AMTOI Eastern Region hosts Seminar in Kolkata
Cont’d. from Pg. 3 & 6
It used to be the best performing state for Industrial and Agricultural produce and the port was biggest and busiest in country However, due to various factors this position was lost and at present the region is struggling compared to the rest of the country He opined that if the East is to rise up and become a bright spot, a lot of new Industries need to be established, agriculture produce must be improved and there must be far greater ease of doing business. In 2022-23 while total merchandise exports of India were US$ 450.96 billion of this only 2.83% was from Bengal with the state’s exports pegged at Rs. 1 lakh crore.
He was, however, optimistic about the future and that SPM Port had improved its position to 5th amongst all Major Ports of the country and that SMPA, Kolkata during 2021-22 registered a 6.95% growth. He further emphasised that the Kolkata Port is poised for great achievements and will continue to pay a pivotal role in the region’s Export Import trade, as it has been doing over 150 years. He informed the house that the state Chief Secretary recently held a meeting with Export Import stakeholders and expressed that Bengal has all the potential to be the next manufacturing hub and double its exports within a decade Shri Santosh Sarangi was in Kolkata and spoke about the DGFT planning to make West Bengal an export hub under the Ministry of Commerce. With the hope of more and more industries coming up the role of port becomes most important for Export Import trade as well as moving domestic cargo to the Northeast using Bangladesh. He urged those involved in multimodal businesses but not members of AMTOI, to join the association.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Xerrxes Master –President AMTOI, spoke about AMTOI being established in 1998, with its head office in Mumbai, being the only Pan India trade body in Shipping & Logistics. It has four Chapters and has over 350 members registered with DG Shipping It also has Associate members like CFS Operators, Tank Container Operators, Ship Owners, Shipping Agents, and Air Freight Operators. Under the banner of AMTOI various councils such as the NVOCC Council, Liquid Logistics Council, Training Program Council and the Women Wing have been formed to aid these segments of the industry The main objectives of the association are to organize MTOs at National levels, to study the issues faced by MTOs and seek resolutions with the appropriate authorities, to promote Multimodal Transport services in domestic and foreign trade, to improve quality of such services while reducing transaction costs, skill development and to promote implementation of the cargo community system.
He also spoke on the regions glorious past and said that it pains AMTOI to see the East slip from its past heights. He was however confident that the with the industrious people of Bengal, infra development and port capacity enhancement projects, that the Ports of Kolkata & Haldia will play a vital role in shaping up a brighter future for the region and our nation.
The Chief Guest Shri Rathendra Raman, IRTS –Chairperson Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (Erstwhile Kolkata Port), spoke at length and gave a presentation explaining the advantages of Kolkata Port. He opined that there are numerous opportunities as the
port enjoys geographical advantage and is best suited for the Eastern Region as it connects not only the neighbouring States, but also the neighbouring Nations. He informed that the Port has turned around and has made a profit to the tune of Rs. 300 crore, and that SMPA handled 58.175 million Tonnes of cargo traffic during 2021-22 (4th highest annual throughput) despite COVID19Pandemicandsevere‘Yaas’cycloneinMay2021 SMPK’s traffic handling was pegged in the 6th position, vis-à-vis other Major Ports of India and SMPA ranked 5th in 2021-22 amongst Indian Major Ports in handling Container TEUs.
He informed the delegates that Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port will see a near 26 per cent ramp-up in capacity over the next seven to eight years, backed by ongoing projects undertaken by the port and others that are in the pipeline. The total capacity is expected to increase to around 110 million tonnes by 2030.
He further outlined the vision & commitment of SMPK regarding port led industrialization and invited organizations to participate in the upcoming GMIS 2023 to take advantage of the best opportunities in Maritime Sector.
Guest of Honour Capt Suji Basu Mazumdar opened his speech by appreciating AMTOI, as a very active body who have been interacting with Govt. of India and Shipping Ministry, to try and resolve the problems of Multi Modal Transport Operators and helping the supply chain.
He then took the enthralled audience back to the Golden era of Shipping, the Breakbulk days. He also spoke about Kolkata and gave a detailed account about joining his first ship at Kolkata in 1961,and that the Port was the biggest in India loading conventional Breakbulk vessels. The Port used to always be full, with at least 40 ships and all the berths being occupied and that there were plenty of buoys and multiple vessels on each buoy. However, as cargo containerization took place, there was a complete global change in the transportation of goods, and this affected the breakbulk vessels as well as warehouses ashore storing the cargoes. This was the point Kolkata Port started to lose its position.
