Cont’d from Pg.3 Recently, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers and COSCO SHIPPING Lines took new actions to promote blockchain-based electronic bill of lading (EBL) to provide customers with a better service experience to meetalltheirneeds.

On February 18, the fully loaded M.V. COSCO SHIPPING HARMONY berthed at Qingdao Qianwan West Port United Terminal. After the vessel's arrival, the customer quickly completed the document switch through the blockchain-based paperless cargo release application. It was also the first time COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers realized the paperless release of imported cargoes in China, with the pilot scheme being firstimplementedinpulptransportation.

On February 13, COSCO SHIPPING Lines Qingdao issued its first blockchain-based EBL, marking

the official opening of the new cargo release channel at QingdaoPort.

For this batch of cargo delivered from Qingdao to Japan, the company carried out preliminary data analysis for the promotion of EBL based on route service reports, and managed to ensure stable business operation through repeatedtestsandtrainingonEBLservice.

The successful issuance of blockchain-based EBL enabled the customers to truly benefit from "intelligent digital service", which boasts apparent competitive advantages in terms of its user-friendly operation, lower cost,andimprovedcustomerexperience.

In the entire 2021-22, non-basmati rice export was 17.26 mt worth $6.12 billion(Rs.45,652.35crore).

Freightuptrend

Exporters said when the government imposed the duty in September last year, the freight cost was about $100-$120/tonne and it was declining. While it dropped to

about $50/tonne in February, it began to show an uptrend inthefirstweek.

“Importing countries did not feel the impact of export duty as in the same period there was a fall in the freight cost. One thing is established the world now knows India as a credible destination for non-basmati rice,” said BV Krishna Rao, President of The Rice Exporters Association (TREA). There is no concern for now and exporters are ready to wait for the next kharif crop’s arrival in October to see if any policy change will be required,Raosaid.

He said the increase in non-basmati rice has to be seen amid the crop failure in Pakistan and also the quantitative restriction in Myanmar. However, he said: “The world needs Indian rice. We will seek a change in policyifatallthereisadropinexport.”

Rao further said even after the imposition of export duty, neither there is a substantial improvement in procurement, noradeclineinexport.

“But the production was, is and will be still working, as old, heavily used containers must be replaced. We must wait it out till the end of the Q1 of 2023 to see how this situation isdeveloping because ofsomanydisruptions in our industry,” pointed out Agnieszka Polejewska, container depot department coordinator of Langowski Logistics, a companybasedinPoland.

DYE EXPORTS DOWN 21%

Limited procurements of dyes and intermediates by European textile manufacturers have significantly reduced exports. According to the data by Chemexcil, dye exports declined 21% from April to December 2022 due to the reduced demand in the international market. “High raw material costs have made production unviable at a time when demand is less.

Manufacturers cannot pass on costs to end-consumers at a time like this. As a result, major manufacturing units are either shut or operational at minimal 30% capacity utilization,” said Bhupendra Patel,chairmanofChemexcil(Gujarat).

DEMAND FOR DIAMONDS DOWN

Discretionary spending declined due to the economic slowdown in these countries due to the Russia-Ukraine war. As a result, the demand for polished diamonds – a luxury commodity – decreased too.”

Hapag-Lloyd commits to 100% adoption of electronic Bills of Lading by 2030

HAMBURG : Only recently, the nine ocean carrier members of the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), including Hapag-Lloyd, announced their commitment to fully adopt standardized electronic bills of lading (eBL) by 2030. As a first step, the members commit to converting 50% of original bills of lading to digitalwithinthenextfiveyears.

Switching away from the transfer of physical paper bills of lading could save $6.5 billion in direct costs for stakeholders, enable $30-40 billion in annual global trade growth, transform the customer experience and improve sustainability.

The bill of lading is one of the most important trade documents in container shipping. It functions as a documentoftitle,receiptforshippedgoodsandarecordof agreedtermsandconditions.Oceancarriersissuearound 45 million bills of lading a year. In 2021, only 1.2% of these wereelectronic.

Manual, paper-based processes are time-consuming,

expensive and environmentally unsustainable for stakeholders along complex supply chains. Paper-based processes break down when cargo in ports cannot be gated out because original bills of lading, or title documents fail to arrive or cannot be manually processed in time. In contrast, digital processes enable data to flow instantlyandsecurely,reducingdelaysandwaste.

Transforming document exchange through the eBL will accelerate digitalisation to benefit customers, banks, customs/government authorities, providers of ocean shippingservices&allmaritimesupplychainstakeholders.

SINGAPORE : With close to two decades of driving connectivity to South America, PIL is committed to growing with the region.Toreaffirmitscommitmentto South America, PIL’s Latin America Regional Office organised two meetingsforitsagenciestowardsthe end of February 2023, with the aim of strengthening PIL’s services in the region so as to better meet the needs ofitscustomers.

The two meetings were held in Santiago, Chile and Sao Paulo, Brazil respectively, and they were well attendedbyPIL’scolleaguesandpartnersfromacrossthe region. Colleagues from PIL’s Trade and Logistics DivisionsinSingaporeHeadOfficeflewtoChileandBrazil to attend the meetings, while colleagues from PIL’s Group Commercial and Agency Management Division joined virtually.

Our recent exciting journey started when PIL introduced its new West Coast South America 6 service (WS6) in 2022.
