India-Singapore relations poised for bigger take-off: MEA on PM’s visit

NEW DELHI : Building on “new anchors” of partnership identified under the India-Singapore Ministerial roundtable framework, the relations between the two countries is poised for an even bigger take-off, the MEA said recently ahead of Prime Minister NarendraModi’s visit to Singapore.

Prime Minister Modi is slated to visit Singapore on September 4-5 at the invitation of his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong.

Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, JaideepMazumdar, at a media briefing here said India and Brunei are working towards setting up a “joint working group in defence”.

He said Prime Minister Modi is visiting Singapore after nearly six years.

The Secretary (East) said India-Singapore ties have “evolved” and there is a “dynamic strategic partnership” encompassing various areas from shared history and peopleto-people ties which form an important link between the two countries.

“Our trade and investment flows have shown a steady growth, we have a robust defence cooperation and growing exchanges in culture and education. We have identified new anchors of our partnership under the India-Singapore ministerial roundtable framework,” he said.

Singapore is India’s largest trade partner in EAN and the country is a leading source of foreign direct investment.

Singapore is India’ sixth largest trade partner worldwide and it was the largest source of FDI during the last financial year valued at $11.77 billion, he said.

He said that he could see the relationship between the two sides taking off to the next stage.

For Singapore, India presents tremendous opportunities and for India, Singapore presents with many options, whether it is value chain, digital technology and semiconductors, he added.

There will be an interaction with the CEOs and other business leaders in Singapore during Prime Minister Modi’s visit.

The project is in line with Prime Minister ShriNarendraModiji’s Vision of a New India which will make people of the region “Atmanirbhar” by way of comprehensive development in the area which will enhance their employment/ self-employment opportunities.

The project is result of PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which have been possible through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.

The project covers 6 Districts in 2 States i.e., Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 309 Kms.

With this project 30 New Stations will be constructed, providing enhancing connectivity to Aspirational District

Barwani New Line project will provide connectivity to approx. 1,000 villages and about 30 Lakh population.

Project will provide direct connectivity to Pithampur Auto Cluster (houses 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries) from gateway port of JNPA and other state ports. Project will also provide direct connectivity to millet producing districts of Madhya Pradesh and Onion producing districts of Maharashtra which further facilitates in the distribution of the same to northern and southern parts of the country

This is an essential route for transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertilizer, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, POL etc.

The capacity augmentation work will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude of about 26 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) The Railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimizing logistics cost of the country, reduce oil import (18 Crore Litres) and lower CO2 emissions (138 Crore Kg) which is equivalent to plantation of 5.5 Crore trees.

MUMBAI : Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Hindustan Infralog (DP World), Larsen & Toubro, Royal Boskalis, Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors, Jan De Nul Dredging, National Marine Dredging Company and International Seaport Dredging are among the 15 entities to file expression of interest for development and maintenance of dredging, offshore reclamation and shore protection works on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) under Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) for the new port at Vadhavan.

Rail Vikas Nigam, Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co, Meka Infrastructure and Vishwa Samudra Engineering have also submitted EoIs for the work estimated to cost Rs. 20,647 crores when the deadline ended on 30 August.

This is the first time that dredging, offshore reclamation and shore protection works for a new port in India is being tried out on public-privatepartnership (PPP) under Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).

On 30 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke ground for the new port, which when completed will be the 13th port to be owned by the Union Government.

Vadhavan Port will be designed to handle 298 million tonnes (mt) of cargo, including 23 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU’s).

In early August, state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), which is helming the Rs. 76,220 crore Vadhavan Port project, called expression of interest (EoI) for dredging, offshore reclamation and shore protection works on PPP-HAM model for the new port.

To be sure, the EoI is not a tender Basis the suggestions and changes sought by the entities during the EoI, JNPA will fine tune the terms for the PPP HAM contract and secure approval from the Public-Private-Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC) ahead of calling bids for the work, a key basic infrastructure of the new port, officials said.

Concor to resume Coastal cargo transport, enhance last-mile connectivity

NEW DELHI: State-run Container Corporation of India Limited (Concor) is poised to resume coastal cargo transport as part of its multi-modal logistics strategy. The move is aimed to provide a cost-effective, rapid, and environmentally friendly transportation solution.

This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Concor and the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) in June of this year. The agreement seeks to explore business opportunities by capitalising on each other ’s infrastructure and expertise, thereby offering integrated and economical end-to-end logistics services through a single platform.

The MoU will facilitate SCI’s shipping services in expanding Concor’s reach to international destinations while also venturing into coastal and inland waterways trade, thus providing a diverse array of tailored logistics solutions for broader trade benefits.

Concor had initially launched coastal shipping services in January 2019, establishing routes from Gujarat to the southern regions of India. However, these services were halted in 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

“We have partnered with the Shipping Corporation

and will soon be resuming coastal transport from Gujarat to South India, and also from the South to the eastern parts of the country. Expect to hear about our coastal movement initiative in the near future,” Mr. Sanjay Swarup, Concor CMD, told investors recently.

The coastal routes will cater to various commodities, including waste paper, ceramic tiles, sanitary ware, soda, cotton bales, and consumer goods.

Concor's FMLM initiative

Concor is concentrating on enhancing first- and lastmile connectivity for its customers, with coastal shipping set to be a crucial component of this strategy Additionally, the company has introduced a logistics app to support first-mile and last-mile services.

“The first mile, last mile (FMLM) initiative has been highly successful. In the first quarter of FY25, we achieved an income of Rs 82 crore from this segment, marking a 35 per cent year-on-year growth,” added Swarup.

The company has set a growth target of 50 per cent for FY25. “We are optimistic that the nationwide launch of the app and other strategic measures, including customer education on its benefits, will drive this growth,” he concluded.

