Chabahar Port is viewed as India's c r u c i a l c o n n e c t i v i t y l i n k t o Afghanistan, Central Asia, and the broader Eurasian region, serving as a counterbalance to Pakistan's Gwadar port and China's Belt and Road Initiative Plans are in place to c o n n e c t C h a b a h a r w i t h t h e International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which links India with Russia via Iran, enabling India to b y p a s s Pa k i s t a n a n d a c c e s s Afghanistan and ultimately Central Asia.
In April, the MEA approved a proposal by India Ports Global to assume operations at Myanmar's Sittwe Port in the Bay of Bengal. Experts noted that Sonowal's travel during a critical poll campaign underscores the significance of the agreement, which has been in the works for several years.
The pact will allow India to operate the port, the expansion of which it has
financed. The timing of the visit is also noteworthy, as it occurs in the midst of the West Asia crisis, which has affected key trade routes.
Chabahar featured prominently in discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Iranian President last year at the BRICS summit in South Africa in August, and later in November, when they spoke over the phone regarding the Gaza crisis.
A pact on Chabahar was signed in 2016 during Modi's visit to Iran In 2018, when Hassan Rouhani, then Iran president, visited India, the issue of expanding India's role at the port was a key topic of discussion. It also a
S Jaishankar visited Tehran in January 2024.
The new long-term agreement aims to replace the original contract. The new agreement will have a validity of 10 years and will be automatically extended. The original
pact only covers operations at the S
Chabahar Port and is renewed annually
In May 2016, India signed a tripartite agreement with Iran and Afghanistan to develop the Shahid Beheshti terminal. Resource-rich but landlocked Central Asian states such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have expressed keen interest in utilizing Chabahar to access the Indian Ocean Region and the Indian market. The port will also be beneficial for I

Pakistan has been attempting to persuade the Central Asian states to use Karachi port for access to the Indian Ocean Region However, India has been indicating to the C
Chabahar will be a more attractive proposition. Armenia is also eager to connect to the Chabahar port through the INSTC.
NEW DELHI : A study to assess required infrastructure and identify main industry clusters for achieving the USD 1 trillion merchandise exports target by 2030 may be submitted by August-September to the commerce ministry, an official said.
The official said that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is doing that study for the ministry
In 2023-24, India’s merchandise exports dipped by over 3 per cent to USD 437 billion. Imports during the last fiscal dipped by 5.7 per cent to USD 675.4 billion.
By 2030, the ministry is aiming to more than double the Country’s outbound shipments of goods.
Explaining the rationale behind the exercise, the official said that to take the exports to USD 1 trillion, there will be an import of about USD 1.5 trillion, so to handle USD 2.5 trillion worth of trade “we need” additional infrastructure and logistics capacity at roads, ports, airports and railways.
“If exports will increase, imports will also increase. There is a correlation between higher exports and imports. So we have to create an infrastructure to handle about USD 2.5 trillion worth of
merchandise goods,” the official added.
requirements, there is also a need to identify the industry clusters from where there will be a large movement of goods. To query when the ministry is expected to get the report, the official said “by around August-September”.
After that, the commerce ministry will share the details with ministries concer ned,
aviation, roads and national highways, and railways.
The ministries would see if they need investments for additional capacity development and where all that investment will go.
As per rough calculations and estimates, another official said that
i a m a y n e e d t o c r e a t e a n infrastructure which will support an additional 2,000 million tonne of goods movement in the ports.
Similarly in the railways, there could be a need to create an infrastructure which will allow railways to carry on an additional 338 million tonne of goods by 2030. Airports also need to create an additional 5 million tonne of facilities for movement of goods.
“The study is trying to identify what
kind of infrastructure is required at the exit points and which are the clusters from where there will be the larger movement of goods,” the government official added.
Sectors which are expected to help India boost the country’s exports in the coming years include electronics, pharmaceuticals, marine products, and engineering.
I n d i a ’ s e l e c t r o n i c s g o o d s ’ export rose by about 24 per cent to USD 29.12 billion in 2023-24. Drugs and pharmaceuticals exports increased 9.67 per cent year-on-year to USD 27.9 billion in the last fiscal.
The main clusters for electronic goods in the country include Chennai (Sriperumbudur) and Bengaluru (Sri city) For shrimp, huge opportunities are coming up in states like Gujarat, Odisha, and West Bengal. Similarly for pharma, Baddi in Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim are major clusters
“So today, if there is a movement of 100 containers in these clusters, tomorrow we may need 300 and for that we need an assessment and planning.. We have to see if we need more internal container depots (ICDs),” the official said.
MUMBAI: The Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) recently said that it has signed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Surat Integrated Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n D e v e l o p m e n t Corporation Limited (SITCO) for the construction and development of Surat Multi-Modal Transportation Hub.
According to an official statement, this MoU aims at reinforcing the cooperation and collaboration between the two organisations to leverage respective strengths for the construction and development of Surat Multi-Modal Transportation Hub on land allocated by the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Gujarat. Additionally,
the potential for consultancy, capacity building and other technical assistance from HUDCO will also be explored. The MoU has been executed on May 9 in NewDelhiatHUDCOBhawanbyHUDCO CMD Sanjay Kulshrestha and SITCO MD Manoj Garg in the presence of senior officials from Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) and HUDCO.

