with existing Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP) has led to increased value addition in the electronics sector and in smartphone manufacturing, 23% and 20% respectively, from negligible in 2014-15. Of the USD 101 Billion total electronics production in FY 2022-23, smartphones constitute USD 44 Billion including USD11.1Billionasexports.

Import substitution of 60% has been achieved in the Telecom sector and India has become almost self–reliant in Antennae, GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) & CPE (Customer Premises Equipment). Drones sector has seen a 7 times jump in turnover due to the PLI Scheme which consists of all MSMEStartups.

Under the PLI Scheme for Food Processing,sourcingofrawmaterials from India has seen significant increase which has positively impacted income of Indian farmers andMSMEs.

Due to the PLI Scheme, there has been a significant reduction in imports of raw materials in the Pharma sector. Unique intermediate materials and bulk drugs are being manufactured in India including Penicillin-G, and transfer of technology has happened in manufacturing of Medical Devices suchas(CTscan,MRIetc.).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Monday wherein he directed the officials to ensuresafeevacuationofpeoplefrom vulnerablelocationstosafeareas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said extremely severe cyclonic storm (ESCS) ‘Biparjoy’ lay at 5.30 pm at about 310 kilometres south west of Porbandar and 330 kilometres south west of Devbhumi Dwarka. It lay 400 kilometres south south west of Jakhau Port, 410 kilometres south south west of Naliya. It is expected to cross near Jakhau port in Gujarat by evening of June 15 as very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS). The ports have been instructed by IMD for hoistingSignalNo.10whichisagreat dangerwarningsignal.

UnionMinisterforPorts,Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on Monday chaired a highlevel meeting with the senior officials of the Port Authority to review the preparedness for cyclone ‘Biparjoy’. Hedirectedtheseniorofficerstotake every possible measure to ensure that people living in vulnerable locationsaresafe,ANIreported.

Deendayal Port, (DPA Kandla Port),India’sNo.1MajorPortincargo handling, has asked vessel operators toevacuateberthsimmediately.

TheAdaniGroup’sportsbusiness, AdaniPorts,saidinanexchangefiling that it suspended its vessel operations on Monday at Mundra, India’s biggest commercial port that has the country’s largest coal import terminal, and also at Tuna port near Kandla.

“All ships anchored are advised to take all necessary steps for their safety, which include steaming out to high seas,” said Adani Ports, adding, “Weather forecasts for Cyclone Biparjoy predict strong winds, rain andsquallsinGulfofKutch.”

Other nearby ports like APM Terminals Pipavav and Adani Hazira Port have also issued similar suspension alerts, as the storm is expected to cause landfall in the region by Thursday, according to currentindications.

“Longandpersistentswellsdueto Cyclone Biparjoy render difficulty in marine, quay-side and land-side operations,” APM Terminals Pipavav saidinatradeadvisory.

The terminal went on to explain, “With the cyclonic storm closing in overthenext36-48hours,theweather is only expected to worsen. Pipavav

port will suspend all it’s Quay side operations. We will continue to monitorthesituation&goforareview on/around13thJuneoncethecyclone isclear.Weshallkeepyouallinformed reg the resumption of quay side operation“

Nhava Sheva (JNPT) is also anticipating extreme weather conditions because of the cyclonic storm. “Due to strong and gusting winds, the movement of container vessels will be restricted,” the port authoritysaid.

It added, “Except container vessels, other vessel movements will continue with pilot boarding by tug boatsuntilweatherpermits.”

Container lines offering regular calls into India’s western coast have also begun to warn customers of cargo delays and supply chain disruptionsduetoportstoppages.

“As a precautionary measure and considering the cyclone landfall in Gujarat this week, there is a restriction in allowing third party surveyors to go to stack and check containers at Mundra,” Maersk said inanadvisory.

Mundra Port was already battling a large buildup of containers as a result of diversions from APMTerminals’PipavavPort.

The cyclone-related disruption comes amid ongoing cargo delays in theregionasaconsequenceofrecent disruptions due to Power failure at PipavavPort.

