2024 : UNCTAD
• Developing economies face slower trade growth, but high-growth sectors like informa on and communica on technology (ICT) and apparel offer opportuni es for diversifica on and resilience.
• Stable global growth and easing infla on create a window for developing economies to strengthen their trade posi on amid rising geopoli cal uncertain es.
GENEVA: Global trade is set to reach a record $33 trillion in 2024, according to the latest Global Trade Update published by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on 5 December
This $1 trillion increase, reflecting 3 3% annual growth, highlights resilience in global trade despite persistent challenges.
R o b u s t g r o w t h i n services trade, up 7% for the year, accounted for half of the expansion, while goods trade rose 2% but remained below its 2022 peak.
o f g l o b a l t r a d e , f a c e d headwinds in 2024, with imports contracting 1% and South-South trade falling by the same margin in the third quarter
In contrast, developed economies led Q3 growth, with stable demand driving a 3% rise in imports and 2% in exports.
D e s p i t e t h e s e c h a l l e n g e s , opportunities remain for developing
economies to capitalize on highgrowth sectors.
ICT and apparel trade surged, with increases of 13% and 14%, respectively, in the third quarter 2024. This growth underscores the potential for diversification
a n d e n t r y i n t o v a l u e - a d d e d industries
Stable global growth forecasts and easing inflation also present a chance
to build resilience in 2025. Sectoral pressures and growth prospects
While ICT and apparel showed strong momentum, traditional sectors critical to developing economies faced declines.
Energy trade fell 2% for the quarter and 7% for the year, while metals trade contracted by 3% both quarterly and annually.
Automotive trade dropped 3% in Q3 but is expected to end the year with modest 4% growth.
A call for strategic action
U N C T A D u r g e s developing economies to adopt targeted policies that enhance trade diversification and invest in high-value sectors to mitigate risks.
The organization underscores that trade is a cornerstone of s u s t a i n a b l e d e v e l o p m e n t To capitalize on opportunities in 2 0 2 5 , d e v e l o p i n g e c o n o m i e s require coordinated support to navig ate unce rtainty, re duce dependencies and strengthen global market links.
MOL switch to invest in Heirloom, a U.S. DAC Technology Developer
Contributing to Spread and Expansion of Negative Emissions
TOKYO: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & C E O : T a k e s h i Hashimoto) has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary MOL Switch LLC (Representative & CEO: Tomoaki Ichida; Headquarters: California, U.S.), which aims to invest in decarbonization technologies, became the first Japanese company to participate in Heirloom Carbon Technologies, Inc. (Heirloom; Representative & CEO: Shashank Samala; Headquarters: California, U.S.) , a developer of Direct Air Capture technology MOL, along with Mitsubishi Corporation invested through a simple agreement for future equity (SAFE) in July 2023. In addition, Heirloom recently completed a $150 million financing, along with several Japanese companies, including Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd.
Heirloom is the world's leading U.S. developer of DAC, a technology that removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere Unlike conventional amine methods,
NYK obtains
Heirloom's DAC technology uses limestone, the second most abundant and inexpensive mineral in the world, as a raw material, reducing the costs of the technology Heirloom's "Cypress" project is in development in the U.S. state of Louisiana, and has received a grant of up to US$600 million from the U.S. Department of Energy The project's goal is to remove about 1 million tons of CO2 per year from the atmosphere.
Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design concept for Long-Distance Subsea Cable-Laying Vessel
TOKYO: NYK has recently obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for the design concept of a cable-laying v e s s e l ( " t h e v e s s e l " ) f o r t h e construction of a long-distance subsea direct current (“DC”) transmission network in Japan.
Since suitable locations for wind-power generation, such as Hokkaido, are far from areas of major electricity demand, developing a power transmission network is crucial to increase the amount of electricity generated in the future. One promising solution to this issue is the construction of a long-distance subsea DC transmission network using cable-laying vessels
As part of a four-company consortium with Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd (‘Sumitomo Electric’), Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (‘Furukawa Electric’), and
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., NYK has been participating in the "Development of c o n s t r u c t i
e installation of cable protecting system, etc. and the development of new cablelaying vessels, etc.” of "Research and Development of a Multi-purpose and Multi-terminal HIGH Voltage Direct Current Transmission System (RIGHT Project)", projects subsidized by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
Cooperating withSumitomo Electric, NYK isdeveloping the basic technology for cable-laying vessels that will contribute to the development of a domestic DC subsea transmission network and we have now obtained the AiP fromClassNKwiththecooperationofFurukawaElectric.
We will continue contributing to realizing a decarbonized society by optimizing the vessel's design.