In line with this vision, GTI achieved a significant milestone by successfully despatching its first rail with DPD containers. DPD import containers at GTI are evacuated by road. Converting road movement to rail offers clear benefits to GTI by reducing load on gates (average 3500 containers move across GTI gates) and to customers as rail movement is more cost-effective than road.
However, the biggest impact is decarbonization as rail movement offers a sustainable alternative to traditional road transportation, significantly reducing emissions. By leveraging rail infrastructure, GTI aims to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for the logistics industry
This milestone was made possible through a collaborative effort of PSA BDP , GTI and CONCOR and the first rakes rolled out on 11th & 12th May, 2024. The inaugural rail movement saw 2 rakes carrying cargo belonging to Sabic Innovative Plastics India Pvt Ltd from GTI rail siding at Nhava Sheva to Varnama ICD, Vadodara, and onward to SABIC's Plant.
SINGAPORE: PSA Singapore, in collaboration with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and “K” Line, has renewed and extended the joint venture at the Asia Automobile Terminal Singapore (AATS) for another 12 years to meet the growing demand for automotive transhipment capacity and connectivity.
AATS, with its capacity to handle 1 million vehicles annually, stands as Southeast Asia’s largest hub for transhipping finished vehicles. It operates two specialised deepwater Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) berths and a Multi-level Automotive Yard at PSA Singapore’s Pasir Panjang Terminal.
Apart from AATS, PSA Singapore also operates three other common user berths serving more than 10 other car carriers, connecting automotive producers in Northeast and Southeast Asia with their key markets in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
The renewed AATS partnership will allow the leading RoRo carriers to continue using PSA Singapore as their primary automotive transhipment hub in the region.
Regional CEO Southeast Asia Nelson Quek said, “Since receiving its maiden call in 2009, AATS has been a cornerstone for the Singapore automotive transhipment hub. In a constantly expanding and competitive market, the extension of the AATS collaboration reflects our partners’ trust in PSA Singapore’s value proposition. It also highlights our commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable, and customer-focused solutions to meet changing demands.”

