NEW DELHI: Exporters have sought the Central Government's intervention in providing affordable and easy availability of credit to MSMEs amid global headwinds due to lack of liquidity

In a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, apex exporters' body Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) requested for the extension of Emergency Credit Linked Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) till March 31, 2024 and restoration of interest subsidy benefit of 5 per cent to manufacturer MSMEs.

Minister of Law & Justice invites FFFAI to suggest amendments in Laws under ‘Jan Vishwas Bill’

(coinciding with concluding the Diamond Jubilee celebration year) completed with an encouraging address from Mr. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Hon'ble Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Government of India. On this occasion the Chief Guest, Mr Arjun Ram Meghwal, emphasised on the recently passed Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023 with an objective to facilitate Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business.

Welcoming the Minister on virtual platform, Mr. Shankar Shinde, the then Chairman FFFAI, stated that FFFAI members consisting of more than 6500 Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders and Logistics professionals often face challenges due to multiple laws dealing with Participating Government Agencies (PGAs), cross border trade, etc, which need to be revisited/amended to facilitate the trade and Ease of Doing Business. He lauded the present Government’s focus on acting as a facilitator rather than regulator, based on trust or ’vishwas’.

Mr. Shantanu Bhadkamkar, Past Chairman and Board of Advisor, FFFAI highlighted the theme of the special session. He pointed out that this is the first time FFFAI is being engaged with the Ministry of Law & Justice as a stakeholder, which needs to go a long way to make the CB/FF’s lives easy in terms of doing logistics business. He urged the Law & Justice Ministry to provide the logistics industry an opportunity to engage in dialogues regarding certain aspects like Show Cause Notices and quasi-judicial proceedings.

In his speech, Mr Arjun Ram Meghwal also emphasised on the exorbitant logistics cost in India which is a deterrent to compete with the international market as far as selling of Indian products are concerned. He invited FFFAI representation suggesting those legal barriers/laws hindering the smooth logistics operations and increasing logistics costs. “We have to

fulfil the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to reach the target of a $5 trillion economy by 2025 and to be a developed nation by 2047”, the Hon’ble Minister said.

It is pertinent to mention that through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023, a total of 183 provisions are being proposed to be decriminalized in 42 Central Acts administered by 19 Ministries / Departments Decriminalization is proposed to be achieved in the following manner: -

(i) Both Imprisonment and/or Fine are proposed to be removed in some provisions.

(ii) Imprisonment is proposed to be removed and fine retained in few provisions.

(iii) Imprisonment is proposed to be removed and Fine enhanced in few provisions.

(iv) Imprisonment and Fine are proposed to be converted to Penalty in some provisions.

(v) Compounding of offences is proposed to be introduced in a few provisions.

For effective implementation of the above, the bill proposes measures such as (a) pragmatic revision of fines and penalties commensurate to the offence committed; (b) establishment of Adjudicating Officers; (c) establishment of Appellate Authorities; and (d) Periodic increase in quantum of fine and penalties. It is also ensured that the degree and nature of punishment is commensurate with the severity of the offence

The AGM and the hybrid session was attended by all FFFAI Office Bearers, Executive Committee Members and a large number of members from 30 Member Locations across India. Proposing a vote of thanks to the Hon’ble Minister Mr. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Mr. Dushyant Mulani, the then Chairman Elect/now Chairman, FFFAI said the Federation would soon make a presentation to the Ministry of Law & Justice to address the issues pertaining to various laws and quasi-judicial matter, so that logistics operation becomes unhindered to achievethemissionofbeingadevelopednation.

Credit quality of export, commodity-linked sectors to face pressure: Crisil

Canada-India row: Impact on dry bulk shipping demand is likely to be minimal, feels Drewry

LONDON: The impact on dry bulk shipping demand is likely to be minimal as the bilateral relations between Canada and India crumbled to an all-time low

The political row between Canada and India escalated last week, with both countries taking diplomatic actions to take a stance. The trade talks between the two countries have already been halted However, Drewry expects a minimal impact on dry bulk shipping, even if trade between them deteriorates further.

India imports coking coal, potash and some scrap from Canada, while the latter’s imports from India are primarily limited to steel products in modest volumes. India’s coking coal imports are the highest among all the traded commodities from Canada However, the latter is India’s fourth largest trading partner for coal, with its share being only 4%.

In contrast, Canada is India’s second-largest trade partner for potash and the world’s largest producer and exporter India depends on fertiliser imports to support its agrarian economy. This is particularly crucial when exports from Belarus, the next most significant exporter of potash, have been facing logistical constraints amid sanctions.

