DHAKA: Exports and imports between Bangladesh and India resumed via railway through Benapole land port on Wednesday, 4th September morning, after being suspended for 47 days, as per media reports.
The trade resumed, following discussions between high-level officials from both countries. Benapole Land Port Deputy Director Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter.
According to the port sources, in July, during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and public
protests, the Indian government took several measures citing security concerns Among these measures w
argo transportation and passenger travel by railway between the two countries from July 19.
However, after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 following a public uprising, a
a s established, and the situation normalised. On August 12, the rail authorities of Bangladesh sent a letter to their Indian counterparts
calling for resuming trade and passenger services.
Mohsin Milon, President of the B e n a p o l e I m p o r t - E x p o r t Association, said that traders were relieved following the resumption of trade via railway through the land port. He said that various goods, including stones, gypsum, and materials for cement production, are imported through this route. Additionally, garment products, chemicals, and motor vehicles are also imported.
LONDON: Alphaliner’s recent report reveals that profit margins of the nine largest liner operators topped 20% in Q2 2024, which is the highest since the Covid-19 pandemic, as the tonnage overhang was absorbed by the Red Sea crisis.
As in the early days of the pandemic, carriers with strong spot exposure to Far East exports performed best in the latest quarter Taiwanese operator Evergreen Marine Corporation (EMC) has the highest margin, at 30.7%, after operating profit of US$1 billion.
Effective cost control and raising revenue has enabled EMC to achieve the best margins among all operators for half of the last 14 quarters
EMC’s compatriot peer Wan Hai Lines has the second-best margin, at 28 5%, af ter overtur ning a
loss-making 2023 to stay profitable in 2024 to date.
Alphaliner opined that Wan Hai’s newbuilding spree during the pandemic was well-timed for the resurgent market amid the Red Sea crisis, which has absorbed excessive vessel supply due to detours round the Cape of Good Hope.
The consultancy said, “Wan Hai has taken delivery of 40 ships of 265,000 TEU over the past two years and with a rising cost base, would have faced a very different set of figures without the impact of the Red Sea crisis.”
HMM and Yang Ming were jointly, the third best performer where margins were concerned, recording margins of 26.9% in the quarter
Z I M L i n e a n d C O S C O h a d margins of over 20%, while ONE’s margin was just 15.8%, reflecting its
concentration on long-term shipping contracts.
Margins for Maersk Line and other European carriers were also comparatively lower due to their focus for long-ter m shipping contracts For the third straight quarter, Maersk had the lowest margins among major operators, with a 5.6% margin in Q2 2024.
COSCO, which achieved a US$1.6 billion operating profit in Q2 2024, had a margin of 24.9% and said that faster growth in emerging markets like South America and East Africa is another factor in earnings.
This year, COSCO launched new services between the Far East and the South American West Coast, as well as between China’s Dalian port and Mexico It also upgraded its China -Vietnam and China-East Africa services.

Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Wednesday, September 4, announced his intention to push for an increase in import duties on steel to counter the dumping of cheap steel from China. Speaking at the Fifth Steel Conclave organised by the Indian Steel Association, Kumaraswamy said he would engage with the finance ministry to raise import duties from the current 7.5% to 10-12%.
Expressing concern over the impact of Chinese steel imports, the minister noted that several industry players have recently approached him to discuss the challenges posed by the influx of low-priced steel “The problem which you are facing from China… I will try to convince the finance ministry to look at raising the duty on steel imports from 7.5% to 10-12%,” he stated.
Kumaraswamy also highlighted the need to remain vigilant against global challenges, particularly the slowdown in demand resulting from e
C
i n a He emphasised the steel ministry’s c o m m i t m e n t t o t h e v i s i o n o f Aatmanirbhar Bharat and asserted that the Indian steel industry is on the brink of reaching new heights despite these challenges.
Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), echoed the Minister’s concerns during the event Jindal pointed out the surge in steel imports from countries like China, Korea, and Vietnam, which have increased by 50-80% compared to last year. He called for immediate action to protect the domestic industry, stating, “We have written to the Finance Minister and Steel Minister
about this It is fiercely competitive market, prices are lower than anywhere in the world, but the imports arecominginatpredatoryprices.”
Jindal further emphasised the importance of safeguarding the industry, adding, “Steel demand is only going to increase in India, and there is huge potential for growth, but we need to ensure that the industry is protected from unfair competition.” He also suggested that the current import duty may not be sufficient, saying, “I don’t think 10-12% import duty will be enough; the prices of the steel being dumped are too low.” Kumaraswamy concluded by underscoring the steel ministry’s commitment to ensuring the growth o f t h e I n d i a n s t e e l i n d u s t r y, particularly as it plays a crucial role in the country’s journey towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
NEW DELHI: In a remarkable prelude to an event that promises to shape the future of global maritime discourse, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), successfully launched the curtain-raiser for ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue’ at ITC Maurya, New Delhi recently. The evening was marked by the unveiling of the promotional movie and logo for the dialogue by the Union Minister of MoPSW, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, alongside the Minister of State for MoPSW, Shri Shantanu Thakur, and several other eminent dignitaries
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized, “Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue represents MoPSW’s unwavering commitment to unlocking the vast potential of oceans while ensuring their sustainable and equitable development. This conference is a significant step towards fostering global cooperation and innovative solutions for a thriving maritime future.”
