India set to play a powerful role for the ambitious IMEEC corridor

NEW DELHI : Indian ports, with their rich historical heritage and strategic importance, are set to play a crucial role in catapulting global trade to the next level.

The India-UAE Virtual Trade

Cor ridor deal signed in the presence of the visiting Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalend Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was one of the two agreements signed with the increasingly critical Gulf ally on September 10 The deal, according to officials is a crucial step towards the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and will reduce administrative processes and time, logistics and transport costs and will also enhance ease of doing business.

At the forefront of the ambitious IMEC are Indian ports which will play a pivotal role in India’s journey to becoming a $5 trillion economy The project envisages a sea-link between India and Jabel Ali port in UAE from where a rail with transport the goods to the Haifa port in Israel via Saudi Arabia and Jordan. From here, goods will again be shipped to Europe via the sea route.

Industry experts say that the

number of Indian seafarers in global shipping is expected to increase to 20 per cent in the next decade from the current 10 per cent. And, with more than 90 per cent of global trade moving via shipping, the role of Indian ports and shippers is expected to explode. Many big ships of the world are completely dependent on Indian sailors.

K a r a n A d a n i , M a n a g i n g Director, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) says, “by the year 2030, India can achieve the capacity to handle a volume of 100 crore tonnes and can also become the centre point of the region by creating a reliable supply chain for neighbouring countries.”

A c c o r d i n g t o a r e p o r t b y McKinsey & Company, the Indian maritime sector is currently worth about $130 billion and is expected to grow to $300 billion by 2025. Of this, the share of the shipping industry is estimated to be around $95 billion, while the share of ports will be around $60 billion.

JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal cited the example of Singapore and said, “we can also create such ports which handle not just our own cargo but also of the countries around us.”

India is already in the ‘whitelist’ of the International Maritime O r g a n i z a t i o n T h e l i s t i n g guarantees proper licensing systems, training centres, flag state control and port state control in the member countries and propels great demand for the Indian maritime players.

Major ports in India handled 818milliontons(MT)ofcargotrafficin FY24, up 4.45 per cent from 784 MT in FY 2023 This comprised a large part of India’s merchandise exports and imports In 2024 and beyond, the maritime transportation remains one of the fastest growing sectors, full of challenges and opportunities These range from green targets to regulations and some wavy situations like geopolitical tensions and supply chain issues. India, with its extensive coastlineofnearly7,500km,liesonthe strategic European-Asian route It is in the perfect position to play a vital role in the global maritime trade networkandoffersimmensepotential for substantial economic growth and development

Already, work is underway on war footing to reach targets defined under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and work towards the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

US Presidential Debate: Trump’s import tariffs are ‘history repeating’ and

will

cause a spike in ocean Container Shipping markets

O S L O : D o n a l d Tr u m p ’ s proposed import tariffs would see the cost of shipping goods by ocean increase in a repeat of the market spike seen during his first term as US President.

Trump defended his trade policy during last night’s Presidential Debate, which includes blanket tariffs of up to 20% on all imports and additional tariffs of 60% to 100% on goods from China.

However, data released by Xeneta – the ocean freight rate intelligence platform – shows the last time Trump ramped up tariffs on China imports during the trade war in 2018, the ocean container shipping markets spiked more than 70%.

On the critical trade from China to the US West Coast, average spot freight rates increased from USD 1 503 per FEU (40ft container) on 1 January 2018 to USD 2 604 per FEU on 1 November 2018.

Peter Sand, Xeneta Chief Analyst, said: “Raising barriers to

trade is almost always a negative move. We saw the cost of shipping goods by ocean spike dramatically when Trump introduced tariffs back in 2018 and his latest proposals will simply be a case of histor y repeating.”

Trump stated during the debate with Kamala Harris that his proposed import tariffs would not result in increased prices for c o n s u m e r s , h o w e v e r S a n d disagrees.

He said: “When ocean container shipping markets increase, that cost gets passed down the line and ultimately it is the end-consumer who pays the price It could be through increased cost of goods on the shelves or a limited choice in the products available.”

Trump’s tariff proposals come at a time when global ocean supply chains are already under immense strain due to conflict in the Red Sea.

This has caused spot rates on the trade from the Far East to US East Coast to increase 303% between

1 December 2023 and 1 July 2024 Spot rates from the Far East to US West increased389%inthesameperiod

Sand said: “Shippers react to supply chain threats by rushing to import as many goods as possible as quickly as they can. Frontloading of imports has contributed to the massive increases in freight rates following the outbreak of conflict in the Red Sea and we will see the same behavior from shippers ahead of any new tariffs coming into force.

“Whether it is trade wars or conflict in the Red Sea, geo-political disruptions are toxic for ocean s u p p l y c h a i n s a n d t h e y a r e happening with a higher frequency than ever before.

“ S h i p p e r s a n d f r e i g h t forwarders dislike uncertainty because it reduces their ability to manage supply chain risk. This is why people who work or operate within the maritime industry embrace global trade and do not want to see tariffs or other barriers introduced.”

The answer to carbon-conscious customers

With the Aurora Class, Höegh Autoliners are raising the demand for ammonia as a viable, zero-carbon maritime fuel.

Höegh Autoliners have already partnered with several of the world’s leading ammonia producers to ensure the supply and usage of green ammonia – these include Yara Clean Ammonia, Norwegian North Ammonia, Sumitomo Corporation and more.

The Aurora Class is equipped with the newest and most modern maritime technology, including state-ofthe-art safety and digitalization solutions.

