At the panel event consisting of distinguished speakers from ports, NGOs, and Government, Claudio delivered MSC’s perspectives on lessons learned from the establishment of green corridors, and potential solutions to challenges still facing the industry regardingthewideradoptionofnew marinefuels.

The panel also explored the dilemma facing industry stakeholders regarding further investment in new technologies and fuel sources when faced with uncertainty around what fuels will be viable and mainstream over the next decade. When asked by the moderator about this first-mover dilemma facing shippers and fuel suppliers, Claudio declared “we are willing and ready” on further adopting and embracing alternative fuel solutions referencing MSC’s commitmenttodecarbonization.

Speaking about lessons learned from green

corridors, Claudio stated “participation to green corridors allows us to share with peers experiences and ideas on the adoption of new technologies and different fuels. Green corridors are certainly a practical way to start the decarbonization pathway but, being present in over 160 countries around the world, we believe that experience gained shall be transferred across the industry because we need global and flexible solutions to achieve our decarbonizationgoals.”

“Also, it is imperative that we keep in mind the necessity for not only supply of alternative fuels at scale, but also efficient and timely accessibility to fuels” while stressing the importance of having an interconnected network of sufficient bunkering infrastructure,” said, Claudio AbbateGroup Vice President of Maritime Policy and Government Affairs. While addressing a question from the audience on what the future holds for the sector given the rapidly evolving landscape of regulation and alternative fuels, Claudio stressed the importance of fuel flexibility and maintainingarangeoffueloptionsaswhatappearstobe potentially viable or mainstream today may not be in the future.

Sea-Intelligence : Who fuels the Price War ?

COPENHAGEN - As we have shown on many occasions, freight rates are primarily determined by changes in vessel utilisation, which in turn means that when shipping lines deploy “too much” capacity, they effectively contribute to falling rates, and in times of endemic over-supply, such as those we are currently heading into, over-capacity becomes “fuel” for a price war. While there is to objective measure for “too much” capacity, a starting point would be to compare how capacitygrowthlinesupwithdemandgrowth.

Infigure1,wehavecalculatedthedifferenceinpercentage points between demand growth and capacity growth, for the three carrier alliances (including standalone services operated by the alliance carriers) and non-alliance carriers. A positive number means that a carrier alliance has seen their capacity grow more (or contract less) than the market demand,andassuchhowmuchtheyhave“contributed”tothe structuralovercapacityinthemarket.

The 2M alliance has for part of the time contributed slightly to overcapacity, and for other periods have not contributed at all or have been reducing capacity more than the demand decline in the market. It also appears that MSC contributes more to capacity reductions than Maersk. Conversely, we see that especially THE Alliance carriers, as well as the non-alliance carriers, have contributed the most to thestructuralovercapacityintheTranspacificmarket.

This does not necessarily mean that THE Alliance

carriers, Maersk, and the non-alliance carriers are at the forefront of driving freight rates down directly. But it does mean that these carriers are more “responsible” for the overcapacity in the market, than the other carriers. Also, a carrier might choose to not reduce capacity if they can fill their own vessels, but the net effect of this is structural overcapacity in the market, which does in turn fuel a price war.

China Jan-Feb exports, imports slump again as global demand falters

BEIJING - China's exports in the January-February period againfellfromayearearlier,customs datashowed on Tuesday, while imports also decreased again and at a faster rate, reflecting a slowdown in the global economy and weak domesticdemand.

China's exports in the two months were 6.8% lower than a year before, beating a Reuters a poll that expected exports to decreaseby9.4%.Importsweredownby10.2%;missingthepoll estimatebyalargemargin,whichhadpredicteda5.5%drop.

December showed a sharp 9.9% annual fall in exports as global demand cooled, while that month's imports fell by a

moremodest7.5%.

The customs agency publishes combined January and February trade data to smooth out distortions caused by the shifting timing of the Lunar New Year, which this year fell in January.

