MUMBAI : Reducing logistics and supply chain cost should be a key focus area for the Government, Mr. Makarand Prabhakar Pradhan, Managing Director, Total Transport Systems Limited commented as his wish list from ensuing Budget 2023. “Building rail, road, inland waterways connectivity and efficient cargo handling capacity should be given priority. Container freight stations should be developed in and around the port and operated by the Government to ensure that the import, export and transhipmentcargoesarehandledefficiently.
A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) has announced a new organisational structure and a new executive leadership team. The changes are effective 1 February, 2023 and followtheappointmentof VincentClercasCEO ofA.P.Moller-Maerskeffective1January,2023.

executed well during the past years & we have a highly engaged and competent global team ready for the next miles of our transformation. We face a challenging global economic outlook, a softening market and at the same time our customers are looking to radically improve their supply chains to makethemmoreresilientandagile.

The Government should encourage more transactions in INR and thereby reducing our dependency on USD. It will have favourable impact on exchange rate of INR-USD and will reduce on Crude oil bill, resulting in reduced fiscaldeficit.”
Secondly, “the freight levels have dropped drastically in the last quarter of 2022 as the export-import trade was greatlyaffectedglobally.ManyoftheEuropeancountries, UK, USA and South - Central America, experienced all time high inflation and hence their spending power is
affected. China is going through a huge surge in covid cases and hence their manufacturing is greatly affected. India heavily depends on China for the supply of raw materials, finished and semi-finished goods & hence Indian industry will also be affected. The positive side is that Indian manufacturers and exporters will have an opportunitytofillupthisgapandexplorenewmarkets.
“The reduced demand/high freight rates created enormous pressure on liquidity of all companies. However, in last two years, the Logistics Industry has facedtheCovidsituationsuccessfullyandwiththefreight rates going down drastically, the logistics industry is preparedtotakeupnewchallenges.”

This creates urgent needs as well as unique opportunities. To navigate through and beyond this environment, we will intensify our focus on cost discipline and service quality while increasing customer centricity, and decision power in the front line. Hence, I am very pleased to announce our new Executive Leadership Team. This team includes leaders with a long tenure within Maersk, and leaders with experience from outside the company, bringing increased diversity of thought, age, gender and nationality. Together with the team, I look very much forward to continuing our strong momentum into the next phase of our strategy and I am excited to get to work in the new structure and together with all Maersk colleagues accelerate our business transformation,” said Vincent Clerc, CEO ofA.P.Moller–Maersk.

MUMBAIHAMBURG - Container xChange released the Container LogTech predictions report for 2023 which highlights important global trends that the shipping and supply chain industry will witness in 2023. The report draws attention to some of the most pertinent issues that industry will witness this year thereby helping professionals to preparebetterfornavigation.
“Theoveralloutlookfortheyear2023 for the supply chain industry remains challenging. Europe is hit hard with alltime high inflation; China struggles to copewiththevirusandtheUScontinues to witness hinterland transportation challenges and labour unrest. Most of these challenges will stay in 2023. Consumer confidence will pick up, but it really depends on whether we witness more disruptions in the coming times.” said Christian Roeloffs, cofounder and CEO, Container xChange, an online containerlogisticsplatform.
Mostoftheexpertssurveyedforesee that inflation and recession will have a greater impact this year and will be the biggestdriverofdisruptions.
‘‘Due to inflation increasing, there’ll be more unrest in the labour market which willcertainly leadtomorestrikes, specifically inEurope, theUKandNorth America. And as we have seen before, strikes result in slow operations within the port which can exacer-bate supply
issues.’’ said Aamir S. Mir, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Caspian Container Company SA as part of the interviews.
Talking of rates, the report further predicts that the Long-term shipping contract rates will see an uptick in 2023, though gradually. This slow increase applies to all modes of transport. With negotiations going on to bring contract rates in line with spot rates, a reset is expected. On the other hand, until there isabalancereachedbetweensupplyand demand, forwarders will favour shortterm con-tracts until the rates stabilize. “Freight forwarders will employ a ‘wait and see’ approach before making any long-term air cargo ca-pacity commitments particularly.” the report claims.
Trucking rates for both dry and reefer cargos will continue to drop in 2023. Freight tonnage will continue to contract as market con-ditions and volumes return to pre-pandemic numbers.
The unresolved worker strikes of 2022 will spill over in 2023. Furthermore, thechancesofnewstrikescomingupare high due to inflation-related rise in prices putting pressure on workers’ disposable incomes. Labor dissatisfaction might grow in European and North American economies. In that case, it will cause disruptions in global
supplychains.
‘‘Two,almostthreeexceptionalyears for carriers are definitely coming to an end. They will have to adapt back to lower margins due to a different supply and demand balance. Many customers, forced into high-cost contracts during the up-cycle, will come for re-venge in the down cycle. And regulatory pressures, following excessive profits mightappearontopofthat, beitthrough bodies likeFMC,EUorChina’s MOC,as they each reviewing alliance exemptions, newtaxationregulations,or precedence cases from several complaints raised by shippers at different institutions.’’ said Ruben Huber,FounderandDirector,OceanX.
The report further covers the growing expectation of 3PL (third party logistics) market to solidify in 2023. Reportedly, it’s projected to reach $1,789.74 billion by 2027. Another key trend on the list is around the digital transformation of the industry. In the years to come, the adoption of digital technologies in shipping will focus on vessel schedules, intuitive booking interfaces, instant slot book-ing, and capacity confirmations. In this regard, the industry’s major concern will be on having systems interact directly via automat-ing the DataAnalysis-Decision-Actioncycle.
KATHMANDU -Theconstruction ofa Rs3.2 billion access road on the Indian side that links the proposed Dodhara Chandanidryport onthewesternborder withIndiahasstarted.

