The Evolution of Recreational and Amateur Cycling

Cycling as a means of exercise has grown leap folds. Post covid, people wish to be healthy by taking

up cycling. Cycling is an ecologically sustainable means of transportation. If cycling is promoted in both, the hybrid and on-ground model, acts and behaviour contributing to societal good can be recorded and rewarded with the intent to bring societalchange.

ReCycle is an on-ground cycling event slated for 5th March, 2023 along with a digital engagement which will be launched two weeks prior. The on-ground event will have three categories comprising 25 kms, 15 kms and 10 kms. The digital event, will enable people to login their cycling miles which will be automated through the event app. The participants will be rewarded with ‘Karma Points’ fordoinggooddeeds.

The on-ground event will be a celebration of the people’s achievements of ‘Good Karma' and will also have an athletic component to go with it, with participants having to cycle distances of 25 kms, 15 kms and 10 kms. Participation in the digital format canbefromanywhereintheworld.

HMM’s annual profits crosses US$7 billion

SEOUL: South Korean container shipping company

HMM saw its revenue rose 34.7% toUS$14.57billionin2022,whileitsoperating profitincreasedby34.8%toUS$7.8billion.

Thenetprofitoftheoceancarriercameto US$7.89billion,upfromUS$4.18billionayear earlier with the operating margin reaching 53.5%, remaining at the same level as lastyear.

“The freight rates in most key trade lanes have been under downward pressure since the first half of 2022, led by a slowdown in demand and the ease of supply chain strain,” commented HMM, adding that, “Unfavorable market conditionsareexpectedtocontinueduetowidespread inflationandweakeconomicgrowth,puttingpressure ondemand.”

HMM said it will stay on course to enhance its business capability in line with the mid to long-term strategy unveiled in July 2022 and will seek to secure high-yield cargoes, promote cost control and improve operationalefficiency.

Schedule reliability continues on its upwards trend : Sea-Intelligence

COPENHAGEN: The rapid increase in schedule reliabilitythatwehavebeenseeinginthesecondhalfofthe year has abated somewhat, with the M/M increase in December of a marginal 0.1 percentage points to 56.6%. On a Y/Y level, however, schedule reliability was up by 24.8 percentage points. The average delay for LATE vessel arrivals had been dropping consistently since the turn of the year. In December 2022 however, average delay increasedslightly,by0.34daysM/Mandreached5.43days.

MSC was the most reliable top-14 carrier in December with 63.3%, followed by Maersk with 60.1%. The next 10carriersrecordedschedulereliabilitybetween50%-60%, with only Yang Ming and ZIM recording schedule reliability of under 50%, at 47.7% and 47.2%, respectively. 10 of the top-14 carriers recorded a M/M improvement in schedulereliabilityinDecember2022,whileMSCrecorded no change, and 3 carriers recorded a decline. Yang Ming recorded the largest increase of 5.3 percentage points, while ZIM recorded the largest M/M decline of -6.1 percentage points. All carriers recorded double-digit Y/Yimprovementsthough.

Kerala Govt to give Rs 400 Cr to Adani Ports as part of Vizhinjam agreement

KOCHI : As part of the agreement between the Kerala Government and Adani Ports, the former will now have to give Rs 400 crore to the latter as the construction of the breakwater at the upcomingVizhinjamPortisgoingforward.

According to the agreement between the two, Kerala will have to provide Adani Ports Rs 400 crore when 30 per cent of the breakwater is completed and they have beenknockingonthedoorsofthegovernmentforawhile.

The state government has been caught in a debt trap and the financial position has been in tatters and hence they are unable to honour the commitment to the port builder. With time running out, the Pinarayi Vijayan government has now decided to take a loan of Rs 400 crore fromHUDCO.

The Vizhinjam Port has been a dream project of

successive governments and was finally cleared by the then Oommen Chandy government (2011-16) and AdaniPortswasthelonebidderfortheproject.

TheworkbeganonDecember5,2015.

Mr. Gautam Adani had then announced that the first ship will berth there on September 1, 2018, in a record time of less than 1,000 days, but due to various reasons things went haywire. State Ports Minister Shri Ahamed Devarkovil has now said that the first ship will berth in March 2023 and the first phase of the port will be commissionedin2023.Theprojectfirststalledin2017after cyclone Ockhi hit the construction site and a portion of the constructed breakwater was washed away and since then the shortage of limestone, the most important raw materialfortheproject,causedanotherdelay.

The total cost of the port project is Rs 7,525 crore and thestategovernmenthascontributed500acresofland.

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) completes 37 years of its journey

NEW DELHI: The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which was established in 1986 and works under the Ministry of Commerce and Trade, has achieved phenomenal success in the promotion of export of agricultural products in its successful journeyof37years.

StartedwithamerelyUSD0.6billion export in 1987-88, the APEDA’s active intervention took the export of agricultural products to a new height of USD 19.69 billion till April-December 2022-23andexpandedtheexportbasket to over 200 countries. In 2021-22, the APEDA exported agricultural products worthUSD24.77billion.

