Paradip Port eyes Top spot among Major Ports, aims at 150 million tonne cargo handling this fiscal

PARADIP : In a bid to conquer the top spot among major ports of the country, Paradip Port Trust is aiming at 150 million tonne of cargo handling this fiscal and implementing a strategy to raise its capacity to 500 mt by 2047, its Chairman Shri P L Haranadh said on Sunday,7thMay.

The port in Odisha is now second among all the 12 Major Ports in India, handling135.36milliontonneofcargoin 2022-23, just 2.5 million tonne less than the top-notched Deendayal Port, KandlainGujarat,hesaid.

“The cargo handling target for the current fiscal is 150 million tonne. We may become the top port among the Major Ports of the Country in terms of cargo handling if everything goes well,” Paradip Port Chairman P L Haranadh was quoted by PTI as saying this recently.

The strategy to increase the port’s capacity utilisation includes “tariff freeze, an emphasis on coastal shipping

for competitiveness, land allocation for port-led industrialisation, and expandingthecargobasket”.

Paradip Port, which has now mechanised 80 per cent of its berths, plans to become a 100 per cent mechanised facility by 2030 with the full automation of existing four semimechanisedberths,hesaid.

In addition, the port is “focusing on coastalshippingtoreducethecountry’s logisticcosts”,hesaid.

“We currently have 74 million tonne of coastal shipping capacity and aim at increasing it to 100 million tonne by 2030,”thechairmansaid.

The port has already lined up a capital expenditure (capex) of Rs 10,000 crore to increase its capacity to 400 milliontonneby2030,hesaid.

“As part of Vision 2047, our target is to achieve a 500 million tonne capacity. Capex for 2030 from all sources will be approximately Rs 10,000 crore, and it will help raise our rated capacity to 400

million tonne from 279 million tonne now,”Haranadhsaid.

Despite global headwinds, Paradip Portremainsconfidenttoimplementits expansionplans.

As part of its port-led industrialisation initiatives, the authorities have allocated 769 acres of land to various industries, which will result in over Rs 8,700 crore of investment,hesaid.

“This will help generate an additional 50 million tonne of cargo traffictotheport,”Haranadhsaid.

The Paradip Port authorities have also planned to diversify its cargo basket.

The port plans to set up an LNG/CNG refilling centre on a PPP model to promote eco-friendly transportation.

It also plans to develop Paradip into a hydrogen hub, with an exclusive facilityforhandlinggreenhydrogenand greenammoniaonaPPPmodel.

Adani’s Mundra Port cargo adds Rs 80,732 crore to Customs’ assets

MUNDRA : Cargo handled at Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has contributed Rs 80,732 crore to the assets of the Customs department in FY23 compared to Rs60,945croreinFY22.

According to company executives, with the rising traffic at the port, the Customs department is targeting to earn Rs 1.15 trillion by the end of the ongoingfiscalyear.

Adani Ports and SEZ has handled nearly a quarter of India’s port cargo, leading to the rise in Customs receipts,

theexecutivessaidonSunday,7thMay.

During the Covid-hit fiscal year ending March 2021, Customs receipts from cargo routed through the company’s port and inland container depotswasRs41,110crore(seechart).

APSEZ has also made substantial rail freight payments to the Indian Railways with freight payments more than doubling to reach Rs 14,034 crore inFY23.

In FY21, APSEZ made payments of Rs 5,927 crore to the railways, which increasedtoRs8,573croreinFY22.

The rise in rail freight payments not only supports the railways but also

contributes to the overall development ofthenation’sinfrastructure.

CargohandledatAPSEZalsoadded to waterfront royalties and revenue shares to respective maritime boards andportauthorities.

In FY23, the company’s payments amounted to Rs 906 crore on this front. This is a 1.5 times increase when compared to the amount paid of Rs 622 crore in FY21. In FY22, the maritime royaltywasRs807crore.

In FY23, APSEZ handled 339 million tonnes of cargo, an 8.6 per cent year-onyear increase and a 37 per cent rise comparedtoFY21.

World Trade data shows early signs of ‘Reglobalisation’ across countries

NEW YORK : The global trading system is undergoing tectonic shifts thatwillreorientinternationalsupply chainsfordecadestocome.

