KOLKATA : Rathendra Raman, a 1995 batch Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer, took over as the new Chairman of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkataon9thMay.

He previously served as the

Chief Freight Traffic Manager (CFTM) in the South Eastern Railway, the SMP saidinastatement.

OOCL launches AI chatbot for customers

HONG KONG: OOCL has introduced an AI chatbot known as “Fin” on its OOCL.com, My OOCL Center, and Freightsmartplatforms.

The chatbot enables customers to ask about various subjects, such as shipment schedules, FreightSmart

product information, Cargo Tracking and more. It is initially available in simplified Chinese with development ofanEnglishversionunderwayaccordingtothecompany.

The Fin chatbot is powered by Alibaba Cloud. Hong Kong-listed OOCL is part of China’s Cosco ShippingGroup.

China’s slacking imports, slowing exports peril Global economic recovery

BEIJING: Chinese imports plunged and export growth slowed down in April as the recovery waned, raising concerns about the country’s ability to boost the global economy.

Overseas shipments expanded 8.5 percent from a year earlier to $295 billion, the customs administration said in Beijing — slowing from the double-digit gain in March. Imports, though, dropped 7.9 percent to $205 billion, much worse than the median projection of a 0.2 percent decline. That left a trade surplus of $90 billion forthemonth.

The unexpected import plunge spells trouble for economies that had been expecting China’s emergence from Covid Zero to fuel their own export growth. The recovery so far has mainly been driven by consumer spending, rather than infrastructure and property investment. That’s reduced demand for commodities

such as crude oil, iron ore and copper — imports of which dropped in April fromthepriormonth.

“Neighboring countries such as Japan and South Korea are disappointed as they had expected positive effects from China’s reopening on their economy,” said Ding Shuang, Chief Economist for Greater China and North Asia at StandardCharteredPlc.

Exports were aided by a favourable comparison with this time last year when Shanghai was in lockdowns. Economists caution that rising prices and interest rates in the rest of the world, high inventory levels, and the war in Ukraine will serve as brakes on global consumer demand — meaning any increase won’tlastforever.

China’s strong exports “can’t last if the US is weakening and Europe’s economy is kind of flat”, said Iris Pang, Chief Economist for Greater

ChinaatINGGroepNVinHongKong.

The dropoff in imports also suggests there is more reason for worry about the sustainability of China’srebound.

“Imports were quite disappointing, and would add concernstoChina’sdemandrecovery story,” said Xiaojia Zhi, Chief China Economist at Credit Agricole CIB in HongKong.

Shesuggestedthatthepricedrops in import items including energy products may be dragging on the headline figure. Tech imports contracted due to the global slowdown in electronics demand and therelocationofsupplychains.

“Don’t be fooled by headline export figures from China that show shipmentsgrowinginAprilcompared with last year, when the figures were depressed by pandemic lockdowns. Therealpictureismuchweaker,”said BloombergeconomistDavidQu.

K Line revenue up 24.5% in 2022

TOKYO: K Line’s annual report for the year to March 31, 2023 showed a 24.5% increase in operating revenue to JPY942,606m and and 8.2% increase in profit to JPY694,904m for the financialyear.

For its dry bulk business, 2022 began with a tight supply/demand balance due to ongoing COVID congestion, a situation that eased during the year bringing rates lower. China’s zero-COVID policy weighed on China-bound demand over the same period,saidKLine.

“Towards the end of the year, market rates increased due to the expectations for the recovery of demand for steel through the economic stimulus package implemented after the end of [the-zero COVID] policy,” the company’s earnings release said.

The dry bulk story was different in the medium and smaller vessel segment, with declining rates early in the year as port congestion eased in China, India’s coal demand slipped and Europe took less steelproducts.

“However, the market stayed generally firm as well as the Cape-size sector after January this year. Under these circumstances, the Group strived to manage the market exposures appropriately and reduce operation costs and improve vessel operationefficiency,”saidKLine.

For the financial year, the Dry Bulk Segment recorded a 12.9% increase in revenue but profit fell by9.0%.

In its forecast for the dry bulk segment, K Line listed negatives for the sector including inflation, highinterestrates,fearsofrecessionandthewarin Ukraine, but said that despite all that: “the market is expected to stay firm due to the tightening of the vessel supply-demand balance against the backdrop of the recovery of economic activities in Chinaandlimitedbuildingofnewships.”