However, imports were expected to continue to gradually recover as consumer confidence returns following the removal of COVID-19 restrictions in December. Chinese policymakers have consistently cautioned that exports could struggle as the risk of a global recession increases.

Indian Onion exports jump 49% in April-Dec on demand from S-E and West Asia

NEW DELHI : India’s fresh onion exports jumped 49 per cent in volume to 1.72 million tonnes (mt) and gained 15 per cent in dollar terms at $394 million during the first nine months of the current fiscal compared with the same period a year ago on robust demand from South-East Asian countries andWestAsia.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Exports Development Authority (APEDA), which has taken several steps including the creation of an Onion Export Promotion Forum, is confident that the shipments for the financial year 2022-23 will exceed last year’s levels on higher supplies and rising demand from key buyers such as Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesiaamongothercountries.

“As per the trade feedback at present, the demand for Indian onions is increasing in the international market and we expect the shipments to exceed last year’s levels,” said APEDA Chairman, M Angamuthu. India exported onions worth $460 million in 2021-22 and major destinations were Bangladesh, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Qatar, Vietnam, Oman, Kuwait, Singapore, SaudiArab,Bahrain,MaldivesandMauritius.

Specialinitiatives

India, which accounts for about a fourth of the global onion output, is the third largest exporter after Netherlands and Mexico. In a bid to give further impetus to onion shipments, APEDA has taken up initiatives such as regular interaction with the trade for addressing the issues in supply chain, sensitisation of trade towards compliance of standards prescribed by the importing countries and regular follow-up with concerned stakeholders including government agencies, Indian missions abroad, exporters, R&D institutions among others,Angamuthusaid.

Ajit Shah, President, Horticulture Produce Exporters Association, said while the exports are good, the growth in overseas demand is not in sync with the rise in our production. “Due to the impact of the ban on exports imposed by India in 2019-20, countries such as Turkey, Egypt and Bangladesh among others, which are key buyers of onions, have started growing their own product, affecting the demand. Moreover, countries like the Philippines tend to favour Chinese onions andarenotimportingfromus,”Shahsaid.

Further, Shah said though the exports may grow in volume terms,invaluetermstheshipmentsarelikelytohoveraround lastyear’slevelsaspriceshavecomedownthisyear.

E-way bills for Feb show moderation

NEW DELHI - - The number of electronic permits issued to transport goods within and across states moderated in February from the previous month but remainedabovethe80millionmarkseensinceNovember.

At 81.8 million, e-way bill generation indicates a midquarter dip, but year-end inventory clearance by companies could boost goods shipment in March. E-way bill data, a high-frequency indicator of consumption, shows that the number of permits raised often goes up in the last month of every quarter. E-way bills in February point to transportation activity in the month for which taxesarecollectedinMarch.

Quoting its February manufacturing purchase manager’s index figure, S&P Global had said earlier this month that India’s manufacturing industry sustained robust output growth halfway through the final fiscal quarter,butitwasdrivenmainlybythedomesticmarket.It pointed out a notable slowdown in the rate of international

sales expansion of the 400 companies it surveyed. Although companies continued to scale up input purchases, capacity utilization was not under pressure, S&P said on March 1 while reporting the 20th consecutive month of production growth, with manufacturing PMI at 55.3inFebruary.

India’s exports have weakened since October due to a global decline in demand. Excluding November, exports havedeclinedinthreeoutoffourmonthssinceOctober.

“The e-way bill generation numbers for February 2023 (81.8 million) need to be seen in the context of an 18% jump from February 2022 (69.1 million), which is a good sign of growth. February being a 28-day month, flat numbers compared to January were expected. We can expect the eway bill generation to touch record numbers in March 2023,” said Gautam Mahanti, business head at IRIS Business Services, which operates a private GST e-invoicingregistrationportal.

COCHIN - Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said recently that coastal and port connectivity infrastructure play a pivotal role in a nation’seconomicgrowth.

In Kerala, a four-lane National Highway (NH) has been developed at a total cost of Rs 571 crore to connect ICTT(International Container Transhipment Terminal)Vallarpadam with Kalamassery, the Ministersaid.