Blame two main forces. Companies spooked by pandemic shortages, price spikes and shipping disruptions are reducing reliances on a single factory or Country. Meanwhile, Governments — especially those in the US and Europe — want to ensure access to key materials like semiconductors and rare-earth minerals in case the world trade splinters into geopoliticalblocs.

The transformation that some are calling “reglobalization” will take years, and trade data is only beginning to offer clues about the scope of the changes, and who’s winning and losing. Here are eight indicators to watch to help

understand the implications of this neweraofgeostrategiceconomics.

Despite talk of globalization’s demise, economic integration via cross-border commerce has shown remarkable resilience through war, famineandapandemic.Overthepast three years, world trade as a share of global production has softened a bit but remains largely in line with historical trends. In fact, there has been no meaningful shift in the trajectory toward greater trade openness since at least 2006, according to a recent ING Groep NVanalysis.

The increase of geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing spurred speculation about a sectoral decoupling between the world’s largest economies. While the value of US imports of Chinese goods and services reached the highest on

recordin2022,therearesignsthatUS tariffs are shifting bilateral trade flows. Last year, US goods imports from China that are subject to tariffs fell by about 14% versus 2017 pre-trade war levels, according to analysis from Chad Bown, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for InternationalEconomics.

Overthepastfiveyears,UStariffs, export restrictions and subsidies havepersuadedAmericancompanies to diversify their imports away from China. The total share of Chinese imports to the US has slipped about 3 percentage points since 2018, when former President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on thousands of Chinese goods. During this time, China ceded a portion of its share of totalUSimportstootherAsianexport nations like Vietnam, India, Taiwan, MalaysiaandThailand.

Industrial & Warehousing demand rises 11% YoY

NEW DELHI: Industrial and warehousingdemandacrossthetop5 cities remained strong during Q1 2023, rising by 11 per cent YoY at 7.2 mn sq ft. The quarter also saw the highest leasing compared to the previous8quarters.

This sustained streak in leasing was backed by 3PL operators who continued to expand across large markets, forming 41 per cent of total leasing during the quarter. This was distantly followed by the FMCG sectorat12percent.

Interestingly, demand from retail and FMCG sectors saw a three-fold rise YoY, as they expanded their footprints in larger markets such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. This pick-up in the take up of industrial warehousing space pairs well with the growth in private consumption in the domestic economy.

Delhi-NCRledthedemandduring thefirstquarteraccountingfor29per centshareintotalleasing,followedby Mumbai at 25 per cent. Mumbai saw 37 per cent YoY rise in leasing, led by 3PL operators who continued their expansion spree in the city despite weaker economic & business sentiment. Tauru Road and NH 48 in Delhi NCR and Bhiwandi in Mumbai remained attractive markets during thequarter.

“3PL operators are targeting larger dense markets with goodquality infrastructure for expansion to ensure quick delivery of online orders. It contributed to more than two-third of the total leasing in Mumbai, led by select large deals. Averagedealsizeby3PLoperatorsin the city was more than 2 lakh sq feet, 69 per cent higher than pan India average. 3PL operators will continue to eye larger markets as they look to

augment their distribution network.” says Vimal Nadar, Senior Director, andHeadofResearch,ColliersIndia.

Bhupindra Singh, Managing Director,NorthIndiaatColliers,says, “Delhi-NCR continued to lead Industrial and warehousing demand contributing to about 30 per cent of the total demand across top 5 cities during Q1 2023. Besides 3PL companies, robust demand from diverse occupiers such as FMCG, Automobile & Electronics led to rise in occupancy levels across key markets of Delhi-NCR. NH-48 and Farukhnagar clusters continued to attract occupiers owing to competitive rentals & healthy supply pipeline of Grade A warehousing spaces.”

These markets formed about half of the overall leasing during the quarter and likely to witness most of thenewsupplyduring2023,hesaid.

N. F. Railway maintains steady growth in freight unloading

NEW DELHI: Freight unloading over N. F. Railway is continuously registering a steady growth.

During the month of April, 2023, 1206 freight carrying rakes were unloaded. During financial year 2022-23, 14680 freight carrying rakes wereunloaded.Thisisanincreaseof 6.71% in comparison to the financial year2021-22.

N. F. Railway has transported goodslikeFCIrice,sugar,salt,edible oil, food grains, fertilizer, cement, coal, vegetables, auto, tank,

containerandotheritemsduringthe month and unloaded them in different goods sheds within its jurisdiction.