NEW DELHI : The government will accord focused attention to promote India’s textiles exports, which declined for the second year in a row in 2023-24, Textiles Secretary Rachna Shah said.
The Government has set an a m b i t i o u s t a r g e t t o a c h i e v e USD 100 billion export for textile products by 2030.
The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel from India during April 2023-March 2024 registered a de-growth of 3.24 per cent at USD 34.4 billion, as compared to USD 35 5 billion in April 2022-March 2023.
In 2021-22, outward shipments of textiles and apparel were recorded at
over USD 41 billion.
“We had challenges like the Red Sea crisis making it slightly more challenging,” Shah said on the decline in India’s textiles exports in 2023-24.
Although geo-political challenges remain, the textiles secretary said some exporters have reported improvement in their order books in the first quarter and the shipments are likelytoimproveinthecomingmonths
We will be looking at more focussed attention on products which have greater export potential and the production linked incentive scheme is focused on those globally traded products,” the textiles secretary told.
measures being looked at to promote exports from the sector, including “possibly looking at newer markets”. S h e s a i d t h e f r e e t r a d e agreements , which India has entered into with other nations “hopefully will open up more opportunities” for the textiles exports.
Sharing the outlook for outward shipments from the textiles sector, Shah said: “We should look at higher exports happening now. The global demand also will start looking better Already in the first quarter we have seen some of our exporters have reported that the order positions for apparel, made-ups etc, is looking up so that should play out”.

NEW DELHI: India’s merchandise exports seem to have weathered the headwinds quite well so far amid heightened geopolitical tensions that have rendered the global environment highly uncertain but while support continues from some of its traditional large export partners such as Europe and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – as per destination-wise trade data of the Government and industry shipments to the US India’s largest exporting destination –declined marginally in fiscal 2024
which is prompting New Delhi to scout for new partners across untapped geographies
On-year export growth entered the positivezoneinAugust2023forthefirst time in many months and has since displayedhealthymomentum Afteran average 13 1 per cent on-year contraction during April-July 2023, exportslogged2.2percentgrowthover August 2023-March 2024 Indeed, export growth in the last quarter of fiscal 2024 was faster at 4 5 per cent The performance was largely in sync
with global trade, according to CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics According to latest data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, global merchandise exports declined 4 6 per cent in 2023, similar to India’s 4 7 per cent decline during the period, thereby keeping India’s share in world exports stable at 1 . 8 p e r c e n t . I n d i a ’ s e x p o r t performance was, in fact, better than developing Asia as a whole, which saw merchandise exports decline a higher 6.8 per cent in 2023.

TAIWAN: Yang Ming
M a r i n e Tr a n s p o r t
C o r p o r a t i o n (Yang Ming) held its 392nd Board Meeting on 10th May to approve its Q1 financial report of 2024. The consolidated revenues in Q1 totaled NT$ 43.8 billion (US$ 1.39 billion). The net profit after tax stood at NT$ 9 38 billion (US$ 298.42 million), with an EPS of NT$ 2.69.
In Q1 2024, the supply chains of container shipping industry encountered challenges from the Red Sea crisis, leading vessels to divert to the Cape of Good Hope, which absorbed vessel capacity. Meanwhile, demand improved given the gradual enhancement in the manufacturingPMIofmajoreconomies, smoothinventory destockingontheclientside, andmanufacturersresuming production post-Chinese New Year. Looking ahead, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) upped the global GDP growth rate for 2024 by 0.2% from February's forecast to 3.1% on 2nd May Despite the steady growth of global economy, geopolitical risks persist. Furthermore, the U.S., India, and other emerging markets are showing strong signs of recovery. With fiscal stimulus measures, China's economic growth is expected to surpass expectations, and inflation is easing in most economies. Major central banks worldwide may consider cutting interest rates to boost household purchasing power and economic growth Nonetheless, potential geopolitical conflicts escalating could disrupt energy and financial
markets, impacting the global economy significantly. According to Alphaliner's latest forecast, capacity supply growth in 2024 is expected to be at 9.7%, exceeding demand growth at 3%. However, uncertainties still linger over the maritime industry, with geopolitical factors causing delays in turnaround times and port congestion. Furthermore, the Panama Canal transit restrictions continue despite an improvement in water levels The conditions are expected to persist until 2025, impacting vessel supply and stable service.
Faced with shipping oversupply and geopolitical uncertainties, Yang Ming will remain cautious and actively adjust business strategies for vessels, containers, and terminals to provide global customers with stable and efficient transportation services.
