Authority "Mawani" and the Port of "Marseille Fos" signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing joint cooperation in several areas, including digital transformation towards smart ports, contributing to enhancing international trade, supporting the marine environment, and the green ports initiative. This aligns with the sidelines of the VISION GOLFE 2024, organized by Business France, the national agency supporting the international development of the French economy, from June 4-5, 2024, in Paris, at the headquarters of the French Ministry of Economy, Finance, Industrial Sovereignty, and Digital Affairs, under the patronage of His Excellency President Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by His Excellency the President of the Saudi Ports Authority “Mawani,” Omar Hariri, and His Excellency the CEO of the Port of Marseille Fos, Hervé Martel, in the presence of His Excellency the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the French Republic, Fahad Alruwaili, and His Excellency the CEO of Business
France, Laurent Saint-Martin, along with several officials. The memorandum of understanding contributes to enhancing Mawani's efforts to add economic value to both countries, in addition to promoting innovation, exchanging expertise, and developing leading capabilities in the Kingdom's ports. This aligns with the targets of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS), to solidify the Kingdom’s standing as a global logistics hub bridging three continents. The forum witnessed a panel discussion titled “The Future of Infrastructure,” in which the Vice President of Commercial Business, Abdullah AlMunif, discussed Mawani's efforts in developing the infrastructure of its ports. He also reviewed the major projects being implemented and the promising investment opportunities in the ports.
It is noteworthy that the VISION GOLFE 2024 is considered the largest annual economic and commercial event organized to enhance trade cooperation between France and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The forum brings together key decision-makers from both the public and private sectors in the GCC countries, as well as several international leaders. The Port of Marseille Fos is one of the largest ports in France, given its significant role in facilitating international trade.
NEW DELHI: It would be an understatement of first order to say that Pakistan’s economy is not doing well as it is actually in the ICU of IMF (International Monetary Fund). At present, if it has not collapsed and gone down on its knees, IMF alone can be credited with providing it with the necessary sustenance Amid these challenges, the shif ting of the Afghanistan transit trade away from Pakistan has added to its woes.
For decades, Afghanistan used Pakistan territory to reach WagahAttari border, or Karachi and Gwadar ports for exporting its fruits and other products to India and elsewhere
This trade has almost come to a halt during the last five years due to a host of issues At Wagah, Pakistan allowed Afghan trucks to unload goods but on their return journey these trucks could not take any Indian goods. For this, they had to look around in Pakistan territory for Pakistani goods they could take back to Afghanistan.
This was something that increased costs of goods for Indian traders and Afghan truckers were unable to offer them good rates for transportation Trade through Iran via Chahabar was an alter native that suited both Afghanistan and India. Over a period of time, Afghanistan started sending its
shipments to outside world, including India, via the Chahabar port route and no official announcements were made.
Less than a month ago, Indian Union Minister Sarbanand Sonowal visited Chahabar, and everything has become official now It is said that India is investing heavily in the development of Chahabar, much to the annoyance of Pakistan. Due to support from Iran and India, Afghanistan is now on the verge of shifting its entire transit trade away from Pakistan According to many reports in Pakistani newspapers, at least 70 per cent of Afghanistan transit trade has stopped using Pakistani territory

NEW DELHI: The Government is considering setting up a dedicated overseas market development body–IndTrade– and a national branding division to get to the goal of $ 2 trillion in exports by 2030. IndTrade would work for trade promotion and the branding division will work along with the export strategy to promote “Made in India” as a global brand, a senior official said.
At present, there are 14 export
p r o m o t i o n c o u n c i l s u n d e r t h e Department of Commerce which deal with different product groups. Besides, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) functions as an umbrella organsiation of exporters. IndTrade will not seek to replace them but take a lead in “outward looking market development” for all sectors, the source said.
For branding “Made in India” large scale targeted campaigns will be planned. The “Made in India” label
scheme is likely to be announced in the first budget of the incoming government in July, sources said.
While the target is to more than double exports in next six years, for 2047 the export target is $ 8 trillion. To meet such tall targets, plans are underway to strengthen overseas market linkages through trade missions. For exporters further digitisation of trade approvals and regulatory processes are in the pipeline.
The Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are another priority element for export growth The plan is to accelerate bilateral and regional trade agreements with countries and economic blocks that offer high potential for securing and expanding trade markets. Also on the agenda of the Government is to boost trade negotiation capabilities.
A l r e a d y t h e D e p a r t m e n t o f Commerce is working on drawing up a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
for FTA negotiations This SOP will codify all the learnings from FTA negotiations that have been held so far. The activity around FTAs has been intense in the last few years and India changed its focus to the West – where its biggest markets are – for FTAs.
In these negotiations India is pitted against countries and economic blocks with a long history of negotiating and then running economic and monetary unions and trade blocks. From the steel and coal union in 1952 and monetary agreement in 1958 to the European Union.
Logistics corridors are another area where the government sees regional trade opportunities. Earlier this month India signed a 10-year deal to operate and develop Chabahar port in Iran This port will serve as a gateway to Central Asia and Eurasia. India-Middle East-Europe corridor is also on the drawing board.
NEW DELHI: India’s world record beating economic growth rate together with robust tax revenues, a fast expanding digital and financial i n f r a s t r u c t u r e , a n d a s t r o n g manufacturing sector, will give the new Government, a base for unleashing next generation reforms that may make the country a developed nation by 2047.
