Drewry: Shipping Container Pool to contract for first time in 14 years

LONDON: The war in Ukraine, escalating global energy and food prices, and acute inflationary pressures are negatively impacting on the container shipping industry, with Drewry forecasting a further downturn in thetradingoutlookfor2023.

According to Drewry’s recently published Container Equipment Forecaster, the fleet of container equipment inserviceisforecasttodeclineby3%nextyear.

In response to a slowdown in container shipping cargo demand, Drewry is further downgrading its projections. It notes that shipping lines are idling more tonnage and vessel scrapping is rising. These factors mean fewer shipping containers are needed and this comesatatimewhensurplusesofover6millionTEUare estimatedtobeinthefleet.

According to Drewry, ‘ageing containers are now being soldintothesecondarymarketatanacceleratingpaceasboth ocean carriers and, particularly, lessors address overcapacity and organise their container pools so that they are brought back into linewithexisting andshort-term demandandvessel capacityprojections.’

Drewry also highlights that factory stockpiles of empty containers in China rose to more than 750,000 TEU by the end of September and these numbers are likely to increase further. As a result, the appetite to order new containers is ‘extremelyweak’.

Drewry forecasts that production will fall ‘drastically’ in 2023as‘fewownersareexpectedtoexpandtheirfleetsandnot everycontainerbeingretiredwillbereplacedwithanewone.’

Globally,Drewrysuggeststhepoolofequipmentinservice willdeclinefrom50.8millionTEUin2022to49.3millionTEUin 2023, and production will slump to an estimated 497,000 TEU –anumberonlyslightlyabovethatrecordedin2009.

On a more optimistic note, Drewry says it expects the market to rally and annual newbuild output to recover to the 4.4-5.2 million TEU range over the period to 2026, with replacement requirements accounting for over 50% of productioninallyears.

MUMBAI: DP World aims to expand its Multimodal cargo services and infrastructure footprint in India as the country shrugs off Covid-19 woes and gears up for growth.

The Dubai-based Container Terminal Company will look at locations to set up more free trade zones, expand its Coastal Shipping footprint and also look at opportunities to expand its private rail segment, Mr. Rizwan Soomar, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, India Subcontinent and Sub-Saharan Africa, DP World was quoted recently as saying.

“We have set the foundation for an extremely good Multimodal network,”statedSoomar.

“We are one of the largest private railoperatorsandallofthathasbeen built within the last 4-5 years. Wehavegota60-70%marketsharein Coastal Shipping right now. We have got into short sea trades connecting Southeast Asia with India, India-Middle East Africa because these are the tradesthatwillgrow,”hestated.

Segezha Group commences shipment of export cargo by INSTC to Nhava Sheva

MOSCOW: Segezha Group (asset of Sistema Joint Stock Financial Corporation) says it has commenced transporting its export cargo by North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC). The first batch of birch plywood was transported from Kirov to Indian Port of Nhava Sheva in October 2022. The group is currently engaged in shipment of thenextbatchofcargo,sayspresscenterofSegezhaGroup.

The logistics scheme provides for cargo transportation from Vyatka Plywood Mill in Kirov to Astrakhan, then to Iranian port of Bandar Enzeli and across the territory of Iran toitssouthernportofBandarAbbas,andthentoIndianPortof NhavaShevainthesouthofMumbai.

“We commence an active practical use of the international transport corridor North-South along with the Northern Sea Route. It is a promising direction for the expansion of

our further cooperation with Iran, South Asia and the Persian Gulf region. In the future, North-South ITC will let considerably improve our logistics,” said Andrey Yudin, LogisticsDirectorofSegezhaGroup.

North-South international transport corridor (ITC) is a 7,200-kilometre-long transport artery from St Petersburg to ports in Iran and India. North-South ITC has a western and an eastern branch, both running across Iran. The western one foresees cargo transportation by road via Rasht, the eastern one – by railway. The end point in Iran is the port of Bandar Abbas from which cargo can be delivered to India by sea. The western branch also crosses Azerbaijan, the eastern one – Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Besides, direct water transportation from Russia to Iran by the Caspian Sea is possible.

In 2016, DP World announced a $1 billion investment inIndianprojects.

In 2018, it announced with the state-run National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) that it will invest $3 billion in infrastructure projects. In July, NIIF purchased a 22.5% stake in DP World's India subsidiary, Hindustan Ports, for about $300 million.

Mr. Soomar stated with a slowdown in Europe and China, demand is shifting to India which provides DPworldanimpetustosetupfreetradezones.

“We are building a FTZ in Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust). We are setting up

one in Chennai, which is almost 124 acres. We are setting uponeinCochinaswell.”

Sourcing patterns are shifting from China and India isintheforefrontamongthemanyalternativeslocations, hestated.

The firm will help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with financing, underwriting the risk,hesaid.

“So, the lenders can lend directly to the MSMEs, cutting out that risk, and we will only deliver the goods ifthebuyerpaysup,”statedSoomar.

He went on to add that DP World keeps looking at inorganic growth but hasn't zeroed in on any particular companyforitsnextacquisition.

