MARSEILLE: The CMA CGM Group has granted a put option to the Bolloré Group to sell the transport and logistics operationsofBolloréLogisticsonMay8th.

The put option was granted at the end of the period of exclusive discussions announced on April 18. Bolloré Group has accepted the proposal as a put option. Final completion of the transaction remains subject, first, to the examination by employee representation, and then to customary regulatoryapprovals.

NEW DELHI: The national security advisors of India, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, as well as Saudi crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman, convened in Riyadh on Sunday, May 7, and discussed ways to have a West Asia which is more “interconnected” with the Indian subcontinent.

The combined operations of the CMA CGM Group’s logistics activities and Bolloré Logistics would have combined revenues of approximately USD24 billion (based on 2022 results). Following the acquisitions of Ingram Micro Commerce & Lifecycle Services and Colis Privé, then of GEFCO, which boosted CEVA’s capabilities in eCommerce contract logistics and automotive logistics respectively, the acquisition of Bolloré Logistics would further strengthen the sea and air freight activities of the Group’s logistics division The combined entity would have an annual shipping volume equivalent to more than 2 million TEUs of seafreightand0.8milliontonsofairfreight.

TheCMACGMGroupalreadyoperatesinmorethan160 countries,with155,000employees.Thisdealwouldaddmore than 14,000 new employees operating out of 350 offices in 63 differentcountries.

DP World and CMA CGM form joint venture to operate Chile Container Depot

S A N A N T O N I O : DP World and CMA CGM have created a new company ChileInlandServices(CIS),a joint venture to operate a container depot and bonded storage facility 10 km from the PortofSanAntonio.

In April, CIS began its first phase of operations, consisting of a five-hectare facility providing maintenance, repair, and specialised refrigeration services for maritime containers. By the end of 2023, CIS services will expand to 11 hectares and will include additional container storage space,asecurecustomsareaforfullcontainerstorageanda bonded warehouse for cargo consolidation and deconsolidation.

DNV forecasts oil demand in transport sector to half by 2050

OSLO: Electricity is continuing to gain traction in previously thought to be hard-to-electrify sectors including heavy trucking and aviation. Electricity’s share in transport will grow from 1% today to 23% in 2050, according to DNV’s latest Transport in Transitionreport.

DNV’s Transport in Transition report is a deep dive into the energy transition of transport – the most dynamic of the energy demand sectors through to 2050. The report draws on DNV’s system dynamics-based Energy Transition Outlook model and explores thevastchangesinfuels,electricityand infrastructure needed to transport

ever-larger numbers of people and volumes of freight while at the same timedecarbonizingthesector.

Despite oil demand in the transport sector forecast to half by 2050, the present pace of the transition still falls severely short of the goals of the Paris Agreement.Opportunitiestoaccelerate change through pilot projects and uptake of alternative energy need to be seized as soon as possible. Today, transport of passengers and goods accounts for about a quarter of global energy-related CO2 emissions, a share thatwillgrowto30%by2050.

Road transport leads the way in reducingrelianceoffossilfuels,fallingfrom

38millionbarrelsperday(bpd)today,to19 million bpd in 2050, reducing share from 91%to57%.Conversely,theconsumptionof oil within aviation will be virtually flat to 2050, with hydrocarbons set to have a 60% shareinthesectorinthesameyear.

Driven by the decarbonization push, the fuel mix in the maritime sector will also change significantly over the coming decades. By 2050, it will likely transition from being almost entirely oil-basedtoanenergymixcomprisingof 50% low- and zero-carbon fuels, 19% natural gas and 18% biomass. Electricity will obtain only a 4% share, from short sea shipping and port stays forlargervessels.

Global freight shows signs of bottoming out

DENMARK: Global freight volumes fell at some of the fastest rates for three decades earlier this year, but at the end of the first quarter showed signs of bottomingout.

Volumes were down by -2.1% between December and February compared with the same period a year earlier, according to the Netherlands Bureau of Economic Policy Analysis. The rate of decline was in the 8th percentile for all overlapping threemonthperiodssince1992;volumeshave only fallen this fast during the last three recessionsin2020,2008/09and2001/02.

Reflecting the global slowdown, the U.S. rail network hauled 1.06 million containers in February, the lowest for the time of year since 2015 and before that 2012, data from the Association of AmericanRailroadsshowed.

Globalfreighthasbeenhitbyexcess inventories held all along the supply chain as consumer and business spending has reverted from merchandise to services after the pandemic.