The new Government will however have to tackle with problems like unemployment and rural distress, which seemed to have played a major role in voting pattern in states like Uttar Pradesh, while also keeping inflation under control.
Given that no party, including BJP , have a clear majority of its own, tough reforms like big ticket privatisation and labour law reforms may take a backseat.
The new government will have to build upon the 8.2 per cent GDP growth recorded in 2023-24 and carry on with the reforms to make India a $5 trillion economy in the next couple of years, and a developed nation by 2047.
Policy experts are unanimous in their view that the government is likely to continue its focus on infrastructureled growth, investor-friendly policies, enabling reforms, and facilitating ease of doing business.
Last week, S&P Global Ratings had said that historically, India has been on a high growth path with national consensus on key economic policies.
“No matter who the incoming government is, the pro-growth policies, sustained infrastructure investments, the drive to reduce fiscal deficit — these things have produced very good outcomes and we believe this will continue in the coming years no matter who is in charge,” S&P Global Ratings Analyst, YeeFarn Phua said.
EY India Chief policy advisor,
DK Srivastava said, the Aatmanirbhar strategy, especially focusing on knowledge intensive employment g e n e r a t i n g a n d s t r a t e g i c manufacturing, will serve India well in the long run while providing scope for increasing both services and goods exports.
“The new Government will find a solid foundation of the economy, ready to take off with the objective of fulfilling India’s aim of becoming ‘viksit’ in the next 25 years,” Srivastava said.
Under the Modi government’s 10-year tenure, India has become the fifth largest economy, from 11th globally, shaking off its image as a “fragile” economy, prior to 2014.
The new government, will have its eyes set on taking India among the top t h r e e e c o n o m i e s i n t h e w o r l d The target is “more likely” to be realised by 2027-28 fiscal, according to the 16th Finance Commission Chairman, Arvind Panagariya.
Currently, the size of the Indian economy is $3.7 trillion, and it is expected to become $7 trillion by 2030. RBI has projected a 7 per cent growth rate for the current fiscal.
D e l o i t t e S o u t h A s i a C E O, Romal Shetty said, India is firmly on the growth trajectory as the world’s fastest-growing economy, and a key player in the global supply chain.
“ Wi t h t h e n e w g o v e r n m e n t , we expect second-generation reforms driven by technology to make India a global hub of innovation and a thriving digital economy We must further accelerate reforms to strengthen ease of doing business, boost inbound investment, and solidify India’s position as the top destination for GCCs (global capability centres), and high-tech manufacturing, with a focus on jobs,” Shetty said.
In fact, reflecting the buoyant sentiments, S&P Global Ratings last week, upgraded India’s outlook to positive, from stable, and said it could upgrade India’s sovereign rating in the next one to two years, if the government continues reforms, and adheres to the path of fiscal consolidation.
Last week, Moody’s Ratings, also said it expects policy continuity after the general election, and continued focus on infrastructure development.
Nangia Andersen India Chairman, Rakesh Nangia, said the investors’ community expects continued policy reforms, particularly in labour laws and the privatisation of state-owned enterprises.
“Investors are also keen on prudent fiscal management, focusing on reducing the fiscal deficit, while promoting growth through strategic investments This combination of reforms and fiscal discipline, is expected to create a favourable environment for sustained economic growth, and increased investor confidence,” Nangia said.
Nangia further said that investors are also eager to see a further simplification of India’s regulatory framework, more transparent, and predictable policies that can enhance the ease of doing business.
“This regulatory clarity, is crucial for attracting more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and positioning India as a key manufacturing hub, driven by supply chain diversification. In recent years, there has been substantial FDI i n f l o w i n t o s e c t o r s s u c h a s manufacturing, computer services, and renewable energy, reflecting India’s growing appeal as a destination for global investment,” Nangia said.

SHANGHAI: COSCO Shipping Lines has announced that it will switch four 16,000 TEU newbuildings to be dually f u e l l e d w i t h m e t h a n o l , f r o m conventional fuel.
The company said this is in line with its plan to comply with the global goal of achieving decarbonisation in 2050. As a result, the price of the newbuildings will be increased from US$620 million to US$734 million.
For reference, Clarksons’ data shows that the price of a 15,000 to 16,000 TEU methanol dual fuel container ship has reached US$191 million.
The ships, to be operated by COSCO Shipping and its subsidiary OOCL, were ordered alongside six 14,000 TEU vessels at COSCO Shipping’s affiliated shipyard, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou), in July 2021.
Due to the alteration in the propulsion, the capacity of each ship will be downgraded from the original 16,180 TEU to 16,108 TEU. The delivery dates for the ships have also been extended from June 2025 to December 2025 to November 2025 to June 2026.
The switch to methanol dual-fuelling means that in all, COSCO Shipping has 16 methanol dual fuelled container ships on order.
In October 2022, COSCO Shipping ordered a dozen 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel power container ships in Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering and Dalian
COSCO KHI Ship Engineering. These will be the largest methanol dual-fuelled boxships upon their delivery between 2026 and 2028.
In addition, COSCO Shipping is converting two 13,800 TEU ships and two 20,000 TEU ships to be methanol dualfuelled. The company said the conversion will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by about 360,000 tonnes each year
Alphaliner’s data shows that COSCO Shipping’s current fleet comprises 190 owned ships and 310 chartered ships. With a total capacity of 3.19 million TEUs, COSCO Shipping is the fourth largest operator The company has 38 newbuildings, totalling 685,000 TEU, on order, accounting for about 21.4% of its existing fleet.