Bahri Logistics signs agreement to acquire remaining stake in joint venture with Bolloré

Bahri Bolloré Logiscs to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Bahri’s business unit following the acquision of 40% of share capital

RIYADH: Bahri, a global leader in logistics and transportation, announced that its business unit Bahri Logistics has entered into a sales and purchase agreement with Bolloré Logistics, one of the largest transportandlogisticscompaniesintheworld,toacquire 40 percent of the share capital of their joint venture, BahriBolloréLogistics.

Following the proposed transaction, Bahri Bolloré LogisticswillbecomeawhollyownedsubsidiaryofBahri and will be renamed Bahri Logistics. The Board of Directors and shareholders of Bahri have approved the acquisition.

MoPSW Secretary visits Kamarajar Port for a review

CHENNAI: Dr. Sanjeev Ranjan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Government of India visited Kamarajar Port on 1st November 2022. He inspected the various cargo handling terminals of Kamarajar Port. He was apprised of the various on-going construction anddevelopmentactivitiesinKamarajarPort.

The Secretary held a review meeting regarding performance of the Port with its officials. ShriSunilPaliwal, IAS, Chairman cum Managing Director, Kamarajar Port briefedtheSecretaryaboutdifferentareasinwhichthePortis trying to diversify its operations. The CMD also detailed out the connectivity projects undertaken in a big way by KamarajarPort.

Kamarajar Port is the youngest amongst the Twelve Major Ports under Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways. With 8 operational terminals for cargo handling and with a capacity of 54.44 MTPA, KPL handled its highest ever cargo throughput of 38.74 million tonnes during the financial year 2021-22 with an increase of about

50% over previous year which is the highest growth rate among all major ports. During the year 2022-23 also, the growth in cargo handling of KPL is about 18% over previous year till September which is again the highest growth rate among all major ports.

APEDA aims to raise millets export to Rs. 2,000 cr by FY26

NEW DELHI: With 14 per cent growth in millets exports, Government’s agri export promotion body, APEDA has decided to focus on shipments of its organic variety to achieve the target of at least Rs. 2,000 crore export by FY26. Millets exportsweretothetuneofaboutRs.460crorein2021-22.

“WeintendtoexceedRs.2,000croreby2025-26bytouching at least 100 plus countries in value-added and processed organic millet products,” said M Angamuthu, Chairman of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). He said APEDA has prepared a country-specific millet products catalogue to promote and facilitate export and international business. Currently,milletsgotoabout30countries.

India ranks at fifth position in global millet trade, while shipments go to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, USA, Japan, Germany, Bangladesh and many others. Export of millet is lessthanonepercentofitsdomesticproduction.

By default, the entire export is of organic nature only, an official said adding the need is to bring these products under certification process so that they get into the international market. Certified organic millets are mainly produced in Karnataka and Rajasthan and some quantities in Uttarakhand,too.

Sorghum (jowar), pearl millet (bajra), and ragi are commonly certified organic millets. Though much quantity has not been commercially produced as organic, processed millets are being exported as organic from the country. Millet as flour, flakes, and in whole are being exported as organic to SouthAmerica,Europe,USA,Canada,andNewZealand.

“The market demand for value-added millets is more whenitiscertifiedasorganicaswell.Withtheappropriateuse of processing technologies for development of value-added products, the market acceptance of organic millet-based products can be enhanced as they possess unique nutritional properties making them superior to other cereals, APEDA officials said.

Wheat export doubles to USD 1.48 bn in April-September

NEW DELHI: The Country’s wheat exports more than doubled to USD 1.48 billion during April-September 2022-23 as comparedtotheyear-agoperiod,theCommerceMinistrysaid recently. The exports stood at USD 630 million in the year-ago period.

Though the Government banned wheat exports in May, some shipments are allowed to meet food security needs of thecountriesthatrequestforit.

“Wheat export rose to USD 1,487 million in AprilSeptember2022fromUSD630millioninApril-September2022 from USD 630 million in April-September 2021,” the Ministry said.

The overall export of Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) products increased

to USD 13.77 billion in April-September 2022 from USD 11.05 billioninthesameperiodayearago.

For 2022-23, an export target of USD 23.56 billion has been fixed by APEDA and export of USD 13.77 billion has already beenachievedinthesix-monthperiod,itadded.

Similarly, export of fresh fruits increased to USD 313 million during the period under reviews as compared to USD 301millionayearago.

Export of lentils increased from USD 135 million to USD 330million.

Basmati rice exports too increased to USD 2.28 billion duringApril-September2022fromUSD1.66billionayearago.

Shipmentsofnon-basmatiriceregisteredagrowthof8per centtoUSD3.20billion.

Rupee better than other currencies; liquidity will ease: RBI Governor Das

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee has performed better than most of the currencies in the world against the US dollar and has appreciated against the greenback in terms of real effective exchange rate, though the headline number may show that it is close to its life lows, Governor Das said. The outlook for flows is also improving and that could also ease the tight domestic liquidity situations which is anyway a transitoryone.

“On a financial year basis, almost all major currenciesbarring a few like the Swiss franc, the Singapore dollar, the Russian rubble and the Indonesian rupiah -

have depreciated against the US dollar by more than the rupee. In fact, the rupee appreciated against all other major currencies barring of course the US dollar, and a few other currencies. The size of the rupee’s appreciation was the highest vis-à-vis the Japanese yen (12.4%), the Chinese yuan (5.9%), the pound sterling (4.6%) and the Euro (2.5%),”