Persistent inflation, rising interest rates and increased fears about an impending recession have also encouraged households and firms to be morecautiousaboutspending.

But the most recent data, albeit only covering a small number of transport hubs, shows freight volumes may have stabilisedorimprovedattheveryendof thefirstquarter.

The port of Singapore’s container throughput climbed to a record high of 3.34 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)inMarch.

In China, freight movements climbed to a seasonal record of 2,022 billion ton-kilometres in March, as industries returned to production after disruptions caused by lockdowns and thepandemic’sexitwave.

At London’s Heathrow airport, cargo was down more than 9% in March compared with the same month a year earlier,butvolumeshavesteadiedsince thefourthquarter.

In the United States, the number of shipping containers handled through

the nine biggest ports was down 22% in Marchcomparedwithayearearlier,but was broadly in line with the pre-pandemicaveragefor2015-2019.

The cost of containerised ocean shipping has risen slightly in recent weeks after declining almost continuously for a year, according to the Freightos Baltic Exchange global containerindex.

Outside China, industrial activity is poised on the threshold between a midcycle slowdown (from which it would re-accelerate) and a cycle-ending recession (with weakness feeding on itself).

China’s re-opening after the pandemic is providing some impetus to other economies, and businesses have started to work down their excess stocks, with the inventory cycle likely to becompletedinthethirdquarter.

Lower energy prices are also a stimulus, with the cost of oil and gas significantly lower than this time a year ago, easing some pressure on firms and consumers.

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal along with Hon’ble Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, Government of Canada, co-chaired the discussions for the sixth IndiaCanada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) on 8th May in Ottawa. MDTI is a

bilateral mechanism which provides institutional mechanism to discuss a broad spectrum of trade and investment related issues and cooperation areas. The Dialogue will focus on various themes including strengthening the Bilateral Trade Relationship between India and Canada, Investment Promotion and Cooperation, Green Transition –including Critical Minerals discussion and new Areas of

Cooperation such as promoting B2B engagements.

The Ministers will also reviewed India-Canada CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) negotiations. At the last MDTI meeting in March 2022, both Ministers launched the CEPA negotiations with a possibility to have aninterimagreementorEPTA(Early Progress Trade Agreement). Since then, seven rounds of negotiations havebeenheld.

The White House’s statement of an “interconnected” region was notable as a US news website had reported a day earlier that the meeting was about a major infrastructure project. Axios wrote that the top security officials of the fourcountrieswoulddiscussaproject that will be a “network of railways” to connect the Gulf with India via shippinglanesfromports.

According to the US media group, the project is a key initiative that the WhiteHousewantstobackasChina’s influenceintheregiongrows.

Aheadofthemeeting,Sullivanhad talked about this meeting in a speech

at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy last week. He said that his meetingswoulddiscuss“newareasof cooperation between New Delhi and the Gulf as well as the United States and the rest of the region, fuelled in part by the comprehensive economic partnership signed last year between IndiaandtheUAE”.

He added that this would help “carry forward some very tangible initiatives that we think will be unlike anything that we have seen in the regioninrecentyears”.

Centre seeks fresh studies in Vadhvan Port project

MUMBAI: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has imposed stricter environmental and social checks on the proposed Vadhvan Port in the Dahanu eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). Consequently several preliminary studies will have to be done afresh by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to assess the

project’s environmental and socioeconomicimpact.

Simultaneously, a Ministry committee last month allowed major changes in the project’s architectural s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , i n c l u d i n g modifications in the master plan and thesourceofmaterialtoreclaim1,473 hectaresoflandfromtheArabianSea.

Instead of quarrying 80 million

cubic metres of murrum (fragmented rocks) from seven hillocks in Palghar district, JNPA has sought to dredge 200millioncubicmetreofearthfroma “borrowpit”offtheDamancoast.The Centre in January deferred this request as the project’s “entire scope and configuration has changed”, and instead asked JNPA to revise its prefeasibilityreport(PFR).

Speaking at the event, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted how the path-breaking India-UAE CEPA, which was negotiated in just 88 days, has become a significant turning

point in the bilateral economic relationsbetweenthetwocountries.

For India, the CEPA with UAE is thefirstintheregionandforUAE,itis their first ever CEPA. Since the entry into force of CEPA, bilateral trade between India and UAE has witnessed tremendous growth of 20% when compared to the previous year India’s exports to the UAE also recordedaremarkablegrowthof12%, reachingUS$31.3billionin2022-2023.