He then reaffirmed that of late the port is performing well, despite the perineal problem of low draft levels, which started after the water sharing accord between India and Bangladesh and resulted in less water coming in and increased silting of the river. He was optimistic about the future with the infra development taking place in the past few years and gave his view on how Haldia started developing and catering to bulk cargoes.
Special Guest His Excellency, Shri Eshor Raj Poudel- Counsel General of Nepal informed the house that Nepal is going to double its imports of fertilizers and all imports shall be using ports at Kolkata / Haldia. However he wondered why SPM Port is losing Nepal bound imports to Vizag as handling there is simplified and hoped sooner than later. Kolkata can also offer better rail connectivity with competitive pricing as Kolkata is near and dear port for imports to Nepal. He further informed that excess hydro power will be exported to India and that will august well for industries in Eastern Region of India.
The seminar was attended by around 150 delegates, f o l l o w e d b y N e t w o r k i n g C o c k t a i l D i n n e r, where delegates freely mingled for networking with each other

Alliances: Asia-Europe reliability gains
COPENHAGEN: To gauge which of the three carrier alliances recorded the fastest post-pandemic recovery in schedule reliability, we pegged their lowest recorded schedule reliability during the pandemic as month “0” and then looked at the change from th at baseline in the months that followed.
This is shown in Figure 1 for Asia-North Europe. In just the 2nd month after dropping to its lowest point, 2M had improved schedule reliability by 20 percentage points, whereas the improvements for Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance were both under 10 percentage points By the 7th month, 2 M a l m o s t r e a c h e d a r e c o v e r y o f 50 percentage points, with the other two alliances lagging severely behind. Ocean Alliance only got to the 45-percentage point mark by the 17th month, with THE Alliance taking 25 months just to get within a hair of the 50 percentage point mark. In short, the schedule reliability recovery rate for 2M was far above the other two alliances.
In fact, on both Asia-Europe trade lanes, 2M has seen rapid improvements in schedule reliability after dropping to its lowest point during the pandemic, however, while they continued on this trajectory on Asia-North Europe (as previously mentioned),
their rate of recovery on Asia-Mediterranean slowed down considerably Ocean Alliance on the other hand, while having a relatively slower rate of improvement on Asia-North Europe, have largely been consistent in schedule reliability improvements in the months after their lowest figure of the pandemic THE Alliance has seen a relatively slower rate of recovery on Asia-North Europe, picking up in recent months, while seeing the opposite trend on Asia-Mediterranean.

India contributing 15% to global GDP: IMF Chief Economist
W A S H I N G T O N D . C : Gita Gopinath, the first Deputy M a n a g i n g D i r e c t o r o f t h e International Monetary Fund, recently said India’s contribution to global GDP is around 15 per cent In an exclusive interview the economist also said India will become the thirdlargest economy by 2027-28, based on current projections
Calling India an “engine of global growth”, Gopinath, however, added that there is a lot more work that needs to be done.
“The more important thing is to maintain a high growth momentum for
many more years in just the next four or five years. And that will require structural reforms. India is a large country, so in per capita terms, that will still be a small number even if we’re the third largest economy So India needs to keep pushing on that front to keep the growth momentum going much more,”saidtheeconomist
She added that the expected growth rate of the country for the current fiscal year is over six per cent. According to the economist, the two factors which are driving the growth are public investment and resilient consumption spending.
ON STRUCTURAL REFORMS
Gopinath stressed the need to attract private investment to increase the levels of per capita income and to get to continued high levels of growth. In order to enable an environment for private investment, it is imperative that the investment in public infrastructure continues, she added.
The economist said only four Indian states Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Delhi — g e t a l a r g e c h u n k o f f o r e i g n direct investment and added, “A lot has to be done at the level of state Governments.”

Early use of this system was seemingly for the purchase of discounted oil from sanction-hit Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. India imposes Anti-dumping duty on some Chinese steel for 5 years: Govt order
NEW DELHI: The Finance Ministry of India on Monday imposed an anti-dumping duty on some Chinese steel for a period of five years, according to the official gazette of the Ministry
Earlier, on September 4 of this year, India’s steel secretary, Nagendra Nath Sinha, said New Delhi was monitoring the steel imports situation after the steel industry raised concerns over potential dumping by Chinese sellers.
