PLI scheme to help Indian economy beat China; India to grow faster than emerging markets: World Bank WA S H I N G T O N : N a r e n d r a M o d i G o v e r n m e n t ’ s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme will likely help India’s economy grow at 8.7% in the next financial year 2022-23, beating emerging market peers including China, said the World Bank. In comparison, China, Indonesia and Bangladesh are expected to grow at 5.1%, 5.2% and 6.4% respectively in the emerging market and developing economies. The World Bank said in its Global Economic Prospects report it has upgraded its expectations for India’s growth to 8.7% in FY 2022-23 and 6.8% in FY 2023-24 “to reflect an improving investment outlook with private investment, particularly manufacturing, benefiting from the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, and increases in infrastructure investment.” In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre launched the PLI scheme with incentives of Rs 1.97 lakh crore over a five-year period for 13 key sectors, to boost production and exports. Government has launched the scheme for sectors
such as telecom, electronics, auto parts, advanced batteries, pharmaceutical drugs, and solar energy components. This incentivising scheme in turn is expected to increase the country’s production by $520 billion in the next five years, Prime Minister Modi said last year. PLI to add 1.7% to India’s GDP India is expected to add 1.7% in its GDP by 2027 through these schemes spurring new jobs, BNP Paribas Asset Management said in a note. “According to industry estimates, the schemes could generate $150 billion in new sales, and $70 billion of domestic value-add, or 1.7% of 2027 GDP. They could add a substantial 0.3% to annual GDP growth between 2023 and 2027. The direct impact of these schemes is likely to be larger on labour (an estimated 2.8 million new jobs) than on capital spending (estimated at $28 billion). There is likely to be significant upstream activity as a result, driving further gains in jobs and spending,” the note added. Cont’d. Pg. 2
Exports rose 33% to $7.63 billion during January first week NEW DELHI: India's exports grew 33.16 per cent to $7.63 billion during January 1-7 period owing to healthy per for mance by various sectors like engineering, petroleum and gems and jewellery, according to preliminary data released by the Commerce Ministry. Exports stood at $5.73 billion during the same period last year. In the first week of January 2022, imports rose by around 33 per cent to $11.60 billion as compared to $8.72 billion in the same period of 2021.
Imports, excluding petroleum, increased in the period under review by 29.88 per cent over the same period of 2020-21, according to the Ministry's data. The ministry has expressed confidence that the healthy growth rate would help in achieving the target of $400 billion worth goods exports this fiscal. The country's merchandise exports in December 2021 surged 37 per cent on an annual basis to $37.29 billion, the highest-ever monthly figure.

PLI scheme to help Indian economy beat China; India to grow faster than emerging markets: World Bank Cont’d. from Pg. 1 As an emerging economy, India holds potential to tap into the market gap left by China, as the latter recoups itself from supply chain snags and trade war with the United States. “As a stable economy with a host of enabling factors for attracting investments, we believe India is a natural choice in filling the supply chain vacuum the exodus from China has left. Recognising this opportunity, India’s prime minister has laid out his vision of a ‘Self-reliant India’,” BNP Paribas Asset Management said. The World Bank said in its report that “growth in emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) is forecast to moderate to 4.6 percent in 2022, as macroeconomic policy support continues to be withdrawn and the rebound in China eases.” The World Bank however gave a positive outlook for India saying investments in India should benefit from the resumption of contact-intensive services, and ongoing but narrowing monetary and fiscal policy support. “The growth outlook will also be
supported by ongoing structural reforms, a better-than-expected financial sector recovery, and measures to resolve financial sector challenges despite ongoing risks,” IMF said. As per the Global Economic Prospects report, following a strong rebound in 2021, the global economy is entering a pronounced slowdown amid fresh threats from COVID variants and a rise in inflation, debt, and income inequality that could endanger the recovery in emerging and developing economies. Global growth is expected to decelerate markedly from 5.5 per cent in 2021 to 4.1 per cent in 2022 and 3.2 per cent in 2023 as pentup demand dissipates and as fiscal and monetary support is unwound across the world. For the fiscal year 2021-22 the Washington DC-based institution said it has kept its GDP expectations unchanged at 8.3%. According to the government’s first advance estimates India released last week, India is expected to grow at 9.2% in comparison to RBI’s forecast of 9.5%.

