In its weekly newsletter Alphaliner said that MSC was reported to have purchased six vesselsinrecentdays.

The latest acquisitions bring the total capacity acquired on the secondhand market by MSC in recent years to 1.2m TEU a figure which alone would be equivalent to the world’s eighth largest container line sat between Ocean Network Express (ONE) with a 1.53m TEUs capacity fleet and HMM with a 816,000 TEUs capacityfleet.

The latest acquisitions are reported to include the 8,144 Maersk Surabaya, and the 5,570 Maersk Yamuna;the5,364TEUsvesselsEver Unific and Ever Uberty; the 4,506 TEUs Co Nagoya; and the 4,045 Pohorje.

Alphaliner highlighted the purchase of the 1999-built pair of vessels from Evergreen which had beenexpectedtobesoldforscrap.

“There was a time when Evergreen would only sell their used tonnage for demolition, or sell them andcharterthemback, toavoidgiving them to competitors. However, the companyhassincechangeditsstance onthis, itseems,”thenewslettersaid.

Asof5AprilAlphalinersaidMSC’s fleet consists of 743 vessels on the water with an aggregate capacity of 4.84m teu, an 18.2% share of total market capacity. The container line has a major newbuilding programme with a further 127 ships with a combined capacity of 1.7m TEUs on order, equivalent to 35.1% of its currentfleet.

The newbuilding programme combined with MSC’s continued secondhand spree will cement its position as by far the largest container line going forward. It looks set to go it alone on the major trades from 2025 when the 2M Alliance with Maerskcomestoanend.

Bangladesh to make e-seal and lock mandatory for transit goods from India

CHITTAGONG:Bangladeshisset to make use of the electronic seal and lock mandatory for the transit and transhipment of goods from India in a bid to ensure full-proof security during movement between the countries.

Under the agreement for the use of the Chattogram and Mongla ports (ACMP) signed in 2018, neighbouring India has completed four shipments of transit goods as per the Standard Operatingprocedure(SOP).

Customs officials said now the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is working on the issuance of a permanent order under which transit goods could be moved from India to Bangladeshundertheagreement.

As per “Electronic Seal and Lock Service Rule-2018”, the Government can charge fees for transit goods shipment. A senior NBR official said the rules would be amended, incorporating the provision of etracker as per the demand of the businesses.

Currently, the rule is optional for all businesses but it might be made mandatory for transit goods movement, hesaid.

However, the customs could not implement the rules for four pilot shipments of transit goods as the government could not appoint any electronic lock and seal supplying company as per the NBR statutory regulatoryorder(SRO)inthisregard.

India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Matlub Ahmad said the use of electronic seal and lock would be welcomed by everyone if the government could offer a subsidised pricefortheservice.

“Cost of availing electronic lock and seal services is too high in the rule whichkeptitshelvedforyears.Itshould be affordable like [a] normal seal and locktofacilitatebusinesses,”hesaid.

It’s a tracker, nothing else, but it’s very useful and should be implementedimmediately, headded.

The electronic lock could be used domesticallytootochecktheftincase of apparel goods export process, he added.

Sea-Intelligence reports US$15 billion drop in Box Lines 2022 last quarter earnings

COPENHAGEN:Eventhoughthe shipping lines recorded 2022-FY Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) of US$138 billion, minus CMA CGM, PIL, and MSC, there were visible indications of a weakening market, according to SeaIntelligence.

Thiswasconfirmedbythe2022-Q4 financial and volume data published bytheoceancarriers.

Whilealloftheshippinglineshave remained profitable in 2022-Q4, there was a significant disparity between the larger and smaller shipping lines, with none of them able to grow their

EBIT,” commented Alan Murphy, CEOofSea-Intelligence.

In fact, five shipping lines recorded year to year EBIT decline of US$1-2 billion, and three carriers recorded an EBIT decline of over US$2 billion. In fact, year to year, the combined EBIT decline was a staggering-46%.

“Thisisalsoquiteevidentwhenwe look at EBIT/TEU,” added Murphy. Whilethelargestcarriersmanagedto maintain EBIT/TEU levels close to those of 2021-Q4, the smaller lines were not able to repeat the windfalls seenayearearlier.

On average, the carriers recorded EBIT/TEU of US$843/TEU in 2022Q4, down 33% from 2021-Q4’s US$1,252/TEU, but still vastly above the just US$17.6/TEU on average in 2010-2019.