Moving from ‘Make in India’ to ‘Made in India’ : Mr. Rizwan Soomar

MUMBAI: It is heartening to note that India’s cumulative services and merchandise exports are expected to cross $760 billion this year. It will be to the significant credit of the Government’s integrated efforts to incentivise domestic manufacturing, build capacity for small and medium businesses and create the logistics infrastructurerequiredtoenhanceconnectivity.Asthe Government gears up to actualize its $2 trillion export target for 2030, the new Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) aptly encompasses a futuristic and transformative ecosystem that will propel export volumes of domestic goodsfromthecountrytotheworldeffectively. Reducing friction, improving efficiency

ForeignTradePolicy2023capturesabroadrangeof trade facilitation measures that will benefit the entire export ecosystem. Procedural reforms that integrate technology to simplify compliances are being implemented by the Government across sectors in the foreign policy, including logistics and infrastructure, through platforms like Gati Shakti National Master Plan Portal and Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP). Additionally, the push for creating seamless, unified, rule-based IT systems to accelerate clearances under the automatic route will facilitate automaticapprovalsforvariouspermissions.

Introduction of online approvals for multiple processes under the FTP, including e-Certificate of Origin and issuance of Electronic-Importer Exporter Code,willnotonlystreamlinethecompliancechainbut will also reduce the processing time for authorizations. To add to that, the extension of the export obligation period will contribute significantly to the ease of doing business in the country and greatly simplify the compliance ecosystem. Such enabling measures will naturally harmonise the integration of Indian businesses and MSMEs in domestic and global valuechains.

India has signed several key Foreign Trade Agreements (FTAs) over the past couple of years, and some more are in the offing. Combining competitive trade agreements with the establishment of a robust network of export promotion institutions all the way down to the district level is a welcome development that will help India-made products reach international markets.

The decentralized approach suggested in the policy focuses on providing global platforms to products and services at the domestic district level. This, together with the establishment of a District Export Promotion Committee to design and implement district-specific ‘export action plans’, will provide critical touch points for local businesses who are looking at exports as the panaceaforbusinessgrowth.

Merchanting Trade

The introduction of merchanting trade –themovementofgoodsbyseafromoneforeigncountry to another with the help of India based intermediaries but without berthing at ports in India – in the policy, and its eligibility for certain remission schemes, is yet another strategic move to provide fillip to and

strengthen India’s establishment as a global trade hub, with linkages to maintain market continuityincaseof domestic supply shortages. It will also allow entrepreneurs and businesses in India to use locations like GIFT city in Gandhinagar as major merchanting hubs and help India emerge as a preferred merchanting trade hub in South Asia in the medium-to-long term, comparable to Dubai,Singapore,andHongKong.

Recognition of eCommerce Exports

The inclusion of provisions for cross-border trade of goods and services from India and the promotion of ecommerce will create a host of opportunities for small businesses looking to sell in global markets. The policy extends all the benefits that were earlier limited to conventionalofflineexports,toe-commerceexportstoo. The establishment of e-commerce export hubs (ECEHs), as proposed in the policy, will stand to benefit fromindustryparticipationfrommajore-commerceand logistics players, with the active involvement of the CentralorStateGovernments.

These developments, together with the sharpened focus in the policy on sustainability, compliance, and ease of doing business, will give a significant boost to India’sexports.

Rupee Trade and Amnesty Scheme

Additionally, FTP commendably concretizes the Government’s vision of establishing the rupee as a medium of exchange in cross-border trade through provisions enabling export incentives and obligations to be realized in the rupee. Such provisions will prompt India’seconomicdevelopmentasitwillprimarilylower transaction costs and increase price transparency, further allowing exporters, opting for local currency settlement, to be at par with those choosing US Dollar as the preferred currency of trade. It will also catalyse the integration of small businesses in global value chainsandfurtherExport-ImportfromIndia.

Separately, the special one-time Amnesty Scheme is a pragmatic step towards closing authorization of exporters, who have been unable to meet their export obligations under the Export Promotion Credit Guarantee(EPCG)andAdvanceAuthorisations.

Ultimately, as India continues to witness strong export growth amidst global headwinds, FTP 2023 in conjunction with the National Logistics Policy announced last year, will be transformational in not only sustaining the current growth momentum but also in establishing an export oriented robust regulatory framework to help India exceed its export targets.