MUMBAI - The credit worthiness outlook for countries in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, including that of India, for 2023 is stable as compared to the negativeoutlookforsovereignsglobally, Moody'sInvestorsServicesaid.
Thedebtsustainabilityandfinancial stability are relatively well anchored in the region, with contained government liquidity risks, broadly stable debt dynamics and generally sound external positions, the credit rating agency said inareport.
Gross domestic product (GDP) growth will stabilise close to potential levels and outperform other regions, despite higher global inflation and tighter financial conditions, it said, while adding that most sovereigns have begun fiscal consolidation, but social pressures are slowing progress.
Moody's expects output gaps to continue for India, which is in postpandemic recovery mode.
The debt affordability has been
anchored in India, Malaysia and Thailand as they have a large institutional investor base and banking systems, IANS cited from the ratingagency'sreport.
According to the report, elevated commodities prices will keep spending on food and fuel subsidies or other measures high, with little impetus to reduce support, particularly for economies with elections approaching in 2023 or early 2024,includingBangladeshandIndia.

NEW DELHI - Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran said that the Indian economy will be USD 3 trillion by the end of the current 2022-23 fiscal and is expected to be USD 7 trillion in the next seven years. The government had previously said India wouldbecomeaUSD5trillion economy by2025.
Speaking at a session organised by MCCI, Nageswaran said virtually that the calendar year 2023 began in the context of the continuing conflict betweenRussiaandUkraine, whichwill "create geo-political and geo-economic
uncertainties".
The other major aspect is the opening up of China after two years of the pandemic and its impact on the world economy, particularly on retreatingoilandcommoditypricesand also on the growth of the advanced economiesoftheUSandEurope.
"In these contexts, the Indian economy will be of the size of USD 3 trillion at the end of March 2023 and USD 7 trillion in the next seven years, which is not impossible," Nageswaran said.

important issue is that the US is expected to lower its interest rates in 2024 or 2025, which will have an impactontheIndianrupee.
The National Statistical Office has predicted that the economic growth of the country in 2022-23 will be seven per cent in real terms and 15.4 per cent in nominal ones, the economist said.
Nageswaran also mentioned that the realistic medium-term growth is 6.5percentincontrasttoeightornine per cent, which was witnessed during the2003-2008period.

SEOUL:TheCEOofHMM,KimKyung-Baepointedout in his New Year’s message that South Korea’s flagship carrier will build eco-friendly ships and acquire more containerterminalstosecureitsfuturegrowth.
Addressing the ongoing decline in container freight rates, Kim said, “We must strengthen pre-emptive crisis management. It is said that there’s no sky without rain. Companies cannot always have clear skies. However, the current crisis is due to external factors that have not been seen for decades, as seen in the sharp fluctuations in the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), so it’s difficulttopredictandevenhardertocontrol.
“We must focus all our capabilities on securing the foundation for future growth. The container division must focus on securing eco-friendly fleets and infrastructure such as terminals and logistics facilities, while the bulk division must continue generating profits through stable fleet portfolio formation, strategic shippers and high-profit cargo development. In particular, since investment is the first condition for overcoming the recession and achieving sustainable growth, we should pay close attention to even the slightest possibility this year and devote all our energy tonewinvestmentsanddevelopingnewgrowthengines.”
By 2026, HMM targets to expand its fleet to 1.2 million TEU. In July 2022, HMM ordered three 1,800 TEU ships from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for delivery in 2024 & in 2021,
contracted six 13,000 TEU vessels each atHyundaiHeavyIndustries&Daewoo Shipbuilding&MarineEngineering, for delivery in 2023. Last month, HMM reportedly sought quotations from major South Korean shipbuilders, with plans to order nine 8,000 TEU methanol-poweredcontainerships.
Kim also touched on HMM’s environmental, socialandgovernance(ESG)ratings.
He stated, “In terms of environmental regulation, it is necessary to keep pace by establishing an eco-friendly logistics system such as the systematic management of carbon emission targets, low-carbon ships and new fuels. In terms of society, we need to spread the value of win-win cooperation both inside and outside the company, going beyond customers, to suppliers, and even social contributionactivities.”
Kim alluded to the need to develop human resources, two years after HMM’s management resolved a remuneration dispute with staff. He noted, “Our company has come through numerous crises over the past 46 years. This year, many difficulties are expected to come close to past crises. However, we are confident that we will overcome the crisis and achieve meaningful growth if we strivetobecomeatop-tiercompany.”
