LONDON: The Red Sea crisis has seen liner operators operating at least 13 ships on each Asia-Europe string, and this is unlikely to change, even if Suez Canal transits resume, according to Alphaliner Analyst Jan Tiedemann.
He told the Korea Ocean Business Corporation’s recent maritime conference that this deployment had held off more vessel supply and suggested that liner operators should continue sailing round the Cape of Good Hope, if possible.
He s a i d : “ I t h ink sh i p pi n g companies will stick to the route as long as possible. The Cape of Good Hope benefits shipping companies, as it averts the current oversupply.”
To avoid Houthi attacks in the
Red Sea, mainline operators have been rerouting Asia-Europe services round the Cape of Good Hope and Mr Tiedemann predicted they would not be able to return to the Suez Canal until 2026 – and even if they did, they would not operate their container fleets in the same way as before.
Due to the crisis, the operating period of Asia-Europe routes has increased from 12 weeks to 14 weeks, due to the detour round the Cape, and the number of vessels deployed increased accordingly
A c c o r d i n g t o A l p h a l i n e r ’ s analysis, the container fleet on the Asia-Europe route grew about 16%, while there was a 4%-5% decrease in supply across the entire global shipping market.
Mr Tiedemann added: “Shipping lines won’t reduce their fleets operating on the Asia-Europe route to fewer than 13 ships, even if Suez transits resume. They’ll try to ease the severe oversupply market by adding one more ship compared with before the Red Sea crisis.”
Record newbuilding orders during the Covid-19 pandemic and this year means relentless newbuilding d e l i v e r i e s i n t h e s h o r t t e r m Alphaliner’s statistics show that, in September, the global container fleet reached a record high, of 7,073 ships for 30.65m teu. This is an increase of more than 10% on a year ago.
Current orders for newbuildings represent 7.47m teu, around 25% of the active fleet.

LONDON: For shippers and BCOs, over recent years container shipping has felt like a relentless cycle of disruptions, delays and freight rate volatility In this article we explore what measures logistics teams can take to mitigate these challenging dynamics.
Drewry data shows that there have now been 4 or 5 years of huge volatility, depending on which market segment you look at. We have also warned our shipper, forwarder and carrier customers to expect little change next year, with 2025 likely to mark the 5th consecutive year of high volatility in ocean freight rates.
D r e w r y t r a c k s b o t h o c e a n contract rates and spot rates and found that average freight rates (including both contract and spot rates) on the major East-West routes decreased by about 60% in 2023 and are expected to have risen by about 20% in 2024 year-on-year
Our forecast model for the main scenario of expected US port strikes
in Q1 2025 shows that ocean contract rates on routes to the US will rise in 2 0 2 5 , d e s p i t e t h e a d d i t i o n o f substantial new ship capacity. We also anticipate that spot rates on EastWest routes will decline in the second half of 2025.
Even for contract rates, which used to be much more stable than spot rates, we have seen wild price swings since the beginning of 2021, with standard deviations in average contract rates increasing more then 10-fold.
So, this is already 4 years of crazy price volatility in ocean contract rates (2021 to 2024). But for spot rates, which tend to be used by small shippers or for ad hoc or excess volumes by large carriers, many shippers were already starting to feel the effects of extreme volatility in 2020.
This year, rates in the spot market appeared to have peaked in July and saw 3 months of rapid decline, but started rising again in late October
In the contract market, according to shipper/members of Drewry Benchmarking Club, exporters and importers have had to battle with carriers about requests to accept Red Sea and Peak Season Surcharges. Due to capacity shortages, carriers have been able to enforce surcharges on the Asian routes, as happens during strong years.
What should shippers do about these long-lasting problems?
Shippers need to be aware that the shipping industry will continue to be disrupted and that there are risks and a need for contingency plans and active vendor management.
Resilience will require a different way of vetting, selecting and working with ocean carriers or third-party logistics providers and greater attention to assessing and responding to geopolitical risks Indeed, some shippers we are working with have
monitoring geopolitical risk in supply chains.
NEW DELHI: Despite losing Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) status under the Trump administration's first term, India's trade with the United States demonstrated notable resilience and growth, highlighted a report by State Bank of India.
The report noted that while the GSP status has yet to be restored, India has seen rising exports in several key sectors where it has gained a comparative advantage over major competitors like China.
It noted that footwear, minerals, chemicals, and machinery have all shown growth, reflecting India's deepening integration into global value chains and the country's ability to capitalizeonshiftingtradedynamics
The report said "India's GSP status has still not been restored, a commodity wise breakup reveals rise in India's export of certain
commodities in which it has gained comparative advantage over China".
The report highlighted that from 2017 to 2021, a detailed commodity analysis revealed that India has developed a Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) in exports of m e t a l s , m i n e r a l s , c h e m i c a l s , footwear, textiles, and intermediate clothing goods, with RCA values consistently above 1 in these sectors.
This indicates a competitive edge, particularly as India positions itself as a favorable alternative to China in these industries.
The report also added that the ongoing supply chain relocations and potential for a second Tr ump administration, or "Trump 2.0," may further enhance India's role in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and textiles, which are likely to see gains as companies and countries reassess their dependencies.
"Further, given the global supply chain relocation and Trump 2 0 sectors such as Pharmaceuticals, Textiles, Electronics are likely to gain" the report added.
A closer look at India's iron and steel exports to the U S further highlighted this trend. In 2018, the U.S. imposed tariffs of 25 per cent on steel, 10 per cent on aluminum, and approximately 30 per cent on washing machines. Nevertheless, Indian iron and steel exports to the U.S. surged by 44.7 per cent from FY20 to FY21.
India has maintained a trade surplus with the U.S., demonstrating the robustness of its export sector even amid restrictive tariffs.
India's expanding foothold in the U S market and its comparative advantage in specific sectors position it well to continue reaping economic benefits, as global supply chains evolve and trade policies shift.
