Considering the growing importance of cargo movement by sea, the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has initiated steps to develop non-major ports in the State, Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan informed the Assembly
The government has already set up berths and cranes required for cargo transportation at the Kollam, Beypore, Azhikkal, and Vizhinjam ports.
A sum of Rs. 11.8 crore has been sanctioned for increasing the draft of the Beypore port and the Harbour E n g i n e e r i n g d e p a r t m e n t w i l l coordinate the work. In the first phase, the draft will be increased to 5.5 metres and subsequently to eight metres.
A 101-metre-long berth has been
constructed at the Kollam port under the Central Government’s Sagarmala project The construction of the administrative block and gate complex is being completed for Kollam to get the integrated check-post (ICP) status, says the Minister Central agencies have assessed the infrastructure development work. The ICP process will be completed after getting the necessary approval of the Central Government.
In addition to the existing cranes in Kollam, it has been decided to procure stand-by cranes. The Centre for Management Studies has been entrusted to conduct a preliminary study for the construction of a multipurpose berth at the Ponnani port. A
detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared based on its report.
In addition, security arrangements and ancillary facilities are being arranged at the minor ports to obtain the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code.
Steps are being taken to deepen the shipping channel at the Azhikkal port. A coastal shipping ser vice was operational until recently, connecting the Kollam, Azhikkal, and Beypore ports However, the service was d

NEW DELHI: As the country’s Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, 64, is set to become the first Finance Minister to present seven consecutive Budgets — six full and one interim and will surpass Morarji Desai on this.
Sitharaman has had a remarkable journey so far First inducted into the Modi government in 2014 as minister of state with independent charge of commerce and minister of state for finance and corporate affairs, she was elevated to cabinet rank in 2017 as Defence Minister. In the second stint of t h e M o d i g o v e r n m e n t i n 2 0 1 9 , she became the first full-time woman finance minister in India.
As finance minister she steered the economy through the once in a century pandemic, largely by taking supply-side measures.
It was during Covid that the Budget size increased from 12.2 per cent of GDP in FY19 to 17.7 per cent in FY21. Capex rose fivefold in the last 10 years without comprising fiscal consolidation This has raised the prospects of a sovereign rating upgrade in next two years, after the recent outlook upgrade to “positive” from “stable” by S&P Global Ratings.
A Jawaharlal Nehru University alumna, Sitharaman led the country in the G20 discussions, bringing to the table for the very first time issues
related to cryptocurrencies as well as the much-needed reforms in the multilateral development banks. In 2019, as she took the reins of the ministry, Sitharaman announced a cut in base corporate tax to 22 per cent from 30 per cent for existing companies and to 15 per cent for certain new manufacturing companies. The aim was to free corporate cash to push jobs and private capex. Big companies have now availed of more deductions and incentives or have shifted to the new lower tax regime, but it has not resulted in a commensurate increase in private capex Ensuring that government capex crowds in private investment will be one of her challenges.

NAVI MUMBAI:
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) will aim to handle 7 million TEU of cargo in FY25, up from 6.42 million TEU in FY24, Mr. Unmesh Wagh, IRS, Chairman, JNPA, was recently quoted as saying.
Mr Wagh added that export cargo traffic from India has already picked up after falling
in FY24 and freight rates will only stabilise further despite the ongoing conflict in Israel.
He also said that Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the country’s busiest seaport by container traffic handled located in Navi Mumbai and administered by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, will have a capacity of 10 million TEUs by April 2025, and will likely handle cargo to its full enhanced capacity by 2029.