Commerce Ministry ready to extend hybrid model for IT units in SEZs by at least 2 years
NEW DELHI: The Commerce & Industry Ministry has recommended an extension of two years or more to the hybrid working model of IT-ITeS units operating in SEZs beyond the y e a r- e n d w h e n t h e o n e - y e a r extension given last year is set to lapse, sources said.
The hybrid model allows IT-ITeS units to permit their employees to work from any place outside the SEZ as long as the unit is physically operating in the zone.
“The Commerce & Industry Ministry is ready to extend the hybrid model for more than a year, possibly two-five years. A decision has been taken on the matter,” a source tracking the matter said. T
Directorate General of Exports Promotion (DGEP), an arm of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, will be sought for the extension following which the Commerce Department will come up with the required notification, the source added.
Industry body Nasscom had earlier recommended a shift from the work-from-home model to a hybrid one to ensure that SEZ units continued to operate from the SEZs and real estate developers did not lose out on their business. At the same time units, too, would have the flexibility of allowing their workers to work from outside the zone adding to
overall efficiency.
While the IT-ITeS industry wants to be allowed to continue with the hybrid model in perpetuity, the government is not willing to provide the flexibility without an end date.
“Covid-19 created a situation where employees were forced to work from home. But it is long over now and IT companies such as Amazon and TCS are stressing the importance of work
T
e government understands that some more time may be needed for all workers to start operating from office and is ready to allow the hybrid model for a longer period. But there doesn’t seem to be a need to extend it perpetually,” the source said.
NTPC plans to sell green methanol for fuelling its ships with Maersk
NEW DELHI: NTPC Green Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of India’s largest power generation utility is in talks with global shipping major A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S to sell green methanol for its ships, said two people in the know of the developments
This comes in the backdrop of tightening of marine fuel standards globally including the European Union’s Fuel Maritime Regulation that calls for a 2% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity by 2025 and an 80% reduction by 2050 Green methanol is created by combining
green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide.
“Talks have been underway for sometime now with some potential off-takers. Maersk is key among them. Discussions are in the initial stage and yet to be finalized,” said one of the two people mentioned above.
Tariffs under rst Trump term hurt US rms, NY Fed analysis says
NEW YORK: Import tariffs during President-elect Donald Trump’s first term broadly lowered stock values on the day they were unveiled, and were associated with lower future profits, sales and employment for the firms whose equity prices were hit the hardest, new analysis by Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff concluded.
Firms exposed to trade with China in particular, about half of publicly listed companies, saw bigger stock market losses on days when import tariffs were announced during 2018 and 2019, and over the ensuing two years saw profits, for example, that were about 13% lower than others.
“One key motivation for imposing tariffs on imported goods is to protect U.S. firms from foreign competition. By taxing imports, domestic prices become relatively cheaper, and Americans switch expenditure from foreign goods to domestic goods,”
New York Fed economists including Mary Amiti, head of labor and product market studies in the bank’s research group, wrote in the analysis But “most firms suffered large valuation losses on tariff-announcement days. We also document that these financial l

The paper adds to other research estimating that tariffs present a drag
policymakers, companies and economic researchers try to gauge what lies ahead as Trump vows to ratchet import duties even higher in his second term Trump and his advisers see the tariffs as a way to raise revenue for the federal government, though the question of how the cost of import levies is spread across producers, importers and consumers is a thorny one.
Benefits from tariffs are hard to
come by, the New York Fed’s research team concluded, “because global supply chains are complex and foreign countries retaliate Our results show that firms experienced large losses in expected cash flows and real outcomes These losses were broadbased, with firms exposed to China experiencingthelargestlosses ”
The analysis builds on a prior study by the same research team that e s t i m a t e d t h e f i r s t Tr u m p administration’s trade war made firms and households worse off by a factor of around 3%.
While Trump doesn’t take office until Jan 20, economists at the Fed and in the private sector are racing to try to frame in broad terms what the fallout ofnewroundsoftariffsmightbe.
T r u m p f o r e x a m p l e h a s threatened levies as high as 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, with another 10% on top of what is already imposed on Chinese goods.

Indian Railways developing Vande Bharat parcel trains for quick e-commerce shipping
NEW DELHI : Indian Railways is working on an express parcel delivery service – tentatively named as Vande Bharat Parcel Service – targeting niche products, e-commerce shipping items that include apparels, mobile phones, other lighte-weight cargo and perishable to quick-commerces, a senior official awareofthediscussionstold.
Prototype and designing of these special coaches – which need to carry smaller cargo of lower volumes – are under works.
“Coach designing is under-way at ICF and one other facility These will soon be presented to the Railway Board for clearances, post which construction of coaches will commence,” the official said.
These trains are being designed targeting e-commerce cargo, specially items like apparels, mobile phones and
so on which now-a-days are being pushed under “one day delivery” or “express delivery” options. Quick commerce items like smaller white goods and so on can also be pushed.
Plans are afoot to take up some perishable items, including flowers, with reefer containers being considered for transport.
Routes on which these high speed parcel trains can run, include ones likes the Delhi – Mumbai route – to be covered in an estimated span of 10 hours; and the Delhi – Chennai route – to be covered in anestimatedspanof24hours
“We will decide on the routes as and when the plans firm up,” the official said.
Initial plans indicate that these trains will have speeds of 160 – 180 kmph, be made on the existing Vande Bharat platforms; and at least three
different coach sizes – of 8 metres. 11 metres and 13 metres – are being designed.
Each of the Vande Bharat Parcel express trains will have 16 coaches –single storey ones.
“We could also explore 8 – 12 coach set-ups, but the ideal plan is to have a 16 ( c o a c h ) * 1 6 ( t o n n e c a r g o ) configuration,” the official said.
The coaches will be lighter and smaller in size than the standard 25 metre ones to accommodate quicker loading of specialised cargo. It will also have retractable roller floor system with locking facilities for easy handling of pallets. Payload of these vehicles are expected at 264 tonnes.
The idea is to ensure completion of loading a 7-8 minute time frame, much faster than the normal cargo loading time in case of container cargoes.