Shri Shantanu Thakur, who delivered the keynote address, echoed the sentiment, stating, “At the heart of this initiative lies the recognition that a flourishing ocean economy depends on strong partnerships. Sagarmanthan will be an enabling platform for many such partnerships and alliances, bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise to craft a comprehensive and forward-looking framework for ocean governance We will work collaboratively with global policymakers, scholars, and the industry to identify high-impact ideas that can galvanize the blue economy. Our goal is to align India’s maritime priorities with the broader objectives of the international community, ensuring that our contributions to ocean governance are both meaningful and far-reaching By doing so, we can ensure that the benefits of a thriving ocean economy are shared equitably among all nations, particularly those in the Global South."
The event was further enriched by the presence of distinguished personalities such as Shri Samir Saran, President of the Observer Research Foundation; Shri P Kumaran, OSD (ER & DPA), Ministry of External Affairs, India; Shri Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, India; Smt. sustainability, technology and innovation, and finally –coasts and communities, and the social impact of maritimegovernance.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the maritime sector for India’s future, Shri Sonowal added, “These initiatives are aimed at improving the efficiency and performance of our ports, strengthening shipping and national waterways, enabling large-scale coastal employment and capacity building, and unlocking and leveraging the full potential of the blue economy.”
As India continues its imminent rise as a global economic power, the maritime sector’s role in international collaboration, trade, and security becomes increasingly critical. The realisation of India’s economic ambitions relies heavily on the strength and resilience of its maritime sector, which plays a crucial role in shaping global narratives, maintaining resilient supply chains, and securing vital maritime partnerships.
Shri Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa, India, laid emphasis on this point, saying, “The oceans are important; many of us do not realise that they account for 30% of greenhouse emissions. We also do not realise that almost 40% of the global population is living around the oceans. Their livelihood is dependent upon the oceans ” He also appreciated this effort for MoPSW and ORF, under the stewardship of Minister Sonowal, for envisioning such a conference and undertaking the responsibility to bring it to life.
At the event representatives of Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Greece, Italy, Georgia, Norway, Sri Lanka & many more were present.
This curtain-raiser has set a high-octane and engaging tone for the upcoming discussions on maritime governance and ocean sustainability It underscores India’s commitment to leading global maritime conversations and ensuring that the oceans continue to be a source of prosperity and sustainability for all.

MUMBAI: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) Chairman Shri Unmesh Wagh, IRS, was recently quoted as saying that the dry port at Niphad would be made operational by March next year He recently met Nashik Divisional Commissioner Shri Pravin Gedam and District Collector Shri Jalaj Sharma to discuss the project, including acquisition of the land.
He said the JNPA has already acquired 108 acres and is now in the
process of acquiring the remaining 11 acres for rail connectivity
“If the 11 acres are acquired, we will be able to start the work and make the dry port project at Niphad operational by the end of the current financial year,” Wagh said.
The total cost of the Niphad dry port project is estimated at Rs 750 crore. The JNPA has already floated a bid for development of the project following central govt’s approval The bid is expected to be awarded to
an agency by the end of December Gedam said, “We have assured to expedite the land acquisition process. We will make the dry port operational at the earliest.”
The facilities planned at the dry port project include rail sidings for multi-modal transfers, warehouses, cold storage, climate control warehouses, intermodal transfer points, and specialised handling facilities for container terminals and bulk/break-bulk cargo.
Kerala State cabinet gave clearance to Kerala logistics park policy on We d n e s d a y, 4 t h S e p t e m b e r
According to a statement from Chief Minister’s office, it is essential to formulate a specific policy for the logistics sector, which has numerous investment opportunities, including foreign investments, and can create s u b s t a n t i a l e m p l o y m e n t opportunities.
According to the policy, large logistics parks spread over at least 10 acres and mini-logistics parks on
five acres can be established.
These parks will include essential infrastructure components such as cargo handling, intermodal transfer facilities, internal road networks, dormitories and medical centers.
A l o g i s t i c s c o o r d i n a t i o n committee, led by the chief secretary, will be formed under the policy
A state logistics cell, led by the industry department principal secretary, will also be established to implement a logistics action plan Additionally, city logistics coordination committees will be formed to develop logistics
infrastructure at the urban level.
The policy also provides for a single-window clearance system for logistics and mini-logistics parks
A capital subsidy of up to Rs 7 crore for a logistics park and up to Rs 3 crore for a mini-logistics park will be available Stamp duty and registration fees will be waived when acquiring or leasing land for logistics and mini-logistics parks. The policy enables the logistics and minilogistics parks to be established through public-private partnerships or entirely in the private sector
MUMBAI: If Donald Trump wins US Presidential election it would be beneficial for India, says a global market research by Nomura. The report says India is likely to benefit from Trump policies.