During April, 2023, 640 rakes of freight carrying trains were unloaded in Assam out of which 294 were loaded with essential commodities. 91 rakes in Tripura, 23 rakes in Nagaland, 4 rakes in Manipur, 9 rakes in Arunachal Pradesh and 3 rakes in Mizoram were unloaded during the month. Moreover, 216 freight rakes in

West Bengal and 220 freight rakes in Bihar were also unloaded during the month within the jurisdiction of N.F.Railway.

Essential and other commodities arebeingtransportedregularlytonot only meet the essential requirement ofcommonpeoplebutalsotokeepthe local economic activity of all the regions going. Speedy execution of doubling works at important sections overN.F.Railwayhasledtoincreased inward and outward movement of freighttraffic.

India-Russia Ties : After S-400 Shipments, Russia could now suspend Oil Exports to India

GOA: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, while answering a reporter’s question during his press conference in Goa on Friday, May 5, 2023, bluntly implied that in its dealings with Russia, India wants to eat the cake and have it too, according to a BloombergReport.

India, which has been lapping up cheap Russian oil for domestic consumption as well as export as refined commodities, hasn’t been compensatingRussiaforitsoilimports.

Lavrov pointed out that Russia has accumulatedbillionsofrupeesinIndian banksthatRussiacannotuse.

“This is a problem. We need to use thismoney.Butforthis,Rupeesmustbe converted to another currency, and this isnowbeingdiscussed.”

India and Russia have been

exploringoptionsforsettlingtheirtrade in rupees or rubles since the start of the Russian Special Operation (SMO) in UkraineinFebruary2022,buttheyhave made little headway even after more thanayear.

Trade Imbalance Between India & Russia

The problem is – India’s imports from Russia far exceed its exports. As a result, Indian rupee payments to Russian bank Vostro accounts in Indian banksareofnousetoRussia.

The obvious solution is for India to step up its exports to Russia. Unfortunately, Indian exports are severely constrained by the lackluster quality of Indian goods. Also, Russia is a resource-rich country, so India doesn’t have the option to export commodities toRussia.

India could pay the accumulated billions of rupees to Russia by converting them to a currency like the Chinese Yuan, however, that would entail bearing the cost of conversion. China’s massive trade surplus with India makes the rupee particularly weakagainsttheYuan.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel to buy Essar’s Iron Ore handling terminal at Vizag Port

VISAKHAPATNAM: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Ltd (AM/NS India) will acquire a 16 million tonne (mt) capacity iron terminalatVisakhapatnamPortfrom a unit of Essar Group for some Rs800-1,000croreasthejointventure steel maker snaps up port assets that are intrinsic to the steel plant at Hazira which it acquired under India’sbankruptcylaw.

Essar Vizag Terminals Ltd (EVTL), a wholly owned unit of Essar Ports Ltd (EPL), acquired the Iron Ore Handling Complex at Visakhapatnam Port that was previously run by the state-owned port authority, under a privatisation programmeoftheGovernment.

Essar Vizag Terminals clinched the 30-year deal in an auction by placing the highest revenue share of 31.05percentwiththeportauthority.

“The Board of Visakhapatnam

Port Authority has cleared the proposal submitted by Essar Vizag TerminalstosellthefacilitytoAM/NS India subject to security clearance from the Central Government,” a Visakhapatnam Port Authority official said. Security clearance from the Centre is mandated for private cargo contracts and mergers and acquisitions at major ports or those runbytheUnionGovernment.

“The security clearance for the deal is expected within a month,” the official said. “Once it comes, wewillissueanoobjectioncertificate tothetransaction,”headded.

EssarVizagTerminalstookoverthe ore handling complex of Visakhapatnam Port in May 2015 by paying an upfront payment of Rs185 crore to the port authority. Inaddition,itiscontractuallymandated to pay a revenue share of 31.05 percent annuallytotheportauthority.

The terminal comprises three berths (two outer harbour berths and one inner harbour berth) with a combined capacity of 23 mt. After taking over the terminal, Essar has invested some Rs800 crores to upgrade the outer harbour berths (OB I & II) and mechanize the inner harbour berth (WQ-I).

The terminal is strategically located in the Bay of Bengal in close proximity to the iron ore mines located in Chhattisgarh, Southern OdishaandJharkhand.

The facility has dedicated rail connectivitytoIndia’sironoremining belt.