The Iranian official further there are investment opportunities for the IRISL in Chabahar Port including increasing the number of containers, w h a r v e s , warehouses, centers for fixing ships, fuel stations, and also increasing the number of operating vessels.
NYK President presents his Annual New Year’s Message TOKYO: The following is an excerpt from the New Year’s speech made by NYK President Hitoshi Nagasawa as business opened for 2022. Happy New Year! Although everyone could not join us at today, I am still overjoyed to be able to welcome this New Year with you all in person again. I would like to say a few words to everyone in the NYK Group as we start another year. Looking at the financial position of the NYK Group, as explained in the announcement of the financial results in November, we expect to achieve a new record-high consolidated recurring profit of \710 billion in fiscal 2021, greatly exceeding the initial forecast. Our group has benefitted from a favorable tailwind, but I truly believe this result is possible due to the efforts of everyone in the group who have worked hard to fully take advantage of this tailwind and carry out the daily work despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19. I would like to take this opportunity to express to you all my sincere respect and gratitude. As we look at the global trends in 2022, there will likely be continued confusion and chaos. For example, in regard to the economy, there are numerous uncertainties, including the start of tapering in the United States during which the scope of the quantitative easing programs will gradually be reduced, fiscal policies in several countries directed at strengthening fiscal sustainability, and concerns about deteriorating conditions in Japan due to the sixth COVID-19 wave. Moreover, the geopolitical risks are increasingly centered on the growing confrontation between the United States and China and also Russia and Ukraine. As we move increasingly toward living with COVID-19, the situation contains a complex mix of factors, including how well the open international trading systems such as TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) and RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) will function, making it difficult to foresee the main trends this year.
We need to carry out our daily work while remaining conscious of how the global trends will influence our group’s businesses. This year, I ask you to be attentive to the situation, convey the information you obtain, and aim to become an organization that naturally embodies this type of communication. I also ask you to build trusting relationships through enhanced internal and external connections. To achieve this, starting with the basics, make an effort to greet those around you and express gratitude during your daily work. I would like to mention again today the importance of ESG management. Since announcing the “NYK Group ESG Story,” various activities have been implemented with the aim of reforming awareness, and I feel ESG management is gradually becoming more firmly established within the group. By strongly promoting this ESG management, I am certain we will obtain customers’ and society’s trust and further solidify our group’s status within society. Let’s all combine our strength with the aim of becoming the world’s top comprehensive global-logistics enterprise. In order to achieve this, maintaining an awareness of safety in the workplaces at sea, land, and air will be extremely important. Safety is an immovable core tenet of the NYK Group, and I ask you to reconfirm your awareness that safety is the foundation upon which ESG management exists. Lastly, I hope you will all find personal success in 2022 within the vast opportunities available throughout the NYK Group. Also, I wish for the continued health and safety of everyone working on the front lines of operations at sea, land, and air, as well as everyone working within the NYK Group and your families.