"We see India as a relative beneficiary, due to its domestic demand-driven growth model and benefits from lower commodity prices, supply chain shifts and on foreign policy."
The report however adds that "India and the US share deep economic and strategic interests that are unlikely to be compromised, irrespective of the election outcome. The US also sees India as a strategic counterweight to China on foreign policy India is a large, domestic demand-driven economy, so the e c o n o m i c f a l l o u t o f w e a k e r US economic growth should be limited."
Any frictions on trade and i m m i g r a t i o n u n d e r Tr u m p Presidency will be offset by the gains accruing to India from the ongoing supply chain shifts, as de-risking from China will gather momentum.
T h e e c o n o m i c i m p a c t o n
India should also be limited. India's economy is largely driven by domestic demand, so the potential fallout from weaker US growth will likely to be contained and the negative growth spill over should be limited. On the contrary, lower commodity prices owing to the hit to China's growth and lower oil prices, due to a greater push towards fossil fuels, will be beneficial for India.
The report says India's large forex reserve and fiscal disciple can handle any volatility.
"We also believe that India is wellprepared to handle any volatility stemming from US policies, amid its large FX reserves buffer, stable growth-moderate inflation mix, high real rates, fiscal discipline and a continued focus on reforms”
Trade friction between India and the US may resurface under Trump's Presidency, as India runs a trade surplus with the US, which could draw scrutiny India's merchandise trade surplus, which stood at around USD 32 billion in 2023, may face challenges if Trump reinstates tariffs or takes punitive measures. India's high tariffs on certain goods
have been flagged before, and these issues may re-emerge.
On the foreign policy front, India is expected to benefit under a Trump presidency With less emphasis on human rights and democratic values, India could see fewer clashes with the U S o v e r s e n s i t i v e i s s u e s Additionally, Trump's softer stance towards Russia could align with India's interests, given its ties with Moscow.
India's strategic importance as a counterweight to China will continue to strengthen under Trump, ensuring that the partnership between the two nations remains robust in the defence, security, and economic domains.
However, the report adds, India and the United States share deeprooted economic and strategic interests, which are expected to remain strong, regardless of the US election outcome.
As the US sees India as a key counterweight to China, India's large domestic demand-driven economy ensures it remains insulated from the potential negative impacts of a weaker US economic growth.
NEW DELHI: India’s share in the global trade is not progressing in tandem with its fast growing economy, and the country is losing out to low cost manufacturing hubs like Bangladesh and Vietnam.
When compared to the GDP , over the past decade, India’s trade in goods and ser vices has been declining as a percentage of gross domestic product, despite its economic heft.
The country’s share in global exports of apparel, leather, textiles, and footwear grew from 0.9% in 2002 to a peak of 4.5% in 2013, but has since declined to 3.5% in 2022, according to the World Bank. In contrast, Bangladesh’s share in global exports
of these goods reached 5.1%, while Vietnam’s stood at 5.9% in 2022.
To boost exports and benefit from China’s shift away from laborintensive manufacturing, India will need to lower trade costs, reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers and revise trade pacts, the lender said.
“This is an area where India could focus on,” Nora Dihel, a senior economist at the World Bank, told reporters in New Delhi. “This is a call to action.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s a m b i t i o n i s t o m a k e I n d i a a manufacturing hub as businesses diversify their supply chains from China. Modi’s government has spent billions of dollars in subsidies to
attract investment in industries such as electronics and chip-making. India’s expo
e increasingly capital intensive, though, and unable to absorb the millions of jobless people in the country The World Bank estimated that direct employment related to exports fell from a peak of 9.5% of total domestic employment in 2012 to 6.5% in 2020.
The World Bank expects India’s economy to continue growing at a rapid pace of 7% in the current fiscal year through March 2025 after expanding more than 8% in the past year Growth will probably average 6.7% in 2025-26 and 2026-27, the lender said.
NEW DELHI: The global demand for Indian spirits is increasing, presenting an opportunity for growth. The Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) plans to promote both the Indian alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages globally with a target of $1 billion in export revenue over the next few years. APEDA as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative has been targeting to increase exports of Indian Spirits to major foreign
destinations India currently ranks 40th in the world for alcoholic beverage exports.
In a landmark move for Indian spirits, Godawan Single malt whisky is all set to launch in the United Kingdom as an artisanal single malt whisky made in Rajasthan, India.
The first batch of Godawan was flagged off to United Kingdom jointly by Shri Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, and
Ms. Debra Crew, Chief Executive of Diageo Plc, Mr. Abhisek Dev, Chairman of APEDA, and Ms Hina Nagarajan, MD & CEO, Diageo India along with other senior representatives.
Godawan Single malt whisky had participated in the International Food and Drinks Event (IFE), London in March 2024 under the ambit of APEDA and undertook promotions of Godawan. This worked as a precursor to launching Godawan in UK and commencing exports to UK.