Trade between Canada and India contributes less than 1% to the global tonne miles generated. Considering a scenario-based analysis, if there is an imposition of trade restrictions and India sources coking coal from alternative sources such as Australia and Russia in the remaining 2023 to meet its annual demand, the reduction in tonne-miles will be about 0 01% of the annual tonnemile demand from coking coal. In case of a partial shift in trade to these alternatives, the contraction in

shipping demand would be negligible. Similarly, completely sourcing the annual potash demand from Israel and Belarus (through Murmansk) by replacing Canada would reduce shipping demand to trade potash by 0 25% The cumulative impact of sourcing coking coal and potash from other countries will be reduced shipping demand, which is an insignificant 0.004% of the total dry bulk shipping demand. Even if counter-restrictions are imposed by Canada, leading to imports of steel products from Turkey or the US instead of India, the impact will be negligible on shipping demand due to low trade volumes.

Therefore, any further strained relations between the two countries may shift trade patterns but will effectively not pose any substantial risk to earnings in the sector, even if trade is hampered.

Adani Ports & SEZ total cargo volumes rise 26% YoY to 32.8 MMT in September

MUMBAI: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) registered a 26 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) growth in September in its total cargo volumes to 32.8 million metric tonnes (MMT) In a press release, the company said that growth was recorded across all cargo segments, including containers (20 per cent), dry bulk (32 per cent), and liquid & gas (21 per cent).

The company's logistics volumes continue to register significant growth with half-yearly rail volumes

of 279,177 TEUs (20 per cent) and general purpose wagon investment s c h e m e ( G P W I S ) v o l u m e s o f 8.92 MMT (42 per cent).

Between April and September, APSEZ handled 202.6 MMT of total cargo, crossing the 200 MMT milestone in the first six months of the year. The company said that this growth is supported by all key ports in the APSEZ portfolio, with container cargo growth of 18 per cent to 74.8 MMT and dry bulk growth of 10 per cent to 106.3 MMT

In August, APSEZ's total cargo volume rose 17 per cent from a year ago to 34.2 MMT. Adani Ports has six ports and terminals on the west coast Mundra, Dahej, Tuna, and Hazira in Gujarat; Mormugao in Goa; and Dighi in Maharashtra

The company operates five ports and terminals on the east coast — Dhamra in Odisha; Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh; and Kattupalli and Ennore in Tamil Nadu.

It said some of the MSME sectors are affected due to a dip in exports on account of a global demand slowdown.

FIEO has urged extending the ECLGS "till March 31, 2024" as it will help micro, small and medium enterprises sail through this difficult time and bounce back when the situation improves.

"With interest rates firming up, MSMEs are getting credit at not less than 8-11 per cent. The subvention for the interest equalisation scheme was

reduced as interest rates were c o m i n g d o w n . H o w e v e r w i t h complete change in situation, there is an urgent need to restore interest equalisation benefit of 5 per cent," it added.

MSMEs account for about 40 per cent in the country's total exports.

India's exports declined 6.86 per cent to USD 34.48 billion in August, for the seventh month in a row, due to a fall in shipments from key sectors like petroleum and gems and jewellery on subdued global demand.

The trade deficit (difference between imports and exports) during the month touched a 10-month high of USD 24.16 billion.

Cumulatively, exports during April-August this fiscal contracted 11.9 per cent to USD 172.95 billion. I n d i a ' s e x p o r t s c o n t r a c t e d 15.88 per cent in July.

Exports sectors, which recorded negative growth in August, include tea, coffee, rice, spices, leather, gems and jewellery, textiles, and petroleum products.

GENEVA: The global merchant fleet is getting very old and will require hundreds of billions of dollars for its required green transition, a new detailed report from the United Nations has warned.

The 126-page Review of Maritime Transport 2023 published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in time for today’s World Maritime Day is a stat-laden document with many important pointers on where shipping stands today on its green pathway

Among key statistics in the report, the average age of commercial ships at the start of 2023 was 22.2 years, two years older than a decade ago Further, more than half of the world’s

fleet is over 15 years old, a remarkable figure when taken in the context of what Norwegian broker Fearnleys has this month described as the record-breaking length of orderbooks at the world’s shipyards.

“Shipyard capacity is currently facing constraints Tanker and dry bulk owners are anticipating long waiting times and high building prices. Increasing shipbuilding capacity is crucial to ensure that shipping meets global demand and its sustainability goals,” the UNCTAD report states.

UNCTAD called for a “just and e q u i t a b l e t r a n s i t i o n ” t o a decarbonised shipping industry in its review, highlighting the pressing

need for cleaner fuels, digital solutions and an equitable transition t o c o m b a t c o n t i n u e d c a r b o n emissions and regulatory uncertainty in the shipping industry.

Railways achieves 758.20 MT freight loading in rst two quarters of 2023

NEW DELHI: On cumulative basis from April –September 2023, freight loading of 758 20 MT was achieved against last year loading of 736 68 MT, an improvement of approximate 21.52 MT over last year’s loading for the same period. Railways have earned Rs 81697 crore against Rs 78991 crore over the last year which is an improvement of approx Rs 2706 Crores as compared to the

same period of the last year

During the month of September 2023, originating freight loading of 123.53 MT has been achieved against loading of 115.80 MT in Sept. 2022, which is an improvement of approx 6.67% over the last year. Freight revenue of Rs. 12956.95 Crores has been achieved in Sept 2023 against Rs 12332 70 Cr freight earnings in September 2022, thereby showing an

improvement of about 5.06% over the last year IR achieved loading of 59.70 MT in Coal, 14.29 MT in Iron Ore, 5.78 MT in Pig Iron and Finished Steel, 6.25 MT in Cement (Excl. Clinker), 4.89 MT in Clinker, 4.54 MT in Foodgrains, 4 23 MT in Fertilizers, 4 0 MT in Mineral Oil, 7.28 MT in Containers and 10.10 MT in Balance Other Goods during September, 2023.