Credit growth visible across sectors: SBI research report Sectors such as healthcare, commercial real estate, pharmaceu cals, infrastructure, NBFCs and construc on will be the prime beneficiaries of such non-PSU credit. Co-lending with NBFCs remains one of the most preferred op ons for lending as it also helps NBFCs churn their capital and offer on-lending at affordable cost, SBI said. NEW DELHI: The December quarter witnessed a visible expansion in the credit growth across sectors, State Bank of India (SBI)’s economic research department said in its latest report. The incremental credit-deposit (CD) ratio beginning Q3FY22 is currently at 133, against the incremental CD ratio of just two during H1FY22, the report said.L Incremental deposits in the banking system have declined by Rs 2.2 lakh crore over this time period, whereas credit growth has picked up by Rs 3.5 lakh crore. Further, the deposit growth has been led by low-cost CASA deposits, far outpacing time deposits, as people preferred a precautionary approach amid continued uncertainties, the report said. “Sectors where demand for credit started picking up during the last three months include NBFCs, telecom, petroleum, chemical, electronics, gems & jewellery and infrastructure including power and roads,” the report observed, adding that big-ticket disbursements have been seen in these sectors. “This, apart from our recent understanding of market participants, suggests that demand from non-PSU credit is set to outpace that of PSU credit in Q4FY22,” the report said. Sectors such as healthcare, commercial real estate, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, NBFCs and construction will be the prime beneficiaries of such non-PSU credit. Co-lending
with NBFCs remains one of the most preferred options for lending as it also helps NBFCs churn their capital and offer onlending at affordable cost, SBI said. The report said its in-house industry survey suggests robustness in capacity utilisation, with more than two-thirds of respondents suggesting current utilisation level of more than 70% and 36% of respondents, from sectors such as textiles, petrochemicals and building materials, indicating better utilisation levels. Issuances of commercial papers increased by around 40% in the first nine months of FY22, indicating increased working capital requirement, the report said. “However, bond primary issuances declined by more than 25% during the same period. This indicates the reverse credit flow from banks to the bond market in FY21 is now on the wane as deleveraging of corporates and substituting of high-cost debt with low-cost debt from the bond markets seems to have been largely completed.” “Most importantly, the capital to risk-weighted assets ratio of scheduled commercial banks has touched a new peak of 16.6% and their provisioning coverage ratio too increased from 67.6% in March 2021 to 68.1% in September 2021 (excluding AUCA). This will remain a positive enabler for future credit growth,” the report said.

Container prices rise 10-15% in India as Omicron hits operations at Major Global Ports MUMBAI: Container prices at major Indian ports jumped 10-15 percent in January from a month ago as the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus disrupted global supply chains. The average price of a 20-foot dry container at Chennai port rose to about $2,100 (Rs 1,55,316) in the first week of January from about $1,880 in December according to shipping companies. The average price of a 20-ft dry container in Mundra climbed to $1,950 in the first week of January from $1,763 in December. At Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, the average was $1,900 against $1,775 in December, industry officials said recently. The price of a 40-ft dry container at Chennai increased to $5,100 from $4,780 in December. At Mundra and Nhava Sheva, the prices rose to $4,900 and $4,850, respectively, from $4,650 and $4,600, respectively, in December, they said. The rise in container rates was on account of various factors, including widespread restocking by retailers in China ahead of the Lunar New Year
starting February 1 and the country’s rising Covid-19 cases. “Container turnaround times at major ports in China are once again on the rise due to bottlenecks ports are facing because of rising Covid cases and logistical bottlenecks,” an official from Container xChange said. Suspension of trucking activities in several parts of China, coupled with strict control on trucks moving goods in many districts, has slowed the movement of containers in major Chinese ports, Bloomberg said in a report last week. US, UK congestion Apart from the prolonged turnaround time for containers in China, ports in the US and the UK are experiencing severe congestion. “Until congestion at major ports in the US and the UK is cleared, there will continue to be a major imbalance in the supply and demand of both vessel capacity and containers. As the Omicron variant brings more disruption, with the Chinese New Year around the corner and some ports,
including Ningbo, already facing lockdowns, we are expecting a volatile start to the year for ocean freight logistics,” Jefferies Equity Research said in a report earlier this week. “Many companies are likely to get into bidding wars to extradite their export and import cargoes and this is likely to lead to higher tariffs,” a Mumbai-based shipping analyst said. India’s exports increased 33 percent to $7.63 billion during January 1-7 on account of healthy sales of engineering goods, petroleum, and gems and jewellery, according to preliminary data from the commerce ministry. “Trading volumes have risen in the past two months and they are expected to remain high for the next few months as a number of companies look to supply the pent-up demand in other countries,” another Mumbai-based shipping analyst said. Demand for Indian merchandise and gems and jewellery has risen in the past few months, shipping companies said. Demand for white goods has also picked up, they said.