“Evidence of export price indicates that the Chinese exporters are exporting the goods to third countries at significantly dumped and injurious prices,” said the Finance Ministry’s gazette on the reason behind this order of imposing anti-dumping duty
During April-July, China was the second biggest steel exporter to India, after South Korea, selling 0.6 million metric tons, up 62% from the same period
a year earlier. In all, India imported 2 million metric tons of finished steel in the period, the highest since 2020 and up 23%fromayearearlier
China, the world’s top steel producer, exported mostly cold- rolled coil or sheets to India.
Indian government has already imposed anti-dumping duty on several products to tackle cheap imports from various countries, including China.

JBS Academy celebrates Teachers’ Day on 5th September 2023
AHMEDABAD: Celebrating the Teachers’ Day on 5th September 2023 senior professional faculty members while appreciating the efforts of the Academy at creating a well-trained and skilled cadre for the Logistics sector mentioned that continued efforts towards this end will surely help in promoting professionalism in the sector which hitherto has been relationship driven.
Passionate about the objective the Institute needs to make vigorous efforts towards attracting maximum youth as still Logistics sector does not have the desired awareness inspite of the immense employment and employability potential. In reality Logistics is always in demand as movement of goods never stops and is never affected by the recessionary trends and is always on the look for trained manpower.
Institutional awareness campaigns and targeting the aspiring youth at their door steps will be a great help and create the desired impact and have a win-win s
n g f o r t h e Government schemes and Government Institutions is welcome, the Academy should also focus more on commercially viable training programmes, where private institutions can play a major role.
Reacting to the suggestions of the faculty members Shri Samir J. Shah, Chief Mentor and Director observed that the suggestions of the faculty members for widening the spectrum of activities of the Academy will be considered in today’s spirit.
Container Lines rapidly expand connections out of South India as Trade volumes grow
CHENNAI: With more call additions, Kattupalli and Ennore have already made sizeable inroads into the Chennai market. Kattupalli saw 58,046 TEUs last month, while Ennore handled 59,985 TEUs.
But the concentration of calls at private box terminals operated by Adani Group, which act as alternatives to Chennai Port, is becoming increasingly evident.
HMM has cemented its network with direct sailings out of Adani Kattupalli Port (AKPPL). Its FIM [Far East Asia-India-Mediterranean] service is a major boon for southern India shippers traditionally tethered to transshipment over Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port for mainline connections.
The FIM rotation is Busan, Kwangyang, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Singapore, Port Klang, Kattupalli, Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Karachi, Jeddah, (Suez Canal), Damietta, Piraeus, Genoa, Valencia, Barcelona, Piraeus, Damietta, (Suez Canal), Jeddah, Karachi, Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Kattupalli, Singapore, Da Chan Bay and back to Busan.
In addition, CMA CGM has opened a new string out of Adani Ennore Container Terminal (AECTPL) for North Europe and the Mediterranean. The NEMO [North Europe-Mediterranean-Oceania] Service rotates Ennore, Colombo, Malta, Valencia, London Gateway, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Fos Sur Mer, La Spezia, Malta, Pointe Des Galets, Port Louis, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Singapore and Ennore.
“This new call will offer our customers a fast export connection from the main commercial area in South East India to Europe together with a direct import connection
from Australia and Singapore,” said CMA CGM in a customer advisory, announcing the Ennore call.
The carrier further noted, “Ennore is also a natural gateway from/to ICD [inland container depot] Bangalore covered with an efficient rail connectivity and will provide a best-in-class service to the fast-growing automotive industry.”
The NEMO competes directly with Maersk’s ME7 Service, connecting South India trade via Ennore to North Europe.
The ME7 port rotation is Ennore, Colombo, Salalah, Algeciras, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Jeddah, Salalah, Colombo and Ennore.
With more call additions, Kattupalli and Ennore have already made sizeable inroads into the Chennai market. According to available data, Kattupalli saw 58,046 TEUs last month, while Ennore handled 59,985 TEUs. The growing shift of volumes to emerging port locations poses challenges for box terminals at Chennai Port, putting further investment in capacity development there at risk.