As part of the CEPA celebrations, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh inaugurated the Kerala Pavilion at the Annual Investment Meeting in Abu Dhabi. He held meetings with the senior

leadership of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Mubadala, the top UAE investors in India. Welcoming the surge in investments from the UAE to India,ShriRajeshKumarSinghinvited bothcompaniestoexplorenewsectors for investing in India, especially the renewable and digital sectors The UAE is currently the seventh largest investor in India with an estimated investmentofUS$18billion

The visit of Secretary, DPIIT to UAE is his first official trip abroad since assumption of office in April 2023, indicating the significance India attaches to close relationship with UAE.

India bans Apple imports, exempts Bhutan

NEWDELHI:Indiahasprohibited the import of apples where the Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) import price is less than or equal to Rs 50 per kilogram. The government changes the import policy to “prohibited”from“free”earlier

import policy will not be applicable to Bhutan, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.

“Import of apples…is Prohibited' wherever the CIF Import Price is less than equal ot Rs 50/- per kilogram. Minimum Import Price conditions

shall not be applicable for imports fromBhutan,”DGFTsaid.

In April-February FY23, India’s apple imports were $260.37 million, with Turkey, Italy, Iran and Chile being the top sources. In the full 2021-22, India imported fresh apples worth$385.1million.

DGTR recommends anti-dumping duty on optical fibre imported from China, Korea, Indonesia

NEW DELHI: DGTR has recommended imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports of a certain type of optical fibres from China, Korea and Indonesia to protect the domestic industry from cheap inbound shipments. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has

recommended the duty after conducting an investigation on the dumped imports of 'Dispersion Unshifted SinglemodeOpticalFiber'fromthesecountries.

The product is mainly applied to high-data rate, long distanceandaccessnetworktransportation.

Indian Railways records Monthly freight loading of 126.46 MT for April 2023

• Railways Freight revenue in April is Rs 13,893 Cr. as compared to Rs 13,011 in April 2022, a growth of 7%.

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways (IR) has recorded Monthly freight loadingof126.46MTinApril2023.The incremental loading in the month of April has been 4.25 MT i.e. a growth of 3.5%overtheAprilfiguresachievedin 2022. Freight revenue in April is Rs13,893Cr.ascomparedtoRs13,011 inApril2022,agrowthof7%.

IR has achieved a loading of 62.39 MT in Coal in April 2023 as compared to 58.35 MT in April 2022, followed by 14.49 MT in Iron ore, 12.60MT in Cement, 9.03 MT in Balance other goods, 6.74 MT Containers, 5.64 MT Steel, 5.11 MT Food grains, 4.05 MT Mineral Oil and 3.90 MT in Fertilizers.

Following the Mantra, “Hungry For Cargo”, IR has made sustained efforts to improve the ease of doing business as well as improve the service delivery at competitive prices which has resulted in new traffic coming to railways from both conventional and non-conventional commoditystreams.

India opens access road for Dry Port up to Nepal border

KOLKATA: India has opened the trackofaccessroadforthedryportup to Dodhara Chandani Municipality-1 of Kanchanpur, to boost trade and transport services between India and Nepal.

The four-Lane track which has opened by the India for dry port in Dodhara Chandani, has a length of around four kilometres and establishes connectivity between

Chakarpur of Chambawat district of Uttarakhand, India and Nepali territoryGadigoth.

Mayor of Dodhara Chadani Municipality Kishor Limbu shared the Indian side has opened a track of access road up to Nepal-India border from national highway based in bordering Chakkarpur market. The Indian side has opened access road track after

cleaning up forest in its territory, he informed.

The contract amounting to two billion rupees was awarded six months ago for the construction of an access road, with the condition that the access road should be completed inone-and-a-halfyearsofthesigning.

Now that the track is open, the next task is the blacktopping of the accessroad.

SINGAPORE: Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), a leading classification society and IACS member, organised several successful events and took part in industry activities during Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2023 (April 24-28). The SMW is an important annual gathering of the international maritime community that advances key industry issues and exchanges ideas to bring the sectorforward.

IRS hosted its 6th Singapore Advisory Committee Meeting as well as Customer Meet apart from a booth presence in Sea Asia exhibition. Additionally, the company also met with the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, His Excellency

Mr P. Kumaran, and Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of Maritime Port Authority of Singapore. These events allowed IRS to highlight its capabilities, network with industry peers, and explore challenges and opportunities facingthemaritimeindustry.