The all-weather deep draft facility has the capacity to serve the rapidly growing markets of South-East Asia, includingChina,Japan,andKorea, in addition to coastal movement for the steelindustrywithinIndia.

Agri Exports rise 9% to $26.3 bn in FY23

NEW DELHI: Exports of agricultural and processed food products rose by 9% to $26.3 billion in 2022-23 as compared to FY22, driven by a spike in shipment of rice, fruits and vegetables, livestock and dairy products.

The shipment of products under the agricultural and processed food products exports development authority (Apeda) basket surpassed thetargetof$23.56billionforFY23.

According to the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, the value of rice exports in FY23 rose by more than 15% year-on-year to a record $11.1 billion from $9.6 billion in the previousfiscal.Intermsofvolume,rice shipment grew by 5% to 22.34 million tonne(MT)lastfiscalyear-on-year.

The increased realisation in rice

exports has been achieved despite India last year banning broken rice shipment and imposition of exports taxof20%onwhiterice.

Officials attribute the spike in rice exports to factors such as robust global demand especially from West Asian countries, Africa and Europe and floods in Pakistan, a major grain exporter which had hugely impacted alargechunkofpaddycrop.

India has been the world’s largest exporterofriceinthelastdecadeand currently has 45% share in global graintrade.

“Robust global demand and competitive pricing have ensured a surge in rice exports in the current fiscal and adherence to quality parameters has resulted in sharp increaseindemandforIndianricewith the grain being shipped to more than

75countries,”anofficialsaidrecently.

Fresh and processed fruits and vegetables reported export growth of 18.8%to$3.8billioninthelastfiscalyear. The shipment of cereals, preparations and processed food products rose by 20%$4.3billioninFY23.

Export of meat, dairy and poultry products declined marginally comparedtolastyearat$4billionlast fiscalcomparedtopreviousyear.

However exports realisation, in terms of rupees, rose by 4% to Rs 32,334crorelastfiscal.

Exports of products under Apeda basket was $ 25.6 billion in 2021-22, which was around 51% of the country’s total agricultural goods exports of more than $50 billion. Rest of agricultural products exports include marine, tobacco, coffee andtea.

SCR to start Gati-Shakti Cargo Terminal at Gadchendur Station of Secunderabad Division

HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Division of South CentralRailwayhasdecidedtostarta new Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) at Gadchendur Station. This terminal will be constructed entirely on Railway land and the tender was awarded at the cost of Rs 15.20 crores to Dalmia CementBharatLimited.

Gati-Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) policy has been

introduced by Indian Railways with a view to boost investment from industry in development of additional terminals for handling rail cargos, a pressreleasesaid.

These terminals will ease the handling of freight commodities for transportation by rail with enhanced facilities duly providing safe and secure transportation. Under this policy, apart from new sidings, the under-construction and existing

private sidings/terminals can also migrate to convert as Gati-Shakti MultiModalCargoTerminal.

The scope of the construction of GCTinvolveslayingofadditionalline, concreting of surface, electronic in motion weigh bridge, provision of hamali rest room, covered shed, approach road, water supply arrangements, Installation of computerized working, the press releaseadded.

Logistics Skill Council recognises FFFAI as Training Partner

MUMBAI: The Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations’ in India (FFFAI) has been recognised as a Training Partner by the Logistics Skill Council (LSC) recently. Presenting the Certificate of Partnership at the 13th FFFAI Executive Committee Meeting heldinThiruvananthapuram, Dr.C.Unnikrishnan

Nair Head - Maritime Logistic, LSC said the partnership is aimed to strengthen the training initiatives of the Council thanks to FFFAI’s presence at the operation level across the country through its 30 Member Associations. He also commended FFFAI’s initiatives pertaining to skilling the logistics industry practitioners and aspirants keen to choose the logistics sector as an exciting career option through its training arm Indian Institute of Freight Forwarders (IIFF). As a result, collaboration between LSC andFFFAIwouldprovideabigpushtotheskilldevelopment initiatives,pertainingtothelogisticsindustryinIndia.

Addressing the FFFAI EC Members, Dr Unnikrishnan elaborated on the formation and present activities of LSC and sector specific course details. Presently LSC is gearing up all its 12 logistics sub-sectors to spread awareness in such a way as to make it an aspirational sector, for both men and women. The Sub Sectors include