To add to that, there has been a strongyear-to-yearvolumedeclineon both Transpacific and Asia-Europe, whereas on a global level, apart from HMM, the remaining reporting carriers have all recorded varying degreesofvolumecontraction.

In the case of HMM, they have disruptedthemarkettosomeextentwith an8%growthinvolumeyeartoyear.

FIATA HQ Meeting: Decarbonisation, Transport Corridors and Multimodality key outcomes

SWITZERLAND:FIATAHQMeeting 2023, was attended by over 190 participants, from almost 60 countries. The interactive nature of this year’s Meeting enabled members to actively participate in sessions, workshops and group discussions, which enriched the Meeting considerably. At this year’s Meeting, there were many important outcomes which will direct the work of the FIATA HQ Team in the coming months and year. FIATA’s Advisory Bodies and Institutes will be incorporating feedback from members into their work agendas, and continuing their work to improve member services, advocacyinthefreightforwardingsector and staying on the front line of the sector anditsupdates.

Opening Session

FIATA President Ivan Petrov opened the FIATA HQ Meeting officially with a warm welcome to all members, sharing FIATA’s key priorities for 2023, and aims of navigating uncertainty at this year’s FIATAHQMeeting.

Jan Hoffmann, Head of Trade Logistics at UNCTAD, provided a keynotespeech, presentinganoutlookon tradeandlogistics.

Henotedthatinthepast, theindustry spent more money on inventory holding thantransport, butnowitspendstwiceas much on transport than inventory holding, and not because transporting is more expensive. Dr Hoffmann gave an analysis of the evolution of cargo shipping, noting that the size of ships has increased, and that fewer companies are servingtheglobalsupplychainwiththeir services due to this, and larger shipping companies vertically integrating. He also shared results of economic research showing the supply-demand curve evolutionoverthelastyears.Itwasnoted that the cost of transport would have to change a lot before a change in supplydemand would be seen. Freight rates have increased since 2021, but the cost of charteringshipshasgoneupevenmore.

In closing polls, participants were asked to give their opinions on whether they anticipated business growth, stability or decline in 2023, the slight majority (36%) anticipate growth, with 32% for each respectively expecting business stability, and business slowdown. When asked to comment on this, President Petrov shared that he believes positive business growth comes throughlucktothosewhoarebrave.

On a second poll question, 68% of participants expect to keep their business size stable in 2023, with 24% reporting business workforce growth, and just 8% expecting to cut their staff numbers. Dr Hoffmann shared insights on the coming automation of many jobs, commenting that this will actually bring positive change for employment figures, with more jobs gained through technologicalprogress.PresidentPetrov,

with the forwarder’s perspective, commented that he does not expect a need for a reduction in workforce size at this present time for forwarding businesses, nor a growth, as forwarders learn to navigate changes to the global supply chain and the need to make a profitintimesofhighinflationrates.

In a final poll, the HQ Meeting participants were asked to rank their anticipated main challenges for the year 2023. Inflation was ranked as number one, followed by competition, economic evolution, digitalisation, compliance, regulation and decarbonisation. Dr Hoffmann shared of his surprise at the low ranking of decarbonisation considering the current global situation with calls for net-zero and IMO goals of 40% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030, but it became clear in discussion that freight forwarders, who have very little say in global decision-making, are not yet affected by changing government regulation. James Corbett (role) of the World Shipping Council, asked forwarders to consider re-thinking, and preparing themselves for the change, so as to not be punished at a later stage. Dr Hoffmann concluded: “Delaying the change is more costly than the change itself”.

‘Addressing challenges for multimodal transport’

In this first HQ Meeting session, Roel Janssens of the UNECE shared the accomplishments of the work of the Commission’s Inland Transport Committee, which has worked to identify strategic road and rail corridors between Europe and Asia. 9 corridors were prioritised for development from 20052020, and successfully reduced transport time from 36 days in 2006 to 16 days and lessnow.

SharingonbehalfoftheUIC,Philipvan den Bosch noted the Union’s work on coalition building and its ongoing market watch. He emphasised that railfreight has a limited market share, and that there is a great need for public AND private contribution to the set-up of corridors withincountries, andmoreintermodality.

From a more regional perspective, Murat Seitnepesov of the Greater Caspian Association shared on the significant growth of the Middle Corridor inthewakeoftheUkraine-Russiawar.He shared that border crossing has become challenging, costs have increased, and there is no customs union to adminstrate the problems. There is also a lack of digitalisation in the area, leading to furtherissues.