India, South Korea set $50 billion bilateral trade target before 2030 NEW DELHI: India and South Korea set a bilateral trade target of $50 billion before 2030, as South Korea's Trade Minister Yeo Han-Koo held talks with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi. The two Ministers held wideranging discussions covering the whole gamut of bilateral trade and investment-related aspects. They also agreed to impart fresh momentum to the discussions on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CEPA) upgradation negotiations and also promote extensive B2B interactions on trade and investment between industry leaders of the two countries, a Commerce and Industry Ministry statement said. The two Ministers agreed to address difficulties expressed by industry from both sides and instructed their respective negotiating teams to meet on a regular basis in order to conclude the CEPA upgradation negotiations, as soon as possible, in a time-bound manner, building upon support from relevant stakeholders, so as to try to achieve the target of $50 billion before
2030 which was agreed at the summit meeting in 2018. These regular negotiations shall be a forum to discuss the difficulties of the business community from both countries and emerging trade-related issues including supply chain resilience. The ministers agreed to boost bilateral trade to achieve growth in a fair and balanced manner to the mutual advantage of both sides.
According to data from South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, bilateral trade in the first half (January-June) of 2021 was recorded at $10.97 billion, an increase of 38 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year. South Korea's exports to India increased 38.5 per cent ($7.4 billion), imports increased 37.4 per cent ($3.6 billion), and the trade balance recorded a surplus of $3.8 billion.
India-Bangladesh Trade Portal launched GUWAHATI: Indian Chamber of Commerce in association with Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, Guwahati, developed a portal namely “India Bangladesh Trade Portal” for the North East India Region. This trade portal will facilitate the business frater nity of India and Bangladesh. It’s a trade portal wherein
database of exporters and importers of both northeast India and Bangladesh would be uploaded, and would enable B2B collaboration between buyers and sellers of both countries. Shah Mohammad Tanvir Monsur, Asst. High Commissioner, Bangladesh High Commission, Guwahati, said that India-Bangladesh bilateral trade
statistics amounts to 10 billion dollars per annum, but North-East India contributes only 1 per cent of this trade statistics, which includes traditional items like coal, vegetables, limestone, tea etc. He highlighted the potential of other items like handloom and handicrafts and muga silk to augment the business trade with northeast India.

Fresh Covid wave may slow down logistics activity pickup NEW DELHI: Logistics activity picked up in December 2021, helped by a healthy uptick in consumer spending, higher exports and wedding-related shopping. Higher activity aided freight rates which were up 4-5 per cent despite fuel prices remaining unchanged. However as India faces a third wave of Covid infection, analysts expect logistics activity to get impacted on account of disruption in supply chains and movement of labour. E-way bill generation After the slowdown in November last year, e-way bill generation grew 17 per cent m-o-m in December at 72 million. E-way bill generation has been on rise for the last few months, except November, indicating a sustained improvement in truck operations due to the pickup in economic activity. “December saw e-way bill generation growing 12 per cent y-o-y, with intra-State growing 13 per cent y-oy and inter-State growing 9 per cent. The improved activity is also reflected in the FASTag toll collection numbers, which saw 16 per cent m-o-m growth to new highs of Rs. 3,700 crore,” Motilal Oswal said in a report. Another indication of the pick up in
activity was the growth in movement of export-import cargo. Indian Railways reported a 5 per cent growth in exportimport container volumes. Market share for Railways in export-import containers stood at around 33 per cent in December (from around 34 per cent in the year-ago period). Domestic container volumes handled by Railways grew 23 per cent y-o-y in December. Besides, freight rates remained firm during December on robust demand, driven by more consumer spending, wedding season demand, and strong exports. On the other hand, diesel prices remained unchanged during the month. Truck utilisation stood healthy at 80–85 per cent levels. On a cumulative basis, freight rates grew 40–45 per cent over June–December 2021, as per the I n d i a n Fo u n d a t i o n o f Tr a n s p o r t Research and Training (IFTRT), the report added. “Going forward, freight rates may soften over the near term as the slowdown in activity due to Covid-19 may impact volumes,” the brokerage said. However cargo volumes handled at major ports remained flat on an annual basis at 63 million tonnes in December, a 6 per cent growth over November 2021.