MUMBAI: ICRA expects the domestic commercial vehicle (CV) industry’s uptrend to be arrested in FY2025, with a decline of 4-7 percent in wholesale volumes.
This follows a muted YoY growth of 1 and 3 percent for wholesale and retail sales, respectively, in FY2024. The healthy growth witnessed in H1 FY2024 tapered due to a slower Q4 FY2024, which saw a decline of 4 percent in wholesale volumes due to factors such as implementation of the Model Code of Conduct and perceived slowdown in infrastructure activities ahead of General Elections.
K i n j a l S h a h , S e n i o r V i c e President & Co-Group Head, ICRA Ratings: “FY2022 and FY2023 had witnessed a very sharp growth in volume as well as tonnage terms, enlarging the base. The domestic CV volume growth momentum slowed down in FY2024 and is expected to dip in FY2025 amid the transient moderation in economic activity in some sectors in the backdrop of the General Elections. The replacement demand would nevertheless remain healthy (primarily due to the ageing fleet) and is expected to support CV volumes in the near to medium term. The long-term growth drivers for the
domestic CV industry remain intact,
(evidenced by an increase in the interim budgetary allocation), a steady increase in mining activities, a n d t h e i m p r o v e m e n t i n roads/highway connectivity.”
ICRA expects the operating profit margins (OPM) of the domestic CV OEMs to contract marginally in FY2025 to 8.5 percent-9.5 percent on the back of lower volumes and higher competitive pricing pressures The OPM is estimated to have improved by 250-300 bps in FY2024, as the industry volumes were at a fiveyear high. In ad
n, lower discounting by the OEMs and benign commodity prices aided in the margin expansion in FY2024. Going forward, capex and investments for the industry are likely to increase to Rs. 59 billion in FY2025 against Rs.37 billion in FY2024. These will be mainly towards product development, t e c h n o l o g y u p g r a d a t i o n a n d maintenance-related capex.
Among the various sub-segments within the CV industry, the medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCV) (trucks) volumes in FY2025 are expected to contract by 4-
7 percent YoY, given the high base effect and the impact of the General E l e c t i o n s o n i n f r a s t r u c t u r e activities in the first few months The segment closed FY2024 at 4 percent YoY growth, supported by the i m p r o v e d m a c r o e c o n o m i c environment and the consequent higher freight availability in the early m o n t h s o f t h e f i s c a l , w h i c h compensated for the muted demand seen in the latter months
Within this segment, while the haulage sub-segment reported a 6 percent YoY volume contraction in FY2024, volumes for tipper subsegment remained flattish for the year on a YoY basis. The tractortrailers sub-segment, on the other hand, reported a robust 19 percent YoY volume growth in Fy2024. Domestic light commercial vehicles (LCV) (trucks) wholesale volumes are likely to decline by 5-8 percent in FY2025 due to factors such as a high base effect, sustained slowdown in e-commerce, and c a n n i b a l i s a t i o n f r o m e 3 W s . The segment witnessed a mild decline of 3 percent on a YoY basis in FY2024, owing to the above factors in addition to a deficit rainfall impacting the rural economy

NEW DELHI: India’s landlocked Northeast is set to get a crucial connectivity link to the Bay of Bengal with the opening of the long-awaited Bangladesh-India friendship bridge, known as Maitri Setu, by September
The bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina virtually in March 2021.
Modi and Hasina had a brief interaction at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Sunday night after the swearing-in ceremony of Modi 3 0 Hasina is expected to return for an official visit later in June or July

Maitri Setu connects Bangladesh with Tripura giving northeastern states access to ports in Bay of Bengal. The bridge was built over the Feni river which flows between Bangladesh and Tripura. The 1.9-kmlong bridge connects Ramgarh in Bangladesh with Sabroom in India. It was built by National Highways and I
Corporation Ltd at a project cost of Rs. 133 crore.
Cargo movement through the bridge is seen as strategically i
h ’ s Chittagong port is just 80km from Tripura’s Sabroom.
“The Maitri Setu has already been inaugurated. The land port is almost ready… The movement of passengers through the bridge will commence in
September. It will take two or three months to introduce goods movement after passenger movement gets underway,” Tripura industries and commerce department secretary Kiran Gitte said at a press conference in Agartala recently.
Meanwhile, India will also assist in the transit of electricity from Bhutan to Bangladesh Hasina reiterated Bangladesh’s eagerness to import hydroelectricity from Bhutan through India when the visiting Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay paid a courtesy call on her in New Delhi recently
“Import of hydroelectricity will require a tripartite agreement involving India, and we have already brought the matter to their (India’s) attention,” she told Tobgay
NEW YORK: India, despite a projected slowdown this year, will continue to be the world’s fastestgrowing large economy, according to the World Bank‘s latest Global Economic Prospects report.
The world’s most populous nation is forecast to expand 6.6% this year, down from 8.2% in 2023, on the back of strong domestic demand and a surge in investment. India’s growth is propelling South Asia to be the fastest-growing region, the World Bank said in the report published Tuesday.
Global economic growth will hold steady at 2 6% in 2024 after three straight years of decline, in what appears to be a “final approach for a ‘soft landing.'” But overall risks facing the world’s economy are tilted toward the negative.
The East Asia and Pacific region — which includes China, South Korea, ASEAN nations and Pacific island nations — is expected to slow to 4% this year from 4.2%. China’s growth rate is
projected to drop to 4.8% from 5.2%.
China’s ongoing property sector slump, weak retail sales and poor business sentiment are hurting investment as policy uncertainty both domestically and internationally scares off investors. A worse than expected downturn in China could spill over into global commodity price volatility should Chinese demand for energy and other commodities weaken. Economies with strong trade ties to China could be especially vulnerable.
Indonesia and Vietnam will be bright spots among major economies in the region with growth projections at 5% and 5.5%, respectively
Among advanced economies, Japan’s sluggish consumption growth, slowing exports and a stabilizing tourism sector are set to cause its economy to grow at 0.7% in 2024 compared to 1 9% last year Though stable, the projected growth remains well below levels in the decade before the pandemic and “insufficient” for
reaching key worldwide development goals, the World Bank said.
In the U.S., November’s presidential election has the potential to escalate geopolitical tensions, fragment trade, and hamper Asia-Pacific economies. The global lender said the protectionist trade policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump could be an issue should he win the race.
“U S companies appear to be shifting some operations from China to other countries This trend may accelerate as the expectations of swift resolutions of trade tensions have d e c l i n e d o v e r t h e p a s t y e a r, ” World Bank Deputy Chief Economist Ayhan Kose said “Recent trade tensions have led to shifts in trade patterns and trade flows.”
The U.S. will be the standout advanced economy as it is projected to hold steady at 2 5% growth for the second year in a row in 2024, with a chance of stronger than expected growth.