Foritscarcarrierbusiness,KLinesaidcarsales in 2022 were affected by the war in Ukraine and semiconductor shortages impacting parts production, but post-pandemic recovery continued. The outlook for car carriers was positive, as shipments were expected to rise with greater supply of parts. Risks to the segment were seen as similar to those in dry bulk, with geopolitical and global economic pressures holding the potential to limitconsumerdemand.

India Post becomes Logistics partner for crores of traders

NEW DELHI : India Post signed an MoU with Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and Tripta Technologiesinthepresenceof Minister of State for Communications, Shri Devusinh Chauhan here on 9th May, 2023. The MoU facilitates operationalisation of a portal called ‘Bharat EMart’, which will provide the facility of pick-up of consignments from the premises of traders and will ensure delivery at the doorsteps of the consignees across the country. Technology induction and addition of new services have made India Post a modern and multiple service providers. Today, it provides banking, insurance, and the last mile deliveryofbenefitsofseveralwelfareschemesrunby

the Government to every village through its network of1.59lakhPostOffices.

Land Ports Authority plays key role in India’s trade relations with South Asian nations: Amit Shah

KOLKATA: Union Home Minister AmitShahsaidonTuesday,9thMaythat the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), a wing under the Ministry of Home Affairs, was not only helping the nation’s economic growth but also acting as the country’s ambassador for friendship and fraternity with neighbouringcountries.

While inaugurating a number of projects of LPAI and Border Security Force at the Petrapole land port in North 24-Parganas, including laying the foundation stone of the second cargo gate titled “Maitri Dwar”, Shah said: “Bharat ka maitri ki sandesh ka rajdoot hai land ports authority (Land Ports Authority is the friendship ambassador

forIndia).”

He, however, used the occasion to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to provide the LPAI with “a new momentum, direction as well as dimension” to take forward India’s trade relations with South Asian countries and “develop warm bonds” with neighbouring countries.

Shah also used the opportunity to reassert India’s strong bond with Bangladesh and credited Modi for the improvement in the bilateral relationshipbetweenthetwonations.

Shah said: “We share a great bond with Bangladesh because of linkages of culture, language, art, and tradition. Nobody can break the bond between

India and Bangladesh. The two countrieshaveasharedculture…(and) India has played a key role in Bangladesh’shistory.”

Lauding Modi’s endeavour and his government’s border policy, Shah said: “A new border policy formulated by our Prime Minister has strengthened the country’sconnectionandtraderelations withallSouthAsiancountries.”

Shah listed the important steps the Centre had taken towards improving border infrastructure, bilateral trade, people-to-people connectivity, and village development. This, he said, had been done to improve bilateral relationships with neighbouring countries.

Adani Ports to pay off $130 million in debt early to boost investor confidence

AHMEDABAD : Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), a group company of the Adani Group said onTuesdaythatitwouldpay$130million ofitsdebtearly.Thecompanyhasshared plans to payoff $413 million worth of debt beforetime.Thismoveisexpectedtowin back investor confidence. Adani stocks were severely hit in an aftershock of the Hindenburgreport.

Thecompany,lastmonthdiscloseda buyback programme of certain debt securities to partly prepay near-term debt maturities. The company had floated a tender of up to $130 million of 3.375 per cent dollar-denominated bondslastmonthsettomaturein2024.

In a note shared by the company, AdaniPortsandSpecialEconomicZone (APSEZ) has stated: “APSEZ’s contribution to government revenue has increased considerably in recent

years. In FY21, customs receipts from cargo routed through the company’s ports and inland container depots stood at Rs 41,110 crore. This figure grew to Rs 60,945 crore in FY22 and reached Rs 80,732 crore in the year just ended. The steady growth in customs receipts underscores the company’s expanding role in India’s maritime sector and its ability to generate significant revenue for the government. Further, APSEZ has also made substantial rail freight payments to the Indian Railways. Over the last two years, the company’s rail freight payments have more than doubled, reaching Rs 14,034 crore in FY23. In FY21, APSEZ made payments of Rs 5,927 cr to the Indian Railways, which increased to Rs 8,573 cr in FY22. The increase in rail freight payments not only supports the Indian Railways but also contributes to the overall

development of the nation’s infrastructure.”