ZIM invests in Refrigerated Container fleet

HAIFA: ZIM has made an order of 1,000 Star Cool reefers with Sekstant door sensors and a similar volume for retrofitting to its existingStarCoolreefers.

The move comes as part of ZIM’s ongoing collaboration with Maersk Container Industry (MCI) to upgrade its ZIMonitor reefer fleet and support the growthoftemperature-controlledcargo.

TheStarCoolpopulationhasrapidlygrownwithZIM, now covering approximately one-third of the ocean carrier’sreeferfleet.

The Israeli box carrier has invested in MCI’s complete reefer package, including the Star Cool Integrated and the Sekstant gateway for reefer connectivity.

The Sekstant Door sensor is a wireless door opening surveillance system that has been co-developed by ZIM and creates the tracking and data needed to deliver ZIM’s commercial reefer tracking product, ZIMonitor.

The Sekstant door sensor is an add-on that provides even more information to the digital fleet management system, according to MCI, which explains that this new featureenablesthemonitoringofthecontainerwhenthe door of the reefer has been closed, and when it has been opened.

The door events are registered in the Sekstant cloud and are visible in the Sekstant user interface. The Sekstant digital ecosystem enables access to real-time

reefer information, monitoring, reporting, and seamless fleetmanagementfromanywhereintheworld.

Additionally,thedoorsensordataisconsolidatedwith the remaining reefer control data including time stamp andGPScoordinates.

MCIsaidthatitcomesasafactory-mountedoptionor canberetrofittedoneverySekstant-equippedreefer.

The wireless sensor connects to the reefer controller, and door events are even captured while the reefer is powered off, making it possible to document if a door eventhasdeviatedfromtheplannedtimeline,andtrigger analert.

Part of ZIM’s fleet also includes Star Cool CA to cater tothecompany’scontrolledatmosphereshipments.

The Sekstant door sensors are expected to provide ZIM with the data and tracking it needs to deliver ZIMonitor, a first-class solution for high value and sensitive cargo. The new Star Cool CA reefers entered ZIM’scontainerfleetduringMarch2023.

Maersk announces new warehouse for electric car batteries near Hanover

HAMBURG: Maersk, together with the German project developer bauwo, is building a 20,000 square meter logistics center near Hanover for the storage and handling of electric car batteries and components to produce the batteries. Following the successful launch of a similar facility in Teplice, Czech Republic, in November 2022, the two new hallsinBerkhof,directlyontheA7motorway,willfurther strengthen Maersk’s strong position as a logistics partner of the automotive industry. Thanks to the recently granted construction permit, the works on the approx. 50,000 square meter site have already begun. The completion of the highly automated battery warehouseisscheduledforMay2024injustoneyear.

“In addition to Teplice, the battery warehouse in Berkhof will be our second, even larger location in Europe, with which we will meet the growing demand of theautomotiveindustryforlogisticssolutionsforelectric car batteries. The new facility is close to the production sites of several car makers and will help e-mobility to grow across Germany and Europe,” said Jens-Ole Krenzien, Maersk Managing Director North Europe Continent.

“Logisticsintheautomotiveindustryisoneofthemost demanding.Throughourcontroloverallimportantassets alongthetransportchainfromthefactoryinAsiatotheuse of the parts in a plant in Europe, we can offer our customersnotonlytailor-made,butaboveallveryresilient and flexible logistics solutions,” Krenzien continues. “The logistics center in Berkhof will be a central building block for transporting and temporarily storing the batteriesasthemostimportantelementine-mobility.”

In addition to storage and repacking, the services offered in the special warehouse include in-depth quality controls and charging of the batteries as well as other value-addingservicesalongautomotivesupplychains.

Up to 34,000 pallets can be accommodated in the two halls with a clear height of twelve metres. The batteries are monitored by a sophisticated safety system. Forexample,incaseofhighertemperatureorexpansion insize,apalletisevacuatedfullyautomaticallyandsafely stowed outdoors in a special container where it can be further examined. The warehouse can be tailored to separate compartments dedicated to a customer if needed.

The strong growth of e-mobility in Europe continues, and the demand for specialized battery logistics is increasing. In addition to the conversion of new car production from combustion technology to electric engines, the handling and recycling of used e-car batteries of the first-generation is now also starting at scale. Specialized companies, including some from Germany, can give these used batteries a second, multiyearlifebyreplacingindividualbatterycells,butthisalso requiresstorageanddistributioncapacities.