NEW DELHI: Piyush Goyal who took charge as the Minister of Commerce and Industry for the second term recently reviewed the s t a t u s o f v a r i o u s f r e e t r a d e agreements that India is negotiating and the 100-day agenda of the Ministry
Along with Goyal, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada also assumed charge and participated in the review meeting with the top officials of Department of Commerce (DoC) and Department for Promotion of Industry and internal Trade (DPIIT).
When the election process was on, a team of Indian officials had visited London in April for another leg of talks on agreement for negotiations on outstanding issues With the
European Union a stock taking meeting was held in May Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal and D i r e c t o r G e n e r a l o f E U h a d participated in those discussions.
While with the UK, the 14th round of negotiations was in progress, With the EU the eighth round of talks are scheduled from 24th of this month in Brussels.
In May the first Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) under India-Australia Economic Co-operation and Trade Agreement (Ind-Aus ECTA) was held. Both sides are now negotiating on expanding ECTA and converting it into a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.
In April India and Peru had a 7th round of discussions on the FTA and an eighth round of talks are expected
to be held in July Last month a Joint Committee meeting was also held for the review of the Asean-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITGA).
Officials of DoC and DPIIT have been working on the 100-day agenda when the election process was on and secretaries of DoC and DPIIT made a presentation on it, a statement said.
Goyal directed that a series of meetings must be scheduled in the coming days to delve into the details of various policies and action items that have to be finalised. He also said t h e S t e e r i n g C o m m i t t e e o n
Advancing Local value-add and Exports (SCALE) Committee and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes must be utilised to their full potential to boost exports and domestic production.
MUMBAI: India is among a group of seven nations participating in the ‘Maritime Fuel Supply Dialogues’ focusing on advancing clean fuel supply development across Asia Pacific and Africa to support regional maritime decarbonisation.
The ‘Maritime Fuel Supply Dialogues’ – launched by the LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub –aims to unlock the potential for clean and sustainable maritime fuels and to foster a thriving blue economy The initiative focuses on how to drive regional fuel supply development at s c a l e t o s u p p o r t m a r i t i m e decarbonisation across the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
The initiative was launched at a recent roundtable meeting of energy and transport ministries across Asia Pacific and Africa hosted by the Ocean Stewardship Coalition of the United Nations Global Compact along with LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub.
B y f o s t e r i n g d i a l o g u e a n d collaboration across all stakeholders, the ‘Dialogues’ aim to create synergies that deliver wider benefits. This holistic approach will unlock new e c
a sustainable future.
“There are great opportunities for countries to build and upscale hydrogen-based maritime fuel production infrastructure This roundtable is representative of the efforts that both the energy and transport sectors need to make to achieve our common goals I am
devoted to supporting shipping’s net
e n i o Dominguez, Secretary General, I n t e r n a t i o n a l M a r i t i m e Organisation, said while highlighting the importance of a proactive and full value chain approach in his keynote address.
“We should also be proactive and embrace the opportunities that this transition offers. New fuels and new modes of propulsion will be on the table,” he added.
The first roundtable meeting of the ‘Maritime Fuel Supply Dialogues’ was attended by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, India, Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Kenya, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Namibia, Ministry of Works & Transport, Namibia, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information
Te c h n o l o g y, O m a n , M a r i t i m e Industry Authority, Department of Transportation, Philippines, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Republic of Korea and Ministry of Transport, Singapore.
During the first meeting of the “Dialogues’, participating ministries identified strong potential and appetite for regional collaboration where countries and ports play diverse and complementary roles as fuel exporters, bunkering hubs, and regional demand centres in the transition Significant hydrogen production opportunities and growing demand for clean fuels in the region will deliver opportunities to develop mutually beneficial supply chains and unlock economies of scale, also
according to a statement.
The participating ministries sought that emerging maritime demand centres and untapped market opportunities are supported by global regulatory and industry signals that indicate growing appetite for hydrogen-based fuels across sectors, particularly with the ramp up in green corridors and clusters in the region.
Sharing best practices and exploring regional frameworks gained support as a means of helping policy makers create effective signals to mobilise finance across the region.
The meeting emphasised that an enabling environment for achieving scale can be achieved through clear policies, collaborative frameworks, and risksharing mechanisms, going beyond pilot projects. Policy and financing levers and structures were key areas of interest, which the ‘Dialogues’ will seek to explore and develop further. Development of standards and capacity building were also considered important enablers
Private and public stakeholder engagement will be at the heart of these ‘Dialogues’ going forward, leveraging the expertise across fuel supply networks and the maritime communities and existing consortia aligned to support effective policies and investments that enable fuel supply development to support maritime decarbonisation at scale.
T h e n e x t m e e t i n g o f t h e ‘Dialogues’ will be held in September, as a precursor to COP29 dialogues.