India-West Asia-Europe Economic corridor to give ‘fillip’ to Gujarat’s potential: GIIC official

G A N D H I N A G A R : T h e proposed India-Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor will give a “fillip” to Gujarat’s “potential” as an investment hub, said State Government officials, adding that the coastal state is the gateway to the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

Mr. Rahul Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation, exuded confidence over the positive impact of the ambitious corridor, given the strategic position of the state.

During the G20 Summit last month in New Delhi, India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union announced a Memorandum of Understanding committing to work together to develop a new India-Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor.

The Corridor will consist of two separate corridors: the East Corridor connecting India to West Asia and the Middle East, and the Northern Corridor connecting West Asia and the Middle East to Europe.

It will include a rail line, which, upon completion, will provide a reliable and cost-effective crossborder ship-to -rail transit network to supplement the existing multi-modal transport r o u t e s , e n h a n c i n g t h e transhipment of goods and services from South East Asia through India to West Asia and Middle East Europe.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the corridor and said it “is going to become the basis of world trade for hundreds of years to come, and history will always remember that this corridor was initiatedonIndiansoil”

To further the growth of the state, t h e G u j a r a t G o v e r n m e n t h a s announced that the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit will be organised in 2024 January. It is a biennial event The last Vibrant Gujarat summit was organized in 2019. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government could not go ahead with its plans to organise the summit in 2021.

The Saksham Group celebrates International Coastal Cleanup Day as part of its sustainability push

M U M B A I : GoShoonya, a joint venture between Saksham Group of C o m p a n i e s a n d G o S h o o n y a P v t . Ltd., organized a m e g a b e a c h cleanup drive to mark the occasion of Inter national Coastal Cleanup Day on September 16th, 2023, at Uttan Beach in the Mira-Bhayandar district near Mumbai, Maharashtra.

A mind boggling 6669 volunteers from schools, colleges, management institutions, NGOs, social workers, local communities and corporates came together to collect a whopping 46 tons of waste.

All collected waste was sent to the MBMC Dry Waste Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The recyclable material will be used to make benches, designer tiles, flower pots, pen stands, key chains and a lot more. The rest of it which cannot be recycled will be responsibly disposed by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC).

Uttan Beach was chosen as the location for our cleanup drive for a specific reason. It is, unfortunately, one of the most unhygienic beaches in the region, primarily due to the lack of responsible waste disposal practices.

The event was ably supported by the MBMC, the local police, FutureForIndia – NGO, CO2Exit, Decathlon and Mangrove Foundation.

The initiative underscores the Group’s commitment as a responsible shipping and logistics conglomerate to keep our coasts clean and is a part of our march towards sustainability Towards this, they have embarked on an ambitious roadmap of societal good with key projects which include categories of:

Environment:

In this space, they aim to work towards a zero-carbon ecology through dry waste recycling and afforestation, elevating quality of life of the daily workers involved in this process.

They intend to collect 2,000 tonnes of dry waste annually and recycle the same, equivalent to 83 million bottles.

4500 trees already planted in Mumbai as part of urban afforestation using the Miyawaki technique with a goal to plant another 1,00,000 saplings over the next few years.

Education:

They have redeveloped and renovated kindergartens in rural India (anganwadis) including skill development of stakeholders to provide quality education at the grassroots which will ensure sustainability in the lives of millions of children and their families.

3,200 students across 96 such anganwadis have benefited from this program and they are targeting 35,000 more in the coming years.

Health Care:

The Group has constructed a 4000 sq. feet medical centre in the Palghar tribal belt of North Mumbai, covering around 3,00,000 people and will be building three more such facilities to cover a population of 1 million.

Skill Development

In their quest to up skill youth in India, they organised special skill development programs for them in the areas of retail management, banking, financial services and warehouse management. They will be covering over 400 such youth and are targeting 5000 more in the next few years.

The ReCycle App

With the objective of creating a better society by changing human behaviour, all these initiatives are powered by the ReCycle app of the Saksham Group which encourages users to record their good deeds for which they will be gratified on the day of a mega cycling event on the 25th of February, 2024.

Available on Andriod and iOS platforms, users can record any societal good done, ranging from avoiding plastic to helping an aged person cross the road. Each action will be assigned ‘karma coins’ and the accumulated ‘coins’ will be assigned a monitory value which will be assigned to a cause of the person’s choice.

People can also use the app to track their tness goals as it us synced with Strava, a social platform for tness enthusiasts.