December witnessed a y-o-y growth in fertilisers, container traffic and Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants (POL) segment, which was offset by a sharp decline in iron ore/coal segment. Container cargo, on TEU basis, grew 9 per cent y-o-y in December 2021. “Growth could have been better, but was negatively impacted by the container shortage and elevated sea freight rates,” Motilal Oswal pointed out in the report. ‘Potential to derail’ ICRA in a January report on road logistics said growth over the medium term would continue to be driven by demand from e-commerce, FMCG, retail, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and industrial goods coupled with industry paradigm shift towards organised logistics players, post the GST and Eeway bill implementation. “The sector is also expected to witness some consolidation on account of the stress led by the pandemic. However, the threat of a new variant, has the potential to derail the momentum of recovery, if it becomes a source of fresh round of lockdowns/restrictions in near term,” it had said.
Textile sector exports increase by 41% in April - December 2021 as compared to last year Growth signals an economic rebound NEW DELHI: Textile sector has continuously maintained trade surplus with exports manifold higher than imports. In FY 2020-21 there was a deceleration in textile exports due to pandemic disrupting the supply chain and demand. However, signs of recovery are visible in 2021-22. During AprilDecember, 2021 the total Textiles & Apparel including Handicrafts exports was US$ 29.8 billion as compared to US$
21.2 billion for the same period last year. This implies robust growth of approximately 41% over last year. Growth signals an economic rebound. Even compared to pre-pandemic year i.e. 2019-20 export for textile sector ( Te x t i l e s & A p p a r e l i n c l u d i n g Handicrafts) increased by 14.6% from April- December 2021 as compared to April-December 2019. Textiles exhibited an increase in export of 31%, Cotton Yarn/ Fabrics/ Made-ups, Handloom products
etc. exhibited an increase of 43% and Jute products exhibited an increase of 33% from April- December 2021 as compared to April-December, 2019. Government has set the target of $44 billion for Textiles & Apparel including Handicrafts and approximately 68% of annual target has already been achieved. The last quarter of FY always has higher activity than the earlier quarters. Hence industry is hopeful that targets will be duly met.
Rice exporters seek extension of interest subsidy scheme to boost shipments NEW DELHI: Rice exporters has sought an extension of the interest subsidy scheme, which ended last year, from the government as it will help in further boosting the outbound shipments of the commodity. All India Rice Exporters' Association (AIREA) President Nathi Ram Gupta said that if the extension is not considered on priority, export might decline further and also lead to the closure of a number of units due to becoming economically unviable to sustain in business. He said basmati rice has a longgestation period of six months to one year during which it has to be stored and cured for exporting and because of the
long-storage period, exporters incur a huge interest burden. Further disruption in logistics and elongating supply time due to the COVID-19 pandemic is also impacting the rice exporters, he said in a statement. "Interest accounts for a substantial margin to the overall cost of Basmati. The rice industry used to sustain and was able to maintain the growth in export due to support through the interest equalisation scheme. "The association has been knocking the doors of all authorities concerned to extend the interest equalisation (or subsidy) scheme immediately," he said. The scheme, he said, was there till
September last year. "The scheme was available till March 31, 2021, in consonance with the Foreign Trade Policy period 2015-20. However, the extant policy has now been extended up to March 31, 2022. "But, the interest equalisation scheme was last extended and available up to September 30, 2021, only and the extension of which is pending for long," Gupta added. During 2020-21, the total rice exports stood at USD 8.5 billion (USD 4 billion basmati and USD 4.5 billion nonbasmati). However, basmati exports declined 21.41 per cent during April-November 2021-22, according to the association.