“We have built yet another Aurora Class vessel at record speeds thanks to the exceptional effort from our employees and partners, whom I sincerely thank. The Aurora Class is the crown jewel of our groundbreaking, industry-transforming green fleet renewal program. These vessels meet the demands of our growing number of carbon-conscious customers seeking emission reductions and sustainable transportation. Together, we will not rest until we achieve net zero operations”, says Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Höegh Autoliners.

Höegh Autoliners expect the delivery of two Aurora Class vessels every six months until H1 2027, taking the total number of Aurora Class vessels to 12.

India-US working together in areas like critical minerals, supply chains and advanced technologies: Piyush Goyal

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal said India and the United States of America (USA) are working together towards becoming selfr e l i a n t i n c r i t i c a l m i n e r a l s , strengthening supply chains and adopting cutting-edge technologies. The Minister stated this while delivering the keynote address at the US-India Business Council’s (USIBC) 49th Annual General Meeting held in New Delhi.

The Minister said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s

Government works on the principle of ‘ R e f o r m - Pe r f o r m -Tr a n s f o r m ’ He emphasized that reforms in the Government will help the country perform and transform the lives of the countr ymen Stressing on the importance of spreading information about reforms in India, he urged the participants present to propagate to the world about the experience they have working with India He said that India and US share one of the most strategic and consequential relationship with shared interests in bilateral and geopolitical issues

Shri Goyal, evoking Swami Vivekananda’s speech delivered in Chicago on this day in 1893, said that the iconic address resonates deeply with the theme of the USIBC Summit of partnership and prosperity in the era of AI and critical technologies. He stated that partnership and prosperity among nations will enable this world to be a better place and continued that Swami Vivekananda’s teachings on universal tolerance, harmony amongst nations and the importance of respecting each other’s culture and history

New Alliance formation intensifies battle between major Shipping Lines

LONDON: With the container shipping alliance landscape expected to change in less than five months, it is worth examining the cur rent dynamics of the alliances and how they are expected to evolve when the new alliances are formed.

Currently, the 2M Alliance, composed of Maersk and MSC, continues to hold the leading position with the largest fleet capacity. Ocean Alliance (including CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen and OOCL) follows closely, while THE Alliance (Hapag Lloyd, HMM, Yang Ming and ONE) remains in third place with significant distance.

Despite the overall increase in fleet size across all alliances, the share percentages reveal a more nuanced picture. Throughout the last five years, the 2M Alliance maintained a relatively stable share, dominating the market. Maersk and MSC are the world’s largest ocean carriers, so their alliance has expectedly outperformed their competitors.

However, Ocean Alliance has achieved to sustain a close distance to 2M, despite experiencing a slight decline in its share between 2022 and 2023.

THE Alliance, on the other hand, faced a small dip in its share from 2021 to 2022 but has since remained stable.

The Shift in Container Shipping Alliances

The container shipping landscape is set to undergo a significant transformation in February 2025, as

new alliances emerge, reshaping the competitive dynamics of global shipping According to Container News, based on fleet size and share data from 2024, the formation of new alliances is expected to create a more competitive environment in the industry

Ocean Alliance, which is the only alliance that will remain the same, will climb to the top spot in terms of fleet size and market share, positioning itself as the leading force in global trade However, the newly formed Gemini Cooperation of Maersk and HapagLloydisanticipatedtobeaclose contender. The two new partners have already announced service network options, which will be effective from Feburary2025

It is imporant to note that MSC, which has entered into some slot exchange agreements but will mainly operate independently with 6,082,623 TEUs, is in a close distance from Gemini. With the Swiss/Italian ocean carrier on a newbuilding spree, it could potentially surpass the overall fleet of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd on its own.

Meanwhile, Premier Alliance, formed by HMM, Yang Ming, and ONE, is expected to rank fourth in terms of fleet size, but the overall competitiveness will remain strong, with fleet expansion and additional partnerships across the board.

When it comes to market share percentage, Ocean Alliance is expected to take the lead, followed by

Gemini Cooperation in second place. MSC will claim the third position on its own, while Premier Alliance rounds out the fourth spot.

This shift in alliances is poised to make the competitive landscape fiercer, particularly between Ocean Alliance, Gemini, and MSC, as the gap between the top players narrows.

The upcoming formation of new container alliances in 2025 marks a pivotal moment for global trade, bringing significant changes in fleet distribution and market share dynamics. Between 2019 and 2024, all the alliances showed a steady fleet growth. Despite some fluctuations, including small declines for THE and Ocean alliances, the competitive landscape remained relatively stable during this period.

However, the formation of new alliances in 2025 is set to intensify competition. Ocean Alliance will take the lead, but the newly formed Gemini Alliance will emerge as a strong c h a l l e n g e r M S C c a n s t a n d independently, with the freedom of movement this provides being a significant advantage Premier Alliance appears to be starting from behind in this race, but additional synergies such as its partnership with MSC, could provide an extra boost.

Overall, the competitive maritime environment in 2025 will be defined by a narrower gap between leading players, ma

dominance more intense than in previous years.

India to impose up to 30% tariffs on some steel imports from China, Vietnam

NEW DELHI: India will impose tariffs of between 12% and 30% on some steel products imported from China and Vietnam in a bid to safeguard and boost local industry, an Indian finance ministry order showed.

Welded stainless steel pipes and tubes exported by China, the world's largest producer of steel, and Vietnam, will be taxed for the next five years, the order from New Delhi issued on Sept 10 showed.

Ties between the world's two most populous nations have been strained since their militaries clashed on their disputed Himalayan border in 2020, prompting New Delhi to tighten scrutiny of Chinese investments and halt major projects.