The target given to APEDA in the current financial year (2022-23) is USD 23.56 billion, out of which 84% i.e. USD 19.69 billion has been achieved till December 2022, and the remaining target is expected to be completed withinthestipulatedtimeperiod.

According to the WTO Trade Data, India was ranked at 25th in 1986, which slippedfurtherto28thin1987andat29th position in 1988. However, the ranking of

India improved significantly as the county’s position moved to 10th rank in 2019 which improved further to 9th positionin2020andat8thrankin2021.

APEDA’s intervention led to setting up and upgrading the infrastructure of the country for agri exports and augmentingqualityofagriexports.

A Market Intelligence Cell has been constitutedinAPEDAandtheactivityof dissemination of E-market intelligence reports comprising detailed market analysishascommenced.

A Farmer Connect Portal has also beensetupbyAPEDAonitswebsitefor providing a platform for FPOs/FPCs, Cooperativestointeractwithexporters.

Working in tandem with the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, APEDA has taken a giant leap in making landlocked Purvanchal a new destination of agri export activities by developing Varanasi Agri – Export Hub (VAEH) in a record time.TheVaranasiregion,wherealmost NIL export activities were happening duetolackofbasicinfrastructure,isnow abuzz with agri export activities. After the intervention of APEDA, Varanasi region has recorded exemplary changes

in the export scenario and registered manyfirst-of-its-kindachievementsina very short span of time from Purvanchal region. The agri exports from Himalayan belt, J&K to Ladakh was an achievement in development of region with regard to agri exports. The landlocked states such as North Eastern Region, Uttar Pradesh, Uttranchal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh spurred in agri exports when their products were sourced from farmers and displayed in the retail chains of importingcountries.

Non-Basmati Rice has emerged as India’stopexportitemamongthemany agriculturalandprocessedfoodproduct exportsunderAPEDAbasket.

As a part of the Indian Millets promotion on web, APEDA has designed, developed and launched the Millets Portal. It has also created a separate portal Indian Millet Exchange topromotemillets.

U.S. explores working with India to increase economic competition against China : US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo

NEW DELHI: Commerce Secretary

Gina Raimondo recently said that the U.S. is considering collaborating with India on certain manufacturing jobs in order to boost competition against China.

Raimondo said ” that she will visit India in March with a handful of U.S. CEOs to discuss an alliance between the two nations on manufacturing semiconductor chips. The Commerce Secretary also revisited some of President Joe Biden’s comments on AmericanmanufacturingfromhisState oftheUnionaddressonTuesday.

“We stopped making things,” Raimondo said. “I think, in 1990, there were like 350,000 people working in the chip industry in America. Now it’s like 160,000.”

Biden’s CHIPS and Science Act, signed into law in August, supplied $52 billion for U.S. companies to invest in chip manufacturing.

The U.S. semiconductor industry employed more than 277,000 workers in 2021, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association, but it made 0% of theworld’ssupplyofsemiconductorsas ofSeptember2022.

In comparison, Taiwan and South Korea comprise 80% of the global foundry market for chips. TSMC, the world’s most advanced chipmaker, is also headquartered in Taiwan. But a collaborative effort between the U.S. and the Indo-Pacific “quad” region could lessen the global reliance on Taiwanese semiconductors.

In September 2021, India, Japan and Australia announced plans to establish a semiconductor supply chain initiative tosecureaccesstosemiconductorsand theircomponents.

Raimondo said that India is “makingalotoftherightmoves.”

“It’s a large population. (A) lot of workers, skilled workers,

Englishspeakers,ademocraticcountry ruleoflaw,”shesaid.

But the Commerce Secretary said thesoutheastAsiannationmustcomply withlaborstandardsaspartofanydeal, especially in light of India’s consumption of Russian oil. The G-7 countries, Australia and the EuropeanUnionhaveissuedpricecaps on the cost of Russian oil products to restrict the Kremlin’s access to a potential funding source for its war on Ukraine while still maintaining an oil supplyontheglobalmarket.

“I’m running the Indo-Pacific economic framework,” Raimondo said. “So we have 13 countries including India. And we’re saying to them, look, sign up at the government-togovernment level to labor standards, environmental standards, anticorruption standards, rule of law standards. And in return, it’ll unlock U.S.business,U.S.capitaljobsinIndia.”

Govt of India considers vessels directly to Japan for saving time & cost

NEW DELHI: As higher freight cost is a major challenge for apparel exporters, the Government is considering the vessels directly to Japansothattimeandcostgetreduced drastically.

Sharing this, Narendra Goenka, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) believes that India’s apparel exports to Japan is expected to grow by 20 per cent –25 per cent year-on-year. Rising opportunities due to changing

geopolitical landscape, government supportive schemes like PLI, Mega Park scheme, improving on the quality standard, getting sustainable and utilising benefits of FTAs with major markets are the key growth drivers.

He said that, “We have a strong businessopportunityinJapanreflected by the fact that China, which has been a dominant garment supplier to Japan, has witnessed a decline in the past five years giving significant advantage to

India. The garment industry in both the countries have geared up to increase this trade taking advantage of duty-free accessforIndianRMGpostIndo-Japan CEPA agreement as against an approximate 9 per cent duty for China andTurkey.”