It adds, “In FY23, the company’s payments amounted to Rs 906 crore on this front, which is a 1.5 time increase compared to the amount paid in FY21 of Rs 622. In FY22, this figure stood at Rs 807 cr. The company’s growth in cargohandlingcapacityalsoplaysarole in its contribution to the government’s revenue. In FY23, APSEZ handled 339 million tonnes of cargo, representing an 8.6 per cent year-onyear increase and a 37 per cent rise compared to FY21. APSEZ has also been steadily expanding the number of vessels handled which has increased from 6485 in FY21 to 8538 in FY23.Furthermore, APSEZ has paid nearlyRs33croreaslandleasecharges to respective maritime boards in FY23, upfromRs26crinFY21.”

All Major Ports to have Green Tugs by 2025

NEW DELHI: The programme was announced in late March by India’s Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) Ayush Shri Sarbananda SonowaI while inaugurating India’s first National Centre of Excellence in Green Port & Shipping (NCoEGPS) in Gurugram, Haryana.

The country’s major shipbuilder CochinShipyardLimited(CSL)Kochiis already making significant progress in the construction of environmentally friendly ships, propelled by fuel cells andhydrogen.

According to the Minister, the programme will start with green hybrid tugs which will be powered by green hybrid propulsion systems and subsequently adopt non-fossil fuel solutions like methanol, ammonia and hydrogen.

Thetargethasbeensetfortheinitial green tugs to start working in all major portsby2025.Atleast,50%ofallthetugs are likely to be converted into green tugs by 2030, helping the country considerably reduce emissions as it moves towards achieving sustainable development.

The National Centre of Excellence in Green Port & Shipping is expected to serve as a hub for collaboration, bringing together experts, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to drive regulatory framework, sustainable practices and acceleratethegrowthofgreenshippingin thecountry.

Making India’s ports and shipping more environmentally friendly is seen as an important part of the country’s questtobecomecarbon-neutralby2070.

The effort is part of Maritime Vision Document 2030, released by Prime

Minister Shri Narendra Mod, a ten-year blueprint for India’s vision of a sustainable maritime sector and vibrantblueeconomy.

The PM Gati Shakti – National Master Plan for Multi-Modal ConnectivityalongwiththeGreenPorts initiative has already accelerated the development of green logistics supply chain in the country. The country’s ports aim to cut carbon emissions pertonofcargohandledby30%by2030.

What is more, India has been selected as the first country under the IMO Green Voyage 2050 project to conduct a pilot project related to green shipping. The Ministry has already identifiedParadipPort,DeendayalPort, and V.O. Chidambaram Port to be developed as hydrogen hubs – capable of handling, storing, and generating greenhydrogenby2030.

Manufacturers’ Association of Israel signs

MoU with CII eyeing boost in trade

NEW DELHI: The Manufacturers’ Association of Israel (MAI) concluded a cooperation agreement with the leading business body–ConfederationofIndianIndustry (CII) – eyeing a boost in trade between India and Israel in fear of the shrinking globaleconomy.

MAI signed an MoU with CII, a representativebusinessorganisationof 9,000 direct members. The MoU’s primary aim is to facilitate through cooperation between the business organisations, a significant increase in the volume of trade between the two countries, which currently stands at 8.5 billion.

MAI Ron Tomer signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with CII President Rakesh Bharti Mittal, to promote cooperation and create cross-border business opportunitiesbetweenthecountries.

The primary objective of this agreement is to significantly increase the volume of trade between the two nations, which currently stands at USD 8.5billion.Theagreementwassignedin the presence of Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, India’s Water Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Israel’s Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon.

This agreement holds tremendous significance for the commercial relations between the two countries,

considering that CII is not only India’s leading and most prominent business body but also represents over 9,000 Indian companies across the nation, accordingtoastatementfromCII.

Additionally, it encompasses an additional 300,000 subsidiary members through regional branches, collectively employing millions of individuals throughoutthecountry.

Furthermore, the importance of the relationship between MAI and CII is projected to expand even further, as India’s population has surpassed China’s this year for the first time in accordance to official UN data, making India the most populous economic power globally, according to the statement.