The project involved the construction of a port connectivity highway, stretching 8.721 km through the backwaters of the Arabian Sea at Cochin, on reclaimed land. He said this highway links the North-South Corridor for freight movement to Cochin Port, thereby facilitating thetransportationofgoods.

Furthermore, this highway enhances the mobility of eight seashore villages and has significantly contributed to the socio-economic development of the region, he

added.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi our unwavering commitment is to deliver timebound, cost-effective, high-quality, and sustainable road infrastructure that serves the needs of our citizens,” he stated.

Talking about another project, in a series of tweets, Gadkari has said in Nagaland we are undertaking a significant infrastructure development project, the construction of a 14.71-kilometer-long four-lane highway from Dimapur to Kohima (Package-II). He said the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 339.55crore.

He said the primary objective of this project is to improve the connectivity between the capital city and other major commercial centers in the state, thereby enablingfastermovementofpeopleandgoodsforgrowth andprosperity.

ONE’S Nixon says decarbonizing shipping could add $2,000-$3,000 per container

SINGAPORE : Ocean carriers should focus on transitioning from fossil fuels to decarbonized green fuels but expect an added cost of between $2000-$3000 per forty-foot container, warned Jeremy Nixon, CEO of Ocean Network Express (ONE).

Nixon who spoke at the TPM 2023 conference in Long BeachonFebruary28thsaidaninternationalregulationor carbon tax will be needed so that all ocean carriers make the investment together and not allow for some carriers to opt out continuing to operate with cheaper fossil fuels that willallowthemtoundercutdecarbonizedoceancarriers.

Nixon explained the process by which the adoption of green fuels would add $2000 to $3000 to the cost of a 40-foot container: “First, we have got to get the green fuel. So, the key three solutions, which are really methanol,

ammonia, potentially synthetic LNG…requirealotofgreenhydrogen. Many other industries are competing for green hydrogen, so we need to make this call to all Governments, to the IMO (International Maritime Organization). We need to accelerate the production of green hydrogen acrosstheenergycompanies.

The IMO is the United Nations agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

Nixon said the cost of fuel for container ships today is about $1,000 per forty-foot container: “That’s roughly what thecostcomponentisofusingcarbonfuel.Thesenewfuels are going to be two or three times more expensive. So, potentially $2,000-3,000 will be the future fuel cost of movinga40-footcontainer.”

Evergreen orders 12,500 Containers from Singamas Container Holdings

TOKYO: Evergreen Marine Corporation has ordered 12,500 containers from Singamas Container Holdings for US$34.3 million,astheTaiwaneselineroperatorworks towards expanding its business, despite the weak market conditions.

In January, Evergreen’s General Manager Eric Hsieh unveiled plans to order 40,000 more containers –after having spent US$51.53 million on 9,800 new dry containers and 6,171 used boxes from Evergreen’s Singapore subsidiary in 2022. Last year, Evergreen also spentUS$65.24milliontobuy7,800reefersfromDongFang InternationalContainer.

Evergreen also purchased its Singapore unit’s office for US$32 million to operate its own agency in the South-east Asian city-state, as the group expects delivery of51shipsoverthenexttwoyears.

Hsieh appeared to have been optimistic because of the

pick-up in freight rates just before the Chinese New Year holiday, saying that Evergreen vessels on the Transpacific were fully loaded and lines attempted to impose a general rate increase (GRI) of US$1,000-$2,000 per FEU that month.

Hsieh had acknowledged there were long-running concerns about overcapacity. Alphaliner has forecast containershippingsupplytogrowbyabout8%in2023,with demand rising by just 2.7%. He said then, “We aren’t worried by the recent correction in container freight rates and we’re sticking to our expansion plans to boost our competitiveness.”

However, Hsieh thinks that stricter environmental regulations, such as the need for owners and operators to start meeting the requirements of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), could remove about 10% of capacity from the market. The tonnage overhang therefore “may not be asseriousasimagined”.