A.P. Moller - Maersk accelerates Net Zero emission targets to 2040 and sets milestone 2030 targets COPENHAGEN: A.P. Moller Maersk (Maersk) announces new aspiring emissions targets expected to align the company with the Net Zero criteria of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pathway to limit global war ming to 1.5°C. They include a societal commitment to act now and drive material impact in this decade, and a commitment to deliver net zero supply chains to customers by 2040. The targets go beyond previous efforts to reduce emissions related to the ocean fleet as they cover all direct and indirect emissions across the entire Maersk business. “As a global provider of end-to-end logistics services across all transport modes, it is a strategic imperative for Maersk to extend our net zero ambition to the total footprint of the business. The science is clear, we must act now to deliver significant progress in this decade. These very ambitious targets mark our commitment to society and to the many customers who call for net zero supply chains, said Soren Skou, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk. 2030 targets for signicant absolute emissions reductions Tangible near-term targets for 2030 are set to ensure significant progress on curbing direct Maersk emissions already in this decade. These include a 50% reduction in emissions per transported container in the Maersk Ocean fleet and a 70% reduction in absolute emissions from fully controlled terminals. Depending on growth in the ocean business, this will lead to absolute emissions reductions between 35% and 50% from a 2020 baseline. “Our updated targets and accelerated timelines reflect a very challenging, yet viable pathway to net zero which is driven by advances in technology and solutions. What is needed is a rapid scale-up which we will strive to achieve in close collaboration with customers and suppliers across the entire supply chain,” said Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands, A.P. Moller – Maersk. As recommended by SBTi, over the decade Maersk will go above and beyond the 1.5°C-aligned targets and invest in building a portfolio of natural climate solutions that will result in around five million tons of CO2 savings per year by 2030. 2030 targets to lead the industry on green offerings To maximise progress towards net zero supply chains in 2040, ambitious 2030 targets for a range of green product offerings are introduced, adding to solutions including Maersk’s Emissions Dashboard and Maersk ECO Delivery. They aim to reinforce Maersk as an industry leading
provider of green supply chain solutions and cover Ocean, Air, Contract Logistics (warehouses and depots) and Cold Chain businesses (see fact box below). These products will utilise green technologies and solutions to ensure that they provide real emission reductions within the supply chain. Covering indirect emissions means the targets also address emissions from e.g., inland transport services and vessel building which are provided by third party suppliers. Tackling this challenge will require extensive data insights and close collaboration with local and regional suppliers of products and services across the Maersk business footprint. Fact Box The Maersk Decarbonisation Targets 2040 Net zero emissions across entire business and all scopes • Will be aligned with the SBTi net zero criteria 2030 Commitments to customers and society to act now and have impact in this decade Emissions reduction aligned with SBTi 1.5°C pathway (Scope 1 and 2, baseline 2020) • Ocean: ~50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity • Terminals: ~70% absolute reduction of greenhouse gas emissions • Natural Climate Solutions used above and beyond 1.5°C target to build a portfolio that generates around five million tons of CO2 savings per year by 2030 Industry leading green customer offerings across the supply chain • Ocean: 25% of all cargo transported using green* fuels • Air: Minimum 30% of cargo transported using Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) • Contract Logistics (warehouses and depots) and Cold Chain: Minimum 90% green* operations (Scope 1 and 2) • Inland transportation: Industry leading green offering – targets will be set during 2022.
Roadmap to deliver net zero by 2040