He also added that at a time when apparel exports are in a tight spot, it is important that industry starts innovating in design, promotions, compliance and supply chain efficiencies.

High Level Committee Chaired by DPA Chairman to draft revised Guidelines for Coastal Shipping

NEW DELHI: Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, under its Sagarmala Programme, has pushed a number of reforms and initiatives in the maritime industry to strengthen the country's socioeconomic and regulatory environment. One of the key initiatives of the Ministry is to promote and develop RoRo (Roll-on, Roll-off) ferry transportation ecosystem which when compared to traditional modes of transportation, offers a number of advantages, such as shorter trip distances, lower logistics cost and less pollution.

Under the ambit of Sagarmala, Ministry has operationalized Ro-Pax Ferry service between Ghogha –Hazira in Gujarat and Mumbai – Mandwa in Maharashtra. These services have transported more than 24.15 lakh passengers and 4.58 lakh cars and 36.3 thousand trucks, contributing towards clean environmentandpublicwelfare.

In order to standardize and streamline the development and operation of the services, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways had prepared and circulated ‘Draft Guidelines for operationalization of Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax ferry service along the coast of India’ inJune2022forstakeholderconsultation.

In view of suggestions received from public and private stakeholders and with a vision to set up worldclass infrastructure and services all along the coastline, Ministry has now constituted a High Level Committee under the Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority for drafting revised Guidelines for operationalization of RoRo and Ro-Pax ferry service. The Committee would simultaneously draft Model Concession Agreement for Ro-Ro / Ro-Pax Terminal Operator and Model License Agreement for Operation of Ro-Ro/ Ro-Pax/ Fast PassengerFerry.

The Committee shall delve into the ground realities such as safety standards of vessels, control mechanism

on excess boarding of passengers/cargo, online ticketing system, revenue accounting/ sharing mechanism, statutory clearances, exclusivity periods, inclusion of new & emerging technologies to prepare structured document which will eliminate unnecessary delays, disagreements facilitate the smooth and safe operation of the Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax ferry service. These would also enhance the ease of doing business by instilling confidence among all stakeholders attracting more domestic and international businesses to invest and do businessinthecountry.

In the Union Budget 2023-24, it was proposed that Coastal shipping will be promoted as the energy efficient and lower cost mode of transport, both for passengers and freight, through PPP mode with viability gap funding whichisinlinewithcountry’sfocusonGreenGrowth.

While underlining the importance of this step the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said “The proposed committee will formulate and streamline the future Roadmap of Ro-Pax Ferry development in the Country and implement the vision of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji, of harnessing the waterways and integrating them with the economicdevelopmentofthecountry”.

Under the Sagarmala programme, the Ministry is financially supporting 51 projects worth ~Rs. 1,900 Croretoboosttheurbanwatertransportationservicesin India, of which, 10 projects worth ~Rs. 500 Crore have alreadybeencompleted.

Trade between India-Israel has increased to about $7.5 billion, rise will continue: Envoy

NEW DELHI: Trade between India and Israel has increased from $5 billion before the COVID pandemic to about $7.5 billion now, Israeli envoy Naor Gilon said recently,termingit“veryencouraging”forbothnations.

The Ambassador of Israel to India said a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries, negotiations for which have been going on for over a decade, got a push after the visit of External Affairs MinisterS.Jaishankartohiscountryin2021.

“However, I believe that even without an FTA, our tradeisdoingwonders.Since,beforetheCovidpandemic to last year, we increased our trade by 50% from $5 billion to about $7.5 billion, which is very encouraging, and I believe this trend in increasing trade will continue,” Mr.Gilon.

Asked if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit India, he said given the busy schedules of Netanyahu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amutuallyconvenienttimewouldbefixedforavisit.

Prime Minister Modi recently spoken with Netanyahu and discussedways to further strengthen the India-Israelfriendship.

Asked if the recent allegations against the Adani group could have an impact on the development of the strategic Israeli port of Haifa, the envoy said, “(Gautam) Adani is a very strong player in the

world’s port system. That is his core business.

Webelievethathewillmakethisportstronger.Hehas paid all the money for the port.” Shares of Adani group companies witnessed massive sell-offs after a US-based short-seller firm Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share pricemanipulation,againstthegroup.Theconglomerate hasdeniedtheallegations.

“The port is his (Adani). I believe the company has an interest in making this port successful, that is the hope of IsraelandtheinterestofIsrael,andthatisintheinterestof the Adani group as well. I believe that this port is going to beaflourishingportintheMediterranean,”Mr.Gilonsaid.

A consortium of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) and Israel’s Gadot Group won the tender in July last year to privatise the Port of Haifa for $1.18billion.

On January 31, the Adani Group acquired the port. Its Chairman Gautam Adani had appeared alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu for signing of the deal to takeovertheport.

On the long-pending FTA between Israel and India, the ambassador said negotiations have been going on for over a decade and there has been a push for it since the visit of External Affairs Minister Jaishankar to Israel a yearandahalfago.