JensHügeloftheIRUhighlightedthe driver workforce shortage, noting a 2.6 milliondrivershortageworldwide.Young people are particularly missing from the workforce, and it is the IRU’s message that the industry is made more attractive not only to young people but also women. Mr Hügel shared the proposition of reducing the legal minimum truck driver age to 18, which currently stands at 21 yearsold,inordertocatchschool-leavers before they begin to make decisions to

enter other apprenticeships and education. FIATA echoes the importance to make the industry more attractive and particlarly to improve treatment of drivers, who often experience poor workingconditions.

The participants of the workshop broke into four groups with different focuses to address regional issues and challenges, as well as opportunities for forwarders transporting in the respective regions. Region Africa & Middle East discussions raised the point that in Africa, there is a surplus of young drivers, andinresponse,MTIChairMark Bromley suggested that discussions should be opened with governments of countries with a lack of drivers. The Europe-Asia corridor group addressed the significant increase in the use of the Middle Corridor, and the importance of improving the resources of this area with the higher demand for its services. Region Americas focused on the improvement of the Latin American transportcorridors, anddrivershortages were addressed in finer detail by a group ledbyJensHügelandMarkBromley. ‘Sustainability at what cost?’

The final session of the day was a panel discussion entitled ‘Sustainability at what cost?’. With the aim of demystifyingtheapproachofactorsfrom thecommodities, bunkeringandshipping sectors who will drive the energy transition, FIATA brought together stakeholders from across the supply chain. The panel, moderated by Ms AndreaTang(MTIManager),comprised: commodity industry veteran and biofuels expert Mr Pedro Nonay, Dr James Corbett (World Shipping Council – WSC), Mr Tyler Baron (Minerva Bunkering), and Mr Jens Roemer (FIATA Senior Vice PresidentandWorkingGroupSeaChair).

The panel explored the nature of new fuel options and their preliminary assessment, including methanol, biofuels, ammonia and LNG, their scalabilityandtheinfrastructurethatwill beneededtosupporttheirbunkering.

Advances in the shipping sector were noted, and whilst freight forwarders are not directly implementing these new fuel options in vessels, it was noted that all stakeholders will be impacted by the new technologies, andcollaborationisneeded toachievetheambitiousclimatetargets.

Polls from the audience showed that cost and resistance to change were primary challenges, while Mr Roemer noted that customer requests for emissions calculators and options for carbon offsets or more sustainable fuel optionswillbeakeydriver.

Speakers reiterated Jan Hoffmann’s apt quote from the FIATA Opening Ceremony: “Delaying the change is more costly than the change itself”, noting the context of pressing climate goals. Mr Roemer highlighted FIATA’s work to provide forwarders with the necessary information to be prepared, and the necessary tools to enable sufficient options for forwarders to offer their customers, includingcarbonoffsetoptions.

A.P. Moller - Maersk expands warehouse offering for its customers in UK

LIVERPOOL:A.P.Moller-Maersk(Maersk) further expands its network of warehouses across the UK. In addition to warehouses in Doncaster, in Tamworth and in Kettering, Maersk has signed a lease for a 685,000 sq ft (approx.63,000sqm)facilityatSEGROLogistics ParkEastMidlandsGateway.

The newly built facility will be completed in June2023andispartofa700-acredevelopment by the UK based real estate company SEGRO. The logistics park features UK’s only inland freeport as well as a 50-acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) providing it with direct rail links to the seaports of Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton. This will significantly speed-up cargo flows, and will also reduce on-road freight mileage and hence emissions from hinterland transport. The warehouse itself is constructed to meet low or very low GHG emissions standards for both embodied and operational emissions. It will incorporate a full roof mounted PV array and extensive use of recycled construction materials. Provisions will also be made for the operation of a fully electricfleetofHGVvehicles.Maerskislookingtoutilise a fleet of EV trucks that will manage not only all internal traffic between the rail terminal, the warehouse and the depot, but also final deliveries of cargo in close proximity totheLogisticsPark.

“The East Midlands Gateway campus is very much the perfect blueprint for optimising connectivity and flexibility within supply chains. Not only is it ideally positioned in the UK, but the vast infrastructure and cutting-edge technology across the site means operations on UK shores can be done from one place in themostsustainablewaypossible. It’stheepitomeoftwo of Maersk’s key visions for the future: integrating