Adani Ports’ cargo volumes rises 5% YoY in August

MUMBAI : Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) clocked 36.1 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo volume in August 2024, registering a growth of 5% YoY

Tiruppur anticipates 20% growth in garment exports amidst global challenges

TIRUPPUR : Tiruppur, the renowned textile hub in Tamil Nadu, is set to experience a significant boost in garment exports this financial year, with projections indicating a 20 per cent increase.

A. Sakthivel, Chairman of the India Knit Fair Association, revealed these optimistic forecasts during a press briefing on Friday in Tiruppur

According to Sakthivel, garment exports from Tiruppur were valued at Rs 33,500 crore in the last fiscal year This year, the figure is expected to rise to Rs 38,000 crore. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, Tiruppur’s export performance remains robust. Sakthivel noted that recent months have shown a promising upward trend, which he expects to continue.

Sakthivel attributed part of this growth to the diversification of yarn sources by local manufacturers, who are now sourcing materials from various regions within India. This strategic shift has played a role in maintaining the steady growth of exports.

However, Sakthivel also highlighted challenges, particularly from Bangladesh. While recent developments in Bangladesh have not directly increased orders for Tiruppur, the cost advantage for buyers sourcing from Bangladesh due to its duty-free access in multiple

markets - has impacted competitive dynamics.

Sakthivel emphasised that a forthcoming free trade agreement between India and the UK, as well as with the European Union, could offer a similar cost advantage and further enhance Tiruppur’s export prospects.

In light of these challenges, Sakthivel urged the Indian government to address the influx of garment imports from Bangladesh, which he believes is adversely affecting the domestic market.

Moreover, Sakthivel assured that Tiruppur’s garment exporters are well-prepared to comply with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements of European buyers in the near future, positioning themselves strategically for continued success.

KM Subramanian, President of the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association, also weighed in, reporting a 10 per cent increase in exports over the past three months.

Subramanian highlighted that nearly 90 per cent of exporters have benefitted from the rising demand, underscoring the sector’s resilience and growth potential.

As Tiruppur navigates these complex global dynamics, the region remains optimistic about its export growth, driven by strategic adaptations and a strong market presence.

Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok opens new horizons for Indo-Russia cooperation

MOSCOW : Russia is planning to schedule pit stops in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, as part of its Eastern Maritime Corridor connecting Vladivostok with Chennai.

The corridor boosts India’s business connections with resource rich Far East. According to Russian Far East Minister Alexey Chekunkov, the Far Eastern Shipping Company (FESCO) is actively collaborating with Indian entities for taking forward this arrangement.

On a separate note, Russia is also looking forward to collaborate with Indian shipyards for joint shipbuilding projects. Back, in the July, the two countries had signed the India-Russia Cooperation Programme in Trade,

Economic and Investment Spheres in the Russian Far East for 2024-2029, as well as the Principles for Cooperation in the Russian Arctic Region.

“The trade turnover between the ports of the Far East and India exceeds one billion dollars, excluding oil and special-purpose goods.

Therefore, the logistical aspect of this agreement is very important; it allows for the development of trade between the Far East and India, as well as the countries of Southeast Asia as a whole,” Alexey Chekunkov, Minister of Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic recently stated.

Imports of goods like umbrellas, musical items from China hurting Indian MSMEs: GTRI

NEW DELHI : Increasing imports of goods such as umbrellas, toys, certain fabrics, and musical instruments are severely hurting MSMEs as many of these products are also made by domestic businesses, according to think tank GTRI. The report said that during January to June 2024, India exported goods worth only USD 8.5 billion, while imports stood at USD 50.4 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 41.9 billion.

This low export and high import makes China India's largest trade deficit partner "China accounts for 29.8 per cent of India's industrial goods imports. India must invest in deep manufacturing to cut dependence on import of critical industrial products from China," Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

He said that these imports from China are "hurting" Indian MSMEs, as many of the imported products are also made by these local businesses.

He noted that the cheaper Chinese goods make it tough for MSMEs to compete, leading to struggles for survival.

"Some MSMEs have to shut down or reduce their operations, & they find it hard to grow due to the easy access to low-cost Chinese products. These challenges affect job creation and economic growth in India," Srivastava said.

The GTRI data analysis stated that China supplies 95 8 per cent of India's umbrellas and sun umbrellas (USD 31 million) and 91.9 per cent of artificial flowers and human hair articles (USD 14 million).

Additionally, glassware (USD 521 7 million, 59 7 per cent), leather articles including saddlery and handbags (USD 120.9 million, 54.3 per cent), and toys (USD 120.2 million, 52.5 per cent) are seeing a similar trend, severely impacting domestic manufacturers, it said.

Even in ceramic products (USD 232.4 million, 51.4 per cent) and musical instruments (USD 15.7 million, 51.2 per cent), where Indian artisans once thrived, the dominance of Chinese imports is displacing local production, it added.

Also, Indian MSMEs are struggling to compete in industries such as furniture, bedding, & lamps; and cutlery

"These are sectors where Indian small businesses have traditionally been strong but are now losing ground due to the influx of Chinese goods," it said, adding products like articles of stone, and carpets are under threat, diminishing the competitiveness of local producers.

According to the GTRI's data, silk import stood at USD 32.8 million from China, which is 41 per cent of India's total imports of silk during January-June 2024.

Srivastava said that India urgently needs to invest in deep manufacturing to reduce its reliance on critical industrial imports, especially from China.

"The heavy reliance on Chinese imports is eroding the market share and sur vival of Indian MSMEs. Strengthening domestic manufacturing is essential to protect these small businesses and maintain India's economic independence," he added.