FICCI & Business Council of Canada announce Partnership to connect business leaders

TORONTO: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the Business Council of Canada (BCC) today announced a new partnership to connect business leaders from both countries, promote bilateral economic ties, and enhance co-operation as partners in the Indo-Pacific region. The announcement was made at the conclusion of an India-Canada business leaders' dialogue that was held with Canadian Trade Minister Ms Mary Ng and Indian Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Minister Mr PiyushGoyal.

"India's bilateral relationship with Canada holds great potential especially

in areas like energy, science, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure development," said FICCIPresidentMrSubhrakantPanda. "Iamconfidentthatourpartnershipwill not only bolster business-to-business ties between the two countries but also lift the trajectory of bilateral trade," he added.

The two organizations used the occasion to call on both governments to continue to work on an Early Progress Trade Agreement with the goal of successfully concluding negotiations by the end of the year. In addition, they announced that a Canadian delegation of CEOs will travel to New Delhi for meetingswithIndianbusinessleaders.

"At a time of global volatility, it is crucial for democracies to work

together to create jobs, secure supply chains and drive economic growth that sustains our quality of life and benefits all people," said BCC President & CEO Mr Goldy Hyder. "A trade agreement would not only send the right signal to businessesinbothcountriestoincrease tradeandinvestment,butitwouldmark an important milestone in Canada's recently released Indo-Pacific Strategy."

The total bilateral trade between India and Canada amounted to US$ 6.8 bnforFY2021-22.CanadaexportedUS$ 3.1 bn worth of products to India and imported US$ 3.7 bn worth of products from India. In addition, Canadian portfolio and institutional investment into India is currently valued at CA$ 70 billion(US$51.7billion).

India aims to become a global hub for green shipbuilding by 2030 and is launching a Green Tug Transion Programme as part of the strategy.

Sarbananda Sonowal receives 1st Indian Cargo Ship at the Sittwe Port

NEW DELHI : Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH Shri Sarbananda Sonowal and Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport & CommunicationsAdmiralTinAungSan,oftheRepublicofthe Union of Myanmar jointly inaugurated the Sittwe Port in Rakhine State, Myanmar yesterday, on 9th May 2023. During thiseventtheyreceivedthefirstIndianCargoshipwhichwas flaggedofffromSyamaPrasadMookerjeePort,Kolkata.

The project envisages highway / road transport from MizoramtoPaletwa(Myanmar),thereafterfromPaletwato Sittwe (Myanmar) by Inland Water Transport (IWT) and from Sittwe to any port in India by maritime shipping. The project comprises of following segments (Index map is alsoenclosed):

The operationalisation of Sittwe Port would enhance bilateral andregional trade aswellascontribute to the local economy of Rakhine State of Myanmar. The greater connectivity provided by the Port will lead to employment opportunitiesandenhancedgrowthprospectsintheregion.

In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways highlighted the close historical, cultural and economic ties between India and Myanmar, particularly the Rakhine State of Myanmar. He reiterated India’s longstanding commitment towards the development and prosperity of people of Myanmar throughdevelopmentalinitiativessuchastheSittwePort.

This project was conceptualized to provide an alternative connectivity of Mizoram with Haldia / Kolkata / any Indian ports through Kaladan River in Myanmar.

Sittwe Port has been developed as a part of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) funded under grant in aid assistance from Government of India. Once fully operationalized the waterway and road componentsofKMTTPwilllinktheEastcoastofIndiatothe North-easternstatesthroughtheSittweport.

MUMBAI: JSW Infrastructure, the ports business of the JSW Group has filed the DRHP for its initial public offering with SEBI on 9th May 2023. The Ports business of Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group plans to raise upto Rs 2,800 crore through the IPOroute.Thecompanyplanstodeploythesefundstoretire itsdebtaswellastofunditscapacityexpansionprojects.

JSW Infrastructure has emerged as the fastest growing port-related infrastructure company in terms of growth in installedcargohandlingcapacityandcargovolumeshandled during Fiscal 2020 to Fiscal 2022, and the second largest commercial port operator in India in terms of cargo handling capacity in Fiscal 2022”. As at December 31, 2022, JSW Infrastructure has an installed cargo handling capacity of153.43milliontonnesperannumformulti-commoditycargo including dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk, gases and containers. JSW Infrastructure’s port business operations have expanded from one Port Concession at Mormugao in Goa that was acquired by the JSW Group in 2002 and commencedoperationsin2004,toninePortConcessionsasof December 31, 2022 across India, making it a well-diversified maritime ports company.
